On reddit they're saying this is an extremely easy fix (finding and deleting a file), and this is going to reveal a lot of incompetent IT people.

by Anonymousreply 7July 19, 2024 8:06 AM

Here's how to fix it:

It's hitting little systems like barcode scanners and causing a lot of problems at airports.

Airlines everywhere reporting check-in issues. They're using whiteboards in Delhi for flight status.

by Anonymousreply 10July 19, 2024 8:53 AM

R8 Looks like CrowdStrike struck the wrong people!

by Anonymousreply 11July 19, 2024 8:54 AM

I thought they always used whiteboards in Delhi for flight status, r10.

by Anonymousreply 12July 19, 2024 8:55 AM

CrowdStrike is going to be sued out of existence.

by Anonymousreply 13July 19, 2024 8:56 AM

Yes they are in big trouble R13. This will have cost hundreds of millions of dollars across the globe.

CrowdStrike - you in danger gurl.

by Anonymousreply 14July 19, 2024 8:59 AM

People would shut themselves if they knew how flimsy most essential tech is. And we also keep forgetting that tech is useless without the single point of failure that is electrical power.

by Anonymousreply 15July 19, 2024 9:01 AM

R13 Sadly, Microsoft has delivered hundreds if not thousands of bad updates that bricked certain computers worldwide, and they’re still in business. By now, technology lawyers probably write indemnification clauses in every contract.

Health-care systems across the globe were hobbled by the Microsoft outage. It caused chaos for patients checking in for appointments across Britain, canceled elective procedures in German hospitals and complicated some emergency response systems in the United States.

In Britain, the National Health Service was crippled throughout the morning on Friday, as it lost access to its computer systems across a number of hospitals and doctors offices. But health-care providers were clear that there was no impact on emergency services, or the ability to provide care.

American said they've lifted the ground stop. Timezones kept this from being much worse.

by Anonymousreply 33July 19, 2024 10:34 AM

[quote] CrowdStrike saying it's a windows update that's the culprit.

R25 Right, Microsoft should never release an update until every company in the world pre-tests the update and reports back to Microsoft if it causes a problem. /s

I work for one of the largest medical centers in the world. No Windows Update can be installed on network computers until they are tested by IT that they are compatible with the many software programs that run in the medical center. That means we are often weeks to months behind on the latest updates. Only after testing does IT do a remote Windows Update on computers attached to the network.

by Anonymousreply 50July 19, 2024 1:20 PM

This was an "accident" or error.

This shows how fragile the entire system really is.

Imagine if NYC had a blackout like the 70;s, the meltdown of people unable to use their laptops and iphones would be hilarious. Cant even call Uber. Do they remember how to hail a cab? Would they have real cash to pay him?

by Anonymousreply 68July 19, 2024 6:36 PM

A guy came into Starbucks raging because he couldn't order online. He wanted the drink he couldn't order, and he wanted it now! When some of us informed him it was a worldwide issue, he still blamed Starbucks for his inability to be attended to immediately. This while seven of us were waiting in line to order in the store.

The world worked fine in the 60s, 70s and 80s. There was no computer system to go out and you used your creative thinking to bypass any problems you encountered. Back then, everyone stopped at an intersection when the traffic lights were out, which was infrequent. Now, people see the light isn't working and they speed through the intersection anyway.

by Anonymousreply 69July 19, 2024 6:39 PM

R68 that's pretty much transport everywhere these days... scary. I don't know if a lot of people could get out of the airport to ground transport without their phones or electronic money... don't know if I would. That's a good point.

by Anonymousreply 75July 19, 2024 11:03 PM

A friend is flying to Washington from SFO to visit/say goodbye to her dying (from brain cancer cousin) and her flight is delayed still because they can't check in. I just talked to her. This is some serious shit.

Our work computers are working just fine, no issues. I didn't know about this outage until a few hours ago - we're working remotely today.

by Anonymousreply 76July 19, 2024 11:23 PM

I’m in the US and have an app on my phone from a chain of truck stops that left me a notification which turned out to be an apology for their systems being all fucked up by this, including their shower reservation system.

I’m glad now that I decided to get the app and am not on a road trip and wanting to get cleaned up! I’d have taken the issue as just one more unreliable roadside chain’s FUBAR that resulted because they weren’t bothering to pretend to give a shit anymore.

by Anonymousreply 77July 19, 2024 11:38 PM

Systems finally came up a few minutes ago at my NYC medical center. They were out for almost 16 hours. I can't guess how many medication errors were probably made.

We were charged for 9 rides that were never dispatched. Wound up on the bus. Welcome to the cashless society.

by Anonymousreply 88July 20, 2024 5:42 AM

R51, not a hacking event?

I don't trust the 365 cloud. Everything is on the hard drive, backed up to an external drive.

by Anonymousreply 89July 20, 2024 9:16 AM

At the micro level, I always make a Windows backup before I install a new program or update an existing program, including Windows itself. Ninety-nine percent of the time, there’s no problem. But that other 1% may make you wish you were never born if you didn’t make a backup first.

by Anonymousreply 90July 20, 2024 9:28 AM

I am not a Boomer and I generally dont like Boomers but my hunch is Boomer Gramps would know how to get out of the city on his own accord without a cell phone while Gen Y would be crying in the airport lounge because he has no cash and no idea how to survive without a phone in his hand. He wont even have enough physical cash to buy himself a drink to drown his sorrows.
