"DEI" criticism hurled at female Secret Service Agents after Trump shooting

The U.S. Secret Service said Wednesday that it stood by its female agents and was appalled by some of the criticism they’ve received on conservative social media since Saturday’s attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

The Secret Service, in a statement to NBC News, said that the criticism from pundits and influencers was baseless. The agency also stood by its commitment to diversity in recruiting as helping, not hurting, the effectiveness of its protective teams.

The statement follows a multiday campaign of derision by some conservatives who accused Kimberly Cheatle, the Secret Service director, of being unqualified and who said that female agents assigned to Trump hadn’t been physically capable of protecting him. Some critics said the Secret Service should return to being all-male, which it hasn’t been since 1970.

Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service’s chief of communication, said in the statement: “We stand united against any attempt to discredit our personnel and their invaluable contributions to our mission and are appalled by the disparaging and disgusting comments against any of our personnel.”

“As an elite law enforcement agency, all of our agents and officers are highly trained and fully capable of performing our missions,” he said.

“It is an insult to the women of our agency to imply that they are unqualified based on gender. Such baseless assertions undermine the professionalism, dedication and expertise of our workforce,” he added.

The failure of the Secret Service to stop the gunman before he was in a position to shoot has come under intense scrutiny, with lawmakers demanding answers and an independent review panel investigating the circumstances. Attendees have said they pointed out the would-be assassin to law enforcement and took video of him for at least two minutes before Trump was struck, according to an NBC News review of video clips.

This will be the future if Dump makes it to the White House. Racial and ethnic minorities will be presumptively unqualified for any position that is coveted by a white guy. Women will be deemed unqualified for anything other than birthing, child-rearing and homemaking. Gays will be forced to the margins of society by "religious freedom", charges of "grooming" youth and erasure due to "don't say gay" initiatives.

BIDEN/HARRIS 2024 (or Democrat whoever)

by Anonymousreply 3July 18, 2024 3:06 PM

I sort of agree.

Unless women can pass the same rigorous, physical exam as the men, then they don't belong in the military or police force or fire department or secret service.

But everything is modified for them to easily pass.

Basically, they've become honorary positions for women, who are generally incompetent at such jobs, no matter how you slice it.

The videos speak for themselves and clearly show the bumbling of these particular female agents. Also, it’s been pointed out that their short stature left Trump vulnerable since they couldn’t protect his upper body with theirs.

Keep in mind that the Secret Service has other important responsibilities besides protecting VIPs. They could easily be reallocated to other roles with no loss in rank.

by Anonymousreply 6July 18, 2024 3:30 PM

[quote] The videos speak for themselves and clearly show the bumbling of these particular female agents. Also, it’s been pointed out that their short stature left Trump vulnerable since they couldn’t protect his upper body with theirs.

Theoretically, perhaps, but we know in reality he did not require protection. This was not an attempted assassination. It was a staged event -- a false flag that the MAGA loonies are so fond of accusing the Left of orchestrating. Dump was never in any greater danger than whatever injury could occur from gently tackling an 80 year old, obese man to the ground, squirting ketchup in his ear and replacing his shoes.

by Anonymousreply 7July 18, 2024 3:57 PM

The secret service failed that day. That the shooter could get into position and just lie there for an extended period of time is incredible. One of the gunmen for law enforcement even took a picture of him but didn't shoot yet to report and nothing was done. I don't think the women are the problem but it's a symptom of other priorities than optimal job performance. Here is a lengthy, very detailed description about what went down. Hiw they let the event continue when they had just seen a guy with a sniper rifle and a rangefinder minutes ago is behind me.

I thought Trump hand-picked the short agents to surround him so they wouldn’t obscure his face in the event of an attack. Sure, that would be more risky, but imagine the Pulitzer Prize winning photo!

by Anonymousreply 15July 18, 2024 6:59 PM

SS have other jobs than just being shields for the president. Sure, they do that but they also scope out locations, interrogate people, do all sorts of other intelligence-related and security things than what we see. It's possible they didn't have enough agents assigned but if that idiot Drumf wasn't trying to do his Nazi salute instead of what he was told to do, which was to get down, she would have been able to cover him just fine.

by Anonymousreply 16July 18, 2024 7:08 PM

It wasn't a nazi salute. It was the symbol of power. The Black Panthers, hippies, and radical feminists used it in the 60s a lot.

Is there a site leader or coordinator? This was an epic fuckup on multiple levels. Someone needs to take responsibility.

Kimberly Cheatle’s “sloped roof” excuse is being mocked and memed mercilessly on X. Not sure if she should have to resign, but someone should.

The women assigned to Trump looked inept in the aftermath. Shouldn’t this detail go to Navy Seal types? I agree that there is surely a place for them in the SS, but not directly protecting whichever figure is in public.

The Secret Service didn't exist when Lincoln was president. It wasn't formally tasked with protecting the president until after the McKinley assassination. Roosevelt was not president when he was shot. The Secret Service only started protecting former presidents in 1965.

by Anonymousreply 27July 19, 2024 1:11 AM

It was quite something to see those Secret Service officers jump on top of Trump not knowing if there would be more bullets. The women were pathetic except for the one who helped him down the stairs. Short, fat women aren't physically appropriate for this detail.

[quote] Secret Service boss Kimberly Cheatle says she's not resigning after senators confront her at RNC over Trump shooting

Embattled Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has no plans to resign after a group of GOP senators asked her to do so in an angry confrontation caught on video at the Republican National Convention over the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, her staff told ABC News.

As calls for her resignation grow louder, Cheatle, according to her staff, is determined to stay put and see through the investigation of how the attempt on Trump's life happened at an outdoor campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Just hours after she and FBI Director Christopher Wray briefed lawmakers on the investigation, Cheatle was confronted by four Republican senators at the RNC in Milwaukee, where she is overseeing the Secret Service security plan for the event.

During an unclassified briefing with Congressional members Wednesday, Cheatle and Wray released a timeline on the rally shooting, revealing that 20 minutes passed between the time U.S. Secret Service snipers first spotted the gunman on a rooftop and the time shots were fired at the former president, according to several law enforcement officials and lawmakers briefed on the matter.

Trump met with Cheatle on Tuesday at the hotel he is staying at in Milwaukee, a source familiar with the meeting told ABC News on Thursday. Cheatle briefed him on the assassination attempt.

Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), John Barrasso (R-Wyoming), James Lankford (R-Okla.), and Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) confronted Cheatle Wednesday night at the RNC and demanded she answer their questions on how the Trump shooting transpired.

A video posted on social media by Blackburn captured the encounter outside a third-floor hospitality suite at the Fiserv Forum, where the convention is taking place.

The footage shows the senators surrounding Cheatle and demanding she answer their question right then about the failure of the Secret Service at the rally.

I think these complaints about DEI in general are bullshit but those three female agents looked ridiculous after Trump got shot, one fumbled trying to her gun in her holster then just gave up, the other two looked almost as silly. Those three stuck out compared to the male agents. I don't know them or anything about them and they might be quite qualified but they sure didn't look it after Trump got shot, one of the women seemed to be trying to protect Trump's MAGA hat as much as protect Trump. Those three appeared more rattled than the men.

by Anonymousreply 56July 22, 2024 8:53 PM

I was not surprised to see women on that detail I was surprised to see so many short people on that detail. I always thought a certain height was required. There is a good reason to have security taller than the principal they are to protect.

[quote] Secret Service director steps down after assassination attempt against ex-President Trump at rally

WASHINGTON (AP) — The director of the Secret Service said Tuesday she is resigning following the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump that unleashed intensifying outcry about how the agency tasked with protecting current and former presidents could fail in its core mission.

Kimberly Cheatle, who had served as Secret Service director since August 2022, had been facing growing calls to resign and several investigations into how the shooter was able to get so close to the Republican presidential nominee at an outdoor campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

“I take full responsibility for the security lapse,” she said in an email to staff, obtained by The Associated Press. “In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to step down as your director.”

Cheatle’s departure was unlikely to end the scrutiny of the long-troubled agency after the failures of July 13, and it comes at a critical juncture ahead of the Democratic National Convention and a busy presidential campaign season. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have promised continued investigation, along with an inspector general probe and an independent and bipartisan effort launched at President Joe Biden’s behest that will keep the agency in the spotlight.

“The scrutiny over the last week has been intense and will continue to remain as our operational tempo increases,” Cheatle said in her note to staff.

Cheatle’s resignation comes a day after appeared before a congressional committee and was berated by hours by both Democrats and Republicans for the security failures. She called the attempt on Trump’s life the Secret Service’s “most significant operational failure” in decades and said she took full responsibility for the security lapses, but she angered lawmakers by failing to answer specific questions about the investigation.

At the hearing Monday, Cheatle remained defiant that she was the “right person” to lead the Secret Service, even as she said she took responsibility the security failures. When Republican Rep. Nancy Mace suggested Cheatle begin drafting her resignation letter from the hearing room, Cheatle responded, “No, thank you.”

She is the One.

She is the only person I can think of at this time. It was great to see AOC and the other Dems raking her over the coals. Her answers just stunk.

I felt bad for her as a person but as head of the USSS it was well deserved and she had it coming.

by Anonymousreply 70July 23, 2024 4:30 PM

R68 Lawrence O'Donnell was explaining the other night that when someone tried to shoot Gerald Ford with a handgun back in the 70's and then someone else tried again 3 weeks later and then six years later someone with a handgun actually did shoot Reagan, it was the same white man who was head of the Secret Service during all that and no one called for his resignation and he later retired from the Secret Service, not fired, not asked to resign.

by Anonymousreply 71July 25, 2024 3:23 AM

R71, the overwhelming evidence of Cheatle’s incompetence in running the agency rather the number of assassination attempts probably led to the calls for her to be fired or to resign.

by Anonymousreply 72July 25, 2024 4:11 AM

I am all for women's rights but there are just some jobs women shouldn't do. men are born with more upper body strength than women. Those women were way too short to cover Trump and they couldn't control him because he kept trying to make his fist thing.

I also don't think women should be firefighters. I can't imagine some of these women trying to rescue a man and carry him out a window if he weighs over 125lb.

Girls shouldn't be allowed in the boy Scouts and boys shouldn't be allowed in the Girl Scouts.
