No one in America seems to care what is happening in Ukraine or Israel anymore

So there’s that.

Such as it is.

And resonating with you, in accordance with what “you” is.

by Anonymousreply 149January 19, 2025 5:47 PM

I really don't care.

Do you?

Both of those are wars being fought in the 14-day news cycle.

by Anonymousreply 2July 16, 2024 8:24 PM

On a similar note, how many people are still going to care about Trump getting shot three months from now when it's time to vote, I wonder.

They’re being reminded daily that the alternative is voting for a vegetable.

by Anonymousreply 5July 16, 2024 8:36 PM

I feel like we are all exhausted from being spun up to care, worry, fret, argue and even protest things. I'm at the point now that I am unable to care about things that happen in the real world the way I used to. I remember how devastating mass shootings use to feel. And natural disasters. And corruption at the highest levels. Now I am numb. Sad state of affairs.

by Anonymousreply 6July 16, 2024 8:40 PM

Both Ukraine and Israel get plenty of attention, just not on DL. Maybe the threads attract too many trolls.

Not many people even care now. Trump received no polling boost after his stupid fake shooting. It appears Americans have grown tired of his melodrama and toxic invective.

Read foreign newspapers and watch foreign broadcasts. Without the BBC, I wouldn't know a thing about what is happening in Afria.

by Anonymousreply 10July 16, 2024 10:19 PM

I agree R6. I was almost part of the Trump Derangement Syndrome category and now I'm having a hard time caring at all. When Trump won in 2016 I kept having vapors and allowed the news cycles to dominate my feelings. I had an app that showed kittens every time Trump's face showed up. I watched MSNBC religiously. I have always disliked Biden but voted for him just to get Trump out. And now I don't care. I can't put myself through that again. If he wins he wins. I fought hard for abortion from 1970-1973 and abortion was my main worry the last time but no one would listen when it looked like he could stack the courts. I a thankful that I am old and don't have siblings or kids to leave behind in this crumbling civilization.

I care a lot about the murderous genocide that Israel is currently waging on the Palestinians.

I can't do shit to stop it, but I follow the daily events of this ongoing mass murder campaign, and it's infuriating and beyond heart-breaking. About 200,000 civilians so far, mostly women and children, murdered, shot, blown up in the worlds largest concentration camp.

by Anonymousreply 26July 17, 2024 7:16 AM

Recent Gaza developments, in short...

1.000 terrorist rats eliminated just this past week; Muhammad Deif, the commander of Hamas’s military wing, killed in a strike on Saturday after seven previous assassination attempts between 2001 and 2021; all four Rafah battalions nearly exhausted; IDF continues locating and cleaning endless tunnels along the Gaza-Egypt border, but that will still take months.

Increasingly, the terrorists are leaving their tunnels and setting up command centres in schools and shelters. Israel is systematically eliminating Hamas' know-how (engineers, high officials...) so they won't be able to recover anytime soon. That about covers it. Palestine will be free of Hamas by the end of this year! Or it might be turned into glass if Trump wins.

by Anonymousreply 27July 17, 2024 9:22 AM

Recent Gaza developments in short: 200,000 Palestinian civilians, mostly women and children, murdered by the Israelis. Most of Gaza in ruins. Israel is an international pariah. Red Sea closed off by Yemen.

And it's recently been acknowledged by the Israeli press that most of the Israeli civilian deaths on Oct 7 were inflicted not by Hamas but by Israel, intentionally, as part of the so called Hannibal directive. Israel deliberately murdered their own citizens.

The roof top shooter has sunk ukraines chances. The Ukraine is now on borrowed time. Sad but true.

by Anonymousreply 29July 17, 2024 9:42 AM

Ukraine has always been fucked since the Orange Revolution and before.

The US, through the CIA, has been funding and supporting the neo Nazis in East Ukraine since post WWII. Ukraine was America's useful patsy to try to destabilize the USSR, then, post 1991, Russia, ... how has that worked out.

“It may be dangerous to be America's enemy, but to be America's friend is fatal.”

― Henry "fuckface" Kissinger

by Anonymousreply 30July 17, 2024 9:51 AM

Now that Ukraine has been funded through 2024, Gaza is the only foreign policy hot spot.

Netanyahu is waging his massive war in news cycle pulses. If something brings moral outrage to his was against terrorism, then he takes a two-week vacation and lets things move on. Then he resumes. Nothing is stopping Netanyahu and now that he has boiled the protest frog, like anyone is going to take to the streets in America in 110° heat, he just needs to keep the carnage out of the American press, and he is good to go.

Plus, people read r28's bullshit and realize they are being played by pro Hamas propaganda.

Americans like pro-Israel propaganda. Nuff said.

by Anonymousreply 31July 17, 2024 12:08 PM

OP, it's not that people don't care.

by Anonymousreply 33July 17, 2024 12:25 PM

R27/R28 is why people stopped caring.

No one wants to hear about the murder of innocent civilians day after day after day.

It's too much to bear for people with a conscience.

We've had enough of it.

by Anonymousreply 34July 17, 2024 12:28 PM

r34, which is why Netanyahu has removed it from the front pages.

Same carnage, different slant...

by Anonymousreply 35July 17, 2024 12:31 PM

R35, it's very much all over the front pages, I don't know what you are talking about. And now, amazingly, it has come out that Netanyahu ordered the IDF leadership to stop recording their meetings, which they normally would do as a matter of course. I don't know why they agreed to do that. How can they defend themselves now? Everyone is free to assume the worst.

by Anonymousreply 36July 17, 2024 1:53 PM

It is all on the back burner. r36.

by Anonymousreply 37July 17, 2024 2:10 PM

Agree with OP, most people don't care except for the small margins who have close ties with Ukraine and Israel. The rest were all dilletantes mining for cred on their socials. Then "oh shit, there are consequences for acting the fool" registered in their brains and now they've moved on.

by Anonymousreply 38July 17, 2024 2:27 PM

Don’t confuse media hype and attention with the concerns of citizens.

by Anonymousreply 39July 17, 2024 3:31 PM

I disagree. People feel powerless. They are heartbreaking, scary situations. We can't cry every day, all day long over things we can't control.

by Anonymousreply 40July 17, 2024 3:44 PM

People who truly care can pick up a gun and join the fight. They can give money. They can march (but as another poster noted, they aren't going to do it in this heat). They can petition their representatives. They can boycott corporations who support the "enemy". People do have power; they just choose their own self-interests above those of others. They choose their own comfort. Virtue-signaling is cheap and easy and phony.

by Anonymousreply 46July 17, 2024 4:16 PM

If Ukraine is absorbed by Russia, Putin will set his sights on the former Soviet republics that are now independent. He would love nothing more than to recreate the Soviet Union. Some of the countries in danger are members of NATO. We would be obligated to fight Russia if he attacks them. If we withdraw from NATO, the standing our country in the world will be destroyed. No one will trust the USA for anything. So, if Russia attacks the USA, the NATO countries are no longer required to assist it.

Ukraine isn't important?

by Anonymousreply 47July 17, 2024 4:26 PM

Yeah, R46, I meant pick up a gun and fight. Put up or shut up. All these 20-something twats who have been harassing American Jews, who have been blocking Pride parades - they don't have families to care for or any lame excuse for not getting involved. I expect them to go over there and stand up for the cause that they so publicly decried on TikTok and what not. Or, to raise money. Or, to do something that means something. Don't shout phrases such as "from the river to the sea" if you're not willing to back it up.

My point is that the lot of these fools are hypocrites and cowards who care not one bit about the cause they "support" nor do they care not one bit about the fear they foment stateside with their rhetoric.

by Anonymousreply 48July 17, 2024 4:31 PM

I am not disagreeing with you

. But if you are correct that the rest of nato , minus the US who has now left nato, will be destroyed by Russia why would we give a shit what they thought about the US and its word?

We would be good friends with the winner not the losers of that war you describe. And 10000s of American troops would not have been killed.

by Anonymousreply 52July 17, 2024 5:40 PM

Countries around the world are increasingly pushing their own citizens to procreate because of diminishing quality of life. Greed-driven decay is killing hope, even in the Undying Lands of the West.

by Anonymousreply 54July 17, 2024 6:00 PM

Frankly I’m tired of hearing about either country. America is damned if they do or don’t. If we mind our own business we are accused of not caring. If we do offer our opinions we’re accused of meddling. Let these countries figure it out for themselves. Stop sending money to them. We have myriad problems within our own borders. Let’s focus on those.

by Anonymousreply 55July 17, 2024 6:05 PM

R53 but people would be better off with fewer people in the world. There is less competition for resourses. As the population grows uncontroblably, the quality of life goes down for everyone except the rich.

Exactly what posting FREE PALESTINE in the comments under a People Magazine post, or wading Into other discussions and reminding people that their problems are irrelevant compared to what is happening in Gaza will actually achieve for the cause is a mystery to me.

If they're so invested in the cause, why aren't they over there, instead of trolling on SM?

by Anonymousreply 64July 18, 2024 12:25 PM

[quote] If they're so invested in the cause, why aren't they over there, instead of trolling on SM?

This is such a dumb as fuck attitude. How would they get there? They have jobs and leases and families etc., to protest a war you don’t have to go to the war zone to protest it meaningfully. You ppl are so fucking stupid i stg.

You can’t just show up to a war zone. Ask the Red Cross to helicopter you in lol. 🙄

by Anonymousreply 65July 18, 2024 1:30 PM

You can indeed just show up in a war zone and then do shit. You can even have your picture taking sitting behind some big gun. It’s not as hard as some suggest.

by Anonymousreply 69July 18, 2024 4:15 PM

by Anonymousreply 70July 18, 2024 4:22 PM

R70 lol ok believe what you need to believe I guess.

by Anonymousreply 71July 18, 2024 4:28 PM

I am not down playing anyone’s contribution , not the Marines in the pacific or the air wings over Europe, nor what the Brit’s did all alone as long as they did, but it’s called a world war for a reason not the Russian war . Giving credit to one country alone is beyond stupid.

But in a war like that the factory workers become as important or more so than the infantry or pilots. It becomes a war of logistics and the US crushed everyone in that area,

But as to who to credit most some would say it’s the allied code breakers.

by Anonymousreply 72July 18, 2024 4:40 PM

R72 proportionally it was the soviets. The US showed up for 10seconds at the end when it became clear the soviets were going to move into Europe unstoppably and panicked.

by Anonymousreply 73July 18, 2024 4:42 PM

And it’s lucky they did in terms of the post war political landscape in Europe, but that doesn’t alter the fact that they didn’t do much otherwise.

R73 No the US showed up in Europe because Germany declared war on the U.S. in 1941 no one saw the Soviet Union taking over europe

Suggesting the US entered the war only to stop Russia, who they were arming, is beyond stupid.

by Anonymousreply 76July 18, 2024 4:50 PM

by Anonymousreply 77July 18, 2024 4:54 PM

Germany here. It's fatigue. We focus on the people who fled, who we interact with on a daily basis. Sympathies are very much against Putin but the panic to be nuked has melted into the low background noise of "guess we're fucked".

by Anonymousreply 78July 18, 2024 7:57 PM

R65, what does posting FREE PALESTINE in the comments of a People magazine SM post achieve? Or telling someone else their problems are inconsequential compared to what is happening in Gaza?

As for your other comment, I know someone (from Australia) who did and does regularly go over there to fight for the IDF when he is on leave from his job 9-5 office job. No shit. He is hard-core. He's a straight white guy with a military background who wants to kill people. Obviously anyone going over to fight for Hamas is not going to be let back into Australia, but if they're so invested in the cause, why would that bother them? If the call to the cause is so strong, why would they give a fuck about jobs, leases, families, etc?

There's nothing stopping other people from going over there and helping distribute food, water, clothing, etc to civilians.

The other thing these virtue-signalling SM trolls can do if they want to stay in their own countries is get off the internet and help organisations offering aid, or raise money for the cause. Posting FREE PALESTINE or pissing people off by telling them their issues don't matter because they're not in a war zone is not achieving anything that I can see. Quite the reverse.

Think about that next time you drop a FREE PALESTINE in the comments of a SM gossip magazine post, you stupid, ignorant fuck. You are NOT protesting meaningfully, you're just a virtue-signalling cunt.

How could the gop be so popular to so many Americans?

If you see a good looking gal or guy that you are interested in and they are turning on you and refusing you do you then claim something is wrong with them or do you ask what is wrong with you that leads to these losses.

The smart people do the latter. I realize that sounds like a strange crazy way to operate as far as politics or see the world to most of DL.

But how can I fix this often works better than thinking it’s always someone else’s fault.

As for the Middle East, it's that they seem to do this every few years, like a re-surfacing virus.

by Anonymousreply 107July 20, 2024 11:45 AM

What are we? Chopped liver?

by Anonymousreply 108July 20, 2024 3:44 PM

No, you are hamburger.

by Anonymousreply 109July 20, 2024 4:34 PM

Hamas propaganda depends on college students for free labor they are on break. They’ll be back

by Anonymousreply 110July 20, 2024 4:37 PM

I care about Israel, but at the moment, they’re taking care of business, so they got this. I also care about Ukraine, but I also acknowledge reality. The war of attrition will have to stop, and it will have a negotiated settlement. Right now everyone is accepting this as a forever war, and that’s got to change. Maybe Trump will get the warring parties to the negotiating table. Biden could do it first if he wanted to become a peacemaker before he leaves office.

by Anonymousreply 111July 20, 2024 4:56 PM

You think Putin wants to see Biden go out with a big win , the great peace maker , maybe so that Trump won’t come in and get credit?

It’s an interesting theory if so

by Anonymousreply 112July 20, 2024 5:05 PM

Compassion Fatigue, OP.

by Anonymousreply 113July 20, 2024 5:12 PM

R110 those college students Free Palestine protesters ain't shit. They should have tolm Mom they won't be coming to Martha's Vineyard this summer, that they will make a sacrifice and stay in their Upper east site 10 bedroom penthouse under aif condition so they could go to the protests.

by Anonymousreply 114July 20, 2024 8:40 PM

Truly dark events happening in Israel right now which should turn anybody’s stomach. After a group of Israeli soldiers were arrested for rape and torture of detainees at an Israeli detention centre, Israelis are storming public buildings on behalf of those soldiers who have been detained? Supporting their right to rape and abuse prisoners.

by Anonymousreply 115July 30, 2024 2:29 PM

*Palestinian detainees obviously.

Some seriously upsetting content in media, from the BBC article above:

[quote] He is said to have been hospitalised after what Israeli media reports describe as serious sexual abuse and injuries to his anus that left him unable to walk.

And from the guardian article below:

[quote] Detainees including children “reported being forced into cages and attacked by dogs”, they said, while others had lasting wounds from their beatings, including with metal bars.

[quote] Detainees also described abuse that included “insults and humiliation such as being made to act like animals or getting urinated on, use of loud music and noise, deprivation of water, food, sleep and toilets, denial of the right to pray and prolonged use of tightly locked handcuffs causing open wounds and friction injuries”, the report said.

[quote] The UN said in June that an estimated 27 detainees have died in custody on Israeli military bases, including Sde Teiman, while at least four more have died in the Israeli prison system due to beatings or denial of medical treatment.

Despicable, but unsurprising behaviour from the Israelis. I said it before on another thread, this will end in the ICC.

R115, there have been stories about the Sde Teiman facility for months. Medical personal may have witnessed some of the abuse and done nothing, or actually participated in it. These particular arrests happened because of a NYTimes story which buries awful details about prisoners being raped with electric rods.

Any time I have the slightest bit of compassion for the poor widdle Palestinians and their suffering at the hands of the big bad evil Zionist thugs, I just take a glance at some of the videos from October 7th. Watch the mobs in Gaza cheering ecstatically as Israeli corpses get paraded around. Some even kick or spit on the dead bodies. Listen to the terrorist gleefully calling his parents and talking about killing Jews.

Textbook definition of FAFO. They wanted a bloodbath and they got one. They elected Hamas, and even now still support them, so as far as I'm concerned they can go to hell with them.

by Anonymousreply 118July 30, 2024 2:46 PM

Terribly irresponsible on their part, I didn’t see that article R117. The events of the past few days also indicating that a large group of the Israeli populace is willing to violently protest FOR their soldiers’ right to rape and abuse.

by Anonymousreply 119July 30, 2024 2:46 PM

R118 coming out as a supporter of rape, torture and war crimes isn’t a personal victory for you, you know that right?

by Anonymousreply 120July 30, 2024 2:48 PM

R118

By widdle are you referring to infants and young children you don’t care about or to short people?

by Anonymousreply 121July 30, 2024 2:50 PM

OP, sadly this is the nature of infotainment: issues are exploited to the point of saturation, until something new that will generate the maximum possible amount of views comes along. Independently of our ideology, we should remember that this is a commodification of the human experience to the level of tabloid fodder, and we must fight against it.

Also, political agents do have an impact on the sort of news that are discussed, especially during electoral campaigns, when parties want all attention to be on their candidates and everything else to be relegated to the background. And this is precisely why the internet is so very important, because these subjects are kept alive thanks to the people who are willing to discuss them.

by Anonymousreply 122July 30, 2024 2:56 PM

it's a crazy election year, OP, even europeans are looking at our elections

by Anonymousreply 123July 30, 2024 2:58 PM

About as much as you care about the Israeli children (and I suppose any short people too) taken hostage or murdered on October 7th, r121.

by Anonymousreply 124July 30, 2024 3:42 PM

R124 I am old. I hate to see any children burnt to a crisp or de-headed. And I don’t care what country they come from.

I realize how that makes me sound.

by Anonymousreply 125July 30, 2024 3:54 PM

I just read a story in the Daily Fail where they interviewed a man, a tennis coach. When the conflict started he was running and some Hamas members grabbed him, dragged him into a bombed building and proceeded to gang rape and torture him.

It’s like the Wild, Wild West.

by Anonymousreply 126July 30, 2024 4:43 PM

I don't need any proof for that, r126! I accept that completely as the truth.

by Anonymousreply 127July 30, 2024 4:45 PM

I still follow updates on Ukraine because the security of Ukraine affects all of the western world.

Israel/Palestine, all of the Middle East really, has been problematic for as long as time. They're never going to stop fighting. As long as it stays contained there, I can't get too worked up about it.

by Anonymousreply 128July 30, 2024 4:58 PM

Gaza is a news cycle war. Ukraine can be the prelude to WW3

by Anonymousreply 129December 29, 2024 2:53 AM

I think a big chunk of Americans are just tired of hearing about it. It doesn't seem relevant to their daily lives and the endless talking and back and forth just gets boring.

by Anonymousreply 130December 29, 2024 3:05 AM

Well, since most of us are worrying what the idiot Republicans are going to do next, those awful ongoing atrocities HAVE slid a bit down our list of concerns.

by Anonymousreply 131December 29, 2024 3:18 AM

OP's point is that American voters did not actually care about the wars when they were daily news either. We were just fed hysteria to influence their votes.

by Anonymousreply 132December 29, 2024 5:01 AM

Americans are alas by nature isolationists

by Anonymousreply 133December 29, 2024 5:04 AM

Because there are no genuine threats to our borders R133. Why should we be the mercenaries for global trading systems. The only country less dependent on trade than we are is probably Russia, which is why our boycott hasn't achieved very much.

by Anonymousreply 134December 29, 2024 5:27 AM

r133, alas, WW2 made us the only superpower on earth.

You do not remain the only superpower on earth if you suddenly revert to pre Pearl Harbor isolationism.

Isolationism is just part of the mechanisms that enable Trump to steal the Treasury.

Connect the dots.

by Anonymousreply 135December 29, 2024 1:07 PM

The world is not enough OP. We do care, but we care more about Wicked.

by Anonymousreply 136December 29, 2024 1:09 PM

The media manipulation and the financing of demonstrators on the Gaza issues has stopped. Israel just bombed a hospital. No one seemed to notice. And it was pretty evident that among the protesters were a few paid agitators fueling the action. It has worked for decades. Back in the 60's non violent Civil Rights demonstrations were often infiltrated by paid violent agitators. And we actually saw them in action during the January 6th insurrection encouraging the sheeple to join them in entering the Capitol. People are way too easy to be manipulated. The media sets the agenda. Look at how they performed in the recent Presidential cycle. We should be smarter.

by Anonymousreply 137December 29, 2024 1:21 PM

R137, the protests weren’t “financed.” They have now been repressed; enough students were arrested or kicked out. That does not mean that anyone’s opinion has been changed.

by Anonymousreply 138December 29, 2024 1:56 PM

Gaza will be an outline on a beach map and Ukraine will not cease to exist.

by Anonymousreply 139December 29, 2024 6:15 PM

[quote] will not cease to exist.

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 140December 29, 2024 8:08 PM

Would you have preferred continue to exist?

by Anonymousreply 141December 29, 2024 11:46 PM

We are holding a collective breath.

Gaza will be pushed into the sea with the West Bank coming up n

Biden has severed American ties in Europe in advance of Trump exiting NATO. GO JOE!

by Anonymousreply 142January 19, 2025 2:38 AM

I care

by Anonymousreply 143January 19, 2025 2:42 AM

Putin is as poisonous as Trump.

by Anonymousreply 144January 19, 2025 2:47 AM

it has been a practice for decades to use our vulnerabilities against us. I saw it with Civil Rights activists, BLM activists, Anti Vietnam War activists, etc., etc.. A subset of people have legitimate concerns. They march or demonstrate on campuses, etc. I remember during the Gulf War back in 1991 demonstrators shut down the Bay Bridge. And our foreign adversaries, particularly Russia (they have been the most consistent) have paid agitators who infiltrate these groups and instigate violence or at least fire up public opinion and mobilize the masses. These paid agitators usually have no idea they're being used in this way.

The concerns of the people are legitimate, but the movement gets hijacked. Then, suddenly it dies out. News coverage, the hyping of the situation dies out too. And very often the Media has deliberately hyped the situation, featuring the cops arresting demonstrators, and people getting pepper sprayed, which further inflames things, because they've also been corrupted. People in Gaza are still getting slaughtered, dying because they have no food or water, no hospitals functioning, etc. what has happened there is hideous. And Netanyahu still does not give a fuck.

And the reason there has been no peace agreement is that once Biden grudgingly got Netanyahu to capitulate, Iran was bribing HAMAS...with Russian money...to disrupt the peace process. And since Netanyahu never really gave a fuck about rescuing hostages he folded like a cheap suit. It would not surprise me at all, if this last minute effort by Biden, who did all the heavy lifting, gets derailed again at the last minute, so that Trump can "rescue" the deal and look like a hero. Russia and it's clients and the people who act on their behalf have created more trouble and terror and harm in this world that anyone dreamed possible. And this has been true since the Cold War began in the 1950's.

by Anonymousreply 145January 19, 2025 3:42 AM

R145, Iran and Russia were paying Hamas to interfere with the peace process? Everyone saw that Netanyahu spiked every attempt at negotiation because he wanted to stay in office. Even now he’s ranting and raving about starting up the war and how he’s not going to pull back Israeli troops from the Egyptian border even though he agreed to do so.

by Anonymousreply 146January 19, 2025 10:31 AM

+Netanyahu was taken money from Putin in the past. He is a vile POS who ought to be in Prison. He is Israel's Trump.

by Anonymousreply 147January 19, 2025 3:34 PM

Former ISraeli Prime Minister was on CNN today and he was commenting on the hostage releases and mentioned in passing that, "the Leadership in Israel needs to be "refreshed..." Which I thought was an artful way to say BeBe's got to go! LOL!

by Anonymousreply 148January 19, 2025 5:42 PM

OP is conflating "America" with what propaganda the news cycle deigns to promulgate.
