Technically, I was born in Petersburg, Alaska, although my parents lived in a Tlingit village called Kake on an island in southeast Alaska that was too small to have a hospital. My mom was flown from there to Petersburg when she went into labor.
Both parents are dead now, so I’ll never know why two Caucasian people decided to go teach in a place where everyone else was Tlingit. It wasn’t a religious reason, whatever it was.
They left for the lower 48 when I was two, so I know next to nothing about Alaska.

We lived in a one-room, run-down shack on the outskirts of New Orleans. We didn't have money for food or rent, to say the least we were hard-pressed. Then mama spent every last penny we had to buy me a dancin' dress.
She said, "Here's your one chance, Fancy, don't let me down! Here's your one chance, Fancy, don't let me down! Lord, forgive me for what I do but if you want out, well, it's up to you. Now, don't let me down, now your mama's gonna move you uptown.”

I was born one block from a pub that was to become one of this city’s most famous gay pubs. My dad took all of his cricket teammates to the pub to celebrate, according to my mum.
Nineteen years later I took my first tentative steps into the same pub, now unequivocally gay (me and the pub) and looked back a little but not a lot.
It’s now a Nike store.
