It's CHERRY SEASON!
Is anyone else enjoying the bounty of cherries this Summer?
The Bings are plump and juicy this year.
I've also been introduced to Rainier cherries, which aren't as good as Bing cherries, but they stay firm longer.
Cherries are so good, and good for you!

They’re so good. Wish I could find fresh tart cherries anywhere.

They've been on sale at my local Safeway since June, R1.
This year's crop is especially sweet and juicy.

Loveliest of trees, the cherry now.

This is the first time I've ever bought cherries. They are so delicious. Why didn't I ever buy cherries before?

So far I have made several cherry tarts (fresh cherries layered on pastry cream in a shell) and a cherry clafoutis (cherries baked in an almond custard). Next up, a fresh fruit salad featuring cherries, red grapes, strawberries, and a touch of lime zest. At the end of the season it will be cherries jubilee.
Thank god I own a cherry pitter!

Speaking of cherries jubilee R6, I made a little sundae with French Vanilla Ice Cream, Whipped Cream, an Oreo Cookie, and Fresh Cherries on top.
It was so decadent and so good!

I live in Leelanau County, MI, where cherries of all varieties are grown. I grew up in Traverse City, "Cherry Capital of the World". I hate to be a cherry snob but Bing cherries are complete crap compared to our local varieties. Nobody around here would ever bother buying them. They are not even considered cherries around here. Living in Michigan has a few compensations and sensational cherries are among them.

What would you consider the best cherry variety R8, and can you get them outside of Michigan?

This happens every summer OP

Rainier (/reɪˈnɪər/ ray-NEER) is a cultivar of cherry. It was developed in 1952 at Washington State University by Harold Fogle, and named after Mount Rainier. It is a cross between the Bing and Van cultivars.
Rainiers are considered a premium type of cherry. They are sweet with a thin skin and thick creamy-yellow flesh. The cherries are susceptible to temperature, wind, and rain, and the flesh is generally more watery than other sweet cherries.
Rainiers are grown mainly in the Northwestern United States region, in the states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming. Washington state is the top producer.

Not a fan of Rainier cherries. They're very pretty but expensive and lack flavour. Give me Bing or whatever that Michigander considers real cherries.
Has aanyone tried making a homemade version of Luxardo maraschino cherries? Those things are exquisite!

Right now California cherries from the Central Valley are fantastic and cheaper than Rainiers, which don't seem to be at their peak yet. This has been the best local cherry season I can remember. I made crepes filled with cooked fresh cherries and sour cream. Fantastic!

I wouldn't even know how to begin making maraschino cherries.
I'd probably end up pickling them.

Mine too!
I like old, dried up and shriveled cherries with no juice.

The cherries are super this year and so are the strawberries. I spent all my money on them but it was worth it.

r6 thanks for mentioning your cherry pitter. I’ve always scoffed at them, but after you cited it, I decided to get one. Magic!

Where I live, cherries are gone. Plums are peak, peaches, too.

Yes, I've been buying Morada cherries (California) from Costco. They're Bing cherries, I guess. I prefer them to the Rainier.
The last batch I bought were HUUUGE. Each cherry was like double-sized.

Check Safeway/Albertsons.
That's where I've been buying mine.

They’re never gone, they just become 8 dollars a pound. If he can afford Rainier cherries, he’s worth keeping.

My neighbor Sheila up the road here in La Jolla made a ton of Cherry themed homemade ice cream for her grandchildren who were going to visit her for the month of August, then her dickhead son cancelled the plans (insane Iowan dtrumper)
So, I am getting homemade Cherry Ice cream& Cherry Vanilla and Chocolate Cherry with white& dark fudge pieces ice cream. Life is Good, eat homemade Cherry Ice Cream. Also, Sheila makes Homemade fruit Vodka, right now it's Cherry, Peach and Plum. God, I love my neighbors.

Poor Sheila, R30.
That story makes me sad.
She was so excited about her grandkids visiting her, and then her asshole son cancels on her.
That's so mean.
