Legz+ may have split up with Siniakova. I clocked that he wasn't in her box for the Women's Dubs finals. Apparently Toma has deleted a bunch of posts featuring her on Instagram and has unfollowed her.

R10 Yes. I love how Spanish men are so touchy-feely with each other. It's probably why my gaydar is so messed up when it comes to Spanish guys, lol. Even the heteros hug and show affection!

Barbora gave an interview early in the tourney, apparently, where she was asked if she has a message for her lgbt fans.
She called them amazing and brave. As they noted on the Tennis Podcast, most players would have avoiding answering that question.
She’s such a quiet person that one doesn’t line up behind her, but she seems lovely.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 15, 2024 10:17 AM |
Good observation, R16. I started to notice Zielinski a few months ago. At first I wasn't sure I liked his demeanor, but then I noticed that ass and his interactions with Hsieh. He seemed to be having the time of his life with her, getting such a kick out of her skills and personality to the point that he was often smiling and laughing....and then that ass, too.

Chris Eubanks, recently cratered in the rankings - now out of range of auto entry into Slams, Masters, 500s, and even some 250s - is playing Newport. His Cinderella story is over. It was great, but he didn't do anything with his year of being able to play any tournament without qualifying. That said, at least he had his run (Miami QF, Mallorca win, Wimbledon QF) and got to not live the journeyman life for a year. We'll see how much longer he continues, or whether he retires and becomes a commentator - as he had talked about before (and he's been broadly complimented for his commentating). Or, as he had been doing before his run, he may continue to plug away AND do commentator work.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 15, 2024 8:02 PM |
Is he going to be commentator?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | July 15, 2024 8:10 PM |
I have to say, Newport really does look shabby - like they've randomly stuck a grass court in the middle of a field.
The court stands and seating look they've not changed since the mid '70s.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 15, 2024 8:33 PM |
I think that's always been part of the charm, R33. Anyway, this is the last year of the Newport tournament.

[quote] Anyway, this is the last year of the Newport tournament.
Did not know that. I guess it loses money?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | July 15, 2024 9:48 PM |
Not sure, R37. They've made a lot of changes to the calendar lately, especially at the 250-500 level. Newport IMO was an easy target because it's a grass court tournament AFTER Wimbledon, so not a tune up. And since a few years ago they increased the weeks between The French Open and Wimbledon from two weeks to three weeks, I can seeing Newport as even more unnecessary as the time between Wimbledon and the USO is decreased by a week. That said, they play on clay right after Wimbledon even though the season is generally turning to hard courts for the summer, so having a random grass court tournament doesn't seem any worse. Newport had a following. It was like a throwback in time and coincided with Hall of Fame induction ceremony. I'd think there were enough sponsors to continue, but I don't know.

I miss Wimbledon! We're having a shitty (rainy) summer where I live, and tuning into the Championship on the BBC every afternoon (with those familiar soothing commentator voices) at least evokes a feeling of summer.
I'm of the Edberg/Becker/Sampras/Capriati generation and didn't watch live tennis for years, but I've come to like, and root for, some of this generation's players.
R38: very informative post, thank you.

Down 65+ spots after Wimbledon to No. 125 range, Chris Eubanks wins his first round in Newport. Since the entry cutoff was weeks before the tournament, he was ranked high enough for auto entry. And he's actually seeded 4 since Newport started the week after Wimbledon, so they would have done the draw last Friday or this past weekend, and Eubanks' dropped ranking wouldn't be official until this Monday (two days ago). A couple of players seeded lower than him or unseeded are ranked higher than him now. Would be cool if he won the tourney after this up and down rankings journey.

Zverev getting booed by the crowd in Germany - he's just lost the first set against Hugo Gaston and is throwing his toys out the pram.
Straight up delicious!
by Anonymous | reply 67 | July 18, 2024 5:29 PM |
I love Gaston. He's the guy who seemingly did three lines of coke before playing Sinner at the French - was so hyped he was coming out of his shoes and played WAY beyond his normal level for 1.5 sets (winning the first set handily and having no fear) before he came off his high and simultaneously Sinner got his game together.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | July 18, 2024 5:48 PM |
R68 I like Gaston, too. I know he's done some questionable stuff in the past, but he's one of the most entertaining players on the tour. You never quite know what you're going to get.

McEnroe was obnoxious with the umpires and infamously got defaulted from the AO for that, but I don't think he ever took it to a physical level like Zverev did.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | July 19, 2024 10:34 PM |
R85, no he didn't, but I do recall there was an occasion or two where his opponents attempted to go after him physically because of his behavior.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | July 20, 2024 7:44 AM |
McEnroe is particularly known for his outbursts, especially "YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!" But Connors was probably just as bad.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | July 20, 2024 8:40 AM |
Connors was worse because his antics were a tactic to unnerve his opponents and of course there was the time that he ran to the other side of the court to erase the mark with his foot back in the day at the U.S. Open when it was on clay. McEnroe's outbursts were completely self-focused and spoke to his own perfectionism and self-centredness. Connors' were the manipulative ploy of a nasty competitor.

It was a lot more than that, R112. He didn't like a call that the umpire in Acapulco made. At the end of the match, he stomped up to the umpire and smashed his racket into the umpire's chair several times demolishing the racket and either hitting the umpire's foot with the racket or just barely missed it within a fraction of an inch. Screaming obscenities, meanwhile scowling and grimacing like an insane serial abuser who wouldn't have a shred of impulse control when needed in other situations.

He seems to know what he's doing and she's hopeless! She puts her right hand under his left (which is wrong) but after he spins her around, he manages to sort of correct the hand positions. Boy's had some ballroom lessons? or some kind of experience dancing anyway.
I also love her dress!

R145 The tension was mounting all the way through the third set. Fils was kind of clinging on in his service games which was frustrating Zverev.
Towards the sharp end of the set, Fils started to come back strongly - I forget which game it was: 5-5 or 5-6, but Fils served underarm on game point down. He faulted, but won the point on his second serve when Zverev hit long. Zverev was clearly pissed about it - the underarm serve - then made comments directly to Fils as he was walking back to his chair at the end of the game (which Fils won). Apparently, Zverev was saying "Zero respect!"
At this point, the underarm serve has become an accepted tactic, so Zverev really can't complain. It's typical of his weak mentality that he lets these things constantly derail him.

Giron of the Great Ass is playing now. I hope DL hasn't jinxed him.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | July 21, 2024 7:16 PM |
Fils also stated that he was cramping badly so that his best option was the underarm serve. He not only beat Zverev, but also the Hamburg crowd blindly supporting their hometown boy.
Even Zverev is being passive aggressive here with the bottle, forcing Fils off the pedestal. That said, there's some undeniable erotic undertones.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | July 21, 2024 7:30 PM |
I thought the Hamburg crowd was not fully supportive of Zverev based on applause and cheers. Perhaps they just wanted a continuation of a good match?
by Anonymous | reply 152 | July 21, 2024 7:32 PM |
Zverev then says "zero respect" to Fils at the changeover, to which Fils responds. Tennis Channel, as usual, gets it wrong.

r151 Zverev got a bad start in the first set. He had problems with his blood sogar, as he is suffering from type 1 diabetis, and he could not stand the heat and humidity in Hamburg. Set 2 went better and he won And then the epic drama unfolded. He got 20! break chances and could not win one! One single break point, and he would walk away as the champion. They played 3:30 for a best of three. It was pure adrenalin in every game of the third set. It is labelled as one of the tightis set in the history of the ATP tour ever. Fils got the better end by dominating the tiebreak.
by Anonymous | reply 177 | July 22, 2024 1:17 PM |
Zverev basically handed the match to Fils after that 'zero respect' comment. Fils went on a tear in the tiebreak and won easily. Don't poke the bear, you'll get the claws. I'm so happy for Fils!
by Anonymous | reply 178 | July 22, 2024 1:22 PM |
Zverev so desperately wants to see himself in the Novak mould - the same chip on their shoulders about other players, officials, crowds etc. 'owing them' respect and support. Zverev just loves mouthing off to opponents during matches, and his aggressive and/or patronising 'lectures' at the net post match.
As irritating and arrogant as Novak is, at least he can bring the receipts in terms of achievements. The RFC? Not so much.
by Anonymous | reply 179 | July 22, 2024 1:46 PM |
R177, it's not clear whether you're being an apologist for Zverev or what. Yes, he deserves some credit for overcoming type 1 diabetes to get near the highest ATP echelon. But that doesn't excuse his RFC MO.
by Anonymous | reply 180 | July 22, 2024 3:42 PM |
r188. I am probably the only person in the universe, or at least on DL, supporting Zverev. He is for sure no sunny boy like Alcaraz. But I like his performance on the court and watch him playing. For his size of 1,98 he has an outsstanding body feeling.
I do also not like his attitude on court some times.
But I also don't like the notoriously repeating calling him an abuser on DL. There were two women, who wanted to destroy him. They both got their lessons from the Junge.
by Anonymous | reply 181 | July 22, 2024 4:35 PM |
Okay, this is the last time I'll beat this dead horse.
We don't know what happened with Zverev and his baby mama or the previous GF. We do know that he attacked an umpire in Acapulco. The ATP did almost nothing in response (a default and a fine for what to him is chump change). That's inexcusable on both Zverev's part and the ATP's. RFC should have been booted out of the ATP entirely.

by Anonymous | reply 183 | July 22, 2024 7:43 PM |
Like I said, dead horse. Buh-bye.
Tennis up until Connors and Nastase had players who were good sports. For the most part, it still does. Enough so that the exceptions get mentioned unfavorably. Often.
As for Nick K, he's gotten plenty of bad bogan posts in these threads. Now not so much because he's a has been and never made much of a dent anyway beyond one Wimby final and a few GS quarters. More notoriety for his behavior than for his accomplishments.
If you don't like my posts, feel free to skip over them. Please.

"And then the epic drama unfolded. He got 20! break chances and could not win one! One single break point, and he would walk away as the champion."
Unless all the break points were on match point, there's no guarantee that converting a break point would win him the match.
by Anonymous | reply 187 | July 22, 2024 9:54 PM |
r187. Yes. But he missed the chance to make a break in the third set. One break ahead to Fils would have changed the game. So it was only the tiebrake which brought Fils the victory. Every game before was very tight with deuce and advantage on both sides. So nearly 20 break chances for Zverev and he brought none of them home.

R189, next "big" tournament is the Olympics - lots of stars, lots of coverage. After that, the back to back Masters in Canada and Cincinnati, which are both in August after the Olympics. Washington DC which will be played during the Olympics always has a decent field, but it's not "big big" - an ATP 500 - minus some players it might usually have because they're playing the Olympics.

R193, this week is just a handful of smaller clay court events which are serving as warmups for the Olympics next week - Kitzbuhel, Umag for the ATP; Romania and Prague for the WTA. Plus, Atlanta, an ATP 250 hard court event - with a bunch of players who either didn't qualify or who chose to skip the Olympics and who will stay in North American until the US Open.
R194, it doesn't start until next week.

In re Opelka: I listened to the latest edition of Andy Roddick's podcast and he had John Isner on. They talked about a lot of topics, including life on tour, making friends, etc. They were reminiscing a little about people they hung out with, how there's some guys they got a long with but really didn't hang out with. Isner was saying how he had nothing in common with some of the guys coming up when he was in his career, including Opelka. He was talking about how Opelka likes fashion and art, as where Isner likes to fish and do other outdoor stuff. He related how Opelka's the one guy if asked what was the score of last night's Super Bowl, he wouldn't know, since he doesn't watch sports. They discussed the Isner-Mahut match, retirement, college tennis, how Tommy Paul completely turned himself around as he used to be a big partier. Isner talked about how Paul was set to go to Georgia but it was probably for the best that he didn't as Isner "knows Athens" and the party scene. Isner said how "the ladies love Tommy" and it would have been "very hard for Tommy not to go out." It was all pretty funny.
by Anonymous | reply 254 | July 25, 2024 10:37 PM |
Is deplorable Isner somehow trying to imply that Opelka is gay?
I think Daddy Fritz and Chewbacca Opelka are close friends.
by Anonymous | reply 255 | July 25, 2024 10:43 PM |
It actually didn't come across at all that Isner was implying that Opelka was gay - and Roddick talked about Opelka too. Isner was just saying that the younger guys coming up behind him, specifically Fritz, Opelka, Tiafoe - he got along with them just fine but didn't really hang out with them. The "little in common" also applied to Fritz and Tiafoe. None of the conversation was derogatory or malicious. It was in good spirits and everyone they talked about they complimented. Isner was pretty self-effacing throughout.
by Anonymous | reply 256 | July 25, 2024 10:51 PM |
Nobody in the tennis world has a bad thing to say about Isner. He's universally liked.
Of course, here on the DL ...
by Anonymous | reply 257 | July 25, 2024 10:53 PM |
I think it's his politics and support for Trump, R257, not so much how he is personally (I know, "duh"). Isner seems like some white guy Republicans I know - "on the ground"/in person they're relatively cool, nice, friendly people. You just question their politics in this age of extreme politics. Like sure, I get you like Trump's unabashed personality in an era of extreme image management, but do you really understand what he stands for and how it could be destructive.

The finals for this 2 of this week's tournaments are set:
Kitbuhel:
BerretTEAMmi or HUGOAT Team?
Umag:
Musetti Team or Cerundolo Team?

I think Alcaraz might be a Kinsey 1 or 2, mostly straight, but with some same-sex tendencies. His interactions with other guys makes me suspicious. He is very touchy-feely. His close relationship with Ferrero too. It's the way they look at each other and hug each other, they seem close. Alcaraz is young, horny, hot and Spanish. Many Spanish guys are bi. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he dabbled. But sure, I've no doubt he is mostly into women.

I remember back in the '80s there was a bit of scandal with Boris Becker because he was apparently wearing himself out with all the sex he was having and his form took a dip. Would be interesting if Carlos struggled at the Olympics because he was having too much sex in the athletes' village.

R308 He would be struggling anyway because this is BO3, not BO5.

Good to see matches taking place in the sunshine in Paris today.
So far, a good day for the Brits and the French: Draper, Evans, the UGOAT, and Moutet through the first round.
Bad day for the USA: Giron (of The Great Ass) and Stretch Eubanks out. Although, ODS Tommy up in the first set against Darderi.

Peacock Announcer: “No one has won more Grand Slams than Novak Djokovic. 24” what would they call it if he won 4 majors in a single calendar year? When did a grand slam become synonymous with Major? IGA LOST HAHAHA
by Anonymous | reply 468 | August 1, 2024 12:02 PM |
And she is GONE! Zheng wins
by Anonymous | reply 469 | August 1, 2024 12:03 PM |
Iga litters the court with unforced errors and goes down to Q.W. Zheng in the semis. She was her usual dour self and only gave Zheng a cursory handshake and didn't shake the chair umpire's hand, after the umpire wouldn't overrule a call on match point.
by Anonymous | reply 470 | August 1, 2024 12:05 PM |
Iga first, Novak next, please!
by Anonymous | reply 471 | August 1, 2024 12:08 PM |

Cute Casper Team or FAA Team?
The Great Satan Team or Citybus Team?
Lovely Lore Team or The RFC Team?
by Anonymous | reply 473 | August 1, 2024 12:12 PM |
I love both Casper and Felix so damn.
Guess I'll go with Tommy for the hell of it - Lore - and never ever the Djoke (go away, Andrew Tate lover!) so run over him, Citybus! Find a backhand!

[quote]What did Collins say?
I guess Iga said she was sorry Danielle had to retire because she was injured but Danielle felt she was being insincere because her behavior in the lockerroom isn't so nice
by Anonymous | reply 475 | August 1, 2024 1:14 PM |
That's a petty thing for Danielle to call out Iga on to her face. She may be a fake, but many players are different people on the court and in the locker room. Just curtly say "thank you" and move on. Although, maybe she has been a raging cunt in the locker room all this time and the animosity that's been building up on the tour is now boiling over. Regardless, there are better ways to signal that. I wonder if that interaction rattled Iga and contributed to her loss today?
by Anonymous | reply 476 | August 1, 2024 1:29 PM |
Chrisdie was a stone-cold bitch on court, and a party chick in the locker room.

I love it, r475! Danielle is definitely at a point in her career when she's just gonna say exactly what's on her mind (even more so that she did in the past).

Suck that Tommy lost but at least Musetti took out that douchebag. Now all that I ask is that Daddy and Tommy put a fork in Misery's career.
by Anonymous | reply 486 | August 1, 2024 3:02 PM |
Casper does look hot in the Danish kit. Looks like he's going down to an inspired Felix - a set and a break up.

Fucking Citybus - 40-0 up... 3 set points... blows every one of them - his errors, not Novak winners... then loses the game.
Mental midget.
by Anonymous | reply 493 | August 1, 2024 6:52 PM |
Citybus is such a flop.
by Anonymous | reply 494 | August 1, 2024 7:24 PM |
R494 Yeah, that was pretty pathetic. 4-0 up in the second set, and just let it slip away. Novak was really not playing particularly well.
Just hope that Novak plays at the same level tomorrow and Lorenzo can keep riding the wave of form he's on.
by Anonymous | reply 495 | August 1, 2024 7:29 PM |
Yay, Daddy and Tommy have not only entered the medal round but also ended Misery's career!
by Anonymous | reply 496 | August 1, 2024 7:41 PM |
Ah, Andy. I love him. So sad to see the end. What a great player, wow.
by Anonymous | reply 497 | August 1, 2024 7:43 PM |
Lovely to see the crowd chanting Andy's name.
He's incredibly popular, influential and a really nice bloke. The whole "Misery" thing is so disrespectful.
by Anonymous | reply 499 | August 1, 2024 7:47 PM |
So at least one of the American men's doubles team wins an Olympic medal, averting a shut-out!
by Anonymous | reply 500 | August 1, 2024 7:50 PM |
To be fair, I think Andy would see the funny side of it. He's never taken himself too seriously, which is one of things that have made him such a mensch. If you've ever followed his social media banter with Liam Broady he can clearly take - and give - a joke.
by Anonymous | reply 501 | August 1, 2024 7:51 PM |
R501 Which makes the whole "Misery" thing so ridiculous.
Either it applies to him or it doesn't.
by Anonymous | reply 502 | August 1, 2024 7:54 PM |
I think he would agree that his on court demeanour is often the epitome of anguish and 'misery'. As I said, he doesn't take himself too seriously - I'm sure he's aware of how he comes across, and is self-assured enough not to care - unlike a certain Mr Djokovic.
by Anonymous | reply 503 | August 1, 2024 7:57 PM |
Legz+ onto next round in Mixed. He really does like flaunting those gams.
by Anonymous | reply 505 | August 1, 2024 8:30 PM |
It's the finals! He's guaranteed a silver or gold. So proud of Our Boy!
by Anonymous | reply 506 | August 1, 2024 8:35 PM |
So it's Vekic Vs Zheng in the Women's final. How very Puigian!
by Anonymous | reply 507 | August 1, 2024 8:53 PM |
The 'Misery' moniker refers to his on-court demeanor. He's famous for 'chirping' at his box, berating himself, and looking like he'd rather be anywhere else than on the tennis court. It's strange for a guy who so obviously loves the game. Off court, he's witty, self-deprecating, and pretty progressive. People love him for that. On court, he's often miserable.
by Anonymous | reply 508 | August 1, 2024 9:16 PM |
He's concentrating. Would you call a player of any other nationality "Misery" about a player giving their best focus? Or is it your xenophobia?
by Anonymous | reply 510 | August 1, 2024 9:43 PM |
I live in Scotland. A common greeting here to a good friend is "Ya cunt!"
Please, please, believe me, he wouldn't be upset abut the 'Misery' moniker and would find it funny.

Tennis fan newbie here. How do they determine who gets the bronze medal in men singles? When both Musetti and FAA lose their semi-final matches, who gets the bronze? Am I being stoopid here?
by Anonymous | reply 516 | August 2, 2024 12:51 AM |
The two losing semifinalists compete in a deciding match for the bronze.

R516 yes—you are
by Anonymous | reply 518 | August 2, 2024 1:05 AM |
Ah, both semifinalist should get Bronze, or at least the one the Gold medalist beat.
by Anonymous | reply 519 | August 2, 2024 1:16 AM |
I see, that would make sense I guess. I've never paid attention to Olympic tennis in the past.
by Anonymous | reply 520 | August 2, 2024 1:21 AM |
It’s not just tennis—same for most (or all?) events that are “elimination” type tournaments.
by Anonymous | reply 521 | August 2, 2024 1:32 AM |
In Boxing bronze medals are given to both semi-finalists.
by Anonymous | reply 522 | August 2, 2024 3:11 AM |
When tennis first came back the Olympics in 1988, bronze was awarded to both losing semifinalists. The same in 1992. Starting in 1996, they've played a bronze medal match, so only one player or team wins a bronze.

Yikes, what happened in the Felix v. Alcaraz match?! I thought that Felix could at least make it interesting, maybe losing in straights but only a break in each set. Did anybody here watch the match? Was it a bad combination of Felix having an off day and Alcaraz being in the zone?
by Anonymous | reply 532 | August 2, 2024 3:38 PM |
Alcaraz just has too much game. Felix was winning only half the points on his first serve and Carlitos was bullying him around the court.
Power, precision, and that drop shot... TMG
by Anonymous | reply 533 | August 2, 2024 3:41 PM |
I just hope Carlitos can continue in exactly the same form if he faces Novak in the final.

Carlos at his best is better than everyone. He has a perfect record this year vs top 5. He is mad with talent and happens to be as delightful as he is talented. Hope he can stay healthy because he is on the level of the big 3, even more successful than all 3 at the same age.

Denis Shapovalov was defaulted from his Citi DC Open quarter-final against Ben Shelton after appearing to swear at a member of the crowd – before turning his ire onto the tournament supervisor Roland Herfe
Part of the rant was inaudible, but at one stage he clearly said: “I’ve worked hard all my life…f**k you.”
The Canadian will be stripped of the prize money and ranking points he had earned in the US capital – a significant blow for the world No 139, who is looking to restore his ranking after a wrist injury.

I'd agree, it can be arbitrary. BUT, all the players would know this, so it's doubly important to not be an ass - since you don't know when a code violation will result in a warning, point penalty, or something more serious. Shapo did something that under the Code CAN be grounds for default - that's all he needed to know. He doesn't have much of an argument just because it doesn't always result in default.

Every time Alcaraz gets cocky he loses. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Remember when he was asked about the sleeveless shirt at the USO? He said he was happy playing with it because so did Rafa and he won, so it was a good omen. Then he lost. This time he said he was gonna win the gold for Spain. Not "I'll try my best". No. He was gonna win it. So of course he lost.
by Anonymous | reply 584 | August 4, 2024 3:14 PM |
He was pretty sloppy today. Novak's level was relentless, and I think anyone at their best would've struggled to beat him - but there were half a dozen pretty crucial break point opportunities that Carlitos just fluffed.
