Tori Spellings has dibs on her stuff.

by Anonymousreply 335August 5, 2024 4:27 PM

Well, damn, what a weekend this has been.

by Anonymousreply 1July 14, 2024 12:34 PM

Jesus Christ, what a weekend...and the one person who deserved to die still walks among us.

by Anonymousreply 2July 14, 2024 12:34 PM

She was a brave woman.

RIP

by Anonymousreply 3July 14, 2024 12:36 PM

It’s sad because she dealt with this for so long.

“She’s no longer suffering” doesn’t suffice because she wanted so badly to live.

by Anonymousreply 4July 14, 2024 12:37 PM

Oh that's really sad to hear. Vale.

by Anonymousreply 5July 14, 2024 12:38 PM

Isn’t this 4 people… Shelley, Dr Ruth, Richard, and now Shannan. I thought it was supposed to stop at 3?

by Anonymousreply 6July 14, 2024 12:40 PM

I came to understand and appreciate her differently after following her podcast. A sad loss.

by Anonymousreply 7July 14, 2024 12:40 PM

Poor thing, she was going through hell the last few years. Sad sad business, and so young too.

by Anonymousreply 8July 14, 2024 12:40 PM

I feel very sad to read this news.

by Anonymousreply 9July 14, 2024 12:42 PM

I give her credit. Sick as she was, she'd do cons with her co-stars and not complain one bit. Very outgoing to fans, too.

by Anonymousreply 10July 14, 2024 12:42 PM

R2, you are so fucking right.

by Anonymousreply 11July 14, 2024 12:42 PM

I hope they respect her long list of people NOT invited to the funeral.

by Anonymousreply 12July 14, 2024 12:43 PM

RIP.

by Anonymousreply 13July 14, 2024 12:44 PM

Exactly R2, Exactly. Poor Shannen Doherty, she really did fight the brave fight. Last November my wife(I’m a lez) and I saw her at Rhode Island Comic Con. Now I wish I’d gone up and said something to her, like, “I love your work.”. Something non-cancer related. There are a lot of Charmed fans that walk among us.

by Anonymousreply 14July 14, 2024 12:44 PM

R6 And if the shooter had been better at what he did, it would've been five, goddamnit.

by Anonymousreply 15July 14, 2024 12:45 PM

This has been the weekend from hell

by Anonymousreply 16July 14, 2024 12:45 PM

R16 It would've been the weekend from heaven had Trump turned his head just a little bit more to the right.

by Anonymousreply 17July 14, 2024 12:46 PM

[quote] I thought it was supposed to stop at 3?

The Fates are trying to make up for the one that could have been.

by Anonymousreply 18July 14, 2024 12:46 PM

r6 This is a new cycle.

by Anonymousreply 19July 14, 2024 12:47 PM

Ooooh, Bruce…. The man with the sickle be comin….

by Anonymousreply 20July 14, 2024 12:47 PM

I didn't realize she was so young. Very sad.

Didn't she have a lawsuit going against a health insurance carrier that refused or delayed coverage for her cancer? If it's still pending, I hope her estate sees it through to a good ending for Shannen's heirs.

by Anonymousreply 21July 14, 2024 12:47 PM

R6 don’t forget Dave Loggins. Never known so many celebrity deaths in so short a period. Rest in peace Shannen. You fought such a battle.

by Anonymousreply 22July 14, 2024 12:49 PM

I like the cut of your jib R17.

by Anonymousreply 23July 14, 2024 12:49 PM

R6, Dave Loggins also passed away. Does no one care about Dave Loggins??? Bastards.

by Anonymousreply 24July 14, 2024 12:54 PM

Shannon was a high riding bitch to the very end. A true DLer. RIP honey.

by Anonymousreply 25July 14, 2024 12:55 PM

She had a pair of major league yaboos.

by Anonymousreply 26July 14, 2024 12:56 PM

R24, R22 cares.

by Anonymousreply 27July 14, 2024 12:56 PM

R12 This will be interesting because you Alyssa Milano will say something nice on social media about her passing but you know she’s on that list!

by Anonymousreply 28July 14, 2024 12:59 PM

Tomorow Allyssa Milano announces the Charmed reboot with Shannen to be seen in editing scraps.

by Anonymousreply 29July 14, 2024 1:00 PM

So sad. RIP.

by Anonymousreply 30July 14, 2024 1:04 PM

Really sad news. She put up an admirable cancer fight for many years.

by Anonymousreply 31July 14, 2024 1:04 PM

Piper: What does Prue think about all this?

Phoebe: She just went to get a coffee. We'll tell her when she gets back.

by Anonymousreply 32July 14, 2024 1:06 PM

Dylan and Brenda together again.

by Anonymousreply 33July 14, 2024 1:09 PM

This is too much for me to take. I’ve grown up as a huge fan of hers, all the way back to Our House and Girls Just Want to Have Fun. I know, MARY!

by Anonymousreply 34July 14, 2024 1:09 PM

When will the tears stop?!

by Anonymousreply 35July 14, 2024 1:10 PM

What a long, painful slog she's had for many, many years. I remember her all the way back to Our House. She worked her ass off.

by Anonymousreply 36July 14, 2024 1:11 PM

Alyssa is finally going to get what she has coming to her because those Charmed girls stood by Shannen until the end. They all stuck together except Alyssa and I hope she finally feels like the asshole she is today. She probably won’t.

by Anonymousreply 37July 14, 2024 1:13 PM

Cory, Naya, Mark, now Shannen. What a cursed cast!

by Anonymousreply 38July 14, 2024 1:14 PM

Alyssa can fuck all the way off and write a letter to Daddy.

by Anonymousreply 39July 14, 2024 1:14 PM

Joe Bonsall of the Oak Ridge Boys also died this week (7/9/2024). This continues to be a miserable summer.

by Anonymousreply 40July 14, 2024 1:19 PM

I’m not even sure why this is what pops into my mind, but I was thinking about her appearing on Riverdale in their episode memorializing Luke Perry. It was pretty clear that was Shannen mourning her friend.

This was a rough weekend for Gen X.

by Anonymousreply 41July 14, 2024 1:20 PM

[quote]don’t forget Dave Loggins. Never known so many celebrity deaths in so short a period.

Are you forgetting the summer of 2009 ?

by Anonymousreply 42July 14, 2024 1:20 PM

I really liked listening to her podcast. She turned out to be far more insightful and balanced than I’d expected, and I admire her for her how hard she fought.

She knew she wasn’t long for the world, but she made the most of the time she had.

by Anonymousreply 43July 14, 2024 1:20 PM

Shad.

No, Not poor Szhannon.

I want shad for lunch!

She'd want you to have it.

by Anonymousreply 53July 14, 2024 1:54 PM

R22. How soon we forget 2016, when EVERYBODY died.

by Anonymousreply 54July 14, 2024 1:55 PM

It always happens in threes.

Dr. Ruth, Richard Simmons....and well, the third was supposed to be Donald Trump but we saw how that went...

by Anonymousreply 55July 14, 2024 1:55 PM

IMdb hasn't updated their news yet on Doherty. Maybe she's still alive ?

by Anonymousreply 56July 14, 2024 1:56 PM

2 out of the three heathers have died.

by Anonymousreply 57July 14, 2024 1:58 PM

I was literally thinking about her last night. It's hard being psychic... although she did announce a few months ago that her end was near.

by Anonymousreply 58July 14, 2024 2:01 PM

Sad for Shannen, but one less Republican voter is a good thing

by Anonymousreply 59July 14, 2024 2:03 PM

I don't even want to look, but I was just listening to her most recent podcast in late June/early July! And she sounded fine- and was talking about her divorce and general life stuff... I have no idea how in advanced this was. recorded, but to me, I think her passing was VERY fast, and for that I am grateful. Her ex sounded like a real prick. She really set a good example with how she dealt with this disease.

by Anonymousreply 66July 14, 2024 2:30 PM

Her positivity towards the end was inspiring. I really thought she have several years still left in her. Sorry it's not meant to be. RIP.

by Anonymousreply 67July 14, 2024 2:32 PM

R67- I did too.. It sounded like she had the Elizabeth Edwards/Olivia Newton John type Stage 4, where they could control it for awhile.. But once it spread to the brain I guess that really is it (and what I am assuming) killed her so quickly.

R28 r69 ok? Whether they liked each other or not is irrelevant. Most SANE normal people do not wish cancer, pain and suffering and then death on someone simply because they don’t get along. Alyssa and Shannen didn’t get along but that doesn’t mean they wished bad upon the other either. That’s being a sane adult. Only psychos wish suffering and death on someone simply because they don’t like working with one another.

by Anonymousreply 70July 14, 2024 2:41 PM

R59 see a psychiatrist. ASAP.

by Anonymousreply 73July 14, 2024 2:45 PM

Decent statement from Alyssa.

I'm listening to Shannen's podcast. Seems like she went out on her own terms, which is good.

I hope she wasn't in pain.

by Anonymousreply 74July 14, 2024 2:46 PM

R49. I am not sure Benji should count since he died a month ago.

by Anonymousreply 75July 14, 2024 2:58 PM

R69 That's a tough line for Alyssa to walk.

The "complicated relationship" description is better, I guess, than "we hated each others' fucking guts."

I'm glad she made a statement. Had she not, she'd have been mercilessly eviscerated. This way, she'll only be mildly eviscerated.

by Anonymousreply 76July 14, 2024 3:04 PM

I had no idea Joe Bonsall died. My mother loved the Oaks. I asked her one time if the fact that Joe looked like her last boyfriend was why she liked him the most, she responded, "I think so."

by Anonymousreply 77July 14, 2024 3:04 PM

Shannon recorded last podcast maybe a week ago. I went over and listened...

My guess is that she had a brain bleed or something. There is no doubt this was incredibly fast. Bad on one hand, but incredibly fortunate on the other.

I think this is someone who went out on top! Would Shannon probably have liked a few days to get final affairs in order? Based on her personality? Probably. But I think once we get where we are ultimately going, those little things mean nothing in retrospect.

You did some good Shannon- and actually went from someone who was known (as a young adult) for not setting a great example-- to someone who ultimately set a great example, when it mattered the most. It's kind of a cool legacy and life. Respect.

by Anonymousreply 78July 14, 2024 3:07 PM

R78 Great post!

by Anonymousreply 79July 14, 2024 3:10 PM

It’s a good thing she chose who not to invite ahead of time.

by Anonymousreply 80July 14, 2024 3:13 PM

She had a harshness to her energy that had me misreading her for a long time, but the cancer seemed to both mellow her out and show another side of her. Her last decade was as redemptive as it was revelation. What a ride.

by Anonymousreply 81July 14, 2024 3:14 PM

I think sometimes people who you least expect can grow up, mature, grow, and change- and ultimately reveal themselves to be a great human being. i suspect most of Shannon's affairs were in order. I pray that her ex does not benefit from this.

Its sad to see people you grew up watching/knowing die so young.

R81- Agree!!!

by Anonymousreply 82July 14, 2024 3:15 PM

[quote] The Republican Party of today is not the Republican Party of 1992 [R87], so stop with the nonsensical speculation

While I disagree with the posters bringing up Shannen being a Republican, this is a flat-out LIE. The Republican Party has been batshit crazy since the days of Richard Nixon. In 91, Bush Sr. nominated the most corrupt Supreme Court Justice ever to serve, Clarence Thomas, who is currently working hard to turn this country into a Christofascist nation. Let's not even get started on Newt Gingrich becoming speaker of the House in the mid-90s. The only difference between the 90s and today is fewer dog whistles and more in-your-face bigotry. The policies are still oppressive.

The Republican Party of today is what Gingrich, Thomas, Bush Sr., George W. Bush, Reagan, Nixon, Limbaugh, and others built.

by Anonymousreply 110July 14, 2024 5:56 PM

R110 both sides are batshit for their own unique reasons. Let’s stop pointing the finger.

One wants to take away gay rights while the other wants to allow children as young as 2 and 3 to transition. Both are awful.

by Anonymousreply 111July 14, 2024 5:57 PM

R105--Donald Sutherland was with OJ Simpson and my neighbor down the street.

by Anonymousreply 112July 14, 2024 6:01 PM

Can we have her stuff?

by Anonymousreply 113July 14, 2024 6:05 PM

Nixon founded the EPA, opened China and signed Nuclear Arms Reduction treaties. If thats batshit crazy then most of us are crazy.

There is no way on earth that you can “both sides” the Democrats vs. the Republicans. One party wants to save democracy and the other wants to obliterate it - the end.

Anyway, getting back to the topic at hand, I will miss Shannen. Longtime fan here.

by Anonymousreply 124July 14, 2024 9:42 PM

Awwwww, that's a bummer that Marsha Warfield and Richard Moll weren't friends.

She lived. She took up space. She was present.

by Anonymousreply 126July 14, 2024 9:50 PM

Sad. We're the same age and I literally grew up wit her. I first became a genuine fan when she did a 2 parter on Father Murphy. She was fantastic as an orphan Boy, raised by a prickly old cowboy, with a big heart..and then it turned out she was a Girl. Then she was Jenny Wilder on Little House...then Our House, then Heather's and of course 90210 and Charmed. She definitely had 'it'... but as someone who believes death brings a new adventure and knows this world can be crap, I think she may be better off and out of pain... and I hope Michael Landon was waiting to say hello. RIP sweetheart.

Susan Dey cannot keep up with all that's happening.

by Anonymousreply 130July 14, 2024 10:43 PM

I watched 90210 from beginning to end for ten years straight. I'm honestly devastated. To lose thee Brenda Walsh, thee Prue Halliwell and of course who could forget little Jenny Wilder from Little House On The Prarie. For my generation who grew up watching her, she's invaluable. For some reason, the death of a beloved TV icon like this is more jarring for me than the deaths of my favorite movie stars. I think it's because with TV you're watching these characters evolve week after week, year after, and you definitely become invested in the various storylines. I continued watching 90210 after Shannen left, but it was never really the same, and I cut off Charmed completely when Aaron Spelling screwed her over for the second time. Her acrimonious exit from Charmed left a particularly bad taste in my mouth, and I vowed never to watch another Spelling series again. No matter how many times he tried, you just can't replace someone like Shannen. So much of her life was a battle, but I hope she's resting easy now. She earned it.

by Anonymousreply 131July 14, 2024 10:45 PM

She kicked ass on 90210. The Brenda years were by far and away the best, and the show went into sleazy, soap opera shit once she was gone.

by Anonymousreply 144July 14, 2024 11:32 PM

I find myself surprised, and somewhat embarrassed to be legitimately saddened by this. The only celebrity deaths that have ever hit me hard were Leonard Nimoy and Nichelle Nichols, just because Star Trek was and is so important to me.

But yeah, I've been bummed out all day since reading the news. Maybe it's because 90210 hit at the right age for me, or maybe because Shannen wasn't that much older than me.

I know, I know: MARY!

Was always #TeamBrenda in part because I was #Team Shannon....much like the actor I found her character ballsier and gutsier than the others on BH 90210. I love that Shannon being fired just reflected better on her character and showed that unlike the others she was suited for bigger, better things than hanging around beaches with her same boring friends from high school.

She was also very beautiful, breathtakingly so at times. God speed hun and say hi to your fake high school sweetheart for us, and that we miss him too.

by Anonymousreply 148July 14, 2024 11:36 PM

You lie R111. The Biden camp came against young trans transitions.

Doherty was a Reagan republican who said he was doing "a marvelous job" several times when so many was dying of AIDS including those in her precious entertainment industry.

It seems like most of you care more for a callous right-wing bitch than those who had a surprise disease crash into their lives & couldn't access their partner's health insurance or get tax cuts heteros got or even the basic decency of visiting their loved one in the hospital because the laws gave them no recognition.

Shannon probably had to pay off some of those bar fights victims of hers that kept popping up in the news/tabloids which left her on Obamacare.

by Anonymousreply 149July 14, 2024 11:38 PM

She was definitely a broad. And I mean that in a good way. Tough, smart, witty, and pretty.

I never watched 90210, but I appreciated that she clearly had a true sense of herself and stood up for what she believed in.

I hope you're at peace now and glad you no longer have to struggle against that unfair monster named cancer.

Let's be real. She was a lousy actress and no beauty. When someone gets fired from not one but TWO shows she is the problem. It wasn't like her constant lateness revealed a genius talent when she finally turned up on set. She was just spoiled and didn't appreciate the breaks she was given. It's understandable to clash with other personalities but she was supposed to be an actress so she should have acted civil. But as a person, to die at 53 is sad.

Like other posters, her death has affected me more than I thought it would. She was just a handful of years older than me and I grew up with her. If you were a teenager in the early 90s, 90210 was a HUGE cultural moment for you.

by Anonymousreply 181July 15, 2024 7:44 PM

I only knew her as Heather Duke, but as Heathers is one of my top ten guilty pleasure films that was more than enough.

She was odd - she looked exquisitely lovely in profile and insectile head-on. I never knew if she was acting or just being herself with zero fucks to give. But there was no one quite like her before or since. And now there's literally no one like her.

by Anonymousreply 182July 15, 2024 7:52 PM

God damn you Deidre. Put out a statement. Shannen played your daughter for chrissake!

by Anonymousreply 195July 16, 2024 9:24 AM

Tori was a fan of Shannen in Heathers, which may have been part of the reason why Aaron Spelling hired her for the role of Brenda. When she was on Shannen's podcast last month, they talked about their party days and how Shannen would often stick up for Tori on the show.

by Anonymousreply 196July 16, 2024 9:32 AM

[quote]She was definitely a broad. And I mean that in a good way.

I did a search and couldn't find the thread, but many years ago on DL, there was a poster here who shared an anecdote about a time Shannen and her then-bf stayed at a hotel or resort. I don't remember the exact names or dates the DLer gave; I think it may have been the late 90's or early 00's.

Anyway: Shannen and her bf got into an incredibly noisy, heated argument. Once the screaming subsided, it was followed moments later by a loud crashing/shattering sound.

The DLer explained that Shannen had gone to the gift shop, requested the most expensive item they sold—which happened to be a glass or crystal dolphin figurine—then purposely smashed it to get back at the bf.

Lol, I still remember it all these years later.

True or not, a "broad" indeed.

Sarah Michelle Gellar has kind of an Owen Wilson nose. Or at least she did before; I can't tell from the more recent pics on her Instagram thread if she's had cosmetic surgery or is just working the angles.

by Anonymousreply 222July 17, 2024 2:23 AM

r222 she's totally had a nose job. In recent pics I've seen of her, she looks almost unrecognizable, and seeing these old photos confirms to me she finally got her proboscis shaved down. by Anonymousreply 227July 17, 2024 4:28 PM

Horribly sad news! Love her.

First heard of her around August/September of 2004 when I started watching re-runs of BH90210 (although they were the 7th season episodes) and when the paparazzis of E! Kept showing an old video of her (1994) beating a guy during one of her messy night outs.

First saw her in Charmed in late 2005 and that quickly became my favorite tv show. She was certainly my favorite actress in 2006/2007/2008, watched many of her movies back then.

I also remember watching a few episodes of her reality show in 2012, Never imagined that she would die young, it sucks that she did.

First read about her cancer just days after an uncle of mine died of a heart attack in August of 2015, can't believe how fast nine years go.

But I am glad she lasted this long, I certainly remember all the negative trolls on YouTube and here claiming that she would die very soon back in 2016.

A lot of people who were supposedly going to die after her just died first in the meantime, I am glad Shannen proved her strength by fighting this hard to live and that she had the time to start her podcast and to tell us fans the real reason why she left charmed.

She will always be one the best tv actresses, and a true Icon of the 1990s, also one the prettiest celebrity faces of all time. Shannen will be eternal. And even though she was a republicunt I will always be a fan and have a little spot for her in my heart.

Ps : Loved listening to the Tori Spelling episode of her podcast, Tori took the opportunity to be shady towards CANDY 😂😂

Dee Dee Hall's statement will be in next week's Soap Opera Digest.

by Anonymousreply 251July 18, 2024 8:11 PM

BREAKING: Deidre Hall has released a statement:

“I believe that celebrity deaths are not a forum for expressing personal religious, social or political views. However, I have not objected when fellow performers have released condolence statements to express their support for a deceased costar; that's their choice. My choice is NOT to release a statement.

Soap Opera Digest readers should know releasing a statement is no longer entirely voluntary. Those who began by requesting statements from performers now resort to extreme tactics in pursuit of their express goal of 100 percent conformity. When performers arrive at an award show, individuals who attempt to solicit statements accost them. A performer who declines may be accosted at the pre-show reception, again while waiting backstage and again at the press conference after the show.

Requesting these statements from celebrities was, in my view, a benign and pro-social act. On the other hand, aggressively badgering performers to compel the release of statements is not only demeaning to the deceased celebrity and to the desperate need for an all-out research war against the cause of death, but an offense against personal freedom.

By attempting to force 100 percent conformity, these activists are now attempting to make the condolence statement a visible litmus test for separating those individuals who empathize with deceased celebrities and support celebrity memorials from those who do not. This is a misguided and dangerous notion.

First, it misguidedly politicizes human tragedy. These condolence statements provide a means by which public figures can appear to make a 'politically correct' statement in favor of a cause they do not support. A prime example was Barbara Bush publishing a condolence statement while seated among the audience at the Republican National Convention but deleting it before joining the president on the podium.

Second, any attempt to force conformity to a single social agenda attacks the freedom of expression. The extreme activities that resort to harassment to compel actors and actresses to release these statements are practicing a '90s brand of McCarthyism – and their behavior is deplorable. Our community was devastated by political extremists in the 1950s and again became a target during the last presidential campaign. It surpasses belief that men and women in the entertainment field would resort to shameful practices that the enemies of artistic freedom have used against us.

Sadly, it falls to some of us who ardently support deceased celebrities to resist these tactics by personal example. Believe me, the easy way out would be to post a condolence statement and keep silent. But I won't, because I don't want these appalling tactics to succeed.”

by Anonymousreply 271July 19, 2024 5:55 AM

R271, Our House was a weekly series on NBC that ran from 1986-88 and starred Wilford Brimley, Deirdre Hall and Shannen as Dierdre's daughter. Gay actor Chad Allen also played one of Hall's children. This was Hall's big shot at primetime after becoming a huge star on Days. Hall has said and I, for one, agree, that part of the problem was that nobody believed that she was old enough to be a mother of a teenage girl (Shannen), though Hall takes full responsibility for this as she admits she added ten years to her age when she was a teenager because she was too mature looking to be cast as adolescents, but ironically looked too young a decade later to play a widow and mother of three on Our House.

R269 I was young in the 80s. I've never been a soap fan. I watched the nighttime ones occasionally because those were some of the most popular shows on prime time network TV and they were almost unavoidable, But they were usually stupid. Daytime soaps--again in the '80s these were huge, as well, esp. General Hospital. Kids watched them at college. But I never was into soaps and like you I never knew any gay man who were into daytime soaps.

Deidre Hall was delusional if she thought she looked too young to be Shannen’s mother. Her old ass looked every bit of 45 on the show.

This has to be a fucking joke. Too young-looking to be a mother?? 😂

by Anonymousreply 279July 19, 2024 1:57 PM

She looked old enough to be the mother of a 25 year old, so in essence, she looked old enough to be a grandmother.

by Anonymousreply 280July 19, 2024 2:49 PM

I’m still not wearing a ribbon.

by Anonymousreply 281July 19, 2024 3:14 PM

R220, I have a new respect for her.

by Anonymousreply 282July 19, 2024 4:26 PM

Deirdre Hall was years older than Shannen Doherty. She was absolutely old enough to be her mother.

I'm an 80s child and I don't remember Our House at all. Weird, because I watched a lot of tv back then.

by Anonymousreply 283July 19, 2024 6:22 PM

Whoops, I meant to write that Deidre Hall was 24 years older than Shannen Doherty. She was totally old enough to be her mother, delusional old bitch.

Kind of like Nicole Kidman, who's almost 60 and still playing the mother of children who are in elementary school.

by Anonymousreply 284July 19, 2024 6:23 PM

Having recently reached voting age, Dee has vowed not to let Shannen's passing dim her excitement about the upcoming election.

by Anonymousreply 285July 19, 2024 6:28 PM

Considering how damned matronly Dee Dee was on Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, which was a decade before Our House, it’s a damned laugh that she thought she looked too young to be Shannen’s mother.

by Anonymousreply 286July 19, 2024 6:34 PM

It is, indeed, a laugh R286 .

by Anonymousreply 288July 19, 2024 6:41 PM

I just remember her Days character being killed off, then after what seemed a long while, came back to the show in a storyline that seemed ridiculous, even for a daytime soap. A lot of other Days actors whose characters were also killed off were brought back in the most unbelievable plots.

Was Marlena killed off so Dee could have a crack at prime time with Our House?

by Anonymousreply 289July 20, 2024 9:39 AM

I believe that when Dee came in for the audition for Our House, she was under the impression she was reading for Shannen's part...

by Anonymousreply 290July 20, 2024 9:48 AM

[quote]Was Marlena killed off so Dee could have a crack at prime time with Our House?

There was a period from about the mid-80s to the early-90s where a bunch of former daytime leading ladies made attempts at stardom on primetime soaps. Sometimes this worked out (Falcon Crest); most of the time it didn't--Genie Francis on Bare Essence, Marcy Walker on Palace Guard, and even Susan Lucci had a maligned, barely remembered season on Dallas.

Our House got two full seasons, so Dee Dee landed somewhere in the middle.

[quote] Was Marlena killed off so Dee could have a crack at prime time with Our House?

R289: Not right away. Dee worked on both shows during the first season of Our House (filming Days on weekends), although obviously Marlena appeared a lot less frequently than usual. (IIRC, Marlena had been kidnapped/held captive during the latter portion, before being "killed off"). NBC & Dee were hedging their bets to see if Our House was really going to make it. I remember it was pretty noteworthy at the time -- to have one of daytime's biggest stars starring in a primetime show, simultaneously. No one had ever done that.

But it (her schedule) couldn't be sustained, so she left Days and Marlena was "killed" in a sea-plane crash -- or that's what everyone in Salem thought, as her body was never recovered. Easier to come back from than a decapitation.

by Anonymousreply 295July 20, 2024 10:29 PM

Who are these gay guys on DL who have been watching soaps for decades? I've never known a gay man who watches soaps, ever.

Which time?

by Anonymousreply 298July 20, 2024 11:08 PM

R296, I was at school then. Most kids had an idea of what was going on with Days and Y&R and would make jokes about the plotlines. Australia didn't have cable TV back then, just five free to air networks. Years after, a primetime news/comedy show aired a very entertaining Days update featuring Marlena possessed by the devil. It was very funny.

by Anonymousreply 299July 20, 2024 11:20 PM

Dee steals the thread by not making a statement.

Queen of the Night, indeed.

by Anonymousreply 300July 20, 2024 11:33 PM

Funny to think of how huge 90210 was in the early 90s. A show could never be that big anymore among teens. There are just too many options these days.

by Anonymousreply 301July 20, 2024 11:38 PM

Her divorce was finalized hours before she died. Not sure when they started the process, but to be going through that while she was already sick must have been incredibly stressful.

Dee has always done things her way not the way of mainstream...it's the artist in her, she was probably been born at a different time back in Paris in the 1880s where she could have acted, painted and drank ouzo with Hemingway!

Oh, dear.....delusions of grandeur, R309. I love Dorothy Lyman, but didn't she film like a half-dozen episodes of AMC while the fourth-billed on Mama's Family?

by Anonymousreply 310July 24, 2024 8:57 AM

R144 HMC has been going THRU IT.

Her IG had the most lovely tributes under her stories but they only lasted 24 hours. I also listened to her podcast and knew this was coming--as did she--when her cancer came back at stage IV, but I was shocked that it was so sudden. And I cried during Holly's, Drew Fuller's, and Brian Krause's podcast episode after she died. It was so touching.

It's weird...I NEVER thought I would cry at a celebrity's death when I was younger. It all started with Joan Rivers and it was downhill from there. Shit, I even cried when Howard Stern announced Ralph Cirella had passed.

by Anonymousreply 311July 24, 2024 11:09 AM

Also, I remember the Rolling Stone with Shannen on the cover. During the interview, she was smoking and said to the reporter that breast cancer runs in her family and she knows that she should quit. This was in '93 or '94, and that ALWAYS stuck with me. I think it was because I became a regular smoker around that time despite being old enough to know better. But I feel like MANY people smoked back then because--believe it or not--it looked cool at clubs and bars.

by Anonymousreply 312July 24, 2024 11:24 AM

There was a lot of smoking going on in the 90s.

by Anonymousreply 313July 24, 2024 2:32 PM

The '90s were the last time smoking was culturally cool for young peoplle. All the supermodels (who were as big as movie stars back then), save Cindy C (who was considered commercial and not cool), Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, Johnny Depp all smoked. I believe that many of the Friends' actors smoked in real life, or at least Aniston did. But at the time you could still smoke in cafes and bars. At some point in the early 2000s, smoking was banned in most indoor spaces throughout the U.S. I smoked throughout the '90s which coincided with most of my 20s and then quit in 2004 which happened to be the year I turned 30.

by Anonymousreply 314July 24, 2024 3:06 PM

In the 90s you saw celebrities smoking in pap shots all the time. On the rare occasions that happens today people have a fit.

by Anonymousreply 319July 25, 2024 2:18 AM

r319 I thought the same. She was terminal, why couldn't he have kept his dick in his pants until she was gone? It was such a shitty thing to do, going through a divorce in such terrible circumstances.

by Anonymousreply 320July 25, 2024 3:18 AM

Interesting R319, I thought she was the one who made the money.

by Anonymousreply 321July 25, 2024 3:23 AM

R321 What does the post have to do with money?

by Anonymousreply 323July 25, 2024 12:54 PM

by Anonymousreply 324July 25, 2024 2:33 PM

Deidre Hall has an identical twin sister.Whats her name and what is she doing these days?

by Anonymousreply 325July 25, 2024 2:35 PM

Dee's twin, Hattie Adams, is currently incarcerated.

by Anonymousreply 326July 25, 2024 3:26 PM

I feel bad for Dee's twin having to say she was ten years older in order to keep Dee's lie going so she could get work in Hollywood. Now everyone thinks both are ten years older than they actually are. I don't think Dee was legal on Electra Woman and Dyna Girl...

by Anonymousreply 327July 25, 2024 3:41 PM

Can someone with a legal background explain the financial reasoning behind her divorce? Articles state she wanted alimony from her husband since she was drowning in medical bills as her SAG insurance was expiring. Firstly, why was her SAG insurance expiring? Is SAG insurance any good? Secondly, if she ultimately signed a divorce agreement that would not include alimony doesn’t that actually help her ex husband out financially? Now he won’t be responsible for any of her outstanding medical bills and other debts. I read her royalties were drying up from various tv series so future earnings would be meager or non existent. He had nothing to lose financially except her debt. Will her Malibu home have to be sold to pay off debt?

She worked her entire life, since childhood. What was her financial situation?

by Anonymousreply 334August 5, 2024 7:42 AM

Maybe the SAG insurance was experiring because she hand't been working in awhile.

Some years back, Tracy Nelson lost her SAG insurance because she took time off to raise a family and when she got cancer she had trouble paying her medical bills because SAG insurance lapsed.
