Richard Simmons is Dead to Me

Of course, TMZ has the scoop. Link to follow.

He was 76. Link is below.

But I digress. Rest in Peace, Richard.

by Anonymousreply 3July 13, 2024 8:32 PM

I thought he’d live longer being a fitness guru and all that. Genetics is the ultimate decider in many cases.

He was a bright light who helped many.

RIP💪🏼

R3, because when you click on the alert, an article appears but there is no link to it (none that I can find, anyway). Once it’s posted in the TMZ news feed, I can click on the article and get the link. Maybe they post simultaneously in their feed now, I didn’t check.

by Anonymousreply 12July 13, 2024 8:42 PM

What a classy bitch.

Charmed the hell out of Howard Stern.

Was always to-the-hilt on David Letterman.

Retreated into privacy for his final years — even as a really fun and interesting podcast tried to lure him back into the spotlight.

And his final tweet is as sweet as Sinatra.

Loved that Fellini gave him his first break.

CLOT SHOT!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 31July 13, 2024 9:23 PM

I remember the first time I saw Richard on TV. I was maybe 6 or 7 years old, and he was on CHiPs. I was immediately drawn to him because I knew he wasn't "normal" and I knew I wasn't either.

I got to meet him in the late '90s. He was so nice, engaging, funny as hell, and just magnetic.

I always felt bad for him when he went on David Letterman's show(s) and Dave would always bring out a fire extinguisher and spray Richard with it. Just seemed so demeaning and humiliating towards Richard. I hope he's in peace, wherever he may be.

by Anonymousreply 32July 13, 2024 9:27 PM

David Letterman could be a cunt.

by Anonymousreply 33July 13, 2024 9:36 PM

So he twitted something only a few hours ago? And yesterday was his birthdate? It does make you wonder if they're all just coincidences.

by Anonymousreply 34July 13, 2024 9:36 PM

I thought he had already died.

by Anonymousreply 35July 13, 2024 9:37 PM

He was such a weird 80s figure.

A flaming closeted queen who got tons of female fatties to move their asses just a bit and America loved him.

by Anonymousreply 36July 13, 2024 9:42 PM

This is all getting to be too much for this old White woman. If Liza or Barbra go this weekend, I go!!!

by Anonymousreply 37July 13, 2024 9:44 PM

Aww, RIP. His recent years have been nothing short of a mystery. And thus the mystery ends. He was a New Orleans legend as much as he was a legend in Los Angeles.

I followed him on social media and he made a resurgence not that long ago. He just posted the other day about being excited to get to tell his life story. I saw his last post, too, and it was posted only 6 hours ago - has he just died in the last 6 hours?

by Anonymousreply 42July 13, 2024 9:51 PM

This is so sad. He was largely before my time, but he was DIFFERENT in a good way. And I feel like we don't have much of that now. We have people who claim to be different, but really are just conforming to their peers. He was a weird, bright light. RIP, dude. You made people happy.

by Anonymousreply 55July 13, 2024 10:16 PM

R4 I always think about how the ultimate fitness guru Jack LaLanne died at age 96, and Ernest Borgnine, who probably never did a sit-up in his life, died at 95.

LaLanne only got one more year than Ernest out of all those jumping jacks.

by Anonymousreply 56July 13, 2024 10:17 PM

I hope he wasn't trying to sweat to the oldies, because it's been very hot in Los Angeles and the heat is affecting the elderly.

by Anonymousreply 57July 13, 2024 10:18 PM

R53, Sez you. Ask any of us if we'd like to be 20 again, but in today's world.

Nope. Yes, I hope to live as long as my mother did, to 91, but at 74 I find myself quoting John Mellencamp often:

Oh yeah, life goes on.

Long after the thrill

Of living is gone.

by Anonymousreply 58July 13, 2024 10:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 69July 13, 2024 10:35 PM

When I was growing up in the 80s Richard Simmons was one of the very, very few gay men you saw in the media back then and I was horrified. I knew I was gay very early on and I thought "this is what I have to look forward to?" I thought gay men were all screaming queen stereotypes and it was so awful to me.

by Anonymousreply 74July 13, 2024 11:00 PM

And r73 it affected a lot of straight people too, who only saw gay men in the media as cartoon stereotypes and it reinforced their homophobia and mean spiritedness toward gay men in general. It was an awful time.
