I was initially bummed out when he replaced Barry Keoghan — who I had just seen and loved in The Banshees of Inisherin.

But Keoghan is so overexposed now, I’m looking forward to seeing Fred’s performance. He was solid in White Lotus.

No offence to that poster, but it's clear as day from the trailer that Denzel isn't playing the emperor. He would be up there with his sons watching the games if that were the case. And that's just for starters, he definitely wouldn't be speaking to a gladiator the way we see him interacting with Mescal.

My apologies for the error--I misrread what had been posted on another thread, and thought someone claimed Washington was playing Septimius Severus. But I was wrong.

He was just in the June Squibb movie Thelma, playing her grandson. Much like The White Lotus, he has a role that could be really annoying but he makes it work anyway.

He's named after his grandfather who was a longtime editor at The New York Times.

I worked with his mother at one time and she was always pleasant and completely professional. I’m guessing he has his head screwed on straight going by what his mom was like.

Crazy Roman emperors always worked well for actor. Peter Ustinov won an Oscar as Nero, Jay Robinson won accolades as Caligula and then there are all those others including Joaquin in Gladiator.

I didn't think I could like Fred Hechinger anymore after White Lotus but seeing him in the June Squibb movie Thelma, I really fell head over heels in love. I can't imagine anyone not adoring that performance. The movie isn't great, but June and Fred make for a spectacular duo.

He's not a leading man type but he's a wonderful young character actor with a great future. And his quirky sex appeal may not be evident in photos but certainly is on film.
