I was watching The Pit and the Pendulum on TCM last night—Roger Corman's loose adaption of the Poe short story. Vincent Price displayed his over-the-top style of horror acting that was entertaining to me., though I never found Vincent Price "scary"in his horror-themed movie roles. Do any of your ancient queens have any Vincent Price tales to tell?
I like the old Corman movies because even though he's hamming it up (watch Tower of London to see his Richard III - it's an absolute hoot!), he's still doing the work whereas in later years he's clearly just showing up & doing his Vincent Price thing. I watched Price in an old/pre-horror movie & I can see why he went the horror route: he's a fine actor, but not really leading man material. Being cast as a devious weirdo was the perfect role for him, though I've read multiple things about what a lovely man he was in real life who cared about the arts.

Growing up I just assumed Price was a British actor when it turns out he was born in St Louis, Missouri.

That's the mid-Atlantic accent coming through. He seemed not take himself too seriously, and his lesbian daughter insists he was largely straight with a few gay dalliances when he was younger. I think he was an effete bisexual who could go either way, and took the easier path.

Vincent Price IS Vincent Price in Theater of Blood. This movie is such a hoot.

Price convinced Sears to have an Art department, which managed to exist for a number of years.

And it was high quality, R5! I have one of the Piranesi prints he bought for them in Rome.

Supposedly said the best sex he ever had was with Errol Flynn adding he was hung like a horse.

Shade most delicious:
"I did a show one time with Vincent Price, who was one of the sweetest, gentlest men you could ever hope to meet. Over lunch, someone remarked how the actors who played the worst villains were always like that in real life and Mr. Price remarked, "Yes, it amuses me how many people thought I was like the monster in the Edgar Allan Poe movies and thought Danny Kaye was a nice man."

He made a very convincing gay hair colorist.

He scared the shit out of me when he had Greg and Peter trapped in the cave on the Brady Bunch Hawaii episode.

To me he’ll always be Edward Scissorhands' mad scientist father.

Putting Price in that movie is one of the most endearing things that Tim Burton ever did. I watch it every Christmas because it warms my freaky little heart so much.

Vincent was a regular during the early years of the long-running game show Pantomime Quiz. It's fun to see him more relaxed and zany before his ooky-spooky master thespian persona was cemented.
