John Corbett- “Being an Actor in Hollywood has been Unfulfilling!”

“Look, I’m in the fourth quarter of the football game now, in life and in showbiz. It’s just a fact,” Corbett said. “So I can reveal now I picked the fucking wrong thing to do with my life.”

“Have you ever sat in a fucking waiting room of a doctor’s office for like an hour and been like, ‘What the fuck?'” Corbett added about his career regret. “For me, that’s what making a movie is like, because I’m not part of any creative process.”

“I’ve made a lot of money. I live in a beautiful home. People come to me at every restaurant I go in. I’m a friend of the world,” Corbett said. “But as far as a fulfilling creative work life, I didn’t write one fucking line. I didn’t write one joke that made people laugh. So it’s been unfulfilling on that level.”

I heard he treats Bo Derek like shit

by Anonymousreply 1July 8, 2024 8:29 PM

^That's because I am UNFULFILLED as an actor!

by Anonymousreply 2July 8, 2024 8:30 PM

He looks great and that's the important thing

by Anonymousreply 3July 8, 2024 8:31 PM

Like he has the capacity or skills to do anything else.

by Anonymousreply 4July 8, 2024 8:31 PM

He could always try to write, produce or direct. He's not dead.

by Anonymousreply 5July 8, 2024 8:33 PM

I've seen your "acting" last season on AJLT. Yeah you did pick the wrong fucking thing to do with your life.

by Anonymousreply 6July 8, 2024 8:33 PM

Josh Taylor once said if you want to hear an actor complain? Give him a job!

by Anonymousreply 7July 8, 2024 8:36 PM

He is a very average white guy and should thank his lucky stars he was able to make a living from acting.

by Anonymousreply 8July 8, 2024 8:38 PM

Nothing is less becoming than whining to the public about being bored and unfulfilled when you're rich, famous, and privileged.

Save it for therapy.

by Anonymousreply 9July 8, 2024 8:40 PM

How big is his cock?

by Anonymousreply 10July 8, 2024 8:41 PM

I condole you

by Anonymousreply 11July 8, 2024 8:43 PM

Acting is the only job where people expect fulfillment. It's a job. That's why you get paid.

by Anonymousreply 12July 8, 2024 8:44 PM

R9: Another privileged person describing himself as an oppressed victim.

by Anonymousreply 13July 8, 2024 8:45 PM

He’s a repug. Fuck him.

by Anonymousreply 14July 8, 2024 8:47 PM

A shrink would have a field day with the football reference.

by Anonymousreply 15July 8, 2024 8:49 PM

Unless he has the talent to be a part of the creative process, which he doesn't, then why have regrets? His talent lies in acting, so he should be happy that he made the most of those talents and was successful in life. Frankly, he was successful with limited acting talent, so he was super lucky in life.

by Anonymousreply 16July 8, 2024 8:51 PM

by Anonymousreply 17July 8, 2024 8:52 PM

He should try to watch his fucking language.

by Anonymousreply 18July 8, 2024 8:54 PM

Major pussy hound. Big Trump supporter.

by Anonymousreply 19July 8, 2024 8:54 PM

He's handsome... Who is he?

by Anonymousreply 20July 8, 2024 8:55 PM

[quote]He’s a repug

With those woefully thin lips he couldn't be anything else.

by Anonymousreply 21July 8, 2024 8:55 PM

I’ve been filled many times.

by Anonymousreply 22July 8, 2024 8:55 PM

@r19, Oh, he's SJP's boyfriend from that show. Got it

by Anonymousreply 23July 8, 2024 8:56 PM

The odds of being a successful actor are roughly the same as winning the lottery. I guess literally everyone can find something to complain about.

by Anonymousreply 24July 8, 2024 8:56 PM

But nothing stopped John from creating, once he made some decent money.

I can relate, though. I was a high school English teacher, all filled with the h.s. Class of '67 optimism of that year's "Up The Down Staircase" and "To Sir, With Love."

Hated almost every day: Every assignment to grade; every 7:00 a.m. arrival; every need to "discipline"; every In-Service meeting; every extra duty and club; every wave of hatred and ennui wafting my way because it was "English"; every 20-minute "lunch" at 10:45 a.m.; every daily need to be "on."

At least Corbett can say he made some real money.

I guarantee you that today "Sir" would take that engineering job offer and RUN.

by Anonymousreply 25July 8, 2024 8:57 PM

He’s 6’5”. There’s that.

Did you retire from teaching, R29? If you did, shouldn't you have a fairly decent retirement?

A friend of mine retired a couple of years ago as principal of a public school in NJ. She gets about 6K a month in retirement.

by Anonymousreply 27July 8, 2024 9:03 PM

Doesn't 99% of the population feel like that? That's what hobbies and volunteer causes are for.

by Anonymousreply 28July 8, 2024 9:07 PM

r25 is like 80.

by Anonymousreply 29July 8, 2024 9:09 PM

All men lead lives of quiet desperation, OP.

by Anonymousreply 30July 8, 2024 9:13 PM

Corbett’s take is the take of most actors. You don’t hear about it that often because most actors never get to the point of celebrity where what they say is picked up by the media. It’s a very unfulfilling life, which is why so many turn to drugs and alcohol. Hollywood, the town, is a pretty depressing place. You’re completely isolated if you don’t know people beforehand.

by Anonymousreply 31July 8, 2024 9:14 PM

Poor diddums has a successful career that isn’t fulfilling but pays well and isn’t physically or mentally damaging, Being a handsome, white, straight middle aged male is not all fun and roses, it’s unfulfilling.

by Anonymousreply 32July 8, 2024 9:15 PM

Rich white people problems.

by Anonymousreply 33July 8, 2024 9:16 PM

R30

Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way.🎶

by Anonymousreply 34July 8, 2024 9:17 PM

Boo hoo hoo. Why doesn't he just admit he's a lazy stupid guy. he could have woken up in his 40s or 50s and got into production if he had any talent.

by Anonymousreply 35July 8, 2024 9:19 PM

You beat me to it Nopalmoil @ r34!

by Anonymousreply 36July 8, 2024 9:20 PM

[quote]All men lead lives of quiet desperation

Then why doesn't he keep quiet?

by Anonymousreply 37July 8, 2024 9:21 PM

R29, I will be 75 in November, to be exact. Your point?

R27, New Jersey, where I did apply for employment, paid MUCH more than my contiguous area of Pennsylvania. Fact: In 1967 Westfield, NJ, offered beginning teachers over $9,000/year (yes, salaries were paid on an annual rate); the district that hired me (my Alma Mater) paid $6,700.

I worked from 1967 to 2002. I married a fellow district teacher. Both of us Master's+. I now receive a portion of his pension as a survivor benefit and my full pension. Together the total is $5400. With Social Security I'm certainly not complaining.

Your friend is fibbing to you, I think. As a retired Administrator in NJ she probably gets at least $10K.

But the topic isn't about money. It's having the more suitable profession.

by Anonymousreply 38July 8, 2024 9:25 PM

Probably 90% of the world feels the same way. I know most of my lawyer colleagues do!

by Anonymousreply 39July 8, 2024 9:26 PM

must be nice to graduate college at 16.

by Anonymousreply 40July 8, 2024 9:59 PM

[quote]Corbett’s take is the take of most actors. You don’t hear about it that often because most actors never get to the point of celebrity where what they say is picked up by the media. It’s a very unfulfilling life, which is why so many turn to drugs and alcohol.

True. Acting for TV in particular might "seem" exciting to Midwestern frauen, but in reality it's a grind and actors usually spend the majority of their time farting around in their trailers waiting to be called for a scene. Any given scene might necessitate a half-dozen "setups," meaning they have to fully rearrange ALL of the lighting and cameras to shoot it from different angles as needed.

OTOH the same is true for porn, but I've seen few DLers who grasp that porn stars are almost always faking it. Filming porn sucks as well (and not in the cocksucking context). It can take most of a day to film a single scene, and while they obviously have far less sophisticated equipment and whatnot, the actors are expected to not only maintain a boner almost the entire time – particularly while topping (again, obviously) – but also do so in front of a decent-sized crew, and while fucking someone you might find repulsive. (Including instances with gay-for-pay models, but also models who simply aren't attracted to the types of men they're paired with.)

by Anonymousreply 41July 8, 2024 10:12 PM

Yes, it would have been, r40!

Meant to write 1971--2002. Well, I said English, not math! 😝

by Anonymousreply 42July 8, 2024 10:13 PM

Well, based on how fucking dumb he sounds, he wasn't going to be a doctor or novelist or lawyer or CPA.

He should be grateful not to be loading a dishwasher at the local pizzeria.

by Anonymousreply 43July 8, 2024 10:13 PM

[quote]I’ve made a lot of money. I live in a beautiful home ... But as far as a fulfilling creative work life, I didn’t write one fucking line.

I know it's "white boy summer," but does it have to be WHINY white boy summer? If rich-as-fuck John Corbett hasn't taken advantage of the MASSIVE amounts of privilege he's been granted in his FORTY YEARS as an actor, that's his own damn fault.

Wanna write ALL the fucking lines? How about making a self-funded indie flick FFS?

by Anonymousreply 44July 8, 2024 10:14 PM

You know what fulfillment I get from working? A paycheck.

by Anonymousreply 45July 8, 2024 10:16 PM

The idea is to take a challeging role rather than every iteration of MBFGW or SATC/AJLT

by Anonymousreply 46July 8, 2024 10:18 PM

Welcome to real life, fool.

by Anonymousreply 47July 8, 2024 10:19 PM

R45 won this

by Anonymousreply 48July 8, 2024 10:19 PM

He was cute in Northern Exposure.

by Anonymousreply 49July 9, 2024 4:42 AM

You'd think he would feel fulfilled with Bo Derek as his intellectual partner in life.

by Anonymousreply 50July 9, 2024 5:01 AM

So he wasn’t Orson Welles. We already knew that, John.

by Anonymousreply 51July 9, 2024 5:56 AM

I understand him. People make a big deal about doing something fulfilling with their life. But very few of us get the chance to do anything that isn’t pure boredom and tedium. It’s depressing and I think we should talk about it more.

by Anonymousreply 52July 9, 2024 6:13 AM

He could have challenged himself as an actor and he's not owning that he played the same niceguy over and oveer.

by Anonymousreply 53July 9, 2024 6:55 AM

Most people work like dogs in jobs they hate to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. He is so disconnected from reality. He should just graciously accept that he is very fortunate, instead of being a whiny bitch.

by Anonymousreply 54July 9, 2024 8:27 AM

[quote]I understand him. People make a big deal about doing something fulfilling with their life. But very few of us get the chance to do anything that isn’t pure boredom and tedium. It’s depressing and I think we should talk about it more.

Agreed, R52. Most people romanticize the importance and fulfilment of their jobs. It's self-delusion on a massive scale to think that the work most people do amounts to personal fulfilment and a sense of purpose: restockers of shelves, creators of actuarial reports, waiters, writers of box copy for packaging, front desk services, tourism information bureaus, event planners, lab techs, medical records administration, dubbing TV series in another language, tax registration, zoo keepers, space planning architects, landscape workers, historians, journalists, film editors, makers of everyday items featuring Frida Kahlo motifs, tour guides, driving instructors, police officers, teachers, dentists, art restorers, city planners, hospital administrators, HR vice presidents, CEOs, CFOs, VPs of Sales, stock brokers, accountants, project managers, writers of weekly and monthly reports on some process and its progress, administrators of pension plans, prison guards, factory machine repairers, assembly line workers, hotel chain branding execs, massage therapists, nail technicians, airline pilots, city council members....

You think they were all Chief Archaeologists making the major discoveries in Egypt in the 19th and 20th Centuries, the writers of books that shook peoples souls, the directors of films that changed the way we view the world. They are not. Most work, even most work for people with great job titles is by its nature mundane and repetitive, yet listen to Americans talking loudly and proudly about their job titles to strangers on an airplane: you would think that generating the weekly expense report summaries of the Sales Team were pivotal to the rotation of the earth, that if they were to take two consecutive weeks off the company would go straight down the shitter and the earth would stop spinning. It's just not true for any but a tiny percentage of workers, and even those may well look more exciting from a distance than from an inside view.

Finding pleasure in one's work and a measure of pride is great, but itś alarming how many people can talk up their work big time yet go all mousey if the subject turns to personal interests or what pleasure that find in life.

Yes, John Corbett sounds like an asshole for fucking saying how fucking uncreative his fucking career has fucking turned out to fucking be, but I'm fucking guessing that he's greatly fucking overestimated his fucking undeveloped potential for 'creative process.' He had one especially good role and a lot of mediocre acting and was rewarded well, married well, and granted a lot of reverence and deference along the way. If he said he regretted not trying to develop some more creative aspect of his work, fine, but he said as much in so irritable a fashion that he just sounds like a miserable old cunt.

I've known big CEOs and important scientists and renowned artists and historians and archaeologists and curators and inventors and creative people and accountants and many others across a huge range of jobs and those that were genuinely interesting people were interesting because they were filled with curiosity about many things, not just their profession of their day job. We put a huge emphasis on work as though it's the only thing that defines us, but it (hopefully) isn't.

by Anonymousreply 55July 9, 2024 10:24 AM

I don't know her.

by Anonymousreply 56July 9, 2024 10:32 AM

Not anymore R3.

by Anonymousreply 57July 9, 2024 10:44 AM

He’s of medium talent, face, and body and should be eternally grateful that he managed to succeed at all.

by Anonymousreply 58July 9, 2024 11:06 AM

I know someone who works in the industry and is well known as one of the few people in this country who can repeatedly work with Judy Davis, who is supposedly a nightmare on set - everybody is scared of her.

When Davis is having one of her daily tantrums about whatever, the person who I know says “Jude, it pays the bills and it’s just work - let it go”.

The first time that this happened, years ago, the rest of the crew flinched, expecting the worst, but Davis cackled, said “yeah, you’re right” and the crisis was averted,

by Anonymousreply 59July 9, 2024 11:07 AM

It all comes down to thin lips and a head shaped by inappropriate use of forceps upon birth.

by Anonymousreply 60July 9, 2024 11:10 AM

It sounds like he would feel more fulfilled creatively if he had evolved into writing and/or directing of the process as some actors of his mindset eventually did. Some actors feel accomplished creatively when they successfully bring the character that's on the page to life. He's not one of them.

by Anonymousreply 61July 9, 2024 11:11 AM

R31 is correct and I’ll add that many people who seek out careers in show business do it because they hope it can plug a hole that can never be filled

I remember the Sony hack emails about Ryan Murphy and Hannah Minghella was instructing Amy Pascal about how to give him constructive criticism for a screenplay he had written that wasn’t very good:

“Talk to him like you would talk to an actress.”

by Anonymousreply 62July 9, 2024 11:13 AM

Oh boo hoo John Corbett, having to sit around in a plush trailer waiting to be called to set to read someone else’s words and not feeling fulfilled. Lunch in the catering tent prepared by someone who can cook. Then at the end of the day getting picked up by a limo and driven home or to your hotel - all for a shitload of money. How absolutely ghastly!!

Try staring at a screen all day, counting down the hours to quitting time, dealing with nasty coworkers and a sociopathic boss, grabbing something for lunch then racing back to your grey cube before hustling home on public transport then backing up again for more of the same tomorrow. And tomorrow, and tomorrow.

Suck it up, precious.

by Anonymousreply 63July 9, 2024 11:15 AM

Boo hoo hoo.

by Anonymousreply 66July 9, 2024 11:18 AM

Nobody would miss you, John. You can move on and fulfill your dreams if you would like.

Really, John, nobody forces you to cash those checks.

by Anonymousreply 67July 9, 2024 11:33 AM

"You'll pardon me -- but to have no talent is not enough! What you need is an idea that makes your strip special."

by Anonymousreply 68July 9, 2024 11:35 AM

It also seems he would have better fulfillment being a live stage actor rather than a film actor.

by Anonymousreply 69July 9, 2024 12:01 PM

Oh, how awful that he got filthy rich and doesn't ever have to worry about he'll keep a roof over his head, food in his mouth, or how he'll pay his medical bills should he face a catastrophic illness, all for having a career where he sits around for hours doing nothing.

Boo hoo, Johnny.

by Anonymousreply 70July 9, 2024 12:04 PM

He never seemed heterosexual to me.

by Anonymousreply 71July 9, 2024 12:06 PM

He's a dull actor who's never stretched himself or gone out of his comfort zone. Just plays the same nice guy role over and over again. Try studying your craft or doing theatre somewhere. Challenge yourself or shut up and cash the AJLT checks.

by Anonymousreply 72July 9, 2024 3:17 PM

He's not describing himself as an oppressed victim, R13. Where does he say that? He's saying that HE made the wrong choices. DL today exists solely as a place for assholes to tear anyone and anything down. Someone in another thread asked what DL was like in the 90's. Well, it wasn't like this.

by Anonymousreply 73July 9, 2024 3:56 PM

You'd think it would be enough for any actor to get to tell me repeatedly how wonderful and beautiful I am!

by Anonymousreply 74July 9, 2024 3:57 PM

ALL 90S DL WAS NOTHING BUT RIPPING EVERYONE APART!

DEMENTIA MUCH?

by Anonymousreply 75July 9, 2024 3:58 PM

I’d eat his ass.

by Anonymousreply 76July 9, 2024 4:07 PM

I don’t get this “boo hoo, shut the fuck up”, misery loves company attitude. Personally, I find it refreshing and relatable to hear from John Corbett that a successful acting career isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. I think we need to be more honest about how difficult working life is for us all.

by Anonymousreply 77July 10, 2024 5:54 AM

Jesus. He could just be thankful as one of the tiny percentage of people who could parlay acting into a solid career, life, finances; shut the fuck up; and pursue whatever creative pursuits he wants right now.

by Anonymousreply 78July 10, 2024 6:15 AM

I guess what he was saying was that don't expect your career to plug up the parts in your life that you find missing. Even some of the big superstar actors just do projects because they get big bucks and builds up their public image. Few people are able to pick only the projects they love because they are financially set for life.

by Anonymousreply 79July 10, 2024 12:22 PM

If fame and fortune aren’t fulfilling enough, then your hole is too big.

by Anonymousreply 80July 10, 2024 12:32 PM

Narcissists never feel fulfilled because they have an unending need for new sources of validation and excitement. There's no possibility of appreciating or enjoying the things you have. No possibility of reflecting contently on your achievements. Just a huge anxiety about where the next hour of ego fantasy is going to come from.

by Anonymousreply 81July 10, 2024 12:37 PM

[quote]Some actors feel accomplished creatively when they successfully bring the character that's on the page to life. He's not one of them.

Maybe that’s because he’s only played one-dimensional characters, or perhaps it’s because he’s woefully limited as an actor and can bring only one dimension to a role.

by Anonymousreply 82July 10, 2024 12:51 PM

Purr, purr Francine.

by Anonymousreply 83July 10, 2024 1:02 PM

R77 Digging ditches for 12 hours a day is difficult working life. Sitting around on a movie set for 12 hours waiting for to shoot your scene isn't a difficult working life. Tedious, yes. Difficult, no.

Maybe John should've been reading books and enhancing his intellect during all those days where he sat around doing nothing.

by Anonymousreply 84July 10, 2024 1:10 PM

Most jobs are psychologically difficult R84. It’s hard to not own your own life.

by Anonymousreply 85July 10, 2024 1:17 PM

When I watched him as an unknown hair stylist snogging his boyfriend on a couch in the Birds he wasn't so bitter. Tempus fugit.

by Anonymousreply 86July 10, 2024 1:19 PM

Oh Boo fucking Hoo, I fill so unfulfilled. Try working an assembly line, be a waiter, work in a warehouse. Bend over I will make you feel fulfilled.

by Anonymousreply 87July 10, 2024 1:23 PM

R85 Millions and millions of working people don't "own their own lives."

But they find don't fucking whine about it, especially if they're sitting on a mountain of money.

Corbett, for years, has had the means to do anything he wants. The fact that he didn't is his problem.

by Anonymousreply 88July 10, 2024 1:27 PM

I wonder how he's like my job? I wanted to be an actor and for various reasons wasn't able to go very far with it. Anyway, isn't he old enough and rich enough to retire?
