by Anonymousreply 5July 7, 2024 2:04 PM

I wouldn't want to stay there with all that going on either. The hotel and the organizers should have procured the ENTIRE property for the circuit event. You can't have a pool party with a bunch of horny partying gay men and have regular guest families trying to enjoy the pool over a long hot summer holiday weekend. Poor planning. I'm surprised circuit parties are still a thing.

by Anonymousreply 6July 7, 2024 2:04 PM

R6 fuck the straights who bitched about the event. Why not make THEM leave? The Daddyland participants also paid for the right to be there.

by Anonymousreply 7July 7, 2024 2:10 PM

Agree with r6. The hotel did not plan properly. Sounds like the group went way too wild. I'd be pissed if I was a regular customer not knowing this was happening, thinking I'd get an enjoyable hotel room I paid for. I was at a hotel last year with some high-school cheerleader event. It was horrid - dumbass girls non-stop screaming, taking over the pool, leaving water bottles everywhere on the elevator floors, slamming doors all night, etc.

by Anonymousreply 8July 7, 2024 2:18 PM

I remember when IML would take over the entire Crown Plaza in Chicago every Memorial Day Weekend. It was such a to do with lots of events , huge market and parties. They were invited back year after year. Take a lesson from that event.

by Anonymousreply 9July 7, 2024 2:23 PM

I remember that as well, R9. But iirc, that property had separate wings, divided by a lobby area or something.

Still I recall one bride and her party walking through the IML area asking for photos

Thread's five hours old and not one legit link, just bullshit innuendo.

by Anonymousreply 18July 7, 2024 6:22 PM

Sounds like the hotel owner/management got greedy and didn't want to reserve the entire hotel, or at least tell customers who'd booked a room before this convention was scheduled to re-book elsewhere. It's a problem when you have a group event at a hotel that doesn't comport with everyone's sensibilities, and therefore incumbent upon management to mitigate the consequences.

I went to IML a couple of times when it was at The Palmer House in Chicago, the perfect venue for the event due to the architecture of the hotel (the E-shaped configuration was particularly nice for the voyeurs and exhibitionists). I rode down the elevator with a family from one of the spacer states, and they were noticeably nervous about it. We chatted and I tried to put their minds at ease, telling them to avoid the lobby (especially the bars) between 9pm and 3am if at all possible, but not to worry. I think it meant something to them that someone asked.

Meanwhile, I chatted up a bellman who replied that he and the staff loved it when IML came to town. He literally said "you guys are good tippers" and the maids appreciated that we tended to put all of our trash in plastic bags and leave the rooms pretty clean, with the notable exceptions of the rooms used as orgy venues. He said that there's always one room on every floor that they have to bring in the heavy duty carpet cleaner and disinfectant, but the kicker was when he said "which is about half as many as most conventions, just not the same..." pausing while looking for the right word, finally saying "...filth."

by Anonymousreply 19July 7, 2024 6:39 PM

So, word is that the Plaza booked two organizations for the weekend--DaddyLand and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Any minimum-wage worker (no that wasn't a dig), would have predicted a conflict. What could possibly go wrong by booking half your hotel with sorority women who openly admit they are conceited, self-flagellating, righteous, egocentric and narcissistic alongside a gay 5-day circuit party with off its trappings: overt masculinity, exhibitionism, celebration and consumption. Imagine the headlines had DaddyLand persuaded the hotel to serve a three-hour eviction on all guests associated with the majority black AKA Sorority. There would be literal rioting in the streets.

Official reactions

Ersin Winokur, the promoter of Daddyland, posted a statement on Facebook addressing the incident.

He claimed that despite event planners' efforts to negotiate and offer additional security measures, the hotel owner was disrespectful and decided to evict everyone attending the events.

“The host hotel has advisedDaddyLand Festival - Dallas 2024 due to complaints by guests not part of the festival they would be canceling the remaining events,” Winokur wrote.

“During negotiations to rectify the situation and offering to place extra security and make more accommodation to the guests staying in the hotel, ownership became outwardly disrespectful to the team, its party guests, and parts of our community. While we stand up for the many for the actions of the few the owner refused to listen to reason and made the decision to evict without notice everyone attending our events. We are committed to making this right for those affected.”

Winokur assured attendees they would receive refunds for the canceled events and that the remaining Daddyland events at other venues would continue as planned.

He also referred The Advocate to a staff member who asked to remain anonymous but reiterated that many of the justifications being posted online were untrue.

The Advocate contacted AKA for comment but did not receive a response.

Vice President Kamala Harris, an AKA member, is scheduled to speak at the sorority’s convention Wednesday.

by Anonymousreply 37July 10, 2024 12:59 PM

Dispelling rumors

Among the rumors that swirled around the incident were accusations that attendees had been found nude and unconscious in the lobby, that some flashed other hotel guests in an elevator, or that syringes with the erectile dysfunction medication Trimix were discovered in a designated “boom boom room," where attendees could have sex.

Tognazzini and Daddyland staff firmly denied these rumors. Tognazzini confirmed that no such incidents had occurred and that the decision to evict the attendees was based on complaints about their attire.

The anonymous Daddyland staff member echoed this, noting that reports of a dark “boom boom room” were untrue, though some attendees dispute this

claim. They also highlighted that off-duty Dallas police officers were staffing the event, and no police reports were made.

Don’t come back

Tognazzini said the incident cost the hotel between $60,000 and $70,000.

He said the hotel had previously hosted Daddyland without issues and insisted that his actions were not rooted in homophobia.

“My son is gay, and I’ve been to a lot of gay parties. We have a lot of gay people here, and we are in favor of the LGBTQ+ community,” he said.

He added, “I’m a liberal. Everyone is welcome here.” He said that the incident could have been avoided had the promoter bought out the entire hotel. Despite this, he clarified that he would no longer work with Daddyland’s promoter due to the recent events. “The last time they were perfect. This time, it went to hell,” he added, emphasizing that the promoter’s handling of the event was a significant factor in the decision.

Tognazzini also addressed rumors of nonpayment, saying that the promoter had paid all the bills. “The promoter put people in here, screwed us all up. We talked to him, he couldn’t do anything, so we threw ’em all out,” Tognazzini said. “It happens.”

Vice President Kamala Harris to visit Dallas on Wednesday

Vice President Kamala Harris will be in Dallas on Wednesday to speak to a gathering of about 20,000 members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., a historically Black international service organization focused on social justice.

The visit comes as Harris, who is campaigning for reelection alongside President Joe Biden, is being floated as a potential replacement for Biden at the top of the ticket after the president’s halting debate performance last month. Biden has repeatedly said he will stay in the race.

Harris, a member of the sorority, will address the Dallas gathering at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center as part of Harris’ “Summer of Engagement” tour.

She also plans to speak at a gathering of the Zeta Phi Beta, another influential Black sorority, in Indianapolis later this month.

The tour “will be a continuation of her intentional efforts to build coalitions while speaking directly with Black Americans, women, young leaders, and community leaders from throughout the nation,” according to a July 3 White House statement.

At the sorority’s national convention in Dallas, Harris is expected to promote the Biden administration’s work supporting economic opportunity and urge support for abortion rights, gun restrictions, better voting access and environmental protections.

“This keynote address by Harris allows us to continue the efforts of our international program initiative, ‘Advocate for Social Justice,’” Alpha Kappa Alpha said on Instagram.

AKA, with about 360,000 members at campus-based organizations in 12 countries, is led by International President & CEO Danette Anthony Reed of Dallas.

The organization was founded in 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C., making it the nation’s oldest Greek-lettered organization established by African American women.

Dallas Voice report on Daddyland eviction gives credibility to claims that it was justifiable over behavior.

The byline for this article is Tammye Nash. The original article posted by the Dallas Voice was this one.

The article was updated with a slanderous claim that Daddyland had been evicted over its advertising.

Shortly after noon on Sunday, a former DaddyLand employee, Jason Martinez, told Dallas Voice that problems between the event producer and the host hotel started long before Saturday night, July 7, when the owner of the Crowne Plaza cancelled DaddyLand events scheduled at the hotel and demanded that everyone there for DaddyLand leave the hotel, including those who had booked rooms.

Martinez, who said he “worked on the DaddyLand event up until a month ago when I quit,” said he had been contacted by the sales manager at the hotel who “told me corporate was receiving several complaints regarding the boom boom room, or dark room, and that Ersin needed to remove all wording regarding that” from advertisements and other promotional materials.

However, Martinez said that the event promoter “disappeared for about three weeks, not returning any of my calls, and when I finally saw him at the pride event, he acted like nothing was wrong, and that there was no situation with corporate.”

Martinez shared with Dallas Voice screen caps of his messages to Winokur, including telling the promoter “Hey, your phone is not working,” and showing failed efforts to connect with him through audio calls via WhatsApp.

Other screen caps show a string of messages from Martinez to Winokur saying the hotel’s sales manager had called again about promotional materials including the boom boom room, telling the promoter that “costume designers are on hold waiting for answers” and that DJs were “messaging asking questions.”

None of the screen caps show any replies from Winokur.

Why Tammye Nash would think that this was credible enought to mention is unfathomable.

There is one obvious reasons why a competent reporter would question this.

Jason Martinez is a former employee. Former employees are known to sometimes be disgruntled. Screen captures of supposed texts by a former employee is hardly the evidence you need to discredit someone. It could be that Winokur had a policy of ignoring this particular individual given this person’s past behavior.

As of July 9, 2024, 3:35 pm the Dallas Voice hasn’t issued a retraction or apologized.

It's a gay event centered around a sexual aspect of our existence. I don't have to know anything about daddyland specifically to know that something called daddyland would likely involve activity that would be too much for regular hotel guests. . But it's really on the hotel for not requiring them to rent out the whole space.

by Anonymousreply 42July 10, 2024 1:20 PM

Ohhh.... even mainstream news gonna press Kamala on AKA v DaddyLand... Axios

The big picture:

Harris is expected to address the convention's roughly 20,000 attendees about abortion rights, gun restrictions, better voting access and environmental protections.

She joined the sorority, a historically Black organization that promotes social justice, in college.

Yes, but:

Hundreds of gay men were kicked out of a Dallas hotel over the weekend after members of the sorority complained about their attire, the Advocate reports.

What happened:

The men were attending the Daddyland Festival, a music event that celebrates the LGBTQ+ community.

The owner of the Crowne Plaza Downtown Dallas, which was a host hotel for Daddyland participants, told the Advocate that some of the AKA members had complained about the attendees' attire.

"We have rules here of clothes, and they're supposed to wear their clothes, and they didn't wear their clothes," the owner told the Advocate.

The hotel served notices to dozens of rooms affiliated with Daddyland, asking guests to leave, offering them a refund and saying that their events were canceled. Friction point: There are differing accounts of what happened, and whether the eviction was justified.

"A pool party at the hotel had women dressed in bikini tops and bottoms walking through the lobby, and nobody seemed to care. But gay men in short shorts and tank tops led to a mass eviction," Kayvon Sohrabi, a Daddyland vendor who was staying at the hotel, told the Advocate.

What we're watching:

Whether the drama surrounding her sorority affects Harris' plans to speak at the convention.

I always wonder what type of briefing they give the staff at hotels and cruise lines that have events like this? I'm assuming people can opt out of working them. Now everyone you will see a lot of ass cheeks, genitals and extreme body hair but just keep going around doing your job. If you see men having sex anywhere on the premises pretend you never saw them. If you ate male DO NOT enter any room without another male staff person. Have your med alert bracelets activated at all times. We also don't acknowledge noise complaints. Any questions?

Well what the hell else would do in a BALLroom - play baseball?

by Anonymousreply 47July 10, 2024 5:31 PM

Agreed there is no way a 3 day homo hedonism event like “Daddyland” can just coexist in harmony with straight randos in the same hotel.

This is why Atlantis cruises exist! I’ve been on two. Very good times.

R46, I was curious about this on the Atlantis cruises, and chatted with a few of the staff. It turns out they actually went out of their way to do the gay cruises and they much prefer them to the straight ones. As one guy put it "You guys are friendly. Messy but friendly.. and fun! A lot of unhappy people go on the regular (straight) cruises and they take it out on the crew. It really drags you down after a week .. so much whining and rude attitude."

Black sorority gets a gay men evicted from Dallas hotel before Kamala Harris' speech

Vice President Kamala Harris spoke Wednesday morning in Dallas at the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority’s national convention as accusations of homophobia and hotel evictions surfaced.

Harris pledged to the nation’s first historically black sorority in 1986 when she was a student at Howard University, reported Fox 4 KDFW.

The biennial national convention was held at the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center, with many Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) sorority guests staying at the Crowne Plaza Downtown Dallas.

Over the weekend, hundreds of gay men who were attending the Daddyland circuit party stayed at the same host hotel as the AKA, reported the Advocate.

The AKA guests reportedly complained about the attire of the gay men, prompting accusations of homophobia.

Due to the AKA sorority complaints, security officers and hotel management evicted the occupants of 88 rooms from the Daddyland circuit party, per the Advocate.

The hotel issued the following notice to those being evicted:

“The OWNER OF THE HOTEL is requesting you LEAVE [IMMEDIATELY]. You will get a refund for Saturday, July 6, 2024, and Sunday, July 7, 2024. Please move out BY 6 PM. ALL PARTIES & EVENTS ARE CANCELLED SATURDAY 7/6, SUNDAY 7/7, & MONDAY 7/8.”

As evicted guests scrambled to find other accommodations, some allege that the eviction was rooted in homophobia.

“I honestly didn’t witness anything egregiously wild and out of the ordinary for a regular circuit party. I think there is a matter of attendees not respecting the public spaces based on stories I’ve heard. But the hotel kicking out all attendees immediately was horrendously inappropriate,” one anonymous attendee told the Advocate.

The hotel owner, Terry Tognazzini, defended his decision.

“We have rules here of clothes, and they’re supposed to wear their clothes, and they didn’t wear their clothes,” Tognazzini told the Advocate.

The Dallas Express reached out to Tognazzini and Vice President Harris but did not receive a response.

Harris’ speech comes during a tumultuous time within the Democratic Party, with some members calling for Biden to cancel his re-election bid.

by Anonymousreply 58July 11, 2024 1:57 PM

Is it really that hard to link the news article or social media post when you post these excerpts?

by Anonymousreply 59July 11, 2024 4:18 PM

It seems so silly to have circuit parties in 2024. Isn't it time to grow up?

by Anonymousreply 60July 11, 2024 8:57 PM

The sistas were looking for action but all they got was rejection.

by Anonymousreply 61July 11, 2024 10:04 PM

Harris missed a huge opportunity. She should have arranged an emergency summit between the leaders of her sorority and the remaining daddies. If she could have brokered a negotiated settlement between two groups so implacably opposed in their values as these two, even at this 11th hour, and got them to share the hotel more fairly and effectively next year, it might have been the political triumph that propelled her to the Presidency.
