The Gays and Tennis, Part 170 -- On to the Wimbledon Finals!
by Anonymous | reply 601 | July 14, 2024 6:08 PM |
Roddick was severely fuckable back in the day.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | July 5, 2024 2:42 AM |
Oh, Andy.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | July 5, 2024 2:42 AM |
Gosh, the Murray tribute got to me.
He was never my favorite, but seeing Rafa, Roger and Novak take part in the tribute was very cool. They clearly have a ton of respect for him.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | July 5, 2024 3:25 AM |
Did they play "you had a bad day" for him?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | July 5, 2024 3:29 AM |
Was that Venus in the tribute to Andy?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | July 5, 2024 3:35 AM |
[quote]Did they play "you had a bad day" for him?
They played that for Rishi.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 5, 2024 3:41 AM |
Andy looks so fucking old.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 5, 2024 6:45 AM |
Andy's send-off was really cool. Though I was surprised there was no Serena considering they played doubles together. It was lovely to see how much Andy is respected by his peers.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 5, 2024 6:52 AM |
Djokovic looks pretty rough.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 5, 2024 7:18 AM |
Really liked the tribute, though I didn’t like how the players in the video were clearly just reading scripted lines.
Would have been better to hear their own words and takes.
Not that any of it was insincere but it was clear they wrote a script and divided out who would say what.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 5, 2024 9:37 AM |
More butts please.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | July 5, 2024 3:16 PM |
Serena has now come out for Murray. I think Murray might be the most popular player of all time among his fellow players. Even Federer's goodbye didn't cause this kind of reaction.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 5, 2024 3:21 PM |
On the Tennis Podcast, they noted it was odd that Roger wasn’t on court for the retirement ceremony, despite being on the grounds.
They speculated he didn’t want to draw focus, as he’s such a Wimbledon luminary.
Who knows.

Tiafoe is playing Carlitos really well. But what is up with the weird epaulet things on the Nike shirts?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 5, 2024 4:30 PM |
Tiafoe had a minor chance to possibly close it out (when he was up 30-0 on Alcaraz's serve at 5-5 in the 4th) , but Alcaraz wins the 4th set tiebreak and cruises in the 5th
by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 5, 2024 5:29 PM |
[quote] But what is up with the weird epaulet things on the Nike shirts?
Perhaps it’s a subtle tribute to Roger? He went through an epaulet phase.

Roger was just interviewed on ESPN. He said he had a previous commitment he couldn’t miss which prevented him from attending Andy’s send off. It sounds like he absolutely would’ve been there if possible.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 5, 2024 9:21 PM |
Damn typos. This video talks about of our favorite Legs.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | July 5, 2024 9:27 PM |

Mopsy has won three give setters in this first three rounds, been subject to multiple delays, and has to play in-form Sinner tomorrow. Ouch. We'll see if he can make it interesting.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | July 6, 2024 5:33 PM |

R51 I think it's his first Slam. He's mainly been playing in Challengers. He created a stir in the first round by taking our Rublev, and seems to be maintaining that form - he's seriously troubling Musetti today.

This sort of thing always seems to happen to her....just as a draw opens up and a slam title is in sight, she either gets injured or chokes. That collapse against Sabalenka in last year's USO semis was one of the most brutal I've seen.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | July 7, 2024 3:51 PM |
Why is Meddy "small cat"?
by Anonymous | reply 86 | July 7, 2024 3:52 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 89 | July 7, 2024 4:33 PM |
That was a quality match.
Humbert fought like a tiger all the way, but Alcaraz just turned on the after-burners in the last two games.
Alcaraz - like last year - will be very battle hardened going into the sharp end of the tournament.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | July 7, 2024 4:37 PM |
Yeah Sinner, spank the fratboy out of Shelton but good!
by Anonymous | reply 91 | July 7, 2024 4:54 PM |

Talking the neck up, dear. Shelton makes Sinner look like a supermodel.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | July 7, 2024 7:38 PM |
Sun has the label “Astonish” prominently displayed on her chest. Just a coincidence or is she trolling Radacanu?
by Anonymous | reply 110 | July 7, 2024 7:41 PM |
Rennae Stubbs is obnoxious.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | July 7, 2024 7:42 PM |
Damn, our Grigor is out. Just horrendously sad. The referee is going to hear from a lot of angry players about the moisture at the back and sides of the court. Maddy Keys, Dimitrov, Raducanu--all slipped today. Cost Keys and Grigor their matches, for fucks sake.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | July 7, 2024 7:43 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 114 | July 7, 2024 7:45 PM |
I, too, had never seen Sun play before. I was really impressed with how she handled the pressure of playing against a crowd favorite on Center Court. She really took it to Radacanu and deserved the win.

Should America’s Sweetheart Danielle Rose Collins postpone her retirement? She’s done well this year.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | July 7, 2024 9:30 PM |
Navarro rock solid and played great. Coco got flustered and her forehand broke down, as it does.
Every player has a range of play, and a range of stroke production. But the range should not be as big as Coco's is for a top 5 player. Sure, she may have a bad day with her forehand, but it shouldn't be THAT bad.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | July 7, 2024 9:37 PM |
It's no secret that if you hammer Gauff's forehand it will break down. I thought that she had hired a coach specifically to work on the forehand. What happened with that?
by Anonymous | reply 126 | July 7, 2024 9:49 PM |
Gilbert said that if she changes her grip and totally reworks her forehand it could upset the rest of her game. As dicey as her forehand is, she's achieved a LOT as is. And reworking a tennis stroke is NOT easy as things are ingrained by this point. So I just don't know what she does. I've always thought she could take a more defensive approach to her forehand, which she sort of did when she first started. Take a few steps back, hit more mid-pace higher-arc looping shots to give herself time and make her opponents have to make shots. I'm thinking Sabatini, or ASV, or Martinez. Then be aggressive with the forehand on mid-court balls and passing shots. I'm not a coach (though I do play tennis, lol), so I'm just throwing things out there.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | July 7, 2024 9:55 PM |
ESPN must be bummed. The big names on the women's side are out.

Pro Mopsy here, though he does get on my nerves when he takes overkill to a whole new level. It's positive energy, though, which makes all the difference.
The players I can't stand are those, like Djokovic and Zverev, who bring Tasmanian Devil energy to the game.

I don’t want to see Fritz go down in three routine sets and am hoping he’ll try something new to disrupt Zverev’s game. Unfortunately, I don’t think he has the variety of shot to do that.

Putintseva is such a brat on court. Peppa has mellowed out with that nonsense, but she was formerly the worst behaved in the WTA. It just comes off petulant and childish.
Danielle Rose remains the grande dame of cunting around the court, but somehow she comes off more fiery and authoritative and it just looks less pathetic coming from her.

Spaniards often carry both the maternal and the paternal surnames.
Alcaraz is his dad. Garfia is his mom.
by Anonymous | reply 229 | July 8, 2024 11:31 PM |
The first or paternal surname is Alcaraz and the second or maternal family name is Garfia.
by Anonymous | reply 230 | July 8, 2024 11:31 PM |
R228 it's his full Spanish name: Carlos Alcaraz Garfia. In Spain you take both last names of your parents.

[quote] Please explain Garfia for Carlitos?
In addition, when Carlitos first started playing professionally he was listed as Carlos Alcaraz. At some point the draws and scores started using his full name of Carlos Alcaraz Garfia. I’m not sure why that happened (or why it didn’t happen in the first place) given that, as R231 indicated, RCB, ADF and others are referred to by their full names. Nadal, interestingly, has always been referred to as Rafael Nadal rather than his full name.
by Anonymous | reply 232 | July 8, 2024 11:45 PM |

"Spaniards often carry both the maternal and the paternal surnames."
So what happens when two people with both maternal and paternal surnames get married. They just don't keep adding names in perpetuity, do they?
So if Carlos Alcaraz (paternal) Garfia (maternal) gets married to Conchita Martinez (paternal) Bernat (maternal) (I know, Conchita is a lesbian, but just to illustrate) and they have a son, Javier, and a daughter, Isabelle, what are their names? Only the maternal names carry? So, Javier Alcaraz Martinez and Isabelle Alcaraz Martinez?

by Anonymous | reply 296 | July 9, 2024 7:06 PM |
"Paolini is journeywoman?"
She's probably not anymore, but she definitely was. He career started in earnest in 2015 (even though Wiki says she turned pro on 2011). She didn't play the main draw of a Slam until 2019 - and it was only one Slam that year before consistently playing starting in 2020. She never advanced beyond the second round of a Slam until 2024 (AO). First tournament win didn't come until 2021 (a 250) and second win 2024. She didn't reach the Top 50 until 2022, top 20 in 2023. So, in addition to direct entry, she was qualifying, relying on wild cards, sometimes playing challengers for quite a few years before she got established - which is sort of the journeyman MO.

Musetti played a hell of a match. He exploited Fritz’s weaknesses and played with such self-belief.

by Anonymous | reply 339 | July 10, 2024 7:06 PM |
Mr, Insufferable will have made it to the semis or finals without having played against anyone in the top 10, and the only top 20 player he's faced is Rune in a very bad patch. Pretty sure NoVaxx has a deal with the devil.

by Anonymous | reply 341 | July 10, 2024 7:30 PM |
The slams are always fun up to certain point and then it only takes one day of results to make them turn to shit. This was that day.

[quote] Fuck musetti and his ugly mole!
We appreciate your comment. We also noticed today that he, unfortunately, also has a mole on the back of his neck which is usually covered by his collar and/or hair.
by Anonymous | reply 345 | July 10, 2024 7:45 PM |
It's a hell of a win, but he's played well on the grass. Taylor just doesn't have the right stuff to break through yet. Not sure he ever will! This one will sting.

Blame the poison pussy.
by Anonymous | reply 347 | July 10, 2024 8:35 PM |
This is the worst Wimby! There's no good storyline heading into the semis. Musetti is cool, I guess. But Novak will utterly destroy him.
In fact, Novak will cruise to the title. (Hurt knee my ass.) Carlos won't do it twice in a row. Especially because he's actually been very inconsistent in matches he should be breezing through. That won't work against Novak.
And while I like Ryba, I wanted it to be a bit more challenging. She should also cruise to the title.
by Anonymous | reply 348 | July 10, 2024 9:37 PM |
G*E*M*S death today.
by Anonymous | reply 349 | July 10, 2024 9:41 PM |
The Novaxx rant was embarrassing. He has the worst most sensitive rabbit ears and the way he tries to scold crowds is ridiculously smug and unbecoming. I don't care how great anyone is. You do not get to decide how people feel or react to you. His stick up the ass peacock walk is enough to make anyone roll their eyes and want to cheer against him. The ego on this guy is absurd.
by Anonymous | reply 350 | July 11, 2024 4:52 AM |
Gotta love the title on the Guardian’s main web page today:
[quote]Musetti edges Fritz in five-set thriller to set up Djokovic semi
Someone must have had fun with that title, because they then added “-final” after “semi”. And, unfortunately, if you follow the link you end up with a much more prosaic title: “Lorenzo Musetti sinks Taylor Fritz in five sets to set up Djokovic clash”.
by Anonymous | reply 351 | July 11, 2024 8:02 AM |
R350, I think his ears were especially sensitive that day because his children were there in the stadium to hear the crowd. I’m a fan of Djokovic’s tennis but I do think he’s a bit paranoid at times. I really believe the crowd was just cheering Rune on and not booing him.

I have been rooting for Donna Vekic since round 3, but only because I had her confused for Petra Martic, and I really like to see a veteran break through. Now with this realization, I have nobody to root for among the milquetoast quarterfinalists.
by Anonymous | reply 354 | July 11, 2024 2:45 PM |
This is Vecic’s first semi in 43 grand slams. I think she qualifies as a veteran who is finally breaking through.

It would be lovely if this was the final and Novaxx had been disposed of earlier in the tournament
by Anonymous | reply 396 | July 12, 2024 2:59 PM |
I think the umpire heard him swear at her (3 times ‘fuck you!’ according to most, with an added a ‘bitch’ or ‘piece of shit’ at the end according to others), and she called over a supervisor and the tournament referee. They discussed the issue for a bit and she gave him a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct in the end. Perhaps the umpire Eva Asderaki wanted to discuss a stronger punishment (defaulting?)?
by Anonymous | reply 397 | July 12, 2024 3:07 PM |
keep it classy Small Cat!
by Anonymous | reply 398 | July 12, 2024 3:13 PM |
They should penalize him like they do in hockey and in this case go ahead, play the match, but disqualify him from participating in the next major. Of course all the majors would have to agree on that kind of ruling ...
by Anonymous | reply 399 | July 12, 2024 3:32 PM |
Not sure how anyone can root for the russian asshole. He should have been defaulted.
by Anonymous | reply 400 | July 12, 2024 3:58 PM |
It was a difficult call and replays have shown how close it was. Asderaki's probably the most experienced umpire on the tour and even she had to seek advice on this one.
Medvedev got his punishment for swearing at the umpire but it would seem she and the supervisors decided that was enough as it had been such a close, difficult call.
by Anonymous | reply 401 | July 12, 2024 4:08 PM |

R410 No, you autistic freak.
by Anonymous | reply 411 | July 12, 2024 5:07 PM |
There are still a few, R407, per this thread, as obnoxious and willfully blind as we'd expect them to be.
by Anonymous | reply 412 | July 12, 2024 5:09 PM |
R407, sorry, but I am. I've written this before, but the reason I admire Djokovic is because, when he joined the tour, Federer and Nadal were so dominant and everyone else seemed to resign themselves to playing supporting cast to those two superstars. But Djokovic wasn't going to be satisfied with that. He committed himself to improving his technique, his physicality, and his mental game so that he could challenge those two seemingly invincible athletes. Djokovic wasn't intimidated going up against two of the all-time greats, and for that I give him a lot of credit. Now, as for the ingratiating things he does (thankfully he finally stopped with the "boobs out" gesture), his anti-vax stance, his frequent boorish behavior on court, etc., I remind myself of that quote about amazing athletes with clay feet. Roughly paraphrasing, it goes something like, "Admire them for what they can do, not for who they are."
by Anonymous | reply 413 | July 12, 2024 5:11 PM |
Oh lord, the BBC have served up the Axis of Awful as the commentary team for this match: McEnroe, Kyrgios and The King of Bore, Andrew Castle. Cue much fellating of Novak and platitudes galore!
by Anonymous | reply 414 | July 12, 2024 5:15 PM |
McEnroe's defense of Djokovic today was to say that despite everyone having 'dark' thoughts about Djokovic, "he is well liked in the locker room"

by Anonymous | reply 417 | July 12, 2024 5:19 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 418 | July 12, 2024 5:21 PM |
R418, I totally get that because my husband is the same way. He can't stand Djokovic and won't watch his matches. I, on the other hand, love watching Djokovic play because of his amazing technique. I'm just a lousy club player, but I try to emulate Djokovic's groundstrokes and his serve. And, yeah, I've also been trying to increase my flexibility because, as I've gotten older, I've been getting more of those pesky injuries, ugh.

by Anonymous | reply 431 | July 12, 2024 8:00 PM |
Djokovic is an excessively complicated personality. There have been plenty of alienating athletes but I’ve never seen anyone who was so self-destructive yet so successful.
by Anonymous | reply 432 | July 12, 2024 8:11 PM |
It's puzzling that Djokovic doesn't seem to understand that being so utterly full of himself is what makes him so unpopular.
by Anonymous | reply 433 | July 12, 2024 8:18 PM |
I sincerely hope Carlos can take Djokovic down. I want Nole to look back at Wimbeledon as yet ANOTHER loss in 2024. I'd really like for him to go the full Tennis year without a win so that, every time he plays, the announcers bring it iup.
by Anonymous | reply 434 | July 12, 2024 8:20 PM |
Sadly, I'm preparing myself for Novaxx hoisting the trophy. I hope at least that its a dogfight.
by Anonymous | reply 435 | July 12, 2024 8:23 PM |
We could discuss Djokovic and why he's not liked for days. There are so many reasons.
Thing is, when he first came on the scene he was really liked and popular. And then he ruined it. He's still well-liked amongst other players so it's entirely his on-court and other antics which have turned people off. It takes a lot to make the Wimbledon crowd boo, even if they're hiding it under a 'ruuuuuune'.
by Anonymous | reply 436 | July 12, 2024 8:24 PM |
Carlitos is going to have to be a lot more focused in the final. I don't think he can afford to go in and out of the match at least once a set against Novak.
by Anonymous | reply 437 | July 12, 2024 8:26 PM |
I'm somewhat skeptical that Roger has a lot of time for Djokovic. I could be wrong of course, but in the whole 'well liked by other players' i think their may a few exceptions. Don't confuse the required polite conviviality with unspoken truths.

With all due respect to Roger, people change. Roger is no longer in the locker room with Nole. He may be confusing respect with likeability or just being diplomatic. No sense in Roger tarnishing his reputation by giving his true opiono of ND. I'm sure the other players respect his game but I doubt any of them are rushing to have drinks, green juice shots, or whatever the fuck, with him after a game or workout, even if Nole doesn't drink.

Fucking Novak with his new post-match 'fiddle' routine that seems to have replaced the boobs out. Pretending it's something to do with 'recognising' his daughter who's learning the violin, when it's fucking obvious it's to wind up and 'punish' those in the crowd that dared to cheer for his opponent.
It's so obvious with that manic shit-eating grin plastered all over his face while he's doing it.

Day 13
Several famous stars rushed to see some live tennis as Wimbledon reaches its final stages. On Saturday (13 July), Hollywood star Kate Beckinsale (Serendipity, the Underworld franchise) was sat in the royal box alongside Skyfall and 1917 director Sam Mendes and Strictly Come Dancing professional Johannes Radebe. Hugh Jackman, who is in London to promote his new film, Deadpool & Wolverine, was also in attendence, sat with theatre director ian Rickson, while singer Ellie Goulding was also present. Former tennis pros Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova were there, also.

Kate Middleton is supposed to attend the men's final
by Anonymous | reply 488 | July 13, 2024 3:51 PM |
And today Maria Sharapova headed back to SW19, this time as a guest in the Royal Box - just as she did last week on Day Three of the 2024 Championships.
The Russian, who hung up her tennis racquet as she retired in 2020, was joined by her fiance Alexander Gilkes in the posh seats to watch the ladies' singles final between Jasmine Paolini and Barbora Krejcikova on Centre Court.
The superstar couple are enjoying massive success in the business world with their growing empire.

SO????
by Anonymous | reply 490 | July 13, 2024 3:56 PM |
Zendaya, Maya Jama, Anya Taylor-Joy, Tom Cruise and Pierce Brosnan also got an invite - but they were in the hospitality seats rather than the Royal Box.

I didn't see her; I had turned it off right at the end of the match. Really? Bartoli had gotten super skinny after she retired, BEFORE the Ozempic craze. I'm surprised she didn't switch methods at some point. Or maybe she doesn't care.
by Anonymous | reply 515 | July 13, 2024 7:38 PM |

I don’t know what to feel about Barbora over Jasmine. I guess I don’t really care. Slight edge to Jasmine, I guess. Obviously much more excited about Marfia vs. Novaxx.
by Anonymous | reply 522 | July 13, 2024 10:11 PM |
I was happy for Barbora. She played great tennis and did not have an easy draw. She seems 'no drama' on court and it must be really sweet to her to win a second major, on grass no less.
by Anonymous | reply 523 | July 13, 2024 10:20 PM |
WIMBLEDON's awful last 3 winners in the women's draw should make one wonder if grass needs to go. Or more tournaments on it? The US will have zero grass court events after this year's HOF. Tennis on grass is pleasing and I do love how it exposes players like Iga, Coco who just cannot master it.

I'm guess grass courts are not cheap or easy to maintain, and that's part of the problem.

All the stars came out for the men’s final on Sunday (14 July). Kate Middleton made an appearance alongside her sister, Pippa. It’s the second event the princess has attended since revealing her cancer diagnosis.
Tom Cruise was also in attendance alongside his Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie, as well as actor Benedict Cumberbatch and his wife Sophie Hunter. Australian tennis pro Lleyton Hewitt was seated in the royal box as was London mayor, Sadiq Khan.

I wanted to see the 2, 2, and 4 blowout, but Alcaraz blew it from 40-0 up - a major hiccup, and then looked bad in the 5-5 return game. That said, was massively impressed he held it together mentally after blowing that chance and the letting the GOAT back in the match, won his service game at 5-6, and won the tiebreak. Still a comprehensive win. Kudos to him.
