Let's discuss Alicia Witt

The daughter of teachers, Witt was born and raised in Massachusetts and became a child actor when David Lynch cast her in "Dune" and "Twin Peaks" after seeing footage of her reciting Shakespeare on "That's Incredible!". She went on to have a decent career in a mixture of big-budget and indie movies ("Mr. Holland's Opus", "Citizen Ruth", "Urban Legend", "Cecil B. Demented"), though most know her for her role as the cunty daughter on "Cybill" (1995–1998).

Though described by some publications as a "child prodigy", many are of the opinion that she is a terrible actress, which I don't know that I agree with (though I admittedly have only seen bits and pieces of "Cybill"). I thought she did a serviceable job in the films I've seen her in, and was at times genuinely funny (she does all of her outrageous lines in "Cecil B. Demented" justice).

Lately it seems she's happily working in Hallmark Christmasland, and writing/performing her music. I find her music painfully boring, though she is admittedly a good pianist. I was surprised to see that she has a substantial role in the highly-anticipated upcoming Nicolas Cage horror movie "Longlegs". Her name was conjured up in the headlines a couple of years ago when her parents froze to death in their house, which was apparently their own doing (they refused her help), and to make matters worse, she had just begun embarking on treatment for breast cancer.

Cybill Shepherd said she was a bitch to work with.

by Anonymousreply 1July 2, 2024 2:00 AM

She’s pretty average imo

by Anonymousreply 2July 2, 2024 2:00 AM

You buried the lede, OP.

R1 I’m going to venture a guess that the number of people who have said Cybill was a bitch to work with is probably far more than those who’ve said the same about Alicia

by Anonymousreply 4July 2, 2024 2:03 AM

She IS Alicia Witt!

by Anonymousreply 5July 2, 2024 2:05 AM

She used to be very pretty but she’s looking rough these days. Redheads don’t usually age well

by Anonymousreply 6July 2, 2024 2:06 AM

Get out of my mind!

by Anonymousreply 7July 2, 2024 2:06 AM

She was in a movie in the early '90s called "Fun" about two teenage girls who murder a random elderly woman just for the hell of it. I think it was based on a true story. It was an ugly, unpleasant movie, but I recall her being pretty good in it, especially for a relatively inexperienced actress.

by Anonymousreply 8July 2, 2024 2:10 AM

She was cute on Craig's show and they played well off of each other.

One of the three appearances is her playing the piano.

R6 she was very beautiful. I think she still is honestly, she's just older and doesn't have the baby fat anymore. As you said, redheads don't tend to fare as well in aging just because they're more susceptible to sun damage. I'm guessing the breast cancer treatment also did a number on her.

What about me? I was MOLESTED!

by Anonymousreply 11July 2, 2024 2:20 AM

Alicia's mom, a schoolteacher, was a Guinness Book of World Records holder for having the longest hair for six years. I get the impression that her parents were kooky. Intellectual, but kooky.

by Anonymousreply 12July 2, 2024 2:21 AM

She did a nice turn on THE SOPRANOS in an episode called "D Girl."

by Anonymousreply 13July 2, 2024 2:29 AM

Cybill Shepherd was such a raging cunt through the duration of "Cybill" that Chuck Lorre scripted a CSI episode years later based on her, and the plotline had her being murdered. I somehow doubt Alicia was the problem on that set.

by Anonymousreply 14July 2, 2024 2:29 AM

Julian Lennon, whose music is featured prominently in Mr. Holland's Opus (starring, among others, Alicia Witt) and who sings the film's main theme, "Cole's Song", on the soundtrack, shares a birthday, April 8th, with distinguished actor Eric Porter.

by Anonymousreply 15July 2, 2024 2:35 AM

Cancer took a toll on her.

by Anonymousreply 16July 2, 2024 2:38 AM

I used to get her confused with Lauren Ambrose.

by Anonymousreply 17July 2, 2024 3:09 AM

R17 they honestly could play sisters. They look very similar, red hair aside. Alicia is just taller.

by Anonymousreply 18July 2, 2024 3:15 AM

Not terrible, just a total mediocrity as an actress.

by Anonymousreply 19July 2, 2024 3:21 AM

Is there anyone who Cybil Shepard likes? How about people who like Cybil Shepard? Her opinion does not matter. I like Alicia Witt and always have. As a former pianist, I was always jealous of her talent.

by Anonymousreply 20July 2, 2024 3:59 AM

[quote] Cybill Shepherd said she was a bitch to work with.

Oh for fuck's sake. Why are you quoting her like her opinion about anyone else matters? She hates everyone.

Cybill Shepherd also said Christine Baranski was a bitch to work with, and the same with Peter Krause, and just about everyone else who worked on that show except maybe Tom Wopat (who was apparently terrified of her and did everything she said).

Cybill Shepherd is a notorious cunt to work with.

by Anonymousreply 21July 2, 2024 4:37 AM

Isn't she a $cieno?

by Anonymousreply 22July 2, 2024 4:41 AM

She’s always interesting in whatever she does; anyone who calls her a bad actress doesn’t “get” her unique style… clearly, she had an unconventional upbringing, compounded by the Cybill sitcom horror show, so I’m glad she’s still working and I will watch anything she’s in. Looking forward to whatever she does next.

by Anonymousreply 23July 2, 2024 4:49 AM

She had a small role as a tech CEO on a later season of Silicon Valley. She was skeletal at that time. I always found her very beautiful and an interesting actress.

by Anonymousreply 24July 2, 2024 5:14 AM

That’s one of those times where you hold a nice funeral and then, after everyone has left, crack the lids and slap them both viciously for being so fucking stupid.

by Anonymousreply 25July 2, 2024 5:19 AM

I always thought she and Bebe Neuwirth should play mother and daughter. They look and especially sound related.

by Anonymousreply 26July 2, 2024 5:22 AM

"Cecil B. DeMented" was not great, but Alicia was very funny playing a porn star.

by Anonymousreply 27July 2, 2024 5:23 AM

R24 here. My mistake. Witt was in House of Lies as a CEO not Silicon Valley. She was skeletal though.

by Anonymousreply 28July 2, 2024 5:26 AM

I remember her as Lara Flynn Boyle's younger piano playing sister in Twin Peaks. They actually brought her back in season 3 where she and Bobby and Shelly's daughter (Amanda Seyfried) were fighting over Kieran Culkin who played a suicidal drug addict.

She also played a corrupt doctor in I Care a Lot where she and Rosamund Pike work together to con elderly people by falsely diagnosing them with dementia and she later gets murdered after putting Dianne Wiest's character in a nursing home after her mob boss son (Peter Dinklage) puts a hit on her.

She's a very talented and underrated niche actress. I hope she makes a full recovery.

by Anonymousreply 29July 2, 2024 6:31 AM

She had a nice part on one episode of ‘walking dead’ .

by Anonymousreply 30July 2, 2024 6:39 AM

Her career is quite varied... I was surprised to see her join the cast of L&O: Criminal Intent, one of Logan's many partners. What was the character's name... Fallacci? She was interesting on the program - somewhat bemused by the cases investigated, kind of flitatious with Chris Noth, and supposedly a street-smart girl of the boroughs.

Like other actresses in the final yeats of L&O: CI, she did not stay long...

by Anonymousreply 31July 2, 2024 9:52 AM

She was funny as Madonna's minion/fan girl in Four Rooms.

by Anonymousreply 32July 2, 2024 12:52 PM

I don’t remember her in Four Rooms

by Anonymousreply 33July 2, 2024 3:51 PM

This shit is still one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard said in a film. Obviously owed to John Waters, but her delivery also makes it

Not true. Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jane Lynch, Cloris Leachman, Eileen Brennan have/had said nice things about working with her.

by Anonymousreply 37July 3, 2024 1:20 AM

The actor who played the gay waiter was a client at the WeHo tanning salon where I worked. I couldn't remember where I "knew" him from. He refused to tell me and this was when the web was in its infancy. When I finally figured it out, he answered a few questions about working on the series. And before I could ask the first one, he said, "Yes. She's a cunt."

by Anonymousreply 38July 3, 2024 1:32 AM

Team Cybill!

by Anonymousreply 39July 3, 2024 3:45 AM

Cybill team.

by Anonymousreply 40July 3, 2024 3:50 AM

She looks like a Lego baby.

by Anonymousreply 41July 3, 2024 4:11 AM

I used to confuse her with Laura Prepon probably because they both have red hair and were acting in sitcoms around the same time. Then she appeared on OITNB and they were so completely different both in acting and demeanor it finally cured me of my confusion.

by Anonymousreply 42July 3, 2024 4:28 AM

Not impressed with OP's clip, anyone can coach a child to quote Shakespeare, they're basically parrots at that age. She has no idea about the meaning behind the words.

by Anonymousreply 43July 3, 2024 4:47 AM

She has some good scene-stealing power. Loved her cameo as the potty-mouthed, party animal daughter of the pro-life family in CITIZEN RUTH. I wish she would've come to Christopher's funeral on THE SOPRANOS; I wonder what she made of his slasher-gangster flick CLEAVER.
