1992: When Elizabeth Montgomery was the co-Grand Marshall of the LA Pride Parade
32 years ago, Elizabeth Montgomery accepted the invitation to be co-Grand Marshall of the LA Pride Parade, with her friend and former 'Bewitched' costar Dick Sargent, who had recently come out as gay. On the morning of June 28, 1993 - the day of the parade - her personal hairdresser arrived at her house to do her hair and make-up. When he went upstairs to her bedroom, he saw Liz with her head down into the palms of her hands, crying uncontrollably on the side of the bed. He asked what was wrong, and she told him she had just found out that her mother died a few hours earlier.
He went over to sit on the bed next to her, to comfort the 59 year old actress, and told her she didn't have to attend the parade - they would understand. She told him she couldn't drop out; she had committed to her friend Dick Sargent and had committed to her fans in the community. She had to do it.
He ended up doing her hair and make-up, and helped her pick out her clothes for the day. Yet she still couldn't stop crying, and her eye make-up kept smudging. She didn't want her fans seeing her like that. Her hairdresser then went over to her collection of sunglasses, and picked out a pair of glasses that would cover all her eyes. "This is what you'll do today", he said. He instructed her to wear her sunglasses all day, even if she went inside. As the day went on, she never took her sunglasses off. There was a record number of attendees that day, mostly 'Bewitched' fans who wanted to see their favorite two stars. She didn't disappoint. To this day, many people still post pictures on social media of the photos they took with her that day, or the autograph they got from her that day. No one knew about her heartbreak of losing her mother.
Sad to say, Montgomery herself died at 62, less than three years after her mother died.

"a pair of sunglasses that would cover all her eyes."
So how many eyes did she have total?

By all accounts she was a lovely human and loved us gay boys beautifully.

I was there. There crowds cheered on Elizabeth and her 'Bewitched' co-star, Dick Sargent.

Elizabeth Montgomery was never awarded am Emmy. If anybody deserved one for lifetime achievement, it was her. Disgraceful!!!

It must have been incredibly difficult for her that day, class act

Elizabeth made a lot of great TV movies, too. Lizzie Borden stands out, but I also love The Victim.
And "Between Darkness & The Dawn" is absurd but entertaining.
I am surprised she didn't win an Emmy during her career.

Where did you get this story from, OP? (Also, legend has it that when asked why she accepted the role of grand marshal she said, "I did it for the love of Dick.")

Too bad it was the real Derwood with her.

She must have been nominated for multiple Emmys.

Montgomery was nominated for multiple Emmys during her run on 'Bewitched', but lost out to Lucy just about every time (I think she lost out to Mary Tyler Moore in 1970).
R15 It was on Facebook a few days ago - showed up on my feed, her hairdresser posted it. (Not sure how it got on my feed or why).
FUN TRIVIA - aside from Carol Burnett, Montgomery was also best friends with actress Liz Sheridan (best known as 'Helen', Jerry's mother on 'Seinfeld'). The three of them met each other in the 50s when they were auditioning for jobs on Broadway, early in their career. Sheridan was known as 'Dizzy' , a nickname she had since she was a child. Montgomery then took on the nickname 'Lizzie' - so the two of them would be known as 'Dizzy and Lizzie' among their friends on Broadway.

Interesting to note that FETV and Antenna TV both show "Bewitched" for one hour every weekday at 12pm ET. Well, FETV just started over today with season 1 while Antenna is currently on season 7, so you can see Liz with Dick York in black-and-white on one channel and simultaneously in color with Dick Sargent six years later on another.

Not specifically about Elizabeth, more broadly about the gay appeal of Bewitched, with a lovely bit about Dick and Elizabeth at the parade.
Maybe the gayest thing about it: The show always made sure we knew Samantha and her family were wonderful people, and it was old Derwood that was wrong.

She really had charisma and star power. I don't know anyone who doesn't at least like her. Most people really love her.

Liz was a great TV star. And stunningly beautiful in her day. But great actress? Hmmm, I can't really get there with ya.

She was good actress. Very entertaining and easy to watch. Especially compared to the trash that is in front of the camera today.

The problem with Elizabeth is that she was so exposed in Bewitched. That's what TV does to an actor. She tried to break away from typecasting but could only get made for TV movies.

R31 fair enough. She was enormously appealing, that's for sure. TV stars back then had a certain quality- you had to enjoy having them "in" your home week after week. Another on with that quality was James Garner.
In any case, I certainly loved her and all the Bewitched relatives, co-workers and neighbors.

She herself said she wasn't ambitious enough to try to break into movies. She said she never had to have the hunger in her belly. She was really good in some good in a lot of material. I especially loved her in Belle Star fron 1980

I liked the TV.movie where she was a pilgrim and co-starred with her husband.

She should have stopped Bewitched once Dick York was no longer able to do it full time. But I guess the money was too tempting.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | July 11, 2024 3:52 AM

yeah they gave her money that was unheard of at the time. They even wanted to keep going further than what she gave them. Plus she owns part of the show which made her a fortune. Thus her money from her family and her bewtiched dollars she didn't have that ambition to try to be in Kramer vs. Kramer.

I've seen her in a few TV appearances she did before Bewitched. I saw two Burke's Law episodes recently. She is good but you can tell that she is more suited to TV. Or maybe that's just hindsight.

Dick Sargent's real name was Richard Stanford Cox.
Since he was gay, he should have gone with the name Dick Cox.

She was probably too old to make the leap from tv to movies when Bewitched ended. It was easier for men but the few women like Goldie Hawn and Sally Field were younger when they made the transition. She was good as Lizzie Borden, but not in the same class as a good movie actress. She was a friend of Bette Davis and that was a part Davis could have played in her heyday and done much better.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | July 11, 2024 12:27 PM

Yeah. I can see Bette with a cigarrette dangling from her mouth while she's giving her father and step mother so good healthy, yankee whacks with a hatchet. Non stop bitching while she's doing it. "buckle up. it's gonna be a bloody night."
by Anonymous | reply 45 | July 11, 2024 4:27 PM

Maybe not as Lizzie Borden, but there was always something very appealing about Elizabeth Montgomery that came through in most of her roles, and certainly as Samantha.
