Anyone else seen this? It's a comic and thoughtful, very realistic portrait of a mother/child relationship and the somewhat transitional people coming in and out of the mom's life. So much of the dialogue and action are true to the way people really behave. I loved how you are aware what the mother went through to get where she is in life, and yet she is still unformed and changing and winging it because she is human.
There's a short conversation where the daughter wonders about her sexuality and the mother's response is so interesting and truthful. I love performances where you see an actor's thought process working behind the eyes and face, and this is definitely what this actress achieves in the whole film. Elias Koteas' character is wonderfully played in that you're not sure what to think. Is he the benevolent hippy/new age daddy or a full-of-himself minor cult leader?
Very well written and directed- see this if you have enjoyed Kelly Reichardt and Ira Sachs movies.
