CNN’s Van Jones, On Verge of Tears, Says Biden Should Be Replaced: ‘If He Will Let Us’

I love that guy as a good man. He loves his country. He’s doing the best that he can. But he had a test to meet tonight. To restore confidence, of the country and of the base and he failed to do that. And I think there’s a lot of people who are going to want to see him consider, taking a different course now.

We’re still far from our convention, and there is time for this party to figure out a different way forward, if he will allow us to do that. But that was, not what we needed from Joe Biden. And it’s personally painful for a lot of people. It’s not just panic. It’s pain of what we saw tonight.

Former Trump official Alyssa Farah Griffin spoke next and drove the point home, “And if I may just add to that, I think Joe Biden lost in the first three minutes. I think a lot of voters probably tuned out, and millions of people are having conversations with their families, with their friends, of if the president is up to the task and if he should step aside. And I’m someone who believes the former president is a threat to democracy, I think he is a threat to the America as we know it. He wants to fundamentally change our institutions. He has laid out what his plan is. I am not confident that that is the man to take him on. You cannot tell me democracy is on the line and then give that performance tonight. If based on that, in 18 weeks Donald Trump will be the president-elect.”

I swear I thought I saw both Biden and Trump had to be seated before the cameras went live, I thought that was deliberate to spare Joe being seen as you describe.

by Anonymousreply 4June 28, 2024 4:02 AM

It was a condition of Trump's team that they stand.

Van Jones is a crier.

by Anonymousreply 6June 28, 2024 4:06 AM

by Anonymousreply 7June 28, 2024 4:07 AM

Poor ill Biden had to lead Joe off the stage after dismal debate.. Unguided I wonder where he would have wound up

by Anonymousreply 8June 28, 2024 4:12 AM

Joe looked like a slack-jawed corpse while Trump spoke. I was worried that a June bug or some other winged insect was going to fly right into his gaping mouth during one of the reaction shots.

by Anonymousreply 9June 28, 2024 5:02 AM

Why has it taken THIS LONG for people to "notice" there's a lot wrong with Biden? It's almost like the media has conspired to keep his condition under wraps, or something! Everything today is captured on video, yet it took this long?

by Anonymousreply 10June 28, 2024 5:05 AM

Oh noes, OP...yet another thread?

At what point do we start calling this elder abuse, though? Serious question.

by Anonymousreply 14June 28, 2024 5:40 AM

Van Jones is telling the truth. It's not anti-Biden or anti-Dems to say Biden was a catastrophe tonight. He just was. Yes, we know the orange menace is full of shit but it wouldn't surprise me if those "undecided" focus on the most obvious aspect of tonight's debate: Joe's devastatingly poor performance.

by Anonymousreply 15June 28, 2024 5:48 AM

Well. I didn't watch and I'm glad.

Can someone please comfort me? Tell me it was THAT bad?

PLEASE?

by Anonymousreply 16June 28, 2024 5:52 AM

I also didn't watch the debate. I just watched the post-debate crying on MSNBC and CNN. Analysis of their body language and voice stress levels would indicate YES, It was THAT bad.

by Anonymousreply 17June 28, 2024 5:56 AM

[quote]Can someone please comfort me? Tell me it was THAT bad?

Trump actually seemed to restrain himself from going as hard on Biden’s cognitive issues as he could have whenever Biden misspoke. I think it was out of fear that Biden will be replaced with a stronger candidate if he’s destroyed on the debate stage. So, yes — it was bad, but it could have been worse?

Very interesting times we live in.

You are uncomfortable with a slower moving candidate due to his age.

While his opponent, who is the same age,is a felon, who has promised to end democracy, he is your guy.

Why is a convict permitted to share the stage with POTUS.

President Biden did more than try his best. He has been tasked with restoring this country's presence on the international stage. He has been tasked with moving this country forward from the chaos wrought by a fascist who was too busy grifting to attend to a crisis. But you don't want to move forward. You want to go back and eat shit from a diaper. Scat Queens. You don't do democracy. You don't understand it. And you want orange permanently installed in the White House for all time. President Biden must step aside. He's, like, so old! Orange? A convict? And the same age as POTUS, must be installed in the White House. Again. Permanently.

This debate was the shitshow we all knew it would be. Trump lied, Biden stumbled.

These debates do little to sway the electorate. There’s no one voting in November that doesn’t know what they’re getting with these two candidates. No one.

The only winners, yet again, are the media outlets who get to make breathless pronouncements about the state of the union and the doom we all face if we don’t do as our corporate overlords advise. Fuck them and this game. VOTE.

by Anonymousreply 42June 28, 2024 11:45 AM

lol. You know how many elections I’ve lived through where the media declares a candidate just destroyed their campaign because of a poor debate?

Americans have the attention span of a gnat. There will be another debate in 2 months.

I don’t watch presidential debates because they’re meaningless. I especially won’t watch a debate with Donald Trump. This is his third go-round and “moderators” let him lie like a motherfucker.. Enough is enough. And I never, ever …ever …watch CNN. I dont watch any “cable news.” It’s as real as wrestling.

And Biden shouldn’t have taken part in debates with Trump anyway. He should’ve said, “Been there, done that.” (I didn’t watch those debates either)

by Anonymousreply 90June 29, 2024 3:05 AM

Ah. r89 In r67's defense, I think he was referring to Australia. Then again, they also don't have nuclear weapons, so who knows what he's on about.

Excuse me, I'm going back to hunt for this elusive, but "ever-present," Biden stutter. So far, I keep coming across a very alert and articulate man who had his wits about him and could string two sentences together. Very frustrating discovery, indeed.

by Anonymousreply 91June 29, 2024 3:05 AM

How interesting that liberal CNN and NYTimes seem so hellbent on getting rid of Biden. As different posters are offering on social media, maybe it’s because their ratings were better and they were more profitable with big-money Trump in the WH—or else, their more radical progressive staff hope for an even more “woke” Dem to seize the Presidency and carry out more extreme leftist agenda? I just don’t get it.

by Anonymousreply 92June 29, 2024 3:08 AM

Biden is not "crumbling".

Obama had a terrible, awful, bad debate and won anyway.

Stop wetting the fucking bed, you spineless coward. The ticket is Biden/Harris. Square your fucking shoulders and get out and vote for them, and for every other Democrat on the ballot, because the threat from the GOP is VERY REAL and it's SO MUCH MORE THAN TRUMP. by Anonymousreply 110June 29, 2024 4:35 PM

by Anonymousreply 118June 29, 2024 5:44 PM

The DNC doesn't "pick".

Voters picked from those who chose to run in the primaries. Biden won overwhelmingly. It wasn't even close.

by Anonymousreply 119June 29, 2024 5:48 PM

Biden should have never agreed to do any debates. All this does is legitimize Trump by pretending that he's a qualified Presidential candidate rather than a convicted felon awaiting sentencing.

by Anonymousreply 120June 29, 2024 5:51 PM

Biden's campaign should be showcasing Kamala Harris more to demonstrate that she's Presidential material. Many people have concerns about whether she's ready for the job if Biden can't complete 4 years.

LBJ withdrew, Hubert Humphry became the Democratic nominee and Nixon/Agnew THE MOST FUCKING CORRUPT REPUBLICAN TICKET IN HISTORY, won in a landslide even with racist George Wallace running as a third party candidate. Baby MAGA won in 1968. LBJ should have not given up. LBJ threw us to the wolves. We have to believe that any replacement at this time will ALSO LOSE TO TRUMP.

Democrats want to avoid the chaos of 1968 and are not expected to pressure Biden into retirement.

Democratic leaders, including House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have no plans to push Biden to drop out of the presidential race despite his recent poor debate performance. They believe Biden can recover and strategize to improve his campaign.

However while Trump's debate performance was deemed better by some polls, it didn't inspire confidence among swing state voters. Independents are coming to Biden after the debate. Most "normal" people didn't watch and this tempest-in-a-tea-pot won affect their votes come November.

It’s fascinating how the Keep Biden crowd is personally attacking just about anyone who is making the extremely warranted and reasonable suggestion that we look for another path before the convention. They’re not answering our questions about how Biden can win or how he can govern credibly given this humiliating performance. No, just attack Van Jones and the New York Times.

by Anonymousreply 212July 1, 2024 1:44 PM

R212, maybe because it’s a completely unreasonable question. I mean, explain to us, in your infinite experience and wisdom with these things, the path forward TO. A. WIN. with another candidate. Go ahead.

by Anonymousreply 213July 1, 2024 1:51 PM

Harris is a handicap. Regardless of what anyone thinks about a black woman, she is unelectable. Simply put, people just don't like her. You can't change that.

by Anonymousreply 214July 1, 2024 1:52 PM

Joe Biden needs to step aside for the good of the country...for the good of democracy. We need a man like Governor Josh Shapiro to get the nomination. I agree with R214. Harris is unelectable as POTUS candidate. And I'll go further...only a man can defeat that racist, sexist, irresponsible, imbecile who is also a convicted felon.

by Anonymousreply 215July 1, 2024 1:56 PM

Biden is unfit and everyone knows that. Trump is unfit and everyone with a brain in the world knows that. Are we supposed to just rally behind old Joe because he's not Trump? That is a tough strategy with the American people FEELING like they are poorer than ever and FEELING like crime/illegal immigration are at dangerous levels. It does not matter what facts and actual data you can show them to prove otherwise. People vote based on how they feel. Biden doesn't stand a chance of winning. He's already lost in the minds of many undecided. The undecided votes are the only ones that matter now.

by Anonymousreply 216July 1, 2024 1:57 PM

[quote]And I'll go further...only a man can defeat that racist, sexist, irresponsible, imbecile who is also a convicted felon.

I agree, this time a man is needed. Keep it simple.

by Anonymousreply 217July 1, 2024 1:58 PM

[quote]That is a tough strategy with the American people FEELING like they are poorer than ever and FEELING like crime/illegal immigration are at dangerous levels.

I know a lot of people in the working-class, and especially the Black community, are beyond pissed at the fact that migrants were getting prepaid cards for food and supplies. This especially stung that it was pushed through so quickly while actual struggling Americans are still waiting for their DHS applications to be approved or going through appeals over some bullshit. Yes, these decisions are mainly on state and city government levels. But most people see one party behind certain choices, and if the president happens to belong to that party, the president is seen as guilty by association to the average American.

That is how Biden, and Democrats as a whole, are losing a lot of the Black vote. Dems are fully conscious of the fact that such assistance programs are disproportionately needed in the Black community. They run their campaigns on this very issue. To then turn around and do something like this is a slap in the face and was, to me, political suicide.

r218 i'm homeless in california making nearly 2k a week and don't qualify for assistance of any kind. it doesn't bother me because the party that's helping them is trying to help me too. republicans are less obstructive to democratic policy they think will be unpopular. the last thing they want is for poor whites to be helped.

by Anonymousreply 223July 1, 2024 10:49 PM

r223 It should bother you because non-citizens, under no circumstances, should receive assistance before American citizens. That 2k per week check is lighter because of the taxes you pay. These people don't pay taxes. It's out of order and unacceptable.

by Anonymousreply 224July 1, 2024 10:53 PM

R224 as far as I know they're the most tax positive demographic in the country because they contribute to payroll and sales tax but never get social security

by Anonymousreply 225July 1, 2024 10:54 PM

r225 The migrants coming in are not contributing to payroll and sales tax. And how do you not know that food purchased with SNAP benefits is sales tax exempt? The migrants coming in aren't working and the government food assistance they receive allows them to purchase food without paying sales tax. Can you read up on how SNAP benefits function in this country, please? I mean...damn, man.

You answered your own question, YES. MAGA is going to rally behind Trump at 100% full speed ahead no matter what. Even if you found a drema replacement for Biden, it would not change MAGA by a single vote. And Dems never back their own candidate 100% like Repugs do. So the answer is YES, at this point and time in history, Dems need to vote for Joe Biden no matter what. Or get used to saying President Trump for 4 more years and goodby to the Supreme court for another 40 years.

My condo fee has gone up $200 a month in 6 years. Because the services included in the fee have gone up so much in price. A kind of Cabot's cheese I used to buy for $5.99 around 3 years ago is now $8.99 - I can't afford to buy it any more. I'm sure it will soon be $9.99.

Looking at the online ad for the exact same package from the same store, tonight it's $5.99. Similarly a 2 liter pepsi that cost $1.25 under Trump from the same store now is $2,99. It's like that across the board.

by Anonymousreply 273July 4, 2024 3:01 AM

Wow that's fascinating R273! I was going through my files and I found an old pay stub where I was making $1,540 per week and now it's $2,500. My how things change under Biden.

by Anonymousreply 274July 4, 2024 6:41 AM

This is exactly why the Democrats are bleeding voters. People say they can't make ends meet due to rampant inflation and they respond with some variation on "suck it up, buttercup."

The Democrats used to be the party that championed the working class. Now they are at least as elitist as the Republicans used to be, and Republicans are the ones saying "we care about you and want you to have a good life, and have a plan to give you that life." They don't have any intention of following through, of course. But they're at least pretending to care, which Democrats these days seemingly can't be bothered to do.

by Anonymousreply 276July 4, 2024 7:13 AM

Wow, that went right over your head R276. It was a snark on how clueless it is for someone to point out that prices went up and blame it on Biden when it's a GLOBAL event. What are you implying by pointing out things used to be cheaper? We all know that....other than to assign blame on the current president which is wrong. He's actually minimized the effects of global inflation more than any other country.

So R275 would rather be lied to, instead of facing the harsh reality. Got it.

by Anonymousreply 278July 4, 2024 9:48 AM

Why should the harsh reality be that Democrats don't give a shit anymore about people who are struggling financially?

Republicans these days are telling these people that they care about them and will help them. Democrats are telling them that they are to feel that they are barely keeping their heads above water. They quote statistics that supposedly prove that they are actually doing just fine. They shrug and say "guess you should have gotten a degree/a degree in something that actually matters." They call them deplorable.

In their place, who would YOU vote for? The party that pays you lip service and allows you to hope, or the party that tells you to sit down and shut the fuck up?

by Anonymousreply 279July 4, 2024 10:48 AM

by Anonymousreply 280July 4, 2024 10:53 AM

You are putting worlds in the Democrats mouth. Dems are for the people, Joe Biden always says himself you grow the economy from the middle out not form the top down. That's not a message the Republicans ever say. Joe was the first president to join a union picket line to help workers demand more pay from private companies. Get the F out of here with your Dems are shaming people bullshit.
