Chuck Todd Says Biden Team ‘Went Out of Their Way’ to Craft Debate That Helps Trump ‘Seem Presidential’

NBC News chief political analyst Chuck Todd accused President Joe Biden’s team of agreeing to a debate forum that will help former President Donald Trump seem “more presidential.”

Todd joined Chris Jansing on MSNBC on Wednesday ahead of CNN’s Thursday debate, and the political analyst questioned Biden’s strategy going into the matchup.

“They so want to have a different experience than the last debate they had with him… and ironically it’s the single best debate Biden had,” Todd said, referring to Trump and Biden’s debate in Oct. 2020.

The former Meet the Press moderator argued the last debate between Biden and Trump “cemented” the former’s lead.

Trump, he continued, needs an “instant poll,” meaning a live audience for reactions, when he speaks. The lack of an audience at Thursday’s debate will make him only seem “more presidential,” according to Todd.

The 90-minute debate will be moderated by Jake Tapper and Dana Bash and have no audience. Each candidate will also have their microphones cut when not speaking to avoid interruptions. Todd called the given rules a “real risk” for the president.

Oh Christ, this buffoon. Again. So bad at it that he lost his job moderating MTP, but still working at NBC as a political hack? WTF is wrong with NBC that they'd keep this idiot around?

by Anonymousreply 1June 26, 2024 9:29 PM

I love Chuck Todd. Always have.

by Anonymousreply 2June 26, 2024 9:29 PM

I'm curious why Biden even sought this. He must feel supremely confident he won't look like a confused, stuttering old fool. It will only help Trump, which is why he agreed to the invitation.

by Anonymousreply 3June 26, 2024 9:33 PM

He's a political guru for the ill-informed, R2. Take heed.

by Anonymousreply 4June 26, 2024 9:33 PM

Chuck Todd always came across to me as right-wing.

I recall a C-Span clip that showed Obama saying, "Fuck you, Chuck Todd".

The Youtube clip below is bleeped, but the version I saw (excerpted on John Oliver) was not.

Biden tricked Trump into agreeing to these rules because Trump's performance strength is working the crowd into a frenzy. It was brilliant to get Trump to agree to no audience to feed off of, and it will throw Trump off his game far, far more than it will Biden. When was the last time you saw Trump speaking without a crowd? He even had to stand in front of his sycophants in the NY court when he whined about how he was treated like every other common criminal. (As an aside, they've been worried on Fox about the debate staging without a live audience since it was announced, so it's safe to say that the GQP is worried. And for that matter, probably why Chuckles is flapping his gums today, too.) Meanwhile, take a look at the events that Biden does; he's much more sophisticated, able to communicate more clearly, and gets his points across with little interaction from the audience, but not just that but Biden is better at knowing when to use audience interaction to make his points (see: SOTU addresses). Without the audience, Trump is lost.

Biden is presidential whether in a crowd or alone; Trump is a carnival barker, now without a carnival.

r3: Shush.

by Anonymousreply 7June 26, 2024 9:56 PM

R3 You are an idiot. Dump is going to get extremely agitated when a well prepared Biden lights into him. And cutting him off while talking? It's going to be the melt down of the century. Cool story though.

by Anonymousreply 8June 26, 2024 10:18 PM

What an absolute crock of shit.

by Anonymousreply 9June 26, 2024 10:23 PM

Trump will still flap his jaws mic or no mic. Biden's mic will still pick up his audio and Trump will toss everything at Joe to throw him off his game. Trump isn't planning on playing nice, let's get that right....even if his handlers are trying to coach him that way. Chuck Todd sucks btw.

To act “presidential”, Trump needs to not have an audience. An audience hooting and hollering would throw Trump off his presidential-acting game.

by Anonymousreply 11June 26, 2024 10:32 PM

Jesus. I thought this idiot went away. I do not miss chuck Todd at all on MTP. What an asshole.

by Anonymousreply 12June 26, 2024 10:32 PM

The President, just like Hillary Clinton, are operating with maga as if it is 1988. There is no other side. The other side has been consumed by magats.

by Anonymousreply 13June 26, 2024 10:35 PM

No he isn't, R13. He and his campaign absolutely hammer Trump on Twitter all day long. Chuck Todd is full of shit.

by Anonymousreply 14June 26, 2024 10:37 PM

A debate is not going to change minds.

by Anonymousreply 15June 26, 2024 10:38 PM

Chuck Todd is wrong about everything, always

by Anonymousreply 16June 26, 2024 10:45 PM

Are there legitimate examples of trump ever bring presidential?

by Anonymousreply 17June 26, 2024 11:46 PM

Biden wants to debate Trump, not get into a pay-per-view sparring match with him.

Trump isn’t smart. He doesn’t like to study and prepare. He doesn’t have any real plans or ideas. Without an audience or the ability to turn it into a shouting match, he is stripped of all of the pugilistic qualities that those that like him most like him for.

Biden wants to keep this as presidential as he can because that’s who he is, a qualified President with plans, and not at all what Trump is. Agreeing to anything other than this format only helps Trump because the more like a show it is the more it’s in Trump advantage.

by Anonymousreply 18June 26, 2024 11:59 PM

I have no interest in watching this shitshow

by Anonymousreply 19June 27, 2024 12:09 AM

Chuck Toad also said Hillary was too prepared for the debate.

by Anonymousreply 20June 27, 2024 12:17 AM

Then don't, r19.

by Anonymousreply 21June 27, 2024 12:19 AM

R3 I think it was to prevent any possible chance of a new nominee at the Dem convention and solidify Biden as the one to take on Trump. When the debate was announced the talk had all been about how terrible Biden was polling. Since then the media have become focused on the debate, CNN are constantly talking about it. Biden's team probably know it won't change a lot of votes, especially this far out from the election, but it has successfully killed any talk of replacing him as the nominee.

by Anonymousreply 22June 27, 2024 12:22 AM

Whoever owns Meet the Press must be a Republican - they hire the most middle-ground and defeated moderators who don't know how to stand up to anyone.

It delayed until after the debate the Democrat’s decision on what to do about Biden.

This sounds like a contradiction and makes no sense to me at all.

by Anonymousreply 26June 27, 2024 12:28 AM

Biden vs Trump is big business, and almost every mainstream article is clickbait. Trump is an unhinged fool who has promised to end democracy and he should be covered as he presents himself,, not through the lens of his cognitively damaged supporters. Biden is an extremely competent politician who rescued the economy from the clutches of that orange pustule on the ass of American History. Biden is decent and cares about America and has demonstrated his love of country over and over. He should be covered based on what he has accomplished, not on what brain dead Americans who think inflation is the economy and yelling is strength.

by Anonymousreply 27June 27, 2024 12:41 AM

Please make this arrogant, self-important douche scram off-camera.

by Anonymousreply 28June 27, 2024 1:12 AM

Shut up Chuck Todd. Why do you still have a platform?

by Anonymousreply 29June 27, 2024 1:15 AM

Joe should remind Trump that he lost the last election because he's a loser. That should set him off.

by Anonymousreply 30June 27, 2024 1:21 AM

I would push every one of Trump's buttons.

by Anonymousreply 31June 27, 2024 1:23 AM

How are they going to 'debate' when Trump is unable to have a normal conversation with anyone? Biden needs to concentrate on touting his own accomplishments while Trump sighs and jeers and pottymouths in the background.
