Carly Simon turns 81 today
Carly Simon turns 81 years old today. The "You're So Vain" singer and songwriter had claimed she was born in 1946 for many years, until her birth certificate was discovered with proof she was actually 3 years older than what she was telling the public. So far, Simon has won an Oscar, a Golden Globe and two Grammys in her career. Her last studio album was 2009's "Never Been Gone".
"Why" is the single from the 1982 movie "Soup for One", Simon's attempt at disco. It's a favorite among fans though it didn't do well on the Hot 100 Singles. Niles and Edwards (behind Diana Ross' 1980 megahit album "diana") composed the music and produced the song, while Simon wrote the lyrics. It peaked at #74 in the US, but hit the Top 10 in many other countries.

I really like some of her music. Particularly her soundtrack contributions to both "Heartburn", and "Working Girl", which I hear bits of on at least a weekly basis.
But I never want to hear so much as a fucking peep about "You're So Vain" or its' supposed subject EVER AGAIN...because it was FIFTY-TWO YEARS AGO, AND NO ONE FUCKING CARES.

I thought 1975's Attitude Dancing was an attempt at disco. I love Carly, so many great life memories to her songs.

I’m with R2. I also liked her stuff from the Marvin’s Room soundtrack and her album of standards.

Her soundtrack to the movie "This Is My Life" (a gem of a movie starring Julie Kavner) is outstanding.

My favorite. Carly Simon song.
We don’t know what we’ve got til it’s gone, especially when we’re young.
I also love her Torch album. She and Harry Nilsson were doing standards before that became the fashion.

"Embrace Me, You Child" is my favorite song from No Secrets, though I also still love "You're So Vain." I don't think I'll ever get tired of YSV.

But why was Nobody Does It Better removed from all streaming platforms a few months ago? I don’t understand. The other Bond themes remain. I can’t imagine Carole Bauer Sager and the estate of Marvin Hamlisch are averse to royalties. The rest of Carly’s catalogue remains. I don’t get it.

Because Lainie Kazan 'did it better' just like she did a better rendition of 'Copacabana'. So streaming services put up her version instead.

Her house on Martha’s Vineyard is so cozy and quaint. Unlike a lot of celebrity homes, it has a lived in feel to it.

I got a couple new arrangements of her singing Let the River Run and It Happens Every Day. Recorded recently in some kind of performance (wasn't a big stadium.) It sounded like her and it's nice enough, but age has really changed her voice. It sounded weak, for lack of a better word. A beautiful weak, if it makes any sense. The accommodations for the decline were very noticeable. Let the River Run was a ballad, rather than an anthem.

Fuck James Taylor for being such a hateful dick to her. It's not like your heroin-addicted, cheating ass was such a fucking treat!

The same thing is happening with Lainie Kazan’s version of A View to a Kill, r24. It’s like Duran Duran’s original never existed. There is so much fucking grift and nefarious jostling for hierarchy in the Bond world on streaming platforms, and mysteriously, Lainie Kazan always comes out of top.

Well, I'd venture credit where credit is due, R31. Some day Lainie Kazan will be gone and then it will be too late to give her the praise she deserves for

Me too, r38. That was the song that got me into Carly as a young tween. My mom liked her 70s stuff and I did as well but I really got into her 80s synth-ier stuff. Spoiled Girl was a flop but it’s one of my favorites.

Her gay hubby's auto bio "Lucky Jim " was creepy. Apparently Jim, Carly Simon, Diane Sawyer and Jackie O were all competing to see who could get laid by this coke head bi-sexual hairless Jew. He must have had a monster schlong.

I remember hearing this song played a few times on a local top 40 station back in the early spring of 1964. I never heard the name of the artists who did it, but I remembered enough of the lyrics to google the song many years later. Was I ever surprised to learn that the artists were Carly and Lucy Simon performing as the Simon Sisters.

R13 She didn't go see the total eclipse of the sun in Nova Scotia, she only heard that the person whom she's singing about flew his Lear jet there to see it.

I read way back in Rolling Stone when she was married to James Taylor that she couldn't have window curtains nor shades because he didn't like that. Strange.

Probably didn't need shades and curtains as their home on Martha's Vineyard (it was in his family forever, until they divorced and she got it) is completely hidden and secluded from public view. You have to really know where it is in order to find it - nothing gives it away from street-view.

I love Carly Simon, and it was a dream come true when she came into my store one summer day in 2000 (she was visiting a local radio station that morning, pushing her album 'The Bedroom Tapes'). She was as high as a kite, if not higher.
