Carly Simon turns 81 today

Carly Simon turns 81 years old today. The "You're So Vain" singer and songwriter had claimed she was born in 1946 for many years, until her birth certificate was discovered with proof she was actually 3 years older than what she was telling the public. So far, Simon has won an Oscar, a Golden Globe and two Grammys in her career. Her last studio album was 2009's "Never Been Gone".

"Why" is the single from the 1982 movie "Soup for One", Simon's attempt at disco. It's a favorite among fans though it didn't do well on the Hot 100 Singles. Niles and Edwards (behind Diana Ross' 1980 megahit album "diana") composed the music and produced the song, while Simon wrote the lyrics. It peaked at #74 in the US, but hit the Top 10 in many other countries.

I love Carly and am glad she's still with us.

by Anonymousreply 1June 25, 2024 11:48 PM

I really like some of her music. Particularly her soundtrack contributions to both "Heartburn", and "Working Girl", which I hear bits of on at least a weekly basis.

But I never want to hear so much as a fucking peep about "You're So Vain" or its' supposed subject EVER AGAIN...because it was FIFTY-TWO YEARS AGO, AND NO ONE FUCKING CARES.

by Anonymousreply 2June 25, 2024 11:59 PM

Happy Birthday, Carly.

I thought 1975's Attitude Dancing was an attempt at disco. I love Carly, so many great life memories to her songs.

by Anonymousreply 6June 26, 2024 12:32 AM

It’s hard to believe she’s 81 yrs old.

by Anonymousreply 7June 26, 2024 12:35 AM

Is she still sucking Ben off??

by Anonymousreply 8June 26, 2024 12:35 AM

She still marrying fags?

by Anonymousreply 9June 26, 2024 12:43 AM

I read she’s got the dementia

by Anonymousreply 10June 26, 2024 12:59 AM

I’m with R2. I also liked her stuff from the Marvin’s Room soundtrack and her album of standards.

by Anonymousreply 11June 26, 2024 1:00 AM

Her soundtrack to the movie "This Is My Life" (a gem of a movie starring Julie Kavner) is outstanding.

by Anonymousreply 12June 26, 2024 1:16 AM

She went to Nova Scotia to see the total eclipse of the sun. Mode of transport not listed.

by Anonymousreply 13June 26, 2024 1:22 AM

What's on her children's iPod?

r12 "Love of My Life," from This Is My Life, one of my Carly favorites.

Lame song love of my life

by Anonymousreply 16June 26, 2024 3:27 AM

I remember I did that one song and sampled her. Something about “clouds in my coffee”.

by Anonymousreply 17June 26, 2024 3:27 AM

My favorite. Carly Simon song.

We don’t know what we’ve got til it’s gone, especially when we’re young.

I also love her Torch album. She and Harry Nilsson were doing standards before that became the fashion.

Eat a steaming bowl of shit stew r10. You're a pathetic liar.

by Anonymousreply 19June 26, 2024 3:39 AM

Carly had some fine, fine cock in her day.

by Anonymousreply 20June 26, 2024 3:43 AM

"Embrace Me, You Child" is my favorite song from No Secrets, though I also still love "You're So Vain." I don't think I'll ever get tired of YSV.

Who?

by Anonymousreply 22June 26, 2024 4:22 AM

But why was Nobody Does It Better removed from all streaming platforms a few months ago? I don’t understand. The other Bond themes remain. I can’t imagine Carole Bauer Sager and the estate of Marvin Hamlisch are averse to royalties. The rest of Carly’s catalogue remains. I don’t get it.

by Anonymousreply 23June 26, 2024 8:40 AM

Because Lainie Kazan 'did it better' just like she did a better rendition of 'Copacabana'. So streaming services put up her version instead.

by Anonymousreply 24June 26, 2024 11:47 AM

Have You Seen Me Lately is an underrated Carly album

by Anonymousreply 25June 26, 2024 12:22 PM

Her house on Martha’s Vineyard is so cozy and quaint. Unlike a lot of celebrity homes, it has a lived in feel to it.

by Anonymousreply 26June 26, 2024 12:26 PM

I got a couple new arrangements of her singing Let the River Run and It Happens Every Day. Recorded recently in some kind of performance (wasn't a big stadium.) It sounded like her and it's nice enough, but age has really changed her voice. It sounded weak, for lack of a better word. A beautiful weak, if it makes any sense. The accommodations for the decline were very noticeable. Let the River Run was a ballad, rather than an anthem.

by Anonymousreply 27June 26, 2024 12:32 PM

Fuck James Taylor for being such a hateful dick to her. It's not like your heroin-addicted, cheating ass was such a fucking treat!

by Anonymousreply 28June 26, 2024 12:33 PM

The same thing is happening with Lainie Kazan’s version of A View to a Kill, r24. It’s like Duran Duran’s original never existed. There is so much fucking grift and nefarious jostling for hierarchy in the Bond world on streaming platforms, and mysteriously, Lainie Kazan always comes out of top.

by Anonymousreply 29June 26, 2024 12:34 PM

R28, it wasn’t his ass that was the treat.

What in God's name is going on with the Lainie Kazan troll lately??

by Anonymousreply 31June 26, 2024 12:59 PM

Well, I'd venture credit where credit is due, R31. Some day Lainie Kazan will be gone and then it will be too late to give her the praise she deserves for

by Anonymousreply 32June 26, 2024 2:21 PM

"And stay right here 'cause these are the good old days"

Love her.

Me too, r38. That was the song that got me into Carly as a young tween. My mom liked her 70s stuff and I did as well but I really got into her 80s synth-ier stuff. Spoiled Girl was a flop but it’s one of my favorites.

by Anonymousreply 40June 26, 2024 8:19 PM

I love “Why?”

Had never heard of it until a few years ago.

by Anonymousreply 41June 26, 2024 8:31 PM

"Letters Never Sent" is my favorite album of hers, followed by "Spoiled Girl".

Her gay hubby's auto bio "Lucky Jim " was creepy. Apparently Jim, Carly Simon, Diane Sawyer and Jackie O were all competing to see who could get laid by this coke head bi-sexual hairless Jew. He must have had a monster schlong.

I remember hearing this song played a few times on a local top 40 station back in the early spring of 1964. I never heard the name of the artists who did it, but I remembered enough of the lyrics to google the song many years later. Was I ever surprised to learn that the artists were Carly and Lucy Simon performing as the Simon Sisters.

R13 She didn't go see the total eclipse of the sun in Nova Scotia, she only heard that the person whom she's singing about flew his Lear jet there to see it.

by Anonymousreply 48June 27, 2024 1:26 AM

So Sally Taylor lives in Canada now?

by Anonymousreply 49June 27, 2024 1:33 AM

I read way back in Rolling Stone when she was married to James Taylor that she couldn't have window curtains nor shades because he didn't like that. Strange.

by Anonymousreply 50June 27, 2024 1:40 AM

Probably didn't need shades and curtains as their home on Martha's Vineyard (it was in his family forever, until they divorced and she got it) is completely hidden and secluded from public view. You have to really know where it is in order to find it - nothing gives it away from street-view.

by Anonymousreply 51June 27, 2024 12:05 PM

She's So Veiny.

by Anonymousreply 52June 27, 2024 12:15 PM

R44 Holy shit, Sally has James Taylor's exact same face.

by Anonymousreply 53June 27, 2024 1:43 PM

R19 Unfortunately I think it’s true - there was a strange video last year someone shared. Sad.

by Anonymousreply 54June 27, 2024 1:59 PM

I love Carly Simon, and it was a dream come true when she came into my store one summer day in 2000 (she was visiting a local radio station that morning, pushing her album 'The Bedroom Tapes'). She was as high as a kite, if not higher.
