The Marilyn statue in Palm Springs

Proof positive that gays, especially many eldergays, are in fact not paragons of great taste but have taste that is as atrocious and tacky as any middle American frau.

by Anonymousreply 65July 26, 2024 6:36 PM

What makes you think the gays are responsible for this statue?

by Anonymousreply 1June 21, 2024 2:11 AM

Many queens in Palm Springs wear flip flops in public.

by Anonymousreply 2June 21, 2024 2:21 AM

R1 Queens of a certain age clutch pearls and defend this hideous fucking atrocity as high art.

by Anonymousreply 3June 21, 2024 3:46 AM

I don’t really understand her appeal, but then again I don’t like anything

by Anonymousreply 4June 21, 2024 3:59 AM

Good luck getting through that very badly-written article.

by Anonymousreply 5June 21, 2024 4:09 AM

That statue embodies the myth of Marilyn as having agency over her sexuality, but the irony was that she struggled against that image and suffered mistreatment by men.

I suppose there’s a type of queen who likes his icons tragic like Marilyn and Judy, or bitchy like Bette and Joan.

by Anonymousreply 6June 21, 2024 7:38 AM

It can be defended as tall art.

by Anonymousreply 7June 21, 2024 7:42 AM

She has nothing to do with Palm Springs.

by Anonymousreply 8June 21, 2024 8:14 AM

[quote] She has nothing to do with Palm Springs.

But sad, fat old eldergays will alll CRYYYYYYYYY if you tell them that. These are the same queens who all have Phantom of the Opera masks on their wall, proclaiming it's ARTTTTT.

Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 9June 21, 2024 1:42 PM

The gays who live and own property in PS, as well as the straights and all others don’t give a rats ass what any of you think or don’t think. You can be sure of that. As for the statue being art or not- no one care about that either.

by Anonymousreply 10June 21, 2024 1:46 PM

Suzanne Somers lived in Palm Springs too, OP.

by Anonymousreply 11June 21, 2024 1:48 PM

R10 you're right. Because they're all flyover trash.

by Anonymousreply 12June 21, 2024 1:49 PM

[quote]Queens of a certain age clutch pearls and defend this hideous fucking atrocity as high art.

Tell me you've never been to Palm Springs without telling me you've never been out of your mother's basement.

by Anonymousreply 13June 21, 2024 2:29 PM

The Marilyn statue is loved by the straights. We homos have another giant installation to.... admire.

by Anonymousreply 14June 21, 2024 2:33 PM

It's tacky and belongs in Disneyland. Marilyn deserves more respect that that oversized garnish cartoon.

by Anonymousreply 15June 21, 2024 3:16 PM

[quote]She has nothing to do with Palm Springs.

She met William Morris agent and lover Jonny Hyde at the Racquet Club's swimming pool. He's the one who got her first contract at Fox and her part in All About Eve. The rest is history.

I mean, next they'll put a fucking Bob's Big Boy statue up, too.

by Anonymousreply 17June 21, 2024 3:53 PM

Can’t believe anyone has the nerve to pretend this statue isn’t the result of Palm Spring gays.

by Anonymousreply 18June 21, 2024 3:56 PM

I had sex on the floor at Dorothy Lamour's old house in Palm Springs. Is that considered tacky?

by Anonymousreply 19June 21, 2024 4:01 PM

A lot of homophobic cunts here trying to chop up gay people by presumed categories:

I wonder what their motives possibly could be.....

by Anonymousreply 20June 21, 2024 4:02 PM

All you seething queens wish you could live in Palm Springs.

by Anonymousreply 21June 21, 2024 4:15 PM

[quote] All you seething queens wish you could live in Palm Springs.

Oh yes, please, please, let me live in the middle of nowhere around a bunch of MAGAts and old drunken MARY!s talking about how much better it was in 1978. Drowning in cocktails, poppers and drugs, peppered by random homeless and/or crazy people and the occasional Latino landscaper-slash-escort.

How, how could one possibly resist?

by Anonymousreply 23June 21, 2024 4:23 PM

More intergenerational hate trolling, OP stereotyping gay men on a gay board.

by Anonymousreply 24June 21, 2024 4:26 PM

R24 I'm old, girl. Clutch those pearls any harder and they'll go back into an oyster's cunt.

by Anonymousreply 25June 21, 2024 4:29 PM

[quote] Clutch those pearls any harder and they'll go back into an oyster's cunt.

R25 best line I’ve read on DL all week. Kudos!

by Anonymousreply 26June 21, 2024 4:33 PM

R23 You seem bitter. Thank god a place exists - a mere hour drive from one of the most populated regions of the country - where older gay men of means and functional genitalia can live out the rest of their lives drowning in cocktails, poppers, and drugs while ogling their hot Latino poolboys if they so choose. I've been around and have never met gay men who are more relaxed and content than those in the SoCal desert.

by Anonymousreply 27June 21, 2024 4:50 PM

In 2012 the statue was displayed on Michigan Avenue in Chicago across from the Wrigley Building.

R28 yes, she's been around. It's chipped and damaged and just tacky as fuck. But the bad taste queens all worship that statue as high art, or as some sort of symbol of "carefree" Palm Springs.

by Anonymousreply 29June 21, 2024 5:15 PM

[quote] These are the same queens who all have Phantom of the Opera masks on their wall, proclaiming it's ARTTTTT.

I doubt it.

by Anonymousreply 30June 21, 2024 5:17 PM

People may like the statute. That does’t equate to “worshipping it as high art.” You are really overstating your case.

by Anonymousreply 31June 21, 2024 5:18 PM

It looks like she is airing out.

by Anonymousreply 32June 21, 2024 5:22 PM

If y'all stand under it, can you see her cooter?

by Anonymousreply 33June 21, 2024 5:24 PM

R31 Exactly. I've never heard anyone in these parts mistake it for a Rodin. If anything, it just fits into the pop art aesthetic of the region.

by Anonymousreply 34June 21, 2024 5:26 PM

Your Honor, The Defense would like to enter into evidence drone photos of a million fraubuses 🚌 entering Branson, Missouri every year

by Anonymousreply 35June 21, 2024 5:26 PM

[quote]a mere hour drive from one of the most populated regions of the country.

THREE hours.

by Anonymousreply 36June 21, 2024 5:32 PM

Is OP Boris... I mnean the anti-boomer troll?

by Anonymousreply 37June 21, 2024 5:41 PM

From OP’s article:

[quote] If you want the statue moved and you impugn the statue, you look like a stick-in-the-mud. If you like the statue where it is and you praise the statue, you look like you have bad taste—which is not a crime in Palm Springs but might as well be.

Nobody is claiming the statue should remain because it’s “art.” The museum had nothing to do with it, and wants it moved.

Not sure what “the gays “ have to do with it one way or the other.

by Anonymousreply 38June 21, 2024 5:49 PM

I always wondered, what the hell does that Seven Year Itch Marilyn image have to do with Palm Springs. This has got to be the work of hets.

by Anonymousreply 39June 21, 2024 5:57 PM

It’s not really about the Seven Year Itch or even Marilyn. It’s about Hollywood. Hollywood made Palm Springs.

by Anonymousreply 40June 21, 2024 6:00 PM

R23 demonstrate he knows nothing about Palm Springs or the Coachella Valley… which is good because stupid trolls like him will stay away!

by Anonymousreply 41June 21, 2024 6:01 PM

[quote] Is OP Boris

The nellie prisspots really will call anyone Boris, won't they?

by Anonymousreply 42June 21, 2024 6:16 PM

Oh dear!

by Anonymousreply 43June 21, 2024 9:08 PM

No, r7. It's High Art.

PS also has Sonny Bono and Lucy statues, but on a much smaller scale. And in metal.

by Anonymousreply 46June 22, 2024 2:42 AM

PS has a host of shitty, awful statues.

The Lucy one is almost as ugly as the Scary Lucy one.

There was also a giant fuss about a racist old mayor who had a statue and then when they wanted to move that one or take it down, a whole bunch of elderstraights hissed.

by Anonymousreply 47June 22, 2024 3:38 AM

A "spring noir" dress code???? It's smug and pretentious.

by Anonymousreply 48June 22, 2024 4:25 AM

Next statue for Palm Springs.

by Anonymousreply 50June 22, 2024 5:07 PM

That's why everyone wears caftans there!

by Anonymousreply 51June 22, 2024 5:27 PM

Art major here.

Representational (vs. abstract) sculpture is just hard to get right.

JMO, but even Rodin's The Thinker is not a super-impressive piece of art.

I actually like the Bob's Big Boy sculpture. It is what it is. It's not trying to be something more. AND - it did its job: become something fun, friendly, and recognizable that made you think: "Let's stop here and eat at Bob's Big Boy."

The PS Marilyn piece is like something from a theme park. Was that the goal? I don't know.

by Anonymousreply 52June 22, 2024 6:49 PM

Marilyn should have been Oscar nominated for Bus Stop and The Misfits

by Anonymousreply 59June 23, 2024 6:17 PM

R56 The butthole/sphincter/donut never materialized and has now been cancelled. Back to the drawing board.

by Anonymousreply 60June 25, 2024 11:22 PM

The city council voted to move the statue last night.

So many fat, nellie queens are HISSING this morning with righteous rage.

by Anonymousreply 61July 26, 2024 4:01 PM

One nellie queen in particular is crying and quoted lyrics from "Candle in the Wind"......LMAO

by Anonymousreply 62July 26, 2024 4:50 PM

The city council is over 50% gay.

by Anonymousreply 63July 26, 2024 5:15 PM

R40 nailed it. Most property owners and visitors of all ages and sexuality love it. There are many outdoor sculptures all over Palm Springs- some I like, some not so much. But I love that they are there.

by Anonymousreply 64July 26, 2024 5:20 PM

City council is almost all gay. They're also really bad at their jobs.
