"Rear Window" remains one of Alfred Hitchcock’s best Technicolor blockbusters. The suspense classic combines the thrills of The Man Who Knew Too Much & North by Northwest with the twisted undercurrents of Vertigo. TCM airs the James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Thelma Ritter, Raymond Burr, & Wendell Corey starring classic tonight 6/20 @ 8 p.m./ET. My look at "Rear Window" here:

In many ways his best film, though that’s near impossible to choose.

Stewart looks like Kelly's PeePaw.

They should make a gay porn version.

Also returning to select theaters this August for it's 70th anniversary.

Hitchcock makes his cameo at the 26:12 mark, working on the clock in the songwriter's apartment.

Grace Kelly chasing dumpy Jimmy Stewart. RIGHT.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 20, 2024 10:07 PM |
It's a terrific film and co-stars DL-fave Thelma Ritter. Hitchcock loved Grace Kelly and the camera work shows her beautifully in every. single. frame.
I love how you feel you know the neighbors without every entering their apartments or hearing extensive dialogue.
And how cool is it that Raymond Burr, Perry Mason, is the man Jimmy, Grace and Thelma suspect of murdering his wife.

The dog had it coming.

Did anyone see the remake with Christopher Reeve and Daryl Hannah?

I’m in the minority but I find this overrated. Way too talky
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 20, 2024 10:45 PM |
I like talky movies. Maybe that's why I like soaps so much, too.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 20, 2024 10:47 PM |
My personal favorite Hitchcock film. It's just perfect from start to finish.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 20, 2024 10:47 PM |
Probably my favorite Hitchcock film. It captured the excitement, the claustrophobia, and the sometimes horror of city life.
Grace Kelly was terrific in it. I loved her giddy enthusiasm about walking right into mischief and danger.
And I'm glad Miss Lonelyhearts finally found her soulmate.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 20, 2024 10:51 PM |
Wendell Corey = eyebrowless sexist
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 20, 2024 10:57 PM |
Miss Lonelyhearts role in this won her a plum part in “The Tingler”.

Two very different roles, r17.

Don’t be DUMM, he’s not still riveting it. It was completely BUILT and released in theaters over 20 years ago!!!

[quote]It was completely BUILT
Actually, r20, to get the height needed for the apartment building, they had to build it up from basement level of the sound stage.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 20, 2024 11:17 PM |
Agreed that it is a perfect movie, never in my top tier Hitchcock for some reason, but it is flawless.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 20, 2024 11:19 PM |
I like the atmosphere in Jefferies' apartment. I like how friendly but cool, yet chic, Fremont is. The two characters relate in perverted sexually frustrated ways but I don't feel filthy watching them.

Thel set itself was a masterpiece, and was truly key to the film's success.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | June 21, 2024 12:14 AM |
Gregory Peck would have been much more suitable as the lead in this film. Younger and sexier than Stewart.

[quote] I’m in the minority but I find this overrated
Agree. I always found it to be very overrated and downright boring. It’s not as fun to watch as Notorious, Shadow of Doubt, Vertigo, The Birds or Psycho. Hell, I even find Marnie to be more interesting than Rear Window.
Maybe if the movie had different leads I’d appreciate it more. I was never fond of Jimmy Stewart or Grace Kelly.

Idiots.

For those with any interest in special Hitchcock presentations, a newly restored North by Northwest is beginning to make the rounds in 70mm prints as does a brand new 70mm print of Vertigo.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 21, 2024 12:33 AM |
I will be seeing this in the Fathom Events release, with my sisters who've never seen it. We're in for a Hitchcockian treat.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 21, 2024 12:39 AM |
I saw Rear Window when it was first restored and shown in theaters and it WAS still riveting. And I loved the audiences reactions, like Grace's first huge close up and Stewart, Kelly, and Ritter trying to get the goods on Burr. "Miss Lonelyhearts was also the previous tenant to Joan Crawford in "Female on the Beach." And Elizabeth Taylor's mother in "Giant."

I just watched North by Northwest on Tubi, loved it. Love James Mason.

Edith Head. Grace Kelly’s wardrobe is perfect in this movie! -t

Love it. I am always fascinated with the apartments complex set, quirky neighbors all going about their lives’ business, cinematography, color, and Grace’s fashion fabulousness too. ♥️
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 21, 2024 1:08 AM |
I enjoyed last nights showing of Mahogany more than this.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 21, 2024 1:10 AM |
The fashion moment occurs at the end, curled up on the couch, reading a magazine while wearing dark blue denim with penny loafers. Chic.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | June 21, 2024 1:20 AM |
I like everything about this movie except for L.B. Jeffries and his detective friend's unpleasant, practically nasty remarks. I especially love Thelma Ritter's fascinated ghoulishness, the Miss Lonelyhearts storyline, Raymond Burr's sudden stare and the fun of peeking into all the neighbours' lives without having to feel guilty.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | June 21, 2024 1:24 AM |
And it is rumored that Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly had an affair during Rear Window.
“His wife Gloria is naturally said to have been threatened of such glamorous female stars, given her red-blooded husband’s past. Her fears were not entirely misplaced. Having embarked on brief affairs with her previous two co-stars, Grace Kelly was also romantically involved with Stewart on the set of Rear Window“

There was a recent thread about Grace Kelly and RW was discussed at length. Lots of arguing amongst posters re: how old an unattractive J. Stewart was.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | June 21, 2024 1:51 AM |
He's Carol Burnett's main heart throb and was definitely a ladies man. So he definitely had an appeal for some.

Best laugh I had today, R39.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | June 21, 2024 2:15 AM |
I've watched this recently, it's on a lot. But they never seem to put Mildred Pierce on and the other one I love, The Heiress. God I love The Heiress! "Bolt the door, Mariah!"
by Anonymous | reply 43 | June 21, 2024 2:34 AM |
Yeah, R41, Carol Burnett.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 21, 2024 2:36 AM |
The movie channel I get has Mildred Pierce on fairly often and Daisy Kenyon.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | June 21, 2024 2:37 AM |
Co-starring Raymond Burr, the most surprisingly gay man who ever lived!
by Anonymous | reply 46 | June 21, 2024 2:40 AM |
Hitchcock was the best but the studio heads wouldn't let Hitchcock end Suspicion the way he had planned. At the end when Cary Grant was walking up the staircase with a glass of milk for Joan Fontaine, it was supposed to have poison in it. They said no, people won't like it. I would!
by Anonymous | reply 48 | June 21, 2024 2:55 AM |
I just watched Suspicion too. Not a favorite. I hated Joan Fontaine and her characters obsession with chairs, I wanted Archibald Leech to finish her off!
by Anonymous | reply 49 | June 21, 2024 2:59 AM |
North by Northwest is the Hitch classic that TCM runs frequently. And Mildred Pierce and Double Indemnity seem to air on TCM practically monthly...

There was a recent thread on Reddit from someone who just saw Rear Window in a theater, and most of the audience laughed derisively at it throughout. It's sad to think that all these classic films could lose relevance with audiences in the future.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | June 21, 2024 3:12 AM |
I haven't seen Strangers on a Train in a while, hopefully TCM will show that soon. Robert Walker was excellent in it.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | June 21, 2024 3:17 AM |
Watching Rear Window gives me the feeling I'm looking at a painting come to life. Because its all in the one space, it's an example of structural cinema and the fun and brilliance is the way Hitchcock creates a long fascinating entertaining and beautiful movie in the play of everything he can do despite being in that one space.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | June 21, 2024 8:48 AM |
It was just on a few days ago, R53. You must keep up with the schedule.
