I liked him a lot in The Blackboard Jungle even if he was around 30 and supposed to be in high school. Good interactions with Glenn Ford. Funny how he had that Caribbean accent but no one seemed to notice at the time when he was playing an inner city youth.

He was also good in a not very good movie with Clark Gable and Yvonne DeCarlo - can't think of the name just now. Band of Angels?

A bad Poitier performance is still better than most everyone working today

Poitier was in The Jackal, a 1997 remake of The Day of the Jackal. Eric Porter was in the origina.

Were there any bad Poitier performances?

by Anonymousreply 8June 20, 2024 2:42 AM

R8 I don't think so

The performance he gave as a loyal, devoted husband to his wife during the 1960s was one of this best.

He wasn't very good. Three notes, no characterization.

R11 have you seen To Sir, With Love? or A Raisin in the Sun?

by Anonymousreply 12June 20, 2024 3:39 AM

🎶How can you thank someone, who’s taken you from crayons to perfume?🎶It isn’t easy, but I’ll try-ay-ay-ay🎶

To Sir, with love 🙏🙏🙏

"Lilies of the Field" was funnier than I expected. Most of the humor was pretty corny, but Poitier did what he could with it and was charming.

by Anonymousreply 14June 20, 2024 4:44 AM

A Raisin in the Sun is underrated

by Anonymousreply 15June 20, 2024 5:10 AM

OP, give it a rest.

by Anonymousreply 16June 20, 2024 5:13 AM

R5, yes it was Band of Angels. He was very good in that. But it wasn’t a good movie, it was as if he’d dropped in from a higher acting ability realm.

I didn't like him at all in RAISIN IN THE SUN.

Too stagey and shouty and over-the-top.

He stood out like a sore thumb, because everyone else acted naturally.

I love "A Patch of Blue," but his performance isn't anything special, mostly because the part is so small and pedestrian.

But it's a great movie. Watch it if you can.

R19 Sorry. Poitier was the male lead in the film, his part wasn't small. And it wouldn't be a great movie if the male lead wasn't also great, since it's an intimate character study. You seem to be saying that in spite of Poitier being nothing special, it's a great movie. That can't be.
