'Lady in the Lake' noir thriller miniseries

With Portman, Moses Ingram, DL fave David Corenswet. Looks intense.

[quote]Series takes place in 60s Baltimore, where an unsolved murder pushes housewife and mother, Maddie Schwartz, to reinvent her life as an investigative journalist and sets her on a collision course with Cleo Sherwood, a hard-working woman juggling motherhood, many jobs and a passionate commitment to advancing Baltimore's Black progressive agenda.

Seven episodes, starts July 19.

R2: so is it worth a look?

Yes! Omg, this is outstanding television – the cinematography, the score, the acting... (I might be a bit biased though because I'm a total slut for seahorses, the most homosexual of all animals.) Portman and Ingram are wonderful. Glad Nyong'o dropped out because I can't imagine her in Ingram's role at all. It's not a light viewing though, but not quite depressing either.

Someone makes the same comment about Portman early on that I've seen on DL last year, i.e. that she doesn't look Jewish at all.

I got sad seeing Jean-Marc Vallée's EP credit, still can't believe he's dead. Glad he got the "in loving memory of" in the end credits.

I have never heard of teaberries before and now I want a teaberry ice cream real bad.

I’m finding it a little dull tbh. Especially the non-Portman parts, which feel like something I’ve seen a million times before.

by Anonymousreply 6July 26, 2024 4:11 PM

I like the non-Portman parts only because Ingram is selling the shit out of that role and the music is so nice. The dream sequences as so well done as well.

But yeah, I'm enjoying Madeline's liberation in particular and I love the "take me or leave me" attitude she gives to her son, played by Noah Jupe. She is intent on starting a new life and she doesn't give a shit what he thinks about it. I laughed when she suggested that shitty little apartment become his new home, though. And of course he's the son of David Corenswet. Didn't see that coming, but it makes perfect sense, looks-wise.
