Bleh. An overdone period with overdone decor.

Too much formality. It's difficult to imagine having a fun weekend there.

I like Tudors (usually) but this seems to have been Tudor crossed with early Victorian gingerbread.

Yes,over the top-is Sally relocating to Hudson Valley Full Need Nursing Home? How did she ever have a talk show?

I suppose the property fell into disrepair after she ran out of wayward 13-year-olds to send to boot camp.

I'm kind of amazed she ever had that much money.

Back when she left the public eye I got the feeling she worked for one main reason. To make enough money to live like a queen for the rest of her life, in leisure. When she had what she needed she probably said "fuck all this daily grind, I'm out of this bitch", and went off to seclusion.

I think it's an exquisite old home. Can't say I care for much of her choice of decor though.

I like a lot of it including the decor except the circus mural is nightmarish. It doesn’t scream “decorator”, it looks lived in and comfortable. Comes with a lot of land and outbuildings.

I remember one episode of her old talk show with the same old theme “Impossible Teenagers”. One of the guests, a really mouthy “troubled” teen ripped into her tearful mother (both turning it on for the camera). At one point, Raphael interjected some therapeutic suggestion to the daughter (“have you ever possibly considered…”) and the teenager cut her off with “Why the hell should I listen to YOU?!”
SJR snapped back at the teen “…because I will send your ass ACROSS THE ROOM!!”. The producers cut quickly to commercial and I think we never saw that guest after. The next segment began with her typical hausfrau tone “our next guests come to us from…”

The worst part is that Sally lived there tied with the freak show mural. Yikes. 😳

This is not the Hudson Valley. I lived five minutes away from this house, which is on the border of Connecticut. The area is absolutely gorgeous, just beyond commuting to NYC distance. The Hudson Valley is really 30-45 ‘minutes west.
Solidad O’Brien has a house very close by. I also saw Whoopi at a local coffee shop where she appeared to be regular so she must have lived nearby too. The area is filled with hedge fund guys.

That’s little skip over the CT line. Hudson Valley starts roughly at Poughkeepsie, I think.
The house looks like a winery that makes so-so stuff.

I love the Pawling NY area, and the house has some really over the top character.
Sally is/was married to a doctor I believe. She's also a real red wine booze bag, worse than Charlie Rose because she gets LOUD. I saw her in person about 15-20 years ago and the flesh on her hideous face had nearly melted off. She was a total mess!

That house scares me.

Weird mix of staid, kooky, and randomly tacky. Just like our girl, Sally Jesse!

Can DL Detectives tell me if the (odd and disturbing) tower was a later addition?
I’ve seen plenty of Tutors in my time, but the tower seems way out of scale and almost slapped on.

The house that big, red glasses bought. My mom loved her when I was a kid and went out and bought some big glasses like her. My mom rocked those glasses. I'm surprised Sally never sold a line of glasses.

The square tower is ugly. The back side of the house is much more attractive. Oddly, I have seen another Tudor with a square tower in front recently…it might have been on Magpie Murders (PBS).

The troubled teens wing is frequently closed for repair. The husband-abusing furry rooms need deep cleaning.

The exterior is a bit of a muddle with that tower that R27 and R29 mention, that looks like an afterthought that's been stuck on later, but the back is much better, far more cohesive.
I love most of the interiors, especially that upstairs bedroom with the green patterned wallpaper and the room with all the stained glass. The room with the weird murals I dont like but that'd be a simple repaint job.
Its enormous though - 17 bedrooms, and I'd have no use for the equestrian sections, although I guess those could be made into holiday lets/ Air B+B's which would help offset the $4600 a month property taxes and insurance, that property tax is not unreasonable given the scale of the property.
Its not something I'd want to take on myself though, wonderful as it is, there's just too much of it. I wonder if it could be divisible into multiple residences?

Tudor on the exterior and whatever she could vomit up on the interior.
That's a schizophrenic house if I ever saw one. New money tacky. Not even gauche. Tacky.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 12, 2024 11:24 AM |
She didn’t actually build it, ya know
by Anonymous | reply 37 | June 12, 2024 12:02 PM |
She obviously doesn't give a damn about curb appeal. I would have had that scrub brush, and all those opportunistic trees along the rock wall removed first thing. That frontage makes the whole property look abandoned. For a property like that the street side should be well manicured and kept tidy.

She kept her husband of 58 years at home until he died of complications from Alzheimer's. I think that says a lot about her. She must have had very good in house health care people because keeping someone like that at home until the end would kill most people if they're trying to care for them alone.
