King Charles’ portrait vandalized by activists

Activists from an animal rights group have vandalized the first official portrait of King Charles currently on display in a London gallery. Campaign group Animal Rising posted a video on its social media channels on Tuesday showing two activists using a paint roller to stick two signs over the portrait of the monarch. Members of the public have been free to visit the portrait of the monarch which is on display at the Philip Mould gallery in central London until June 15. The painting, which is the first official portrait of King Charles as monarch, raised eyebrows when it was officially unveiled earlier this year. Artist Jonathon Yeo depicted the king against a background of crimson red brush strokes, sparking mixed reactions.

Activists covered the king’s head with a sign of British cartoon character, Wallace from the “Wallace and Gromit” comedy series. A speech bubble sign was then tacked onto the painting with the following caption: “No cheese Gromit, look at all of this cruelty on RSCPA farms.”

The action was designed to bring attention to the group’s report, released on Sunday, which it described as a “damning investigation” into 45 farms assured by animal welfare charity, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

On its website, Animal Rising describes itself as a non-violent organization, campaigning for an “urgent transition to a sustainable and just plant-based food system,” and says the RSPCA Assured scheme covers up “cruelty on an industrial scale.”

Wallace: Well done, lad. Very, well done!

This is why people can't have anything nice. This isn't protesting, it's vandalism.

by Anonymousreply 3June 11, 2024 2:38 PM

Maybe they should have spelled it "Wallis", just for the ironic aspect alone . . .

by Anonymousreply 4June 11, 2024 2:39 PM

How much do we wanna bet Chuck'n'Cammy paid the "protesters?" I suspect they want a do-over on the portrait. (I certainly would.)

These are spoiled rich brats that have never had to actually work. So they sit around with tremendous guilt living in palaces with servants.

This is a byproduct of that. They should be hung in front of the masses

by Anonymousreply 6June 11, 2024 2:45 PM

Leave it like that, it's an improvement.

by Anonymousreply 7June 11, 2024 2:51 PM

Good for them. The RSPCA deserves all the negative attention it can get -- imagine saying that you're working for animals, raising money for the cause, and then abusing the animals instead.

R5, he loves it. It's to be hung at Buckingham Palace when the public viewings conclude.

by Anonymousreply 9June 11, 2024 3:10 PM

The painting was not damaged. It’s covered by a sheet of plexiglass.

by Anonymousreply 10June 11, 2024 3:36 PM

Vandalism, of art? Groundbreaking.

by Anonymousreply 11June 11, 2024 3:47 PM

We need to allow parents to spank their kids again.

by Anonymousreply 12June 11, 2024 4:11 PM

Believe me, spanking doesn't solve anything, R12.

by Anonymousreply 13June 11, 2024 4:35 PM

R5 - the protesters should have put the Wallace head over Charles' hands. They look like ground beef left out overnight.

by Anonymousreply 14June 11, 2024 5:09 PM

Oh, my 😂, that's just 😂 awful 😂

by Anonymousreply 15June 11, 2024 5:16 PM

A couple clowns. Has ZERO effect.

by Anonymousreply 16June 11, 2024 5:17 PM

Phony pompous-asses.

I'm referring to the "activists."

Charles is pompous and an ass but he's not a phony, poor dear.

by Anonymousreply 17June 11, 2024 5:18 PM

Vast improvement.

by Anonymousreply 18June 11, 2024 5:36 PM

King Charles should knight them for their efforts.
