She originally wanted to be a writer, but ended up becoming a pioneer for civil and animal rights.
Louis B. Mayer rejected her for not being photogenic enough. So, she set her sights on television- where she became the first woman to appear on television and has comforted audiences for over 80 years. First in supporting parts, then as the host of Hollywood on Television, a 5 1/2 hour, 6 day a week live broadcast, where she interviewed actors, politicians, authors, professors, scientists, diplomats, and even animals. The show was so popular, it was simply called The Betty White Show.
After the show ended in 1954, she appeared in show after show; Life with Elizabeth, What's My Line?, Password, Match Game, Pyramid, The Carol Burnett Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Liar's Club, Mama's Family, The Golden Girls, The Wild Thornberry's, Ladies Man, Boston Legal, Hot in Cleveland, and, after an online campaign by fans, Saturday Night Live.
Although television kept her busy, she appeared in a few films- Advise in Consent in 1962, then Lake Placid in 1999, followed by a string of comedies such as Dennis the Menace, Ponyo, and The Proposal.
A lifelong resident of Brentwood, she died peacefully in her home, a few weeks shy of 100. Let's toast the ever lovable Betty White.
