What’s great about the Mississippi River?

I’ve never spent time visiting it - just driving over it.

What are the best cities on its banks?

What interesting flora and fauna inhabit it?

by Anonymousreply 62June 10, 2024 4:36 AM

You need a life.

Don't they take the residents of your home out for walks or something?

by Anonymousreply 1June 8, 2024 1:48 PM

The Nile River - anything to see? I've never visited and have never thought about it at all.

by Anonymousreply 2June 8, 2024 1:57 PM

What's so special about the Mediterranean Sea? People talk about it but I've never much thought about it all. Well?

by Anonymousreply 3June 8, 2024 1:58 PM

I hear a lot about China. It's an oriental country. Anything interesting to know or see?

by Anonymousreply 4June 8, 2024 2:00 PM

I'm baffled by Baffin Bay.

And is Sargasso Sea really wide?

by Anonymousreply 5June 8, 2024 2:01 PM

I've always wanted to visit the Islets of Langerhans.

by Anonymousreply 6June 8, 2024 2:49 PM

by Anonymousreply 7June 8, 2024 2:52 PM

But can you swim in it?

by Anonymousreply 8June 8, 2024 2:53 PM

The Pacific… what’s all fuss, anyway?

by Anonymousreply 9June 8, 2024 3:08 PM

I've seen the moon but never been. Is it really worth the hassle to get there?

by Anonymousreply 10June 8, 2024 3:18 PM

It's full of toxic shit from the rest of the country, and probably LITERALLY actual shit too!

by Anonymousreply 11June 8, 2024 3:27 PM

I have sailed on it a few times when visiting New Orleans. That is always fun.

by Anonymousreply 12June 8, 2024 3:56 PM

St. Louis borders the Mississippi river for 19 miles from north to south. Other than 1/4 of the mile for the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial/Gateway Arch, there isn't a damn thing in the other 18.75 miles worth looking at, unless abandoned warehouses and factories, junk and salvage yards and weed filled empty lots are your thing.

St. Louis turned its back on its riverfront decades ago and has done nothing to change or improve it.

by Anonymousreply 13June 8, 2024 4:10 PM

R2 - I have never seen more watermelons in my life, they must ship those suckers all over the planet.

by Anonymousreply 14June 8, 2024 4:13 PM

Me? Has anyone ever been there?

by Anonymousreply 15June 8, 2024 4:14 PM

R6- Nick Danger has been offering tours I guess.

by Anonymousreply 16June 8, 2024 4:14 PM

Books. Are they good? Have you ever read one? Where can I find them?

by Anonymousreply 17June 8, 2024 4:30 PM

R13 America turned its back on St. Louis in 1905

by Anonymousreply 18June 8, 2024 5:08 PM

R11, lies. Tom Sawyer never mentioned any toxic shit!

by Anonymousreply 19June 8, 2024 5:11 PM

Has Aunt Polly commented yet?

by Anonymousreply 20June 8, 2024 6:24 PM

When I was a kid, we went on a car ferry across the river somewhere, the fucker was so wide there, it was like crossing a large lake, it doesn't feel like your on a river at all. There's no discernable flow. The deepest part is 200 feet deep.

by Anonymousreply 21June 8, 2024 7:10 PM

It just keeps rolling along.

by Anonymousreply 22June 8, 2024 7:13 PM

Home to the world's freshest lobster.

by Anonymousreply 23June 8, 2024 9:04 PM

I'd be interested in what experiences people have had on the multi-day Mississippi steamboat cruises. Interesting? Fun? Or, "Look, Darling--another clump of trees" for five days?

by Anonymousreply 24June 8, 2024 9:35 PM

Yum!

A friend worked a year on a barge that went back and forth between St. Louis and New Orleans. When he came to college, I saw he put on muscle mass. He loved to walk around naked in the dorm. Maybe he could do that on the barge? He had a big cock, large balls and a huge bush and I think he liked to show it all off.

R26 = Josh Hawley

I've crossed it at New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Natchez, Greenville, Memphis, St. Louis, Burlington, and St. Paul/Minneapolis.

by Anonymousreply 29June 8, 2024 11:51 PM

Someone said above what's there other than bushes? Yep just scrub I bet, and this channel shows other unusual places where few people live and why.

Watch it for Geoff, he’s cute.

by Anonymousreply 31June 9, 2024 12:36 AM

It’s big.

by Anonymousreply 32June 9, 2024 12:38 AM

There's a YouTube channel that I stumbled upon a few years ago, with a series videos chronicling a trip down the Mississippi River from Minnesota to New Orleans in a houseboat. I found it really interesting! I had no idea how scenic the landscape was around the upper portions of it (especially in Minnesota). The image I'd had in my mind whenever someone said the name was of the southern Mississippi -- from south of St. Louis maybe? But the upper part is beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 33June 9, 2024 1:20 AM

[quote]It’s big.

And long, don't forget long. Second only to the Missouri.

Geoff took a long time to say people don’t live along the southern Mississippi River because it floods.

by Anonymousreply 36June 9, 2024 1:28 AM

Yes but he was adorable doing it.

by Anonymousreply 37June 9, 2024 1:30 AM

It's just a lot of barge toting and bail lifting.

by Anonymousreply 38June 9, 2024 1:38 AM

I'll tell you about the mighty Mississip... it don't plant taters, it don't plant cotton, it just keeps rollin along.

by Anonymousreply 39June 9, 2024 1:39 AM

I grew up in a small town it passes through. Even though it was only maybe 800 feet across, I loved it.

by Anonymousreply 40June 9, 2024 1:40 AM

It rolls on, OP...

[quote]I'd be interested in what experiences people have had on the multi-day Mississippi steamboat cruises. Interesting? Fun? Or, "Look, Darling--another clump of trees" for five days?

The latter. A friend wanted to give his mom a cruise. She didn't want him to spend money on her but he insisted so she picked the Mississippi. Not only was it boring and cold but the weather sucked.

by Anonymousreply 42June 9, 2024 2:07 AM

I've always thought it was a very uninteresting, muddy river with no real points of interest. Seriously. It would be boring as fuck - and any tour boats would be pumping up any old historical tale along the river just to stop the crushing boredom.

New Orleans is the highlight. That's all you need.

by Anonymousreply 43June 9, 2024 2:21 AM

Well OP, it does just keep rolling along...so there's that!

Mississippi

by Anonymousreply 47June 9, 2024 3:08 AM

I don't see what's so great about it. It never had its picture on bubble gum cards.

by Anonymousreply 48June 9, 2024 3:09 AM

Mrshishippi

by Anonymousreply 49June 9, 2024 3:10 AM

Geoff said it was more like the 13th longest in the world.

by Anonymousreply 50June 9, 2024 3:21 AM

Rivers should be named for the volume of water so the Mississippi is really the Allegheny river.

by Anonymousreply 51June 9, 2024 4:25 AM

At times, the mighty Mississippi can be a vengeful bitch to towns the located along its banks. When she's pissed and restless, your once quaint community will find itself inundated under feet of muddy brown water for weeks.

by Anonymousreply 52June 9, 2024 4:50 AM

R38. Bale!

by Anonymousreply 53June 9, 2024 1:02 PM

Natchez is beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 54June 9, 2024 1:38 PM

Why can’t that river make up its mind about a course and stick to it?

by Anonymousreply 55June 9, 2024 2:55 PM

People on the river are happy to give.

by Anonymousreply 56June 9, 2024 2:59 PM

Geoff said it was 13th biggest by volume. It is 4th by length.

by Anonymousreply 57June 9, 2024 3:00 PM

I look at it every day from my office window. It’s big. It’s there. Not much else to say about it.

by Anonymousreply 58June 9, 2024 3:02 PM

I wouldn't swim in it.

by Anonymousreply 59June 10, 2024 1:31 AM

R39 took my comment.

by Anonymousreply 60June 10, 2024 2:25 AM

R59 not even if three dozen naked men were splashing around, cocks swinging, inviting you for a little dip?

by Anonymousreply 61June 10, 2024 4:29 AM
