Wisconsin dad stops daughter from shaking Black School Superintendent's hand

A white dad rushed the stage and pushed the Black superintendent out of the way so he couldn’t shake his daughter’s hand during her high school graduation yelling ‘I don’t want her touching him.’

The shocking incident took place Friday at Baraboo High School in Wisconsin - the same school that drew national headlines in 2018 when a photo emerged depicting several current and former students doing the Nazi salute.

Graduation footage from last week shows the man, whose identity has not been reported to protect his daughter, coming onto the stage as his daughter shook school officials’ hands.

As she approached Superintendent Rainey Briggs, who is Black and was hired in 2021, the man jumped on stage and grabbed the superintendent by his arm and dragged him away from his daughter.

“That’s my daughter,” the man says, according to footage of the ceremony. “You better get up off me man,” Briggs can be heard saying as the two went off camera.

Baraboo School District spokesperson Hailey Wagner told local outlet WiscNews they have referred a disorderly conduct charge for the man to the Sauk County District Attorney’s Office.

“We would like to emphasize that the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community members is a top priority,” Wagner said in a statement.

No wonder the Republican National Convention is being held in Wisconsin.

[quote] Superintendent gets restraining order against dad who pushed him off stage so he couldn’t shake daughter’s hand

The superintendent, who was pushed away by a father to prevent him from shaking his daughter’s hand during a high school graduation, has filed for a restraining order against the parent.

The shocking moment took place during the Baraboo High School graduation ceremony in Wisconsin on Friday when the father stormed the stage and pushed the superintendent out of the way, yelling, “I don’t want her touching him.”

Footage of the graduation captures last week’s incident, showing the man, whose identity has not been reported to protect his daughter, walking onto the stage as his daughter shook school officials’ hands.

As she approached Superintendent Rainey Briggs, who is Black, the man jumped on stage, grabbed the superintendent by his arm, and dragged him away from his daughter.

“That’s my daughter,” the man says, according to the ceremony footage.

“You better get up off me, man,” Briggs, who was hired in 2021, can be heard replying, as they went out of shot of the camera.

Briggs is now seeking a restraining order against the parent. According to Wisconsin News, a temporary order was filed Monday, with Dane County Circuit Judge Nia Trammell ordering the man to have no contact with Briggs pending a hearing on 14 June.

In the restraining order obtained by WMTV, Briggs wrote that the man “put both of his hands on me to push me out of the way”.

He wrote that the father then said, “You are not going to touch my (expletive) daughter.”

Briggs wrote that he then “created space” and told the parent to “get your hands off me”.

The father “began to push and pry at me, and I again put my hands out”, he added, saying it took place in front of two to three thousand people.

Three Baraboo police officers, including the school resource officer, were part of a group that intervened in the situation, local outlet WiscNews. Officers then escorted the father off the school property.

This has to be MORE than simply racism. I mean...I don't care how racist you are. Who the ENTIRE fuck would do that at their daughter's graduation just because she's about to shake a Black SUPERINTENDENT's hand? Something customary at every graduation ceremony ever.

That's extreme even in today's environment. ALSO? A restraining order?

by Anonymousreply 50June 7, 2024 10:18 AM

I somehow doubt that stories about Dahmer and Gein are what's driving a population boom in Wisconsin.

by Anonymousreply 51June 7, 2024 12:03 PM

If the father thought the superintendent had mistreated his daughter, why did he allow her to go? Did he actually think the superintendent wasn't going to be at the high school graduation? Either way, the father acted out and behaved like an asshole in front of the entire class and their families.

by Anonymousreply 52June 7, 2024 12:31 PM

[quote] Except that other parents said this had nothing to do with race. Apparently the man's daughter was bullied by her classmates, and the superintendent refused to help her.

The superintendent told police that he didn't know who the parent was and hadn't had any previous interaction with the parents or daughter:

During the interview, the report says Dr. Briggs told officers he didn’t know who the parent was until a few days after the incident. He recalled one instance where the parent’s child was disciplined in school, but Dr. Briggs said he had no interaction with them or the parents. Dr. Briggs told officers he “has no idea why (the parent) reached the way he did.”

R34, if his daughter was being bullied, then the principal and vice principal were the ones to blame for not helping her, yet the father has no problem letting her share their hands. He also had no problem humiliating his daughter in front of two thousand plus people, including her friends, instead of letting her enjoy the moment she had been waiting for for four years. Why didn't he give that reason in the moments after his arrest when he had a chance to air his grievance to everyone?

You'd think, since he pre-planned it, he would have thought about the embarrassment to his daughter but apparently, that didn't occur to him until after his arrest.

by Anonymousreply 63June 7, 2024 1:46 PM

[quote] refrained myself from doing so because I juts had this feeling there was more to it, and now here we are. As a rule, people aren't this brazenly racist, especially when the cameras are rolling.

Well this may be true, but as long as the reasons remain so vague, racism might turn out to be the reason. Dad said he and his child don't like the superintendent, but offers absolutely no reason why not, and so who knows? The superintendent says he really has no knowledge of this guy and no idea what is bugging him. Not clear the girl herself actually has a grievance, since we only have Dad's vague comments on this whole thing.

Funny, when I graduated from high school we shook the hand of every official on the stage including those with whom we had disagreements. It's called being a grown-up. Sometimes you have to be cordial to people you don't like and/or respect, and if your — or your father's — feelings are so strong, your only choice is to not attend the ceremony at all or participate in it fully.

R64, you're right, we only have dad's comments that offer little reason to engage in this behavior. The superintendent says he didn't know who this guy was until after the incident, so if there was any interaction between them prior, and it was sufficient to warrant the father charging the stage, the superintendent would have surely known him or at least why the lunatic was approaching him. However, under no circumstances does any prior interaction justify the parent putting his hands on the superintendent. It is only by the grace of the superintendent that the father is not in the hospital.

And it's not exactly shocking that the father and daughter were identified. I clicked on the school's youtube link and went to a few seconds before the 1:09:25 mark and heard them announce her full name including even her middle name just as dear old dad appears to make himself look a fool and embarrass his daughter.

And according to that Xitter link @R65, the situation was that the daughter was the bully in the affair in question and the father was upset that she was held to account. Hardly surprising for someone who fits the description of any random MAGAt... accountability for thee, but not for me or my crotchfruit.

by Anonymousreply 67June 7, 2024 2:15 PM

[quote] he “wanted to prevent Rainey from having the satisfaction of shaking” his child’s hand

I can’t imagine it would have meant that much to him.

by Anonymousreply 68June 7, 2024 2:19 PM

Not only did he humiliate his daughter and ruin her day, but she had now been exposed as a bully. Great job Dad.

by Anonymousreply 69June 7, 2024 2:24 PM

My guess is that she was caught bullying and told she couldn't graduate but after an argument between the administration and the parent, the superintendent was brought in and he had some stern words and took disciplinary actions against the girl... and the father thought it was too harsh for the offense. But in the end, she was allowed to graduate with her peers; the father didn't want her to shake the superintendent's hand because he felt the superintendent was unduly in the position of authority that he is over his daughter.

Pure speculation on my part, but the super probably required the girl to formally apologize to her victims in order to graduate and the father did not like that a black man was telling his daughter what to do. That the father went after the superintendent rather than the principal or others on the stage who were probably more responsible for holding her accountable is telling. When you realize that this is the same school where they had the Nazi saluting issue a few years ago, the pieces start to fit together.

It was a bad look with racist undertones. It spoiled the ceremony for hundreds of kids and parents, and it adds to the school's poor reputation.

Dad is a dumb redneck. Hardly surprising.

On three separate occasions I've been targeted and violently attacked because people either thought or knew I was gay and luckily avoided serious injury but it didn't prevent me from going to work or living my life normally just a little more leary. [quote]R83: I guess it depends on who you believe here but if we take the father's explanation to the police that it had something to do with the previous dislike of the man that really it just feels like this is way overblown.

Yeah, but why would we do that, unless we were looking hard for a way for this to 𝑛𝑜𝑡 be about racism? Racism is the explanation that would have had the most negative consequences, potentially lasting for years. Matt Eddy and the people advising him had about four days to come up with an explanation taking it away from brazen, Klan-style racism, by making it out to be instead a 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 grudge. But this is news to Superintendent Rainey Briggs, who does not recall any prior interaction with Eddy.

IMO, Eddy is an old fashioned, classic white supremacist who, in our current right-wing political climate, thought he could get away with offering an openly racist public slight to a black school official, whom he thought would contaminate his daughter's white purity with a handshake. (See R45.)

And the usual right wing suspects here on the board are attempting to 'Rittenhouse' this whole thing, to excuse it and blow past it.
