Why isn't Alex Newell a bigger star?

He has a voice like no other male singer today.

It's just incredible.

He has already won a Tony on Broadway, but you still don't hear a lot about him.

Alex needs a break out role, so more people can hear him sing.

He has a real gift.

Did Lea shit in Alex's wig when they were on Glee?

by Anonymousreply 3May 28, 2024 12:43 AM

Alex did a great job on Glee.

I loved his performance of "Boogie Shoes."

Such a beautiful voice.

If only he would sing straight without the trendy vocal embellishments. He doesn't need them.

by Anonymousreply 5May 28, 2024 12:56 AM

Okay. I'll bite.

Alex won the Tony playing a female character. I don't think Alex deserved to win (I voted for Justin Cooley), but Alex was having a moment in a sweet show, and power to them.

The challenge: Alex can't realistically play male roles, and Alex isn't particularly attractive as a woman.

The upside: Alex can sing.

But overall, casting options are severely limited and in a brutal industry.

Oh honey, if he gets any bigger, he will be mistaken for a planet instead of a star. The only hit he needs is off an Ozempic pen…..

by Anonymousreply 7May 28, 2024 6:40 AM

Good question, OP. I wonder why they/she/he hasn't taken off? Their/her/his male voice is unique and wonderful! What could it be? I have seen them/her/him in concert and that man can sing their/her/his big black ass off. And they/she/he is touring this year.

This performance was from last year, and Alex did indeed gain weight.

He needs to get it under control, because it's not healthy.

Alex was in "Shucked," and his singing was amazing.

And believe it or not, I thought he was convincing as a woman.

R1: Thanks. I was there at Jordan Hall for that performance.

Here's a Rogers and Hart song from the same show.

The answer to the question is fairly obvious and appears to be bait to start an endless argument.

They should make a Sylvester movie.

R12 are you in the Boston Gay Men's Chorus??

How cool!

I want to join one in my city, but I'm so nervous!

How hard is the audition?

by Anonymousreply 17May 28, 2024 5:03 PM

R17 I was in the audience.

Here's a link to Boston's audition process.

Alex would have to lose a good 100 lbs to even come close to Sylvester.

by Anonymousreply 19May 28, 2024 5:12 PM

"Boogie Shoes" for the win. That was really fun and almost made me miss Glee (at least for two-plus minutes).

by Anonymousreply 20May 28, 2024 6:35 PM

Alex was terrific in Zoey's Incredible Playlist or whatever the name of it was. Stole every scene he was in.

by Anonymousreply 21May 28, 2024 7:32 PM

R5 the trendy vocal embellishments that have been around since the 80s? Lol

by Anonymousreply 22May 28, 2024 9:11 PM

Ain't they taking roles from real women?

by Anonymousreply 23May 28, 2024 10:22 PM

I think Alex considers himself "nonbinary" but identifies as male.

by Anonymousreply 24May 29, 2024 10:37 AM

I love his performance of I Am Changing, from the Glee Project.

He was just a teen, but still did an amazing job.

To me s/he's another Jennifer Hudson -- remarkable voice, dead behind the eyes, no acting talent. And I promise that I felt that way even before s/he didn't show for my performance of SHUCKED -- twice.

by Anonymousreply 26June 1, 2024 2:55 AM

I'm with R26.

Great singers though they both are, Alex Newell and Jennifer Hudson always seem to have nothing happening behind the eyes.
