Dana Ashbrook- a Vintage Beefcake

Dana Vernon Ashbrook was born on May 24, 1967 in San Diego, California. His father was the director of the Palomar College Department of Performing Arts, and his mother was a teacher who performed at their local theater.

His very first role was an uncredited part in 1978’s “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!” when he was just 10 years old. After this he just stuck to school and school plays. His career officially started while he was a teen and in the school play. An agent saw him in the play and was impressed, offering to be his agent. He instantly got cast in guest roles on some tv shows like Lacey & Cagney, Knots Landing and ABC Afterschool Special. Right after that, in 1988, he was cast as Tom Essex in Return of the Living Dead 2 and cast in Waxwork, followed by a guest spot on 21 Jump Street. In 1989 he landed the role of Joey in She's Out Of Control.

The role that would be what he is best known for came in 1990, when he landed the role of Bobby Briggs in the series “Twin Peaks”. He played the role from 1990-1991. While filming Twin Peaks he also made four low budget films, all within a year, as well as guest starred on an episode of “The Hidden Room”.

In 1992 he reprised his role in the Twin Peaks prequel film and portrayed Clyde in Bonnie & Clyde, a TV movie. After this he starred in a few tv movies, independent films, low-budget films and failed tv shows for the remainder of the 90s. In the late 90s and early 00s he guest starred in numerous tv shows, like Charmed, The Outer Limits, The Pretender, Rules of Engagement, Dawson’s Creek, and Law & Order SVU.

In 2009 he was cast as a recurring character on the series “Crash”, the show based off the 2004 film, and he guest starred on an episode of Psych in 2010. After this he continued doing low budget films until 2017, when he reprised his role of Bobby Briggs in the revival to Twin Peaks, giving him another chance at the mainstream.

Since 2017 he has done more small films and guest spots on tv, and has never stopped working since the late 80s.

He is now 56 and has been married to his wife since 2015 after years of being together.

R8 he does look good with gray hair. Agreed. He has aged nicely and naturally.

Vintage?

by Anonymousreply 15May 19, 2024 11:43 PM

He was quite good as Bobby. In the movie, “Fire Walk With Me”, he does this backward glide into the high school which was pretty funny.

by Anonymousreply 16May 19, 2024 11:44 PM

His forehead is a bit low.

I mean I had to nitpick at something....

by Anonymousreply 17May 19, 2024 11:49 PM

Someone who has been working as an actor since the 80s qualifies as Vintage at this point. People don’t realize how long ago the 80s were at this point.

by Anonymousreply 18May 19, 2024 11:50 PM

If you lived through them, R18, you do.

You feel vintage.

by Anonymousreply 19May 19, 2024 11:52 PM

R18 I agree. I mean, 80s clothing and merch is vintage and 80 music and movies are considered very old now, so I can’t see the issue with 80s and early 90s actors being “vintage” at this point.

by Anonymousreply 20May 19, 2024 11:52 PM

I had a huge crush on him on Twin Peaks

by Anonymousreply 21May 19, 2024 11:54 PM

He resembles Jim Hutton a bit.

He was very pretty on Twin Peaks, but I never liked Bobby. Too much of a punk (which he was supposed to be, so kudos to Ashbrook)

I much preferred the cute Sheriff.

I watched Return of the Living Dead so many times as a kid, but never put it together that Tom was Bobby Briggs. Time for a rewatch I guess.

by Anonymousreply 27May 20, 2024 12:18 AM

That 90s butt cut is so hilarious to me now, but I lusted after the guys in high school who had it because it wasn't a mullet or heavy metal feathers.

by Anonymousreply 28May 20, 2024 12:20 AM

R27 yes, he is Tom in Part II.

by Anonymousreply 29May 20, 2024 12:22 AM

He has aged very well indeed. He's a very sexy man at 56.

by Anonymousreply 30May 20, 2024 12:23 AM

He reminds me of Jennifer Love Hewitt's husband, Brian Hallisay, he who played the gay cop in Cold Case Forever Blue.

by Anonymousreply 31May 20, 2024 12:31 AM

God, now I'm feeling all nostalgic.

by Anonymousreply 32May 20, 2024 12:33 AM

by Anonymousreply 34May 20, 2024 12:48 AM

[quote]Someone who has been working as an actor since the 80s qualifies as Vintage at this point. People don’t realize how long ago the 80s were at this point.

Yeah, 1984 was 40 years ago,

For perspective, think of the major differences/changes between 1884 and 1924.

To people in 1984, "40 yeas ago" was 1944 (i.e. WW2).

When I was a kid in the '90s, I remember anything '50s was considered vintage.

by Anonymousreply 39May 20, 2024 5:33 AM

[quote]In 1992 he reprised his role in the Twin Peaks prequel film and portrayed Clyde in Bonnie & Clyde, a TV movie.

I was too young for TWIN PEAKS at the time, but I did watch that Bonnie & Clyde TV film, which was my introduction to him.

Needless to say, I was smitten as a middle school gayling.

That movie also featured the eldest sister from LIFE GOES ON as Bonnie.

Matt Fielding from MELROSE PLACE as Bonnie's secret admirer who takes part in the hunt/ambush.

And DL Fave Betty Buckley as Bonnie's mother.

I get him mixed up with Daphne Ashbrook.

by Anonymousreply 41May 20, 2024 6:20 AM

Does Daphne have a penis R41?

by Anonymousreply 42May 20, 2024 7:05 AM

They're brother and sister, no?

Both very attractive and talented.

I have wondered why neither went far in their acting career.

They probably refused to put out and got out!

Incidentally, Daphne played the fiancée in this really good '90s Hallmark movie, co-starring Campbell Scott and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Not everyone can “go far”. He’s worked steadily as an actor. That’s a lot more than Most can say

by Anonymousreply 44May 20, 2024 12:36 PM

I love the name Dana for a guy.

by Anonymousreply 45May 20, 2024 2:43 PM

Time is generally a horrible thief. But, he’s aged pretty damn well.

by Anonymousreply 46May 20, 2024 3:34 PM

He seems like a good guy. I was a huge Twin Peaks fan but he never did much for me - too scrawny. I preferred James Marshall

by Anonymousreply 47May 20, 2024 3:53 PM

Twin Peaks had one of the most attractive casts ever.

by Anonymousreply 48May 20, 2024 4:00 PM

James Marshall was really hot, too

0/10 fail

by Anonymousreply 50May 20, 2024 6:28 PM

OP- He was not beefcake more like

SLIM-cake.

by Anonymousreply 51May 20, 2024 6:37 PM

I saw the original Twin Peaks and Bonnie & Clyde, but that's it. I remember him being wide-eyed, and he didn't blink often enough. There's a brief shot of him lurking behind Jonathan Silverman at a party in Soleil Moon Frye's documentary Kid 90.

by Anonymousreply 52May 26, 2024 10:18 PM

Like Kathie Lee Gifford said, his intense looks were perfect for a show like Twin Peaks. He had intense eyes, hardly blinking.

by Anonymousreply 53May 26, 2024 10:31 PM

A well-known homosexual, according to DL legend.

by Anonymousreply 54May 26, 2024 10:33 PM

R54 ugh. You’re gonna get greyed out if you continue your bullshit. He’s been with the same woman for many years. That was never DL legend. You making shit up is getting old, especially to Muriel.

by Anonymousreply 55May 26, 2024 10:35 PM

he was impressive in the twin peaks reboot, i would love to see him doing some high quality work in the near future. his face is super expressive.

by Anonymousreply 56May 26, 2024 11:08 PM

[quote] People don’t realize how long ago the 80s were at this point.

Welcome to Datalounge!

by Anonymousreply 57May 26, 2024 11:09 PM

Sorry, R55, I'm only saying what was raised as gossip on DL in years past. And nobody's greying anybody out here for claiming some actor was gay.

by Anonymousreply 58May 27, 2024 12:15 AM

He wasn’t gay. And that was never gossip here.

by Anonymousreply 59May 27, 2024 12:37 AM

As far as you can remember, R59. But as the saying goes, every good-looking actor is "considered gay" on DataLounge, and I remember his name coming up a number of times (in fact that's the only connection I remember his name coming up on DL).

by Anonymousreply 60May 27, 2024 12:46 AM

His scene in the third season of Twin Peaks bursting into tears at seeing Laura Palmer's photograph was amazing. It totally rewrote the character for me and doubled down on Laura's death as being a thing that traumatized an entire community.

by Anonymousreply 61May 27, 2024 2:44 AM

The scene.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 62May 27, 2024 2:46 AM

R61 rewrote? I didn’t feel that way. I felt we were seeing an older version. We all grow up at some point.

by Anonymousreply 63May 27, 2024 2:54 AM

His tears were more than trauma. They were nostalgia.

by Anonymousreply 64May 27, 2024 2:55 AM

Yeah, he probably hadn’t thought about her in a long time and then seeing that photo brought him back 25 years. Made me sad, too!

by Anonymousreply 65May 27, 2024 3:00 AM

He was terrific in 2017's Twin Peaks: The Return. Granted, the writing for his character was also great. It was really rewarding to see his 25 year character arc play out

by Anonymousreply 66May 27, 2024 3:06 AM

R63, I had always seen him as a selfish and hot-headed kid. His reappearance brought out the fact that he had been genuinely hurt by Laura's death and missed her.

You're right in saying that he had grown up.

by Anonymousreply 67May 27, 2024 3:39 AM

Did he ever get his willy or ass out?

by Anonymousreply 68May 27, 2024 12:50 PM

R68 I assume he showers daily.

by Anonymousreply 69May 27, 2024 4:39 PM

Shut up R69 you dirty tease

by Anonymousreply 70May 27, 2024 5:25 PM

Come here tonight and found all these threads and the one about Vicki Lawrence sending Rue McClanahan a stripper are all gray lined. Something actually discussing good looking men on a message board for gay men! Yet trolls of various types are allowed to run rampant here. I hope there are enough MAGAT trolls and T-loons to keep this joint running after the rest of us have been chased off. Congrats Muriel. 🖕

I won't be renewing my subscription this year.

by Anonymousreply 71May 29, 2024 2:34 AM

VBC, I like your threads. But the dudes from earlier centuries (1800s) were the best. I think you've had a couple of those.

by Anonymousreply 72May 29, 2024 2:46 AM

R71, vantage teacake is one of those trolls. look at all the posts, dozens per thread, talking to itself. It’s fake engagement and you can smell her posts (it is a woman posting these you know) from miles away. She can’t resist conflating her Hollywood obsessions with whatever topic is being discussed. Who needs a regurgitation of an actor’s IMDB page when the topic is beefcake? If you’re a troll, you can’t help yourself.
