Is Zverev's heavily tattooed PP there? Normally she's front and center and aware of the cameras.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 17, 2024 4:10 PM |
The tattoos hide the bruises.

I'm more excited about his hairy hamstrings. He probably has a beautiful, hairy crack.

Disappointing, seemed like a winnable match for Tommy Paul. That said, he hasn't been back from his ankle injury for that long, maybe he'll peak at RG.

Like Israel supporters, I feel like I can't root for Zverev, but damn I want to. He's hot. Just fuck. And who the hell is Jarry anyway? Oh I guess I'll abstain.
But Iga's my gal, no matter what you lot say. Take shehulk down, Miss Poland!

by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 18, 2024 12:44 AM |
Zverev is sexy as hell.
Why does Tommy Paul never take his hat off? Is he losing his hair or something? His PP bailed on him to attend a Sports Illustrated event in the US.

He seems like Fritz. Selfish but you let them have it.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | May 18, 2024 5:44 AM |
Oh, I get it now.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | May 18, 2024 5:45 AM |
R29 not sure but Tommy was actually a really good junior. Won junior majors. He is a really good mover and if healthy I've always thought if he hit a hot streak he could win a major or get to a couple of finals. He has a really good back hand. And he's very technically sound off both sides. He doesn't really spray all over the place like the other Americans unless he's pressing.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 18, 2024 5:55 AM |
If Tommy Paul were a little taller, he could be a Top 5 player.* His movement is his best asset but his relative lack of power is what's keeping him from getting to that next level.
Fritz is basically the opposite: has the height, has the power and some big weapons but his movement is total garbage. It always has been, too. If you look at articles about him from when he first went pro, everyone was talking about his terrible movement even then.
Ben Shelton seems to have all of the pieces, just needs to put it together and get some experience.
*Carlitos is only 6' but he's special.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | May 18, 2024 12:36 PM |
PP means what?
by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 18, 2024 12:42 PM |
R47 Poison Pussy - Definition: A tennis player's trophy girlfriend/wife whose toxic energy drags down our DL G&T Favourites
by Anonymous | reply 48 | May 18, 2024 1:57 PM |
Tommy Paul at 6'1" is the same height as Nadal, Federer and Sampras. Djokovic and Sinner are just an inch taller at 6'2". Ruud is 6 feet even. Agassi's 5'11". Laver at 5'8" is debatably the 20th century GOAT. Tommy's height is no excuse not to make the top 5.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 18, 2024 4:03 PM |
Tommy has other hobbies. I have seen his social media, he's fishing and drinking etc. I don't think a serious pro would ever drink.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | May 18, 2024 4:08 PM |
Sinner is 6'4. The player heights on the ATP website are out of date for a lot of players.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | May 18, 2024 4:11 PM |
Still, plenty of tennis shrimps made it to number 1. Add former number ones Lleyton Hewitt and Jimmy Connors at 5'10", McEnroe and Muster at 5'11" to the list of high-achieving tennis shorties above.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | May 18, 2024 4:32 PM |
Ugh, I was hoping Big Sable would take this.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | May 18, 2024 4:44 PM |
Back to the drawing board for Sabalenka, who put in a better effort than the scoreline suggests. It will take sustained mental lapses from Swiatek (or a freak LEGO injury) for most of the field to stand a chance in Paris.

Penko has a 4-0 h2h on Iga. She and Rybakina are apparently the only ones who can take Iga out. The only issue is, Penko will lose before she gets to play Iga, and Rybakina has the constitution of a Victorian era child and is often out.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | May 18, 2024 5:11 PM |
Iga is the mini Rafa on clay. No one is beating her unless she beats herself.

Tommy Paul used to be so unserious that he once showed up to a match drunk/hungover and flopped. They wouldn't give him a US Open wild card because of that incident.

Half-joking fears that Giorgi's dad sold her to an oil sheikh, necessitating her abrupt retirement, aren't quite as funny now that this report has surfaced in Italy. I'll link to Reddit for those who avoid Twitter:
[quote]The Giorgi saga continues: The owner of the villa where she and her family used to live claims they left with six months of unpaid rent and took half the furniture, including Persian carpets, expensive pieces, and a 500 kg antique table.

I wonder if Zverev dumped his PP. She wasn't there for what is arguably the biggest match of his career since his gruesome injury. He didn't go out of his way to thank her specifically.

The Zverev version of dumping is hospitalization.

I recall hearing Jim Courier talk during IW or Miami about Tommy taking the sport more seriously in recent years and seeing results because of it. He stopped partying and got serious about his fitness. His coach, Brad Stine, is very good and wouldn't work with Tommy if he wasn't serious. That said, I don't feel like Tommy will ever reach a Slam final. But should have a better career than like, say, Robby Ginepri. Tommy will have a Todd Martin career, which is just fantastic for him.

Domicakes out in second round of RG Qualies to Virtanen. I guess at least he went out on Suzanne Lenglen. Sad to see his career petering out in a whimper.

Boss Daddy goes down iIN FLAMES to Alex Michelsen in Geneva.
I'm not convinced that Michelsen isn't actually Jenson Brooksby in very light disguise. He has the same 'no neck monster' physical vibe.

For those of you considering a subscription to Tennis Channel Plus, my advice is don't bother. Terrible customer service and their replays don't work half the time. Tennis TV is much better. It's too bad they don't cover the Slams.

R134 Tiafoe has peaked. It was wishful thinking among the American tennis commentariat that he had slam winning potential or was going to be perennial top 10er. I do hope he can rebound and at least hang out in the top 20 for the next few years.

Doesn't Gaston have a reputation for being a cunt on court? Like terrible, disrespectful gamesmanship? Or am I think of another young French player?
by Anonymous | reply 141 | May 22, 2024 9:30 PM |
Gaston is notorious for allegedly fixing matches. Moutet probably takes the cake for worst behaved young French player.

So why do we think Big Foe hasn't gone further? The only technical thing that caught my eye was the weird hitch in his forehand. He makes it work, but it seems ungainly. He has a good serve and and he's a great mover. What's lacking? Net game? Head?

R144, I think Tiafoe’s greatest weakness is that he doesn’t seem to have a good game plan when he’s out there on the court, and it’s this lack of an overall strategy or specific tactics that often results in him playing the wrong shot at the wrong time.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | May 23, 2024 7:29 PM |
Tiafoe is addicted to the big shot, the one that makes the crowd ooh and ahh. Sometimes it works beautifully.
Other times he’d be better served by focusing on routine point construction.

Rafa playing Zverev in the first round is actually good for him. Should he win? He is the fourth seed going forward.
I'd much rather he play Zverev than Carlos or Sinner or Novak. He can beat Zverev if he can must up even one/half of old Rafa.
by Anonymous | reply 169 | May 24, 2024 1:23 AM |
Let's be real: Rafa is not ready for RG. If he makes it to the second week, it would be a miracle.
It would be embarrassing for him to lose in the first week to some scrub. If he loses to Zverev, who's playing some of his best tennis right now, there's no shame.

by Anonymous | reply 177 | May 24, 2024 1:50 PM |
Interested to see where Perricard ends up in his career (he is only 20). He and Fils won the French Open boys doubles title together and are close in age. Fils got off to a bigger start so far - tournament title, top 30 ranking - while Perricard is just getting into the top 100. I like Fils (and think he's hot), but there's nothing particularly standout about his game . Don't get me wrong - being a top 20-50 player is a huge accomplishment. I'm just wondering if he can go levels above that - Top 15 or 10, win bigger tournaments, make deep slam runs. He's only made a couple of second rounds in his so-far limited appearances at Slams.
Perricard is 6'8" and moves incredibly well for his size. His serve is big, but doesn't strike me as being as big as it could. He's got that flattish one-handed backhand, that I don't think is going to be a strength like Wawrinka's, but can he avoid it being a liability. He mixes it up a lot - works his way to net, serves and volleys sometimes - and that game often takes more time to develop.

A straight forward straight sets win over a combustible Darderi.
by Anonymous | reply 181 | May 24, 2024 2:13 PM |
I agree, 180, but Isner had quite a trick. One world-class shot allowed him to be a Top 10 player and make some deep Slam runs. Perricard moves much better - so better defense, ability to stay in rallies longer, and might have a broader game, be a more "complete" player. But because his serve isn't as big as Isner's - he hasn't done anything close to what Isner did on tour. BUT - again, he's only 20 so hasn't had many chances yet; Isner didn't really get going until he was 22-24 post-college. I wonder if Perricard will grow more.

If Zverev didn't have the charges and trial hanging over him, everyone would be saying that he's the one to beat. I think he clearly is but what do I know... Sinner and Alcaraz have injuries and haven't been playing, Novak and Rafa are old and finally playing like it. Tsitsy and his dad won't get into the final. Rublev will beat himself up before the semis. I mean, it's Zverev. Should be, anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 196 | May 24, 2024 5:01 PM |
It sure as hell had better not be Zverev, the second or third biggest jerk on the tour. Other than Rome, his clay court season was mediocre: a loss to Tsitsipas in the Monte Carlo round of 16, to Garin in the Munich QFs, and to Cerundolo in the Madrid round of 16. We deserve better than him as the French Open champion.
by Anonymous | reply 197 | May 24, 2024 5:39 PM |
I'm picking Ruud. If the back holds up, I think he can finally do it. He'll beat Novak in the semis.
by Anonymous | reply 198 | May 24, 2024 5:48 PM |
Novak just used Geneva to stay match-fit. He surreptitiously let that match go; a few days rest before RG. I dislike him, but if that was the scenario then I think it a smart one. RG is the prize he wants, to steal Rafa's favorite tournament. Rafa will get massive attention at RG, go out early, and then Novak will turn it in to his own show and beg for attention.
by Anonymous | reply 199 | May 24, 2024 5:54 PM |
Give it a rest. Novaxx is toast. Number of tournaments won in 2024: Zilch.
by Anonymous | reply 200 | May 24, 2024 5:57 PM |
Aren't Ruud and Djokovic slated to meet in the quarters if the seeds hold, R198?
by Anonymous | reply 201 | May 24, 2024 6:08 PM |
No one hates Novaxx more than me. But he's most likely winning RG. As usual, he has the easiest draw. His two biggest rivals are injured and on the other side of the draw. My beloved Rafa is on fumes.
And it's best of five. I just don't seeing anyone besides Rafa, Sinner or Carlos beating him. Especially on clay. And that's just not happening this year.
by Anonymous | reply 202 | May 24, 2024 6:10 PM |
Not even Creatina can save Djokovic from Father Time. Novak has run out of gas. He doesn't have the same intensity, tenacity or endurance any more. He hasn't been faking failure for five months as a strategy to win another Slam. His demeanor lately seems resigned to his fate that outside of Serbia he'll never have the same measure of respect given to Rafa and Roger, no matter how many Slams he's won.
by Anonymous | reply 203 | May 24, 2024 6:22 PM |
Looks like Tisitsi and Paula Badosa are back together
by Anonymous | reply 204 | May 24, 2024 7:50 PM |
Losing to Sinner at the AO must have really affected Novak mentally. It is difficult to maintain intense emotions of any kind, and tennis has been his #1 priority for 15+ years at this point. His kids are older and more aware of when he's NOT with them because he's off playing tennis, which must be hard for him -- I think he's just lost his competitive edge. How will he get that back? I don't know that he can.
by Anonymous | reply 205 | May 24, 2024 7:53 PM |
I think the end is nearing for Djoker, but I still wouldn't count him out. I need him not to win a Slam the rest of the year before I declare him done. He's such a gamer and loves to play possum and even with the AO loss and no wins this year, the other RG contenders are all having issues. He can often summon something for the biggest of occasions.
by Anonymous | reply 206 | May 24, 2024 7:56 PM |
Tsitsy kinda makes Paula look pathetic in that statement. He made the decision to end it, he broke up with her, but SHE'S the one who begged him for a meeting?
He's actually been playing well since they broke up. If he starts losing again, he'll get frustrated and dump her again, watch.

I won't bother listing the starkly obvious reasons as to why the male tour players are all straight, and in the slightest case where there may be a 'closeted' player, why it would be ridiculous to come out while on tour. I mean how stupid would you have to be to not understand that.
Here's the deal though, you all want to find an out pro-tennis player on the tour? Good luck. Where you should be looking is the tennis players team, from the coaches on down the line. They do exist, albeit discreetly.

To be fair to Humbert, he always seems to get landed with notoriously hard first round draws at Slams. A couple of times he's had Kyrgios IIRC.
Sonego is also a tricky first round - when he's on, he can beat most people, and has been a hard match up for Humbert in the past.

Raducanu's USO run was legendary. So what if she never equals that...it was historic, unlikely to replicated, and a genuine Cinderella sports moment.

Raducanu won a GS fair & square. It’s what came after that’s so much 💩

You're right. It doesn't matter who Emma faced during her run at the USO, or who she didn't face, she got across the line. Jury is still out if she can do it again without the fantasy draw.

Fils joins Humbert, Tabilo, Draper and Jarry in the First Round Flop House. He did have the excuse of one of the toughest non-seeded opponents, Matteo Twinknaldi.
by Anonymous | reply 323 | May 27, 2024 4:30 PM |
Fils hasn't had a breakout Slam. And by "breakout" I mean merely the second week, so even just 4th round/Round of 16. That seems reasonable with the right draw. But, I guess he should make a 3rd round first, which he hasn't done.

Rafa actually isn't far off from really good Rafa form. Had he been able to get a couple matches in before facing someone like Zverev? I think he wins and wins rather easily.
by Anonymous | reply 332 | May 27, 2024 5:07 PM |
Baez in trouble in the 5th set against some Brazilian Qualifier. I really thought that this might be the first RG since Rafa's emergence where a dark horse clay courter might actually win the damn thing - given the shaky status of all the top players coming into it.
However, it seems like they've all decided to blow themsleves up in the first round!
by Anonymous | reply 333 | May 27, 2024 5:08 PM |
I'm not sure R332. No doubt he could play a little better. But, he just does not have the court coverage/defensive skills. If he's ahead in the point and playing offense, he's still elite. But a big part of his game was getting into offensive positions from defensive positions, and that's just not happening consistently. Also, his serve has declined, and a strong serve is one way to get ahead in the point and be on the offensive right away in the point. At times he looks close to his former self, but if I watch closely, the distance back is far.
by Anonymous | reply 334 | May 27, 2024 5:12 PM |
I think Rafa's serv isn't that spectacular atm because he injured his back playing golf. He's kept that on the DL but it's def affected him.

Monfils deserves some credit though, playing in the same era as the Big 3/Big 4. He's older than Murray and just a few months younger than Nadal. Unlike either, La Monf is still ranked in the top 40. I've loved watching him over the last two decades.

by Anonymous | reply 368 | May 27, 2024 10:01 PM |
Some people say Monfils wasted his talent - in the sense that he could have done more, even if he did have a long, fruitful career. There was a phase of his career when just didn't know (or didn't care) what to consistently do with his game, because he could do it all. Sometimes he'd serve big and hit huge groundstrokes and be a power player. Other times, because he's so mobile, he'd stand way back and retrieve like ASV or Medvedev. Still other times, he'd work his way into net more and try more touch shots. Sometimes he's do a combo of some or all of these things in a single match and change tactics for no apparent reason. I think he liked entertaining and I think he liked seeing what he could do. He played more straightforward and in a more consistent style as he's gotten older. And there may have been more base consistency in terms of game style than I'm giving him credit for - because the sometimes wild swings in tactics and style really stands out.
All that said, he was still very successful - 12 titles; a high ranking of 6. 2 Slam SFs, 8 QFs, 10 4R. Some wins over big players. Longevity - a LONG period in the Top 40 (at least). It's not a HOF level career, but it's a level that the vast majority of players never even get close to. And he's a fun and nice guy. He'll be missed when he goes.

What DL-derived nicknames have stuck on DL?
Whenever there's "who are you rooting for"; "team" questions, the nicknames can vary quite a bit for the same player depending on how cheeky the poster is being. But the DL-given nicknames (so not something like Rafa) that are really established include, IMO: Daddy (now often Boss Daddy), Legz, Legz+, Big Foe, Mopsy, She-Hulk. What else?

What the hell is wrong with Tennis Channel? The subscription price is over $100 to get their online coverage for replays that start in the middle of matches, streams displaying as ended when the match is halfway over, etc. Do better, Ken Solomon/Sinclair Broadcasting Group.
by Anonymous | reply 388 | May 28, 2024 2:52 AM |
I will almost always pay for Slam coverage, R388. I have NO problems playing for a month of ESPN+ so I can watch any court I watch for USO, Wimbledon, and AO. I even used to pay for ESPN+ AND a month of Fubo, Sling or Youtube TV when ESPN only aired the semis and finals on regular ESPN and not ESPN+ (they stopped that at this year's AO; hopefully it will be the same for Wimbledon and the USO). Though as far as FUBO, SLING or YouTube TV was concerned, I could usually finagle a discounted monthly rate, a free trial, or something else that made it cheaper. I consider it money well spent - I watch a ton of tennis during the two weeks of Slams.
For this year's French Open, I was all on board to do it again. I paid $5.99 for Peacock streaming, which got me the first two days and will get me the finals, as well as coverage this coming weekend. I was seriously considering paying for a month of Fubo, which has Tennis Channel - but that only gets me the one match they're showing at any time. I also considered TC+ because then I'd have somewhere I could pick which match I wanted to watch but the cost just seems excessive. If it was $9.99, $19.99, even $24.99 for one months of TC+ with access to all matches, I'd probably do it. But the expensive yearly option is the only option and no other Slams are on TC. I may sit this one out (except NBC/Peacock content) and follow scores, look at highlights, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 389 | May 28, 2024 3:22 AM |
I'm in the same boat, R389, and will also pay the monthly fee for TennisTV to see most of the ATP matches (though sometimes the matches not televised are those I want to see the most). Tennis Channel's only payment option feels more like a ransom, holding RG hostage. I've paid it begrudgingly only to see coverage that's worse than any of the other streaming services.

Iga will now crush her way through the tournament. That was the one chance the field had against her.
She might be annoying, but she's damn tenacious.

In other news, Mauresmo bans alcohol on all courts in an effort to staunch the hooligan-like behaviour that's blighted so many of the matches involving French players. Although, by the end of tomorrow it's looking distinctly possible that no French players will be left standing in the singles draws.

Big Foe's slide continues. He can can't string together wins anymore. Though, he really is a 25-40 type player more than the 10-20 player he was for a bit. Maybe he can get back to a higher level. His coaching situation is a mess. His replacement for Ferreira is already gone and his current coach is a young guy who has been in his camp, maybe a former hitting partner/friend.

Another good win for Paula Badosa. Hopefully she’s on the comeback.
Clara Tauson is indeed a chinless wonder. Ostapenko must be furious.
Danielle looked especially keyed up and ornery during today’s match. I wouldn’t want to be her coaching team tonight.
Where has Donna Vecic been? She’s not even seeded.

The Brat won the first two sets against His Royal Handsomeness, Flavio Cobolli, but the Italian's just levelled up.

I just watched Gill Gross' youtube review and he pointed out how great Naomi Osaka was in her match with Iga Swiatek. He said about four or five points that she lost due to nerves, and otherwise, she would have won the match. He thought he might end up being 'match of the year' for the WTA, that's how good she was.
I'm the rare Iga fan on DL, but I also love Naomi, and would love to see her be a force again for women's tennis.
by Anonymous | reply 530 | May 31, 2024 9:02 AM |
* crap, sorry for the mistakes. He thought IT might be match of the year... and the whole 'four or five points' sentence is fucked up. Getting too late for me.

Gill Gross troll back - he said he loved watching Naomi serve, close to Serena level, the best in the WTA.
And he rhapsodized about Holger Rune - the most brilliant player in tennis - fast, and even off balance, could hit a shot with laser accuracy, that no one else in the game could do.
I'll post the link and then cease and desist, I promise.

Felix's diastema is adorable, just like the rest of him.
by Anonymous | reply 559 | May 31, 2024 6:24 PM |
The only reason play doesn't continue in the rain seems to be that the lines can get slippery. They need to come up with a solution to that and then just keep playing unless it's torrential downpour. Instead of the shiny, slippery lines material that they have to nail down, maybe build the lines into the court somehow with white clay? IDK. It sucks that some had to play their matches at like midnight last night.
by Anonymous | reply 560 | May 31, 2024 6:34 PM |
Nope—not a solution. Clay is clay and the lines are the lines. Thus it ever was.
by Anonymous | reply 561 | May 31, 2024 6:38 PM |
R552 I'm not sure I would go as far as saying Korda will beat Carlitos on clay. However, when I saw Korda at Indian Wells this year, I was totally impressed. He's deceptively fast, and a really clean ball striker. I think his serve is a very pretty motion too.
by Anonymous | reply 562 | May 31, 2024 7:14 PM |
Korda's legs are weirdly fleshy and undefined given his build. Just sayin'.
by Anonymous | reply 563 | May 31, 2024 8:19 PM |
R563 TV is a bit deceptive when it comes to legs, I think. Even guys who look like they have thin legs, look amazing a bigger than average in person. Even Jannik Sinner and Alexei Popyrin had really nice legs when I saw them up close.
