Jeff Aquilon- top male model of the 80s & Vintage Beefcake

California native Jeff Aquilon was a student at Pepperdine University in 1978 when he was discovered. Aquilon was captain of the water polo team and Bruce Weber was holding a casting near the college when he spotted Aquilon and told him he should come audition to be his new model for a big photoshoot. Many young men showed up, but it was Aquilon who impressed Weber and his crew the most. They took an instant liking to him and he won! Aquilon would be featured in GQ magazine

In May of 1979 Aquilon would make the cover of GQ magazine (pictured below), and the rest would be history. Throughout the 80s he was the top working male model for numerous years, booking campaigns, booking runways with every big designer and being featured in every magazine you could think of. He worked with every top photographer and was a favorite in the industry.

He married model Nancy Donahue in the early 80s but they would get divorced. He later married again and had 4 children. Him and his family live in Santa Barbara. He is now the Director of Academic & Institutional Technology at Westmont College in Santa Barbara.

The woman in OP's pic reminds me of Cara Delavigne.

by Anonymousreply 21May 12, 2024 7:08 PM

That’s Mariel Hemingway

by Anonymousreply 22May 12, 2024 7:10 PM

Omg Harry looks like he could be a clone of this guy!

by Anonymousreply 23May 12, 2024 7:17 PM

Hot guy.

I wonder what it would feel like to be a guy like him and know that you are merely the flavor of the year or two and then your age and modeling agency tastes move on.

You'd have to watch what you eat every single day. Hit the gym every other day.

by Anonymousreply 24May 12, 2024 7:23 PM

He worked nonstop from 1979 to the early 90s r24.

by Anonymousreply 25May 12, 2024 7:27 PM

He is obviously very attractive but somehow his face looks so empty and bland that he radiates stupidity. Wonder if his fleshy features aged well.

by Anonymousreply 26May 12, 2024 7:30 PM

“Him and his family live in Santa Barbara”. Oh dear.

by Anonymousreply 27May 12, 2024 7:30 PM

R24 ummmm… his GQ cover OP posted was in 1979. The commercial posted at R20 was 1984. That’s already 5 years apart, more than double the false shelf life you’ve created for male models.

by Anonymousreply 28May 12, 2024 7:30 PM

[quote]mar, spoil, impair, disfigure, deface, detract from

Yes, I realize that.

Mariel and Margaux Hemingway both look like they could be Cara Delavigne's mother.

Wouldn't you know it, he still looks great

by Anonymousreply 34May 12, 2024 7:47 PM

Classic horseface. Why are only women excoriated for this trait.

by Anonymousreply 35May 12, 2024 8:17 PM

Probably because he doesn’t have a horse face. He’s long and lean. The longer face fits his body frame. A small head would look like a peanut

by Anonymousreply 36May 12, 2024 8:24 PM

I think he looks better in his head shot at r30 than the modeling photos. I assume it was taken in his 50s. He's actually projecting personality. What a change in careers. From the job title, you'd expect a classic nerd.

[QUOTE]Omg Harry looks like he could be a clone of this guy!

Hamlin?

by Anonymousreply 37May 12, 2024 8:25 PM

r20 Je n'ai pas aimé l'Eau Sauvage Extreme. L'Eau Sauvage originale me suffisait.

Well, yes. He’s clearly (and visibly) much older in that photo than his modeling photos. He is in his 50s, yes.

A small interview he did for VMan in 2020 during the pandemic.

Serious sun-damaged skin in many of those photos.

by Anonymousreply 40May 12, 2024 8:33 PM

Now you’re talking OP! I didn’t care one way or the other about the other ‘80s male models posted here recently, but Jeff Aquilon always gave me pause whenever I would see him in a magazine. And I remember the furor his Bruce Weber photo layout in Soho Weekly News caused. Jeff in bed in nothing but his Calvins.

The gay world flipped the fuck out. A star was born, a famous underwear line was relaunched, and a new, openly erotic way of looking at men had re-entered the culture for the first time since the art of J.C. Leyendecker.

by Anonymousreply 41May 12, 2024 8:51 PM

What about Buzz Collins?

by Anonymousreply 42May 13, 2024 12:49 AM

I wish Michael Gross would do a companion to his Model book. The second could just be make model history. I would love that.

by Anonymousreply 43May 13, 2024 1:03 AM

R37 no. He looks like Prince Harry

by Anonymousreply 44May 13, 2024 2:04 AM

Your skin is flawless, right, R40?

Bitter envious DL elder gays are nothing if not predictable.

by Anonymousreply 45May 13, 2024 2:07 AM

I can't imagine Bruce Weber didn't talk Jeff Aquilon out of his clothes entirely.

by Anonymousreply 46May 13, 2024 2:17 AM

He only did one photoshoot with no clothing but didn’t do frontal nudity or anything. It was all done with taste.

Not every model Weber photographed got nude.

by Anonymousreply 47May 13, 2024 2:18 AM

R47 But most did get molested.

by Anonymousreply 48May 13, 2024 2:23 AM

Most? Some.

by Anonymousreply 49May 13, 2024 2:29 AM

I was wondering how long it would take you to get to Aquilon, OP/VB. As R41 said, he always made me stop when I'd see him in a magazine. He and his wife Nancy published an exercise book in 1984 called One on One: Exercising Together, the Sensual Way to Superbly Conditioned Bodies. (I think I got mine on eBay.) Never done of the exercises, but the photos are nice. He's mostly in a Speedo or shorts and usually with his wife, but there are a few of him showing the exercises with another fit guy. It's homoerotic if you want it to be. Here's an article on him with photos from four years ago.

R50 that article was posted upthread. His ex wife.

by Anonymousreply 51May 13, 2024 10:59 PM

That article says Aquilon is 52 (in 2020), which would have made him a ten year-old water polo captain at Pepperdine in 1978.

Sure.

by Anonymousreply 52May 14, 2024 1:35 AM

The article has his age wrong.

by Anonymousreply 53May 14, 2024 1:38 AM

His birthday isn’t available anywhere online btw.

by Anonymousreply 54May 14, 2024 1:38 AM

Per the article it was first published in 2010.

by Anonymousreply 55May 14, 2024 2:00 AM

R55 that makes sense why it says 52.

by Anonymousreply 56May 14, 2024 2:04 AM

If he is 52 in that article, time was not kind.

by Anonymousreply 57May 14, 2024 7:56 PM

He aged....still handsome.
