I truly think DL hates Emily Blunt because she’s a beautiful woman with a nice looking husband and a very nice life.
That’s just not acceptable here.
If he dumped her for a 21-year-old and she became a drunk then they’d embrace her.
Her life is just too nice for the bitter queens here.

Terrible casting for this film. She has zero sex appeal.
And she's a try-hard who thinks she's a lot funnier in public appearances than she actually is.

Biggest casting tragedy of the last 20 years. Emily having to give up Black Widow and Scarlett replacing her.
She is a dead ringer for Black Widow from the comics and Scarlett looks like a chubby kewpie doll.
What could have been.

by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 5, 2024 4:18 AM |
R12, she comes from wealth? She’s not classically trained, so did her family get her into acting?
She one time stated that her father originally wanted to make her a British pop star. Since I know nothing about her family, it didn’t make much sense.
How did she land “Prada” with scant acting experience in her native country?
Part of my strong dislike for her is that I get a charlatan vibe from her. She’s mediocre as an actress and, sorry, not a statuesque, charismatic presence on-screen, but Hollywood keeps rewarding her with plum roles.

by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 5, 2024 6:08 AM |
I don’t think Blunt’s target audience is ever going to be gay men, although in her best roles she has a kind of edge to her (a slight brittleness) that makes her interesting to watch. She’s probably someone a lot of women can identify with, and aspire to be: she is pretty without being unattainably beautiful, and she has wit and intelligence.
I saw the film yesterday, and liked it. It’s an entertaining piece of nonsense, just as the series was.
Neither Blunt nor Gosling have much acting to do in it. - They just go through the motions, and it’s enough. They are both fairly likeable, and the whole film seems based on that. They don’t have much sexual chemistry, but that’s fine. No-one is watching this as a love story. It’s a fairly broad action comedy, starring a group of actors you quite enjoy spending 2 hours with.
It seemed enjoyably old-fashioned to me: a silly story held together by actors who are smart enough to convey the feeling that they are amused to be in it. I actually wish there were more films like it, in an era where films seem to be restricted to soulless superhero tedium, or terribly serious stories telling us how awful the world is.

R19, no-one watching The Fall Guy, or most of her films is going to give her an IQ test. She brings a wit and intelligence which comes through on-screen, and which I think makes her likeable to a lot of the audience. Even if she isn’t smart in real life (which I don’t necessarily agree with), he on-screen persona makes her seem as if she is, and that is all that matters, given that she is an actress.
If she bores you, then you are not her audience, but I can imagine women in particular responding to her very differently. She’s the Hollywood version of a smart, pretty everywoman, and she’s definitely smart enough for that!

by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 5, 2024 4:11 PM |
Wow. Where to begin?
First, the success or failure of this movie has nothing to do with Emily Blunt. It’s “The Fall Guy,” not “The Fall Gal.” She’s the female lead and would be interchangeable with any of her contemporaries. It’s about the concept more than the stars.
Second, this is just a pure hate thread. It’s not even pointless bitchery. There’s nothing clever or witty about it. It’s like she’s the pretty, popular girl in school dating the cool guy and you’re the bitter, ugly nerd who hates her, OP.
You might have been able to fashion something fun and funny but you let your unhinged, bitter emotions create a sad, pathetic thread instead.

She can’t act! She has no on-screen charisma. No one fondly remembers that “Emily Blunt” performance or movie.
Clearly she has some fangurls on this thread, but we’re just sick of her overrated talent and bloated plastic face being shoved down our throats. She’s no Julia Roberts, Sigourney Weaver, or even Renée Zellweger. They owned movie roles they were in (Pretty Woman, Aliens, Bridget) and worked their way up to receive more significant roles. Blunt rides on the coattails of more significant costars (Cruise, Gosling, Streep, Hathaway, Murphy) or directors (Nolan, her husband) or cultural originators (Andrews). She has never owned a movie or been that impressive with her acting, and it show with her receiving her only Oscar nomination in Supporting at age 41 for ‘Oppenheimer’ (which was a throwaway / anyone could have played Kitty and gotten nominated).

Emily Blunt ran over one of OP’s cats - I assume he has several - and then took the carcass and beat his mother with it as OP helplessly watched.
She then lit the corpse on fire and threw it into OP’s rented trailer, incinerating all his belongings. She then laughed as OP watched his world go up in flames.
Then, just to make it worse, she and John Krasinski made love in front of OP, reminding him of his lonely nights and of the decades it has been since he felt the touch of a man. And now with his Chromebook turned to charcoal, OP can’t even watch midget porn anymore.
His vengeance has only begun.

Emily Blunt is a sadistic cannibal who hunts down handicapped homeless children to satisfy her twisted cravings. When she’s full, she and her best friend Kristi Noem go hunting for puppies as nothing sounds as sweet to her as a puppy’s final whimper.
Then when she’s done, she burns a British flag and pisses on a picture of the Queen, as she’s a well known traitor to her motherland.
She then goes to nursing homes and lets all the Alzheimer’s patients loose, cackling as they can’t find their way back. Sometimes, she puts out lit cigarettes on their heads just to hear the screams.
Her future plans include poisoning municipal water reservoirs, giving out handguns on the local playground, keying her neighbors’ cars and voting Republican.

So I didn’t really care about her one way or the other. Then I heard that interview from years ago where she made fun of a fat waitress whose only crime was being kind to Blunt at a Chili’s. I figured that was trashy (of Blunt) but maybe she was just nervous or something. Then during the press junket for Oppenheimer she did Jimmy Kimmel’s show with RDJ and Cillian Murphy. She walked in a few seconds before the men, sat down in the middle seat and kicked her feet up in the air for a few seconds. In the forty years I’ve watched chat shows I have NEVER seen anyone else do this. Grown adults are usually content to just walk in and sit down.
But she HAD to kick her feet up. Why?
Because she wanted EVERYBODY to see the crimson soles of her shoes so they know she’s wearing Laboutins. That was when I decided she was a shallow mean girl for real.

R116 she’s constantly giving interviews about, not quite about how shit America is, but almost. She did one with Brian Cox the actor. He gets away with it by being crotchety and old, she doesn’t.

She became a citizen as a necessary step to be accepted in her very calculated pathway to Hollywood leading (in her case, co-starring) roles. When she became a citizen, she said really nasty things that implied the US is inferior to the UK.

Emily Blunt is beautiful. OP’s thread title is mortifying.

she's not beautiful. before and after the plastic surgery.

Beautiful? She’s not even cute by any standards. English women are exceptionally ugly.

R122 it’s like how Kate Middleton, internationally is considered a pretty English Rose with great legs. But in terms of British women, she’s more than that, she’s Helen of Troy, a 1%er.
Island living gives rise to certain “looks”. Not many men on the street look like Hugh Grant. Many more resemble Eddie Marsan.

The movie isn't a big draw because people are still in "Ken" mode with Ryan. And where was the PR?
As for Emily: Her face is too angular, too basic. What attracts one to it? Nothing in particular.

R2 = The DL Resident Critic and Contrarian. He 💟 Emily Blunt, Timmy, and The Villages! And he has pity for the rest of us.

she’s just boring and basic. born rich, uppity smug attitude, mediocre acting skills. i don’t know why she keeps being pushed onto us peasants as an idol, i prefer my overlords to be good looking at least

[quote]A British accent works wonders on the inferiority complex of Americans.
I think you're referring to Liberals/Democrats, who tend to be Europhiles and self-loathing about being American.
Conservatives/Republicans are the opposite of that -- very patriotic and do not have an inferiority complex, especially when it comes to Europeans, who they don't really consider.
Why do you think many Americans are shifting right?
Among other things, they're seeing how bad the Left is making Americans look via 'woke' Hollywood/Broadway, which has pushed an anti-America messaging in the past decade.
Thus, many Americans no longer identify with the so-called American characters being portrayed on screen/stage, usually by foreigners.

ROFLMAO, r51. Literally. Thanks for that.

Also, sites like DataLounge (with mainly gay liberal American posters) give off the impression that all Americans are pessimistic, self-loathing Europhiles.
Nope. Just gay liberals -- a gloomy, self-hating bunch, with a hard-on for Europeans.

Oh, and liberal women, too.
Gay and female liberals are the ones who tend to be Europhiles and self-loathing about being American.
And they're the ones who've been running the U.S. entertainment industry in the past decade.
Is it any wonder why Hollywood and Broadway are the way they are today, with an anti-America bias and so many European actors?

There's a new animosity towards England since 2020 in America. Kids go on about empire, colonialism, slavery, reparations, blaming the Gaza mess on them, etc.
