I worked for GTE and had a bunch of stock that got converted to Verizon which worked out just fine 🙂

No. GTE was acquired by BELL ATLANTIC (one of the "Baby Bells" that came about as a result of the break up of Ma Bell.)

I live in California, and there were many pockets where GTE was the phone provider (instead of the dominant Pacific Bell), including mine. So I had GTE home phone service for many years.
