Many of us work in toxic atmospheres and just deal with it. I have been lucky for the past year to have found a really nice work environment. This has really made me reflect on my awful experiences. One company was great for three years, and then a new chairman came in and basically poisoned the firm.

The bottom line is, removing toxicity needs to come from the top. If her show was the terrible place people claim it was, that was on her to put an end to that behavior. I don't feel sorry for her at all. Go work at Target and see how many mansions you can flip on that salary.

Just came back from seeing her and I have to say, it was a really great show. Tig Notaro opened for her and the theater was sold out. Ellen was back to her observational humor that she was known for when she was a young stand up. She also talked about losing her show and how it was very difficult for her. I am a pretty good judge of people and while I do think Ellen likely has had some mean moments as we all have, I don't believe most of it. It was pretty obvious that most of the people in the room agreed with me. I even got to speak with her during the Q and A she held afterwards. One of the audience members asked her if she "had to apologize" to anyone after the rumors came out and she said, "No. I didn't do anything wrong" and then she asked if he was one of the people "who believed the rumors." It was a really intimate night at the Largo and I'm so glad I went. I think it was brave of her to address the rumors in the way that she did. I think her show runner was the one creating the "toxic workplace." It's worth noting that her Producer, Andy was in the audience tonight. I said to my friend, if she was really an asshole, why would anyone who worked for her want to still support her?

Come at me if you must (I'm sure you will) but Ellen has always been a hero to me for the way she came out on her sitcom. I was coming out around the same time so it was very meaningful to me. She revealed tonight that her mother has dementia which I find very sad as I'm dealing with dementia with my own mother.

I had lesbian neighbors who were fans of Ellen and her daytime show which was popular at the time. I have a friend who ran into her once and said she wasn't pleasant, but that can be a lot of celebs on any given day.

And many comedians talk about alcohol and surprise! most people drink to excess and laugh about it when recalling stories. She might be an alcoholic and maybe that does explain some asshole behavior but still, I look at the big picture. Of all the people in the world who deserve ire, the amount directed toward Ellen seems complete overkill. I watched this movie for the first time recently. All I could think while watching this was that Beryl Reid's character, George, reminds me of and is the proto-Ellen DeGeneres (minus the fact that George is British and a working soap actress, not a stand-up comedian and former talk show host). I sure hope Ellen doesn't secretly molest nuns in taxi cabs and forces Portia to eat cigar butts when at home.

It's a very good movie, but more than a half-century later, it eerily foreshadows the stuff that came out about Ellen's toxic behavior when the cameras weren't rolling.
