How come American old ladies don’t wear turbans anymore? I’m watching the Belgian version of Professor T and there have been at least two older women who have worn turbans.
Turbans

There are other versions of Professor T than the Belgian one?

Because Gloria Fucking Swanson ruined them for everyone.

Yes, there is currently a British version, although I haven’t yet watched it to see if there is any turban action.

Angela Lansbury was rocking the turban look in the 1980s.

They were so sexy on those old broads and Turhan Bey.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 25, 2024 11:48 PM |
They must get sweaty under all that wrapping.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 25, 2024 11:58 PM |
I bet they used those in between their weekly hair appointments. Back then, women didn't wash their hair every day, and many let their hairstylists do that (as well as style their hair). Perhaps turbans were the way they hid their "not-so-coiffed" locks until their next hair appointment.

I think so too. Plus, many older women have thinning hair so maybe it’s a way to cover thinning hair and hide bald patches.

They could conceal curlers. Curlers are rare nowadays

It was old hat to her by then...

Didn't these menopausal ladies' turban gear get encrusted with evaporated sweat mixed with Max Factor within just a few days of wear? Did the turbans have removable, washable linings?
A turban on the wrong "lady" might be as tragic as Rudy Giuliani at Four Seasons Total Landscaping.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 26, 2024 8:00 AM |
Bob Mackie did a lot of turbans back in the day.
Barbra does look great in that shot R15. Funny Lady was the lesser movie but the costumes were better.
Unusual faces seem to carry them off well like Barbras' does.

Amateurs! Trifecta: turban, caftan, little white dog.

Because the old women of today came if age in the 60s and 70s, turbans were passe even then.
Watching Ripley I realized how much better people looked in trousers instead of the ubiquitous jeans. I never saw my father, born in 28, wear jeans, and he was blue collar.

The one woman whom I knew who wore them consistently lost her hair as a young woman in the Spanish Influenza epidemic, 1918-1919.
Yes, she was ancient when I knew here 30 or so years ago. She always seemed as though she had walked out of some between the wars British society novel, maybe from a party at Lady Molly Jeavons' in "A Dance to the Music of Time."

I have two women's turbans. I am an eldergay. I acquired them for campy fun in the privacy of my home. I also have some Sikh turbans as fond memories of the months I spent living in a Punjabi flophouse.

One of my guilty please shows is "The Masked Singer." I would never admit this to anyone face-to-face, but I take notes on the clues and everything. It's embarrassing. I have a masters degree, for Pete's sake.
Anyways....
SPOILER ALERT!
Jenifer Lewis was unmasked as Cleopatra Cat last episode. (It could not have been more obvious it was her...the voice, the speaking cadence, the picture of Bette Midler.) I was amused to see that when she removed her costume head, she was wearing a turban that matched her costume perfectly. It was like the Roxxxy Andrews wig reveal. I gay gasped.
So ends your F*****Y moment of the day. You may now return to your regularly scheduled programming.

by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 26, 2024 12:55 PM |
The short answer is that wigs improved. They are now the best way to disguise thinning hair or a bad hair day, assuming you have those often enough to bother to buy anything to disguise them.

Older black ladies still wear them.

Headscarves fall off all the time, especially if they're silk. IDK what Hollywood used to do to get them to stay so firmly in place.

I believe in the past 40-50 years, they have become more associated with those women who go to chemo. I know a few women in their 40s and 50s who wear turbans (and they look great) for that reason.

You can fashion a turban out of a headscarf. Bobby pins can secure it. Or don't use a slippery scarf! Rner Shirley Maclaine in Postcards from the Edge?

R46 That very well may be, but when black women wear them now, they call them bonnets.
