"Caitlin Clark drafted No. 1 in WNBA draft"
To no one’s surprise, Caitlin Clark was the first pick in Monday’s WNBA draft.
Upon hearing her name called, Clark embraced her brothers and parents before walking up to the stage to hug WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert. One of the first things she mentioned to ESPN’s Holly Rowe in her post-pick interview was her family.
That set the tone for the rest of the evening with draftees quick to thank their families after hearing their names called.
The No. 2 overall pick out of Stanford, Cameron Brink, was joined by her family at her draft table, including godmother Sonya Curry. She hugged Curry on her way to the stage and thanked her during her interview with Rowe.
“I think I just need to keep leaning on my people. You’ve listed all the amazing people in my life, and my godmother Sonya Curry up in there,” she said. “Shout out to my mom, my dad, and my brother, Cy. It really takes a village. It’s not a one-person job.”
Brink’s parents are the godparents to NBA stars Stephen Curry and Seth Curry, according to People.
The Curry brothers gave Brink advice ahead of draft day. She talked to both men Monday and called Stephen Curry five minutes before the start of the draft, she told reporters in a post-draft press conference.

But I looked them up and yes, they play with the WNBA.

R2, they're in college, and recently decided to go pro.
The WNBA college draft was last night, and the young ladies glammed it up for their big day.

Angel Reese is a douche but she could be a DL legend. She made the announcement she was entering the draft via Vogue.

I thought Caitlyn looked okay on SNL last week but surprised she doesn't have a better stylist.

You know, even masculine looking Brittany Griner could be a model.
With her height and slender build, all she needs is the right styling.
Brittany has an androgynous look which could work well in modeling.

That must be striking to see in person.
Here's a nice article about Cameron.
Both of her parents played college basketball.
And a fun fact: she said she was always a girly girl, and never wanted to play basketball when she was younger. But her parents forced her. Lol.

R18 I don't know what the sexuality breakdown is for the entire draft this year but the three most popular players all are in pretty public opposite sex relationships. Clark is dating a former Iowa basketball player who now works for the Pacers organization, Cameron Brinks is dating another male athlete and Angel Reese was dating another basketball player and just recently broke up with him.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 16, 2024 7:33 PM |
R15, she's a beast on the court, but I just don't like her. If she were Black people would drag her like they do Angel.

caitlin is phenomenal and will bring huge crowds with her. she broke 45 different records this past year. She broke the record for the most points ever in college basketball, men or women. She led the nation in both scoring and assists. She went to two national championships back to back. They ended up losing both, but this is an Iowa team that without her would've been lucky to make it to the tournament at all. She played without a true center this entire season. This year she will be playing with Aaliyah Boston and I can't wait to see what they can do together. And she sells out Arenas everywhere she goes. Last year the Indiana Fever averaged about 5000 fans per game. Last night 17,000 people showed up at their arena just to watch a telecast of the draft. her jersey sold out in the first hour of her pick and she has sold more jerseys on draft night than any other player in any other professional draft, including the NFL and NBA. She may not dominate the league in the first year, but she is a cultural phenom and a great basketball player.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 16, 2024 8:14 PM |
And I truly believe that JuJu Watkins will follow in the Phenom department. NCAA womens basketball is in good shape.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 16, 2024 8:45 PM |
yeah JuJu is great
by Anonymous | reply 24 | April 16, 2024 8:48 PM |
But is WNBA basketball in good shape? Sue Bird was talking on NPR last week about how college phenoms don't necessarily bring huge crowds to the WNBA. That said, many commentators have made that same point and still concluded that Caitlin Clark will probably change that - at least for an initial period, hopefully longer. I think we can all agree that there's going to be a big initial surge when Clark starts playing - but will it continue for years on end. Clark and Boston should be sensational together.

by Anonymous | reply 26 | April 16, 2024 9:03 PM |
I don't think that the WNBA viewership will rival anything that we saw in the final four. But I think we will see a definite increase in ticket sales, memorabilia, and viewership. Hopefully they will capitalize on this and start more expansion. There are far more talented players than open roster spots right now. it's never going to put up NBA numbers, but I think it's in a pretty healthy place overall and the financial future of the league is better than ever.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | April 16, 2024 9:19 PM |
I think the sports media is still to figure out how to market the women, focusing on building brands out of superstars.
Or maybe it’s how Instagram has allowed high school female athletes to build and connect with a national fan base.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | April 16, 2024 9:20 PM |
we are saying a big increase in interest of female sports. Women's soccer is having record-breaking attendance. Women are getting bigger contracts than ever. Women's volleyball is selling out football stadiums in Nebraska. A new professional women's ice hockey league started this year and they are selling out almost every game. This year, the women's College Basketball national championship game between Iowa and South Carolina drew more viewers than the men's championship game.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 16, 2024 9:24 PM |
I actually appreciate that these young women got all glammed up for this event.
To me, it's the epitome of female empowerment when you can be a strong athlete, but you can also fearlessly show your feminine side.
It's not all this "fake badassness" you see on television, with the faux bravado and women trying to be just like men.
This is real life. These women truly ARE strong and powerful, but they are equally feminine.
That IS badass, in my humble opinion.

Maybe this new exposure will help to raise the salaries in the WNBA.
They get paid only a tiny fraction of what NBA players make.
For example:
[quote] Caitlin Clark wore a $17,000 Prada outfit to the WNBA draft. That's about 22% of her expected first-year salary.
WNBA top draft pick is expected to make $76,535 in her first year.
NBA top draft pick is expected to make $10,000,000 per year.
That's a huge difference.

by Anonymous | reply 45 | April 17, 2024 1:48 AM |
Gymnastics and figure skating have also had substantial slides in viewership. Womens college gymnastics is also very popular and nationals are this weekend but there is no way they will even approach this year's womens basketball ratings.
Volleyball has siphoned off a lot of the girls who might have gone into basketball. They have similar athletes: tall, long, explosive. But compare the two, especially if you're a young girl picking her sport. There's basketball, with running in practice, contact, fans that scream at refs and other parents and ugly uniforms. Or there's volleyball, with no running, no contact, polite crowds (because no one really understands the game) and spandex shorts.
When I was a kid, I watched Roller Derby because women were on TV in "sports" every week. I couldn't imagine a Sunday without Joan Weston battling Ann Calvello from Kezar Pavilion in Golden Gate Park.

Clark most likely was making more than 70 grand while in college from her NIL deals. A lot more. She will now make her millions from advertising and endorsements.
Middle America+White+ wholesome appearing + straight with a boyfriend+ being a Swifty+ very talented =not Taylor Swift money but more than any DL will make. She is going to make a shitload of cash.
Are the other girls that were drafted straight as suggested above or are they just getting better advice on how to dress and present so they can also cash in on better deals?
Anyone that has coached girls or woman’s sports knows that lesbians punch way above their weight in sports. Way above. I’d vote for less straight and better advice for many of these girls.

Young girls who play sports score high on just about every positive measurement you would want to use compared to girls who don’t play sports.
Less unintended pregnancy , less depression, better overall health, better body self image, better self confidence, much better time management, etc etc etc.
This works for girls, it would also work for young gay males, it just works.

The Indiana Fever and the Indiana Pacers share a homecourt. The Pacers have just advanced in the playoffs and will face the Knicks in the next round. Game 6 is currently scheduled in Indianapolis on May 16th. The Fever's home opener is also on May 16th in the same arena. It sounds crazy to say out loud but I think it's likely that the NBA will alter the schedule of one of their playoff games in deference to a WNBA regular season game. I expect the NBA will switch the Pacers-Knicks match to the 15th
by Anonymous | reply 81 | May 3, 2024 6:58 AM |

R82 Their courts are different. The three-point line is in a different location. I don't think they could have that quick of a turnover. But looking at the extended NBA schedule some more I actually think it works be pretty easy for them to move the Pacers one day back. Give them an extra day of rest.

R81: Where are you seeing that Game 6 of the Knicks/Pacers series is scheduled on May 16th? On NBA.com & ESPN.com, the dates for Games 5, 6 & 7 (if necessary) are listed as "TBD".
In any case...if there's scheduling conflict at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on the 16th, there is NO WAY the NBA would schedule Game 6 on the 15th!! Game 4 is on Sunday 5/12 in Indianapolis. Then, they travel to NYC for Game 5, and back to Indy for Game 6 (if necessary). While a team might play three games in four days during the regular season, the NBA doesn't do that shit during the playoffs. Game 6 (if needed) will likely be on the 17th or 18th.

It takes about 1.5 - two hours to switch over courts in an arena. Staples Center (Crypto) has lots of practice doing this, being shared by the Lakers & Clippers for the past 20 years (not to mention the WNBA Sparks & NHL Kings). There have been many occasions (Sundays) where the Clippers played at 12:30 pm and then Lakers played at 6:30 pm. I think that's the closest you can schedule them.

I saw that the Iowa coach was leaving, but had not seen who was taking over. Wonder how Iowa will do know. They did have some really good years (not as big Clark taking them to the final) pre-Clark. I think they made the Elite Eight one year.

R104 Jan has been there for decades, primarily working with post players. Hannah might be in for a breakout year. They will also have a highly rated freshman and a great transfer in Lucy Olsen. I don't think they are Final Four material next year but they will be decent, maybe ranking in the bottom of the Top 25

spacing is off, movement is off. It's a slower tempo with not a lot of inside/outside play. It should have been expected though, there is a reason that they got the number one pick. this is going to take at least half a season to figure out. I hope the coach is up for it. This is her first head coaching gig in the league

I was surprised that how badly Aaliyah Boston has played in the first two preseason games and tonight. I know she had a great year last year and I'm hoping the team find a rhythm and they develop pick and roll game. But she only had four points tonight and has just been surprisingly slow so far this season.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | May 15, 2024 3:48 AM |
R118 they are, and they will continue if she keeps on making plays that got her on SportsCenter in Iowa. But people will start tuning out if they keep on running plays with her off the ball and not getting her touches. If they slow the game down people will start to move on. It's still very early on, but I think interest will wane for a year or two until she hits her stride in the league and then it will slowly build up again. Or I could be completely wrong, and she'll end up being a rookie phenom and interest will continue to grow. I'm hoping for that.

another disastrous game for Indiana. Starting to think the coach may not even last the season. Caitlin barely shot. Her turnover to assist ratio greatly increased tonight. she was closing in on a triple double. But they had her standing off the ball with very little movement. For some reason they're not giving the ball to her to push up. None of the players seem to run the floor very well. Aliyah Boston was completely outmatched again today.

WNBA Star Rebecca Lobo told by kid's league referee "This is a grown man's game, not a woman's game"
by Anonymous | reply 128 | May 18, 2024 5:25 PM |
Legendary women's basketball star and ESPN analyst Rebecca Lobo encountered a disheartening instance of sexism that she shared with fans on social media.
"Something happened to me that's never happened before," she said while beginning her story.
Lobo was coaching her 15-year-old son's AAU team and one of her players was knocked down. Naturally, she reacted, yelling "That's a foul!" which drew a technical foul from one official. Nothing out of the ordinary there. But then the other referee approached Lobo.
"So as the kid on the other team is shooting a free throw, the other ref came over and said, 'Your kid slipped,'" Lobo said. "And I said, 'He didn't slip; he got fouled.'"
Lobo explained that she responded in a normal tone of voice and volume. Despite not yelling, that prompted a response that still surprised the UConn star and WNBA All-Star as she recapped the incident.
"And this ref, a man, looked at me and said, 'This is a grown man's game. This is not a women's game,'" she said, still in disbelief that this happened in 2024.
The first question that comes to mind is, did that referee realize who he was talking to? Lobo is one of the biggest stars in women's basketball, winning the 1995 national championship with UConn and getting her jersey number retired by the school. She won a gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. She played six seasons in the WNBA, including its inaugural campaign.
Never mind that that referee was also officiating a game involving 15-year-old athletes. Not yet "grown men" out there on the court.

today was much better from Indiana and Clark. They had a rematch against the liberty and lost by 11 points. The last game they lost by over 30. Clark had a new career high and looked good. Her field goal percentage was good and she has her swagger back. she also had 9 assists and 6 rebounds. Her passes were crisp. Her turnovers were kept under control, and a majority of them were good passes that her teammates couldn't handle. They're going to get it together eventually.

[quote] Who Is Cameron Brink's Boyfriend? All About His Relationship With the WNBA Star
Cameron Brink’s boyfriend, Ben Felter, has been especially supportive of her career as an athlete himself.
The Los Angeles Sparks star has been dating Felter for over three years after meeting at Stanford University, where they were both student-athletes. After graduating in 2024, Brink signed with the Sparks as the second pick in the WNBA draft in April and made her professional debut the following month.
Felter also graduated in 2024 after competing on the school’s rowing team. He’s been supportive of Brink’s career since, posting a photo of her at the draft with purple and yellow hearts in honor of the Sparks’ colors.
So who is Cameron Brink’s boyfriend? Here’s everything to know about Ben Felter and his relationship with the athlete.
Originally from Palo Alto, Calif., Felter signed to Stanford in October 2019 as a member of their rowing team. In his junior year, he was starboard, rowing in the No. 5 seat on Stanford's second Varsity Eight at the IRA Championships, per his athlete bio.
Felter was also a two-time IRCA scholar-athlete and was on the honor roll throughout his college experience.
In addition to rowing, Felter spent his time in college studying computer science, resulting in a number of internships, per his LinkedIn. He worked as a software engineer at Kaladin, a cryptocurrency startup, in the summer before his junior year.
As of August 2022, he started working at the Defense Innovative Unit, which is part of the U.S. Department of Defense, where he is now a portfolio analyst part-time.

by Anonymous | reply 145 | May 23, 2024 2:48 AM |
Seattle is destroying Indiana in the first quarter, and I have no idea what the Fever are doing with Clark. They had a good last game with Clark running the offense. Tonight she is barely touching the ball, they are treating her like a spot up shooter and not a point guard. I don't get it. let's see how they respond.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | May 23, 2024 3:24 AM |
whew... this Indiana coaching. in the 3rd quarter they let Clark run the offense and they started cooking. They stormed back and took the lead in the 4th. Then they sat Clark for an extended period and immediately lost the lead. Fever brought her in with just a few minutes left, far too late but she did pull them back to within one point before they lost.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | May 23, 2024 5:15 AM |
Indiana needs to fire that idiot coach, R147.
She doesn't have a clue.
I think she's trying to be fair to the other players and not let the newbie Clark have all of the playing time.
But the question is, does she want to be fair or does she want to win?
If she doesn't want to win, then Clark should go play for a different team.
Or fire the coach.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | May 23, 2024 5:18 AM |
R148 this is her first head coaching position, and it shows. I wouldn't be surprised if the GM steps in at some point. And I know Boston has not been playing particularly great but she is far to good to only play 14 minutes this game. I don't understand any decision making or play calls. they sat Clark with five minutes left in a tie game. They didn't bring her in until they squandered any momentum and were down seven. She almost rescued them, but the whole thing is bizarre.

The Fever needed this tonight! They got their first win. Boston finally had a good night. Mitchell showed up. Fagbenle and Clark are getting some really really nice movements going. over 19,000 people showed up which broke a record for Los Angeles. And they went nuts when Clark hit two huge three-pointers at the end of the game. It was almost like a home game for Indiana. Clark got her first double double today and almost a triple double. She ended up with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists. Her passing was really sharp and she kept her turnovers down. Her shooting was off, but she came up huge in the final couple of minutes hitting really long three-pointers. And on the bench, they were laughing and seemed like they were connecting as teammates. I think with all the outside noise they're starting to bond together. They'll probably lose tomorrow against the Aces, but their schedule gets easier after that.

R152, don't think much of basketball Twitter understands the jump from NCAA to the pros; some people maybe even crazily thinking NCAA is harder than the pros. The talent level is so concentrated in the WNBA, so (1) offense will be more distributed; Clark's team isn't expecting her to just shoot threes from way out and score 45 points like she did sometimes at Iowa; and (2) the defense and game plans overall and for Clark are much better - she's not going to get as many clean looks when she is given the chance to score. She's adjusted fine to the WNBA and is playing pretty well.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | May 27, 2024 5:39 PM |
Clark had a really good game today. The Fever still suck. Clark had 30 points 5 rebounds 5 assists and 3 blocks. she was cooking early on in the third. And the Fever were out to a 7 point lead. The coach sat her for 4 minutes and the other team went on a 11-0 run and took the lead back. The Fever could never catch up after that.

R157 a sports reporter at the game tonight said that the fans leaving the game tonight were angry and he heard lots of them talking about replacing the coach. there were also a few moments in tonight's game where Clark was wide open behind the three-point line and her teammates weren't getting her the ball. Through the TV you could hear the crowd yelling at the players to pass to her. There's definitely some frustration going on with the playcalling. The WNBA season is so short that they don't often have coaching changes mid season, but this might be the exception. there's been at least three games this season where Clark has gotten real momentum for the team and then the coach sits her for several minutes and the momentum dies.

Clark is great, no doubt. But people are acting like any team with her on it is supposed to be great. The WNBA is a small, "tight" league - the general level of player is so high because there's so few of them. She was a top pick, so naturally went to a previously lower performing team. The fans need to give it some time. Do they believe that she's massively better than every other player and Indiana would just win, win, win?

[quote] Cameron Brink Breaks Down in Tears After Learning She Made the U.S. Olympic Team for 3x3 Basketball
Between finishing out her senior season at Stanford and getting selected No. 2 overall in the WNBA draft, Cameron Brink's spring has been full of big moments — and now her summer is going to get even bigger.
With less than two months until the 2024 Paris Olympics, Team USA Basketball announced Wednesday, June 5 that Brink made the 3x3 team.
In a video posted to the USA 3x3 Basketball Instagram account, the Los Angeles Sparks player was notified by the team’s officials that she is officially going to Paris this summer and the heartfelt moment instantly brought her to tears.
“It was absolutely surreal, I was not expecting this whatsoever, but I’ve worked really hard for this. I love the coaches, the committee, everything, so I’m just beyond thankful,” Brink, 22, said in the video. “I’m most excited to be an Olympian, it’s been a dream my whole life and the opportunity to win a gold medal, especially with this group. So, you know, I honestly can’t even put it to words. It’s insane.”
Other players who made the team and were notified on video, included Hailey Van Lith and Cierra Burdick. Upon receiving her Olympic jersey, Van Lith said, “The emotions, they can’t really be described. A lot of joy, a lot of gratitude. Excited to wear USA across my chest and be in Paris for the first time.”

[quote] Former WNBA owner Kelly Loeffler says Caitlin Clark could save league from 'errors of its way'
EXCLUSIVE– A former WNBA owner who knows about controversy off the court said star Caitlin Clark could be a transcendent figure that brings the league away from divisive cultural debates and back to hoops.
Former Georgia Sen. Kelly Loeffler, who co-owned the Atlanta Dream from 2011 to 2021, told Fox News Digital the rookie sensation has been widely celebrated because "she's 100% basketball."
"She's not about politics," Loeffler said. "That's what people want when they purchase tickets, when they spend their family's hard-earned money and time to go to a game. They want to see pure athletic competition, the best of the best. And I think Caitlin is the best chance to get back to that."
Loeffler may be the best-known owner of a WNBA squad after her Dream players revolted against her Republican politics in 2020. After she was appointed to an open Georgia Senate seat in 2019, she spoke out against the WNBA's embrace of Black Lives Matter during her run in a special election the following year. In return, her players sported t-shirts supporting her Democratic opponent Raphael Warnock, creating a media frenzy.
Then-Atlanta owner Kelly Loeffler (right) talks with Dream General Manager Chris Sienko (left) during the WNBA game between the Las Vegas Aces and the Atlanta Dream on Sept. 5, 2019 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, GA. WNBA GREAT RIPS MEDIA OUTLETS OVER ANGEL REESE COVERAGE AFTER FLAGRANT FOUL ON CAITLIN CLARK: 'NASTY WORK'
The Dream's public spurning of its owner followed years of the league being better known for espousing progressive causes than any on-court achievements, all the while hemorrhaging money and enduring scorn for low player salaries and attendance.
But now Clark, a player from the heartland who led the University of Iowa to consecutive national championship appearances and became the all-time leading scorer in Division I history, has brought unprecedented attention and ratings for the league. And Loeffler couldn't be happier for Clark and what she means to the league she loves.
"Caitlin Clark is the best thing to happen to the WNBA in its history," Loeffler told Fox News Digital. "And she has brought so much attention, so many benefits to the league. The players for years have wanted to fly chartered private flights. They now have that thanks to Caitlin Clark. They now have arenas that are selling out, or at least selling thousands of tickets. They now have attention on a world stage that they never had thanks to Caitlin Clark."
"And I think there's a real opportunity for the league to kind of bounce back from some of the errors of its way, you know, starting in 2020, when they stopped being about basketball and being more focused on pushing partisan politics and really alienated a lot of people. And I think this is a great chance to say, hey, we are about basketball, we're about the quality of the game. We're about elevating players from all walks of life."

Clark is really starting to figure the league out. She just tied the record for most 15/5/5 games as a rookie. They still have over half the season left to play. No rookie in the WNBA has EVER had a triple double, she nearly had one last night, and it's only a matter of time until she does. she is averaging over 15/5/5 a game, every player who has ever done that for a season has been named to the all WNBA first team, a ranking of the top five players in the league. And she's almost certainly going to win rookie of the year.

[quote] Indiana Fever fire head coach Christie Sides after Caitlin Clark’s historic rookie season
The Indiana Fever have fired head coach Christie Sides after two seasons, the WNBA team announced Sunday.
Sides led Indiana to its first postseason appearance since 2016 with the help of the 2024 Rookie of the Year Caitlin Clark, who had a historic season. The Fever were 20-20 in the regular season.
“We are incredibly thankful to Coach Sides for embracing the challenge of leading us through an integral transition period over the last two seasons, while also positioning us well for future growth,” Fever President of Basketball Operations Kelly Krauskopf said in a statement.
“While decisions like these are never easy, it is also imperative that we remain bold and assertive in the pursuit of our goals, which includes maximizing our talent and bringing another WNBA championship back to Indiana.”
As for Clark, the 22-year-old became the first rookie in 16 years to be named to the All-WNBA first team while setting the league single-season assists record, an accomplishment which included a WNBA-record 19 assists in one game. Her 8.4 assists per game average is also a WNBA record.
She also became the first ever rookie to record a triple-double and holds the record for most three-pointers made (122) by a rookie in league history.
“Coach Sides was an incredible representative of the Fever and our community, and we wish her nothing but success in the future,” Krauskopf added.
Sides had a 33-47 regular season record during her tenure. Indiana was swept in the first round of the 2024 playoffs by the Connecticut Sun.
In Sides’ first season on the bench, forward Aliyah Boston won the 2023 Rookie of the Year award.

The Fever have hired Stephanie White! She is a great hire, she was coach of the year at Connecticut. She also played for the Fever and coached them during their last championship run. She is very impressive and is a huge Clark fan. They also changed up the entire front office management team and basketball operation team. They are trying hard to go for a championship in the next couple years.
