Greatest Goth Chick

Love both ladies, but do you have a preference or another favorite?

Thought of adding Joan Jett, but she's not really a true Goth.

Boycotting this thread because Siouxsie wasn't included. Amateur.

by Anonymousreply 1April 10, 2024 5:25 AM

Ashamed to say I had never heard Miss Bush's Wuthering Heights until last night, despite loving her voice. Don't know why. It is exquisite.

Stevie Nicks' Talk To Me was the anthem of a very lonely babygay.

by Anonymousreply 2April 10, 2024 5:26 AM

R1, you are right...I should have included her and Shakespeare's Sister.

But does Siouxsie really have Kate or Stevie's voice?

by Anonymousreply 3April 10, 2024 5:29 AM

Lesbian goths are the best

I agree it's obviously Siouxsie.

Sinead somewhat with an inverted cross. I mean she took on the beast.

by Anonymousreply 5April 10, 2024 5:33 AM

And Elisabeth Fraser, OP.

by Anonymousreply 6April 10, 2024 5:35 AM

Oh OP - where's Siobhan (Shakespears Sister), Siouxsie, Diamanda Galas, Amy Lee, Bat For Lashes - and Stevie is SO not goth.

Oy.

by Anonymousreply 7April 10, 2024 6:43 AM

Janet Jackson

by Anonymousreply 8April 10, 2024 6:55 AM

R1 Came to say that! R3 OP, are you kidding? Does Siouxsie have a voice? Please.

Winona Ryder. Especially from 1987 thru 1991 she defined the look for Gen X teens.

by Anonymousreply 11April 10, 2024 8:49 AM

FAIL!

Neither Kate or Stevie have ever been considered Goth. NEVER. NEVER. NEVER.

Siouxsie Sioux is the absolute Goth Goddess.

Honorable mentions: Nina Hagen Lene Lovich Danielle Dax Elizabeth Fraser, Cocteau Twins Lisa Gerrard, Dead Can Dance Diamanda Galás (who was an early ally during the AIDS crisis) Dinah Cancer, 45 Grave

Yes this is a fail. Neither Stevie nor Kate are goth icons.

by Anonymousreply 15April 10, 2024 10:01 AM

Eh...I think Kate has plenty of crossover goth appeal. What is more goth than a song about Wuthering Heights? Goths love dark romanticism. But OP is still a fool for not nominating Siouxsie.

by Anonymousreply 16April 10, 2024 10:31 AM

Hedging R16. Kate and Stevie are not the 2 "go-to goth icons".

by Anonymousreply 17April 10, 2024 10:37 AM

These bitches.

Tied with Juice Newton.

Johnette, a little bit. She's a badass, nonetheless. Long live Concrete Blonde.

Neither Bush or Nicks are Goth. They're both more hippy-dippy, witchy types with the flowing capes and skirts.

by Anonymousreply 20April 10, 2024 3:53 PM

Stevie has that witch aesthetic but yeah, she's no goth, in any way. She's just massive coke head with billowing skirts vibe.

OP - Here's a video of Siouxsie performing live in 1983, for reference. She is basically the reason the goth look exists.

Just to add, I believe Stevie Nicks calls herself a white witch. Goth is a black witch. All occult is not Goth.

You're closer with Kate Bush since Wuthering Heights is the classic Gothic novel. But still, she's not quite.

I'll just throw this one out there - Jayne Mansfield. Lol.

There's no way Kate Bush is a goth OP you knob.

by Anonymousreply 26April 10, 2024 4:42 PM

R14 Great list. I'd also add Patricia Morrison who used to sing with Sisters of Mercy.

by Anonymousreply 27April 10, 2024 4:47 PM

Ah of course! Andrew and Patricia.

I wouldn't consider either of them Goth, hon. Kate's only slightly Goth adjacent but Stevie is definitely a Pop star.
