ABSOLUTELY THE BEST TRAILER EVER. The way they used the music- I am so excited.
I love Ty West and I think this chick is one of the great younger actors today-
This looks insane.

I liked both X and Pearl, this will surely be interesting.

This looks excellent. Like the grimy, gritty feel to the cinematography.

I think The Night Stalker unpinning of this will be perfect-

As much as I love the '80s, I feel like it's been heavily exploited in recent years, especially in the horror genre; that being said, I was a huge fan of both "X" and "Pearl", and have no doubt this will be fantastic. It's probably my most anticipated movie of the year.

Neither X nor Pearl sounded interesting enough for me to bother checking them out, but this is a great trailer and I will for sure be seeing the movie.

I know nothing of the director, his work, or his lead actress. But I'm down for this, and possibly at least the other two films in the trilogy. I tend to watch more films from the past, so I don't keep up with the here-and-now in film. This appeals to me. Thanks, OP.

r16 ....apparently lived through them in a coma

Sorry to say, I didn’t. Reagan, homeless dumped into the streets, crass yuppies, the rise of political evangelicalism, AIDS, cheesy tv and movies.
You were obviously overjoyed by that vulgar, dark time though, r17. Or you didn’t live through it at all. Either way, sad!

If it turns out Maxine is the killer because she developed a split personality based on Pearl as result of trauma from the events of X I'm walking out of the theater.
Hate those tired old cliches.

I thought X was a better horror movie than Pearl, because you already knew that Pearl was a killer. However Mia was amazing in Pearl. I somehow assumed that Maxine would be the killer when they announced the movie.

r18 its not that serious. they were talking about appreciating the aesthetics of the era, which were a reaction to the politics, not the politics themselves.

Saw this at an “early access” screening last night (they normally do this on a Thursday but didn’t because today is a holiday). Theater was probably 75% full.
I loved “X” and “Pearl”, but wasn’t sold on this based on the trailer. I ended up having a hell of a lot of fun with it though. It is perfect popcorn entertainment—witty, gory, glam, and gritty. It’s more ridiculous in tone than the other two films. Goth is great in it, and Kevin Bacon has a great part as a sleazy PI. Parts of it feel like a giallo almost, but it’s really an ode to LA grindhouse fodder like “Hollywood Boulevard” or “Angel”. I enjoyed it for what it was.

All these films are reductive. It’s the same thing Ryan Murphy does. They’re take from a million films that came before it. None of it is original. A24 films are pisspoor. They’re not arthouse.

R22- Your review made me happy. The fan reviews have been polite but no one appears very happy. Basically a disappointing 3rd act and not very surprising reveal. But the first 2/3 is pretty solid. That's the concensus.
I loved both X and Pearl, and the lukewarm reviews have lowered by expectations on this one to allow me to enjoy it anyway! And I really think that Mia Goth will be a huge star. She has talent, charisma, and a weirdness that makes her very special.
The critics have given it good 3 star reviews..

Saw it last night at Alamo Drafthouse. Sold out fun crowd. They showed grindhouse trailers before the film and did a funny recap of the first two movies. I enjoyed Maxxxine but Pearl is my favorite. Great costumes, Elizabeth Debnecki is gorgeous, Bobby Canavale can eternally get it, and the soundtrack rocks. That said, the serial killer was obvious from the beginning and I thought the ending was a bit lackluster. Still, a fun gory summer flick that I’d watch again.

I'm going to watch this on Sunday. X and Pearl were both great, so I've been looking forward to this. The reaction has been interesting in how different all the opinions are.

I know they're supporting roles, but it was a lot of fun seeing Michelle Monaghan and Bobby Canavale paired as the LAPD homicide detectives in this. Canavale is still hot as fuck, and I feel like I don't see Monaghan in a lot of stuff these days. They were both great I thought. The whole cast delivered, really.

R22 here. I went and saw it again tonight for the hell of it. It was just as much fun the second time. Watching it again, I can say it really is not much of a horror film. It is more of a mystery with a couple of murders here and there. Very '80s LA neo-noir/giallo. As I mentioned above, "Angel", "Hollywood Boulevard", and even "Hardcore" seem to be big influences. There's a little bit of "Vice Squad" and Brian De Palma's "Body Double" in there too, which I didn't pick up on during the first viewing.
I still think the finale/reveal is a bit ridiculous all things considered, but again, the whole thing is just so much fucking fun, and you get the feeling that everyone was having a lot of fun making it. Plus, any film whose end credits start out with Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes" playing over a prop severed head gets my stamp of approval.

R22 I’m going tomorrow and I can’t wait. I loved X, enjoyed Pearl but I’m really looking forward to this one. All of your comps have pushed my enthusiasm over the top.

"MaXXXine" now is on HBO and I watched it last night.
It's both hugely entertaining and the least of the trilogy. But Ti West does a great job recreating the sights and the feel of sleazy 1980s Hollywood — the boulevard, the porn palaces, the video rental stores. Mia Goth is great, as always, and Kevin Bacon gets a great campy, hammy role as an unscrupulous P.I. from New Orleans.
But the big reveal toward the end is no surprise to anyone who's ever seen a movie before, and it's far less satisfying than anything that came before it.
Basically it's a 1980s trashy erotic thriller that's a tribute to other 1980s trashy erotic thrillers, along with a ton of references to other movies throughout (Chinatown, Angel, Psycho, any '80s Brian de Palma vehicle). I enjoyed it.
