I swear the breaks between shows are so long now it's easy to forget them.
Is Somebody, Somewhere getting a third season?
by Anonymous | reply 137 | December 23, 2024 2:53 PM |
Filming for season three wrapped last month. There has been no announcement on when it will air.

Third (and sadly final) season premiere date announced.

I hope it's funnier than season 2. I didn't laugh once.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | August 27, 2024 2:07 AM |
It was cute enough, but nothing I'm dying to see more of.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 27, 2024 2:20 AM |
Yes, new season late October! Our favorite Kansans are coming back.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 27, 2024 2:22 AM |
We loved season two. Laughed our asses off.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 27, 2024 2:28 AM |
I love it.

I watched the first 4 episodes of season one and keep forgetting to catch up and watch more, now I will.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 27, 2024 2:34 AM |
I thought season 2 was even better than season 1.

At least retards have their own show

R13 so you have a public access show? Good for you
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 27, 2024 2:45 AM |
Third season premiere was cute, although I didn't think it was as funny as what we're used to with this show.
Great ending, though. She just keeps collecting those Ls, something's gotta give by the end of the season.

Love this show. I will wait until a few episodes in to start Season 3 so I can watch more at once. This is the only show I have ever watched where the characters feel like friends of mine.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 30, 2024 12:49 PM |
Yeah, that "when's the last time you went to see a doctor?" comment from her sister seems like dark foreshadowing.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | October 30, 2024 12:49 PM |
R24. I was thinking either Brad or Fred.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 30, 2024 1:41 PM |
I think they've announced this will be the final season; would be monumental if they killed the main character off at the end (well, maybe not monumental or groundbreaking--- looking at you Roseanne and Valerie Harper!)
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 30, 2024 1:45 PM |
This show is so painfully sweet and hilarious. I fucking love it and will be sad when it's over.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 30, 2024 1:50 PM |
This show breaks my heart - I know, I Know - MARY! There's a moment where Bridgett Everett is telling Joel how happy she is for him that he is selling his house and putting on a happy face for him, and then we he leaves the room her facial expression subtlety breaks into sadness. I freaking love this show.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 2, 2024 2:05 AM |
I had never heard of this show, 'Somebody Somewhere' until it popped up in my Netflix recommendations today. I decided to give it a shot, and ended up binging all of Season 1, Season 2, and the two episodes currently out in Season 3. I’m hooked!
This show actually made me laugh out loud a few times, which is rare for me. And as much as I usually don't get misty-eyed over TV, this one got to me a couple of times. It’s so beautifully written. Naturally, I had to check what DL thinks, and I'm glad I’m not the only one loving it. Sad to hear it’s the last season, but I get it.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | November 4, 2024 10:38 AM |
That scene with Brad trying to express his feelings to Joel was beautiful. I wanted to smack Fred's wife. Bridget, as always, was honest and extraordinary. This is the kind of show that never finds a big audience and never wins awards. It's just too good.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | November 4, 2024 11:14 AM |
Damn, this season is really building up to something dark. It's heartbreaking to watch, how Sam is made to feel like she's this imposition on all her friends, a loser who just brings everyone down. That scene where Brad tells her Joel had told him about her money problems and offers her a loan made her feel like a leech, I'm sure.
Joel is right that relationships (and marriage) are about compromise, but he's drowning in compromises at this point. Especially compared to Brad, who seems to have just subsumed him into his established routine (great juxtaposition between Sam and the church ladies). Joel didn't even think that not going to church is a possibility, that's how much Brad has overpowered his priorities in life.
But yes, the song was really cute.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | November 4, 2024 12:49 PM |
The scene when she finds out Pepper the dog has been adopted was a tear jerker for me.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 4, 2024 1:24 PM |
I forgot to mention the moment when she sees the whole setup Brad has going for him and Joel every morning and realises she might never have that herself. Feeling like an intruder, she leaves. She'll end up with the Icelandic bear, surely?
r32 Yeah, that was tough, I was so certain Pepper was going to be a season regular.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 4, 2024 1:43 PM |
She will totally end up with that renter from Iceland. The scene where she met Pepper had me tearing up (Mary).
by Anonymous | reply 34 | November 4, 2024 2:09 PM |
Would a breed like Pepper's really be at a shelter? I assume they're pretty expensive.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | November 4, 2024 2:13 PM |
I also agree she'll end up with the Icelander. Still not convinced that line about her not having been to a doctor in years wasn't a foreshadowing.
Or perhaps Brad and Joel don't work out and she ends up living with Joel, which would also help her financial situation.
There's definitely a lot going on two episodes in. I adore this show.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | November 4, 2024 2:17 PM |
I thought Brad's song was going to be cringe as hell, but the lyrics were actually quite beautiful. Still, I don't like public displays of affection like those, seems too intimate somehow.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | November 4, 2024 2:22 PM |
R35. Sadly, sometimes dogs like Pepper do end up at shelters because their owners die and they have nowhere else to go. It seems he wasn't there very long. I'm going to predict Brad dies suddenly. Joel finally finds love and it's taken away from him.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | November 4, 2024 3:23 PM |
Sad to hear that this is the final season.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | November 4, 2024 3:25 PM |
I wish this had been given another season- a truly lovely show. When I think of the money hbo/max or whatever the fuck it’s called pisses away on crap like numerous dragons/thrones or how much they spend on And Just Like That it makes me angry.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | November 4, 2024 3:29 PM |
They manage to wring out so much profundity out of small moments in a small town.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | November 4, 2024 3:32 PM |
HBO could have canceled this after the first season. It's not a ratings blockbuster like GOT. They gave us three seasons and I'm grateful we got those.

Sam snapping and telling Joel what's what was great to see. She's not used to Joel doing that couples thing where you tell each other absolutely everything, she's losing him to Brad. Speaking of, Brad keeps subtly lording his power over Joel – the way he just ordered him to wait until he finished reading, and using that two dads mug even though he knows Joel had to give up his dream of having kids... Also, the way he said "I just love it here" at the bar means he's starting to slowly hate it at home. I can't see this working out in the end.
I feel like Tricia's gonna get MeToo'd at that lily-white country club.
Icelandic bear doesn't seem the least bit interested in Sam, it's interesting to see that kind of dynamic.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | November 11, 2024 12:54 PM |
The scene last night between Joel and the guy who, obviously, bullied him in school in why I love this show and these actors. Very little was spoken but the pain on Joel's face and the look of remorse on the bully's face said it all.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | November 19, 2024 1:13 AM |
Love this show.

Iceland will be getting more screen time. Still curious how Sam could tell what Trisha's issue was from a nanosecond glance.

Still in the middle of S2 so I'll skip reading recent comments
but
I did love the Cunt pillows. hilarious
by Anonymous | reply 50 | November 19, 2024 4:38 AM |
r47 Yes, I loved how almost wordlessly that bully scene was done. I also loved how Brad overpowering Joel was (seemingly) resolved with a simple conversation at the end of the episode. No big dramatic moment or a divorce like you'd expect in other shows, sometimes a conversation with one person clearly stating what they want does the trick.
And of course I loved Sam wanting to take a quick nap at the expo show. Exactly me at any given conference.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | November 19, 2024 5:11 AM |
The fraus on Reddit weren't a happy bunch last week because Sam's fatness became a storyline. Apparently, they didn't enjoy that being turned into "an issue" and that her doctor was borderline mistreating her because she said she was going to take care of her. I guess physicians are just there to do the absolute minimum to keep you alive, but can otherwise never show any actual concern for you and your health.
I suppose wanting to get healthy and see old age isn't a realistic thing that ever happens among fat people. Also, they make it sound as if Bridget wasn't involved in the writing of this show and had this arc foisted on her. I also wonder if this week's exercise intro triggered them all over again.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | November 19, 2024 5:24 AM |
It would be refreshing if Sam doesn’t end up with Iceland and they are just friends at the end of the series. I’m happy that so far this season there hasn’t been a major fight with Joel where they stop talking. That seemed to be the formula for the past two seasons. Then they make up in the last episode.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | November 21, 2024 12:53 PM |
Sam and Joel have shared very few scenes together this season, I wonder if there was a schedule conflict.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | November 21, 2024 1:40 PM |
It was interesting hearing Sam say she wished she were as confident as her sister. She's so jolly when she's around other people, you wouldn't think she'd have confidence problems, would you. Or maybe that's just an issue in the romantic area of her life.
I also hope she doesn't end up with Iceland, although the latest episode shows her absolutely smitten with him, so I don't think the show would be so nasty to take that away from her at the very end of its run.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | November 21, 2024 1:47 PM |
The actor who plays Joel did an outstanding job in the scene with his bully.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | November 21, 2024 3:02 PM |
The bully scene was really well done. I wish this show got more traction in award ceremonies
by Anonymous | reply 57 | November 21, 2024 3:57 PM |
R52-This is, after all, a doctor in Manhattan, Kansas, and not Manhattan NYC.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | November 21, 2024 4:00 PM |
That bully scene probably didn't register much with most straight viewers, but it really resonated with me. I too have occasionally given a thought as to how I'd react if I ever met my childhood bullies again. I want to say I'd pretend like I had no idea what they were talking about if they apologised to me – even acknowledging the abuse means giving it and them power over you, after all – but then I think back to that "It doesn't take much (to get you back into your child self headspace)" line from All of Us Strangers and I just don't know anymore. I think I'd end up reacting about the same as Joel.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | November 21, 2024 4:11 PM |
Lots of straight people have been bullied, R59.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | November 21, 2024 4:35 PM |
Joel told Brad he wants to spend more time with his friends so I think we'll see him with Sam more. Meanwhile, I love her relationship with Trisha.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | November 21, 2024 5:32 PM |
Do women (sisters) have closer relationships with each other? I can't imagine in a million years inspecting my brother's dick for an STD.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | November 21, 2024 6:05 PM |
R62. There was an episode of SATC where Samantha helped Carrie get her diaphragm out of her twat. They made it seem normal.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | November 21, 2024 6:23 PM |
r62 Gurl, if it's an emergency, you *are* going to inspect your brother's dick. And that's exactly what happened here – Tricia was freaking out because she'd never had an STD before, so Sam took one for the team to calm her down.
But yes, women tend to be closer when it comes to reproductive issues, just by design. If you ask a total stranger in a public toilet for an emergency tampon, you're probably gonna get it with a smile and an anecdote about a similar situation on top.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | November 22, 2024 12:05 PM |
I think I would tell my brother to go to the hospital or medical clinic and leave me out of it.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | November 22, 2024 5:18 PM |
Normally (and ideally) we all would, but not if you were at a conference in Kansas City together! People react differently away from home when there's an emergency. You would for sure take a look at his pee-pee, trust me.

by Anonymous | reply 68 | November 22, 2024 8:12 PM |
I'm just glad chlamydia put an end to the possibility of Tricia reuniting with her ex. She should bang that hunk from the country club, just like Sam suggested. After her clam clears up, of course.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | November 22, 2024 8:13 PM |
I refuse to Google what a blue waffle is but is it connected to chlamydia at all? Then the appearance hold be an indicator. I don’t want to look at an diseased vagina or a healthy one
by Anonymous | reply 70 | November 22, 2024 11:51 PM |
[quote]“Blue waffle” is totally, completely, 100% not real. It’s a made up STD and doesn’t actually exist. Anything you’ve heard about it is completely made up. Any pictures you’ve seen on the internet are fake. These fake photos have been photoshopped or are a photo of something else completely different.
[quote]A lot of the symptoms that are supposedly associated with “blue waffle” are most similar to symptoms of a condition called vaginitis. Vaginitis is a really common irritation of the vulva or vagina and can cause you to feel itching, burning, or strange or smelly discharge.

I think nothing huge is really going to happen....this is a show made by "mumblecore" filmmakers so I don't think it's going to get overly dramatic in the last 3 episodes.
My guess is, Sam buys the bar she works at and they turn it into a cool hip hangout.
Which seems quite unlikely for Manhattan, Kansas but ya gotta take artistic license.
I think she MIGHT go on a date with Iceland but that'll be all there is to that.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | November 23, 2024 9:28 AM |
Sam has like 7 bucks in her bank account

I also didn't like how the characters kept laughing at everything as if that made the show funny.

Another scenario, they ALL chip in to buy the bar.

Susan has a cunt pillow (if not a cunt punch) in her future.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | November 25, 2024 4:22 AM |
Yeah, Susan is one of *those* people, barrelling through life like a cunt with her big cunt mouth. You know when someone in your tight friend group gets a horrible new partner that everyone in that group hates, but you can't do anything about it because your friend is in love and so you just have to tolerate them? This is that.
Interesting ending, reveals that everything isn't okay with Joel, even after all those compromises. Was that a "well, this is it" or a "wtf am I doing here" cry? It reminded me of Sam telling him that he was being naive for having all those dreams at his age while living in a small town. I think he's now finally realised what she meant by that.
It was quite comical, the way Icelandic guy was staring at her like she just landed from Mars when she brought him turkey. Put the gal out of her misery already, one way or another.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | November 25, 2024 12:34 PM |
Yeah, Joel's not happy but Brad is such a nice guy he doesn't want to hurt him. Some of us are just not meant to be in relationships no matter how much we think we want one and are happier single.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | November 25, 2024 12:38 PM |
So will Joel settle for unhappiness or break up with Brad?
by Anonymous | reply 82 | November 25, 2024 2:49 PM |
One of the best episodes of the entire series, in my opinion. So much depth and humanity just in simple throwaway lines.
Love how Joel interacted with his podcast. And of course he's the kind of guy who'd be listening to the We Can Do Hard Things podcast.
Sam crying after looking in the mirror struck a chord with me as I also feel like that sometimes – not because of how I look, but because of how my life turned out. "Iceland" talking about how Iceland can get really dark, but is also very beautiful when it's bright in the summer was such a poignant comment on Sam herself. Her reaction to the kiss made me realise she's never had anything like this before. I've never had it either, so I'd probably react the same way.
I'm worried next week's series finale will have that big cancer drive with thousands of people that Sam suggested. I want it to be small and intimate, just like this episode. That's when the show is at its best.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | December 2, 2024 9:21 PM |
Oh, last night's episode was a heartbreaker. I'm going to miss this show so much. Sam not thinking she's worthy of love represents so many of us. That scene with Iceland was just beautiful. I was so glad he gently coaxed her into staying and not running away.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | December 2, 2024 9:43 PM |
It’s a Mary but I’m a tempted to direct message Bridget (not that she would read it) and thank her for Sam.
I see so much of myself in her and it’s uncomfortable but also comforting at the same time.

Another brilliant episode. I have no idea how they're going to tie up all the different threads in the finale. It might end up being the only negative criticism I have for the show, but at the same time it's a sign of how good the writing is. I have no idea where they're going with it and there's only one episode left.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | December 2, 2024 11:51 PM |
I'm guessing it will be a Christmas episode, so all the more emotional...
by Anonymous | reply 87 | December 3, 2024 1:06 AM |

This clueless NPR host interviewed Bridget today about the finale and said he was rooting for her and Joel to kiss. I mean, what the fuck? It's like a soft version of "you just haven't found the right guy yet" that idiots sometimes say to lesbians.
Thankfully, she gave him a back-hander by saying he was the first one on her PR tour to suggest that, and that platonic love can be just as fulfilling as romantic one. I'd wager a guess he doesn't have many female friends.
Obligatory "I don't want this show to end." Dreading Sunday.

Bridget was on WWHL with Andy Cohen last night. A fan asked what she thought about the online petition that’s going around trying to get another season of the show.
She said something to the effect of that the petition was great and sure, why not, another season.
She was non-committed, yet came off grateful..

At the end of this series, everybody's going to be coupled up (except perhaps Trish) and live happily ever after. Just like at the end of Downton Abbey.
Shit makes me sick -- as if "finding a partner" guarantees happiness.
Whatever.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | December 6, 2024 1:23 AM |
Yes, but it's Trish who started out with the perfect family and the seemingly perfect life, which then slowly unravelled over the course of the show.
As a forever single person, that sort of implication you mentioned usually bothers me, but oddly enough not in this instance. Sam's never gonna be super successful in that small town, she barely has any money, so I say just let her have this one win.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | December 6, 2024 5:11 AM |

Best show of the year, per Rolling Stone (Alan Sepinwall).
[quote]Probably made for less than half the cost of the House of the Dragon wig budget, Somebody Somewhere could have easily run for many more years without even David Zaslav’s accountant noticing. Just treasure that we got these 21 remarkable episodes of it.

by Anonymous | reply 105 | December 9, 2024 4:17 AM |
A wonderful finale about small moments of happiness and sadness, which is what the whole show was about.
I will miss Joel. Never been a gay character like him on TV — imperfect, homely, but pretty happy in the world he'd made for himself in flyover country. No spoilers, but he showed in the last episode that growth and being true to yourself in small ways is important.
A minor note, but not since Roseanne have I seen blue-collar people on TV dressed the way real people do — clothes that are well worn but still aren't fitted. Sam's stretched-out T-shirts, Trish's "nice" outfits that obviously came from a mall, Joel's dorky shirts and glasses, Fred's track suits, etc. all felt very authentic.
by Anonymous | reply 106 | December 9, 2024 5:39 AM |
That was a great finale. I found it quite inspirational, actually. What a fantastic show over the 3 seasons. It's so nice to know that there are sensitive people in this world like these characters. There must be, because rral people created them, and then acted them. This world has so much darkness that it feels like it may consume everything. This show has reminded me that it won't.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | December 9, 2024 7:12 AM |
I love how the finale gave her a happy ending with Iceland but at the same time didn't center him, he barely featured at all. The show stayed faithful to its main characters and themes until the very end.
Of course Brad is the kind of person to annoy the pastor with questions about the sermon. Susan gets one final weird comment in and gets mocked for it, loved that.
I admit I often forgot Sam and Tricia had a lesbian sister whose death actually kicked the whole thing off, but they didn't forget about her even in the finale. That "Holly and sadness aren't the same thing" line came out of nowhere and made me tear up. Never looked at grief that way, but it makes so much sense. Tricia's "why do you make it so hard for yourself" hit me hard as well.
This show gives me so much faith in life and I'm going to watch it again in full when I need it the most.

Omg, I just noticed that wasn't Susan at the end there! I love that even more, especially because Sam said "all my favourite people are here."

The finale was perfect. Thank you for such a relatable show.

I don't think the fact that Fred was trans was even mentioned once. It was all about his poor eating habits, taking a partner that his friends didn't like, etc. Give me this over Pose any day.

Susan wasn't a bad person. She was just clueless and needed to think before she spoke. Also, most shows would have killed off the father when the actor playing him passed away but they chose to keep him alive. I love that.

Susan had mentioned something about Fred being trans in Season 2 but she may have not used that word. It was when she was talking about telling her family.

I love how this touching and perfect finale opened with a close-up shot of doggie poop, which they then used as a running joke over the course of the episode. Or that little race to the swings next to the church. Such small relatable moments, when they could have easily gone overboard and done that huge stadium cancer drive I was dreading last week.

I had completely forgotten that "Iceland" was also in Maria Bamford's wonderful Lady Dynamite. As was Bridget Everett! I have to rewatch that fever dream of a show sometime, what a unique experience that was.

[quote] This world has so much darkness that it feels like it may consume everything. This show has reminded me that it won't.
I wanted to say something similar but I couldn't say it any better than quoting R107.

World also has lots of dorkiness on top of darkness. Joel thriving gives hope to us dorks everywhere.

Perfection. I hate to see it go.

That small moment with Joel's HS bully giving him a little wave in the Church parking lot and Joel smiling and waving back made me tear up.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | December 10, 2024 2:23 PM |
Yes! That's real, tangible growth right there. I'll never have that moment with my own bullies – I bullied others in turn as well, btw – but I felt a release through Joel and that's good enough for me.

If there is some HBO intern reading this thread, tell your bosses we want more of Somebody Somewhere. Two more seasons would be nice. Yes, I know they wrapped up all the story lines, but they can still go forward from there. (I do wonder what happened to Sam and Trish's alcoholic mother now in a senior home. She's not dead -- but the actor playing her husband is and he made a phone call.) My other hope is that if HBO doesn't want to do more seasons that some other network will pick it up.

I was afraid when Sam got the phone call from her dad he was going to tell her that her mother died.
I loved they didn’t go there. Instead, they had a fun, lighthearted check-in.

Or when Tricia was on the front porch.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | December 10, 2024 7:04 PM |
I thought Tricia was on the front porch to give her shit about Iceland, I didn't even know that was Holly's place.

Just now watching S3. I forgot how this show can make me laugh and cry. I teared up at a few scenes. I wish the lead actress would lose some weight for her sake as she looks very unhealthy.

R125, what a saint you are to fret over BE’s health.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | December 20, 2024 2:39 AM |
I thought Bridget looked like she had lost weight in season 3. She is very top heavy with giant boobs, and that makes her look bigger than she is.

Once or twice in passing, but you're right that it was never hammered home, just, this is Fred, he's trans, he's an agriculture expert, how ya doin'?

The scenes with Tricia and Sam in the hotel and Tricia's rant about her ex's dirty dick are classic.

I've never seen her til this though I do think she had a bit scene in a SATC movie. Was she a stand up comic?
by Anonymous | reply 130 | December 20, 2024 3:51 PM |
R130,
R130,
She was in the first SATC movie.
She interviewed with Carrie for the job of Carrie’s assistant.
She had one scene. Her character showed up drunk for the interview.
I saw an interview with BE once and she said that was her first professional gig.

I didn't warm up to Brad even by the end, he was so anal and controlling. Why was it so important to him that Joel to go to *his* church? And forcing him into that meeting with the guys. Just leave him alone.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | December 20, 2024 5:58 PM |
R132. I understand what you're saying but I liked Brad. I think he was so happy to be in a relationship that he wanted to share everything with Joel and didn't realize he was being controlling until Joel backed off.

I saw someone saying they're going to miss the French horn opening theme because those aren't often used (on their own) due to their distinct sound.
I think I'm going to rewatch the first two seasons over Christmas. I can't believe I originally watched them in the background while playing video games, I feel so embarrassed about that now.

R134 Are you twelve years old?
by Anonymous | reply 135 | December 23, 2024 2:47 PM |
The real question is, are you seventy? You've never heard of adult people playing video games, really?
