Al Jolson canceled by eBay

I was selling a used Al Jolson CD (he was once considered the greatest entertainer of the 29th century) and received this email notice:

"Your listing was removed. Offensive material policy"

An excerpt from their new policy: "Listings that promote, perpetuate, or glorify hatred, violence, or discrimination, including on the grounds of race, ethnicity, color, religion, gender, or sexual orientation, aren’t allowed.

This includes, but isn't limited to, the following:

-- Items, including figurines, cartoons, housewares, historical advertisements, and golliwogs with racist, anti-Semitic, or otherwise demeaning portrayals, for example through caricatures or other exaggerated features.

20th century. I'm not posting from the future.

by Anonymousreply 1April 2, 2024 1:42 AM

I can almost understand it if there was actual blackface images on the items. But if there isn't, why is there a ban?

by Anonymousreply 2April 2, 2024 1:47 AM

Uh-oh. Does that mean the Allach porcelain is next?

by Anonymousreply 3April 2, 2024 1:47 AM

OP, can you share an image?

by Anonymousreply 4April 2, 2024 1:47 AM

Me thinks someone complained.

by Anonymousreply 5April 2, 2024 1:50 AM

[quote]and golliwogs with racist, anti-Semitic, or otherwise demeaning portrayals, for example through caricatures or other exaggerated features.

SO no one can sell Al Hirschfeld illustrations of Streisand ?

by Anonymousreply 6April 2, 2024 1:51 AM

by Anonymousreply 10April 2, 2024 1:58 AM

post it w/out the pic, dumbass.

by Anonymousreply 11April 2, 2024 1:58 AM

Well JEEZ, OP. I wonder what the problem is, with Al in his best BLACKFACE on the CD? Gee, what could it be?

by Anonymousreply 12April 2, 2024 2:09 AM

There goes the market for Blackamoor brooches!

by Anonymousreply 13April 2, 2024 2:13 AM

I doubt OP even has an Al Jolson CD. I think someone just wanted to rant against "cancel culture" or whatever.

And, btw, there are plenty of Al Jolson albums and memorabilia for sale on Ebay, so I doubt this is even true

Mammy!

by Anonymousreply 16April 2, 2024 2:40 AM

Sonny Boy makes me misty.

by Anonymousreply 17April 2, 2024 2:50 AM

It's true, but I realize it's the cover image that triggered them to delist my item rather than the performer or the content.

by Anonymousreply 18April 2, 2024 2:50 AM

OP, try harder, sweetie.

by Anonymousreply 19April 2, 2024 2:54 AM

Such hypocrisy. The lyrics of so many contemporary “songs” are absolutely filthy, but Al Jolson is too offensive?

by Anonymousreply 20April 2, 2024 2:54 AM

r20 You're believing the OP? Search ebay for Al Jolson - tons of stuff comes up, including the cd w/cover art that OP said she tried to sell.

by Anonymousreply 21April 2, 2024 3:18 AM

Antisemetic.

by Anonymousreply 22April 2, 2024 3:26 AM

Fuck the woke

by Anonymousreply 23April 3, 2024 1:55 PM

by Anonymousreply 25April 3, 2024 2:38 PM

Ebay has eliminated Black memorabilia.

No more mammy cookie jars.

by Anonymousreply 26April 3, 2024 2:43 PM

I was hoping Jolson’s head had been harvested and revived in a fishbowl, somehow, by time travelers to wow audiences of the future.

by Anonymousreply 27April 3, 2024 2:54 PM

I want those mammy cookies

by Anonymousreply 28April 3, 2024 3:11 PM

What are they gonna do, let you have the auction and then let the winner not pay?

by Anonymousreply 29April 3, 2024 3:20 PM

1: Who buys CDs these days?

2: Who is in the market for Al Jolson these days?

by Anonymousreply 30April 3, 2024 11:30 PM

Jolson’s not my favorite, but any man in my life better be prepared for the music of the dawn of the 20th century through the big band era.
