Half a million California workers will get $20 minimum wage, starting today

The minimum wage in California rises to $20 / hr today, up from $16, and it has caused a lot of debate within the state. Half a million 'minimum wage' workers (described as mostly 'fast food' workers who are supporting families) will be getting the pay raise. Many 'franchise' owners and 'small business owners' said they will be cutting back on help, cutting out delivery services, raising prices and some have said they will be forced to close their doors.

I love the tearful threats of employers and corporations that prices will rise along with minimum wage.

"It’s always funny how it riles people up that the lowest-paid workers get a raise. You just want the cheap lunch? It’s not those poor schmucks that are going to drive inflation, it’s the people with their $200k paychecks and stock compensation packages that pay whatever for anything."

As they should.

You know, if the franchise owners of these fast food joints wouldn't pay so much to their drug dealers, to their numerous baby mommas and the payments on the BMWs and Benzos, maybe they'd have money to pay their employees instead of ripping the employees off constantly through wage theft.

Hope everyone stops overusing fast food so that the market cools.

God forbid the poor should ever have any money.

That raise ( as deserved as it is) still cannot make up for the large number of people who will lose their jobs. And it's not the big corporations that will feel it, it's the mom and independent store that will not be able to keep up and will eventually have to close, making the big corporations richer.

Good.

There should be different minimum wages for big corporations and smaller stores. Also teens should get a lower rate than adults.

Oh puhleese, this increase covers fast food workers, minimum wage is still $16.00 in California. But your 'argument' that wage increases for the lowliest workers is a bad thing is repulsive not to say ignorant. What will close the mom and pop stores, if any are left worth saving, is raging inflation of energy, durable and non durable goods, plus competing with the virtual monopolies resulting from the gutting of Glass-Stegall.

Try reading something about the economy instead of sad imaginary obituaries over stores you never patronize.

Yet they don't close up when their rent goes up, their business insurance surges, the utility bills skyrocket ? That they can absorb each month, but not a raise for their employees ?

This DOES NOT IMPACT MOM AND POP STORES. God - can you people read? It doesn't apply to them.

Also - In n' Out has been paying starting wages of $22/hr for several years. No issues there and the prices haven't skyrocketed.

Yes, they save money on food quality. In n'Out has terrible french fries.

R12, what does it feel like to never admit you're wrong?

by Anonymousreply 13April 2, 2024 2:38 AM

Who's going to pay for the precipitous increase? Look for $10.OO Big Macs and future layoffs because of lost business.

The franchise model is a scam. Some schmuck takes all the risk opening locations that make no sense , probably to launder money. Then corporate is loaded with risk free locations that underperform and they can use them as propaganda - “We had to close over 50 (not corporate owned) locations thanks to this pro-labor law, the economy is being ruined!”
