Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” is the album of the year, EASILY
This album does not have a single skip on it. It’s good from start to finish and an album that even people who don’t like country music can listen to. It’s mostly light and filled with gentle beats and amazing vocals.
Her best album in YEARS! I love her cover of Jolene and love Dolly Parton introducing the song on the album. Her song with Miley Cyrus is amazing. I love her song with Post Malone. Willie Nelson appears a few times.
Beyoncé, kudos.

I'm in a late meeting tonight and can't listen properly. But, I did sneak a listen to the opening track and it's... REALLY good. But, it's definitely not country. It's more like... psychedelic 70s rock with gospel and soul touches and, yes, a country twang. It's like if... Pink Floyd were producing a Beyonce album. This is a really good sound for her, she should do more of this instead of the on-the-nose cowgirl dressup of stuff like Texas Hold 'Em.

If she wanted to remake "Jolene," she should have remade it.
She didn't remake it, she rewrote it. 80% new lyrics, vastly inferior.
All about threatening the woman coming for her man. Serving what the audience demands.
Dolly's lyrics are more emotionally honest. Both men and women feel vulnerable when someone threatens to take away their partner. No room for vulnerability in this juggernaut. Just give people what will get approval on social media.

I've said it a million times here, her voice lacks soul and grit, even in her 40s. Harmony fills out that void her voice leaves at times. I like this song the most (probably because of the harmony throughout).

I would love to see Beyonce and Jon Batiste figure out how to perform Ameriican Requiem live somewhere. It's incredible, but I imagine it would require a ton of work to adapt for live performance. But, I bet Batiste could figure it out.
[quote]This is the moment yall, where we dismantle the genre machine. I was happy to produce and write for AMERIICAN REQUIEM, along with Beyoncé and Dion. When I catch inspiration, the words and chords pour out of me. What an honor to then see how brilliantly Beyoncé made them her own and THEN further enhanced the lyrical statement, synthesizing it into the larger body of work. After the harrowing vocal prelude that happens to start Cowboy Carter, you get to hear these words that read like a proclaimation. "Do you hear me or do you fear me?" or better yet in our Louisiana vernacular "Looka dere, Looka dere"
[quote]Prior to this, Dion and I had been on a creative journey, having conversations about the state of music and where we could take it. We'd been having these conversations for years but something about recent times has felt ripe with the power of actualization. When I picked up my guitar and notebook to write this song I put my trust in God to liberate my creative mind, as I always do when channeling inspiration.
[quote]Quincy Jones told me, as he also wrote in his foreword to my WE ARE album, "it's up to you to de categorize American music!!" which is what Duke Ellington told him. I really believe that is our generation's role, led by a few artists willing to take this leap.
[quote]@beyonce, so thrilled to contribute to your brilliant album, a work of such unimaginable impact and artistic firepower by a once in a generation artist. So glad that we finally got to collaborate with each other at this time.
[quote]Producing and writing for AMERIICAN REQUIEM was an example of extraordinary alignment—when many leading artists see a similar vision at the same time, that's when you know a major shift is happening. A new era, long time coming. Let's liberate ourselves from genre and break the barriers that marginalize who we are and the art that we create. Grateful and impressed by my brother @dixson and the other collaborators who helped make this album opening statement possible.

Is 30 tracks the new normal? Dolly's "Rockstar" album had 30 tracks, and so does this (well, close enough).

"Banjee" is old, too. It is believed to have originated in the NYC 80s Ballroom scene but I think it could have been around longer. Basically it means a young woman with a tough, urban swagger. RuPaul gave a shoutout to "banjee girl(s)" in one of his early 90s hits ("Back To My Roots")

I'm here for the meltdown that will ensue if problematic white woman Lana Del Rey - a superior songwriting talent and long overdue for a Grammy - snatches Album of the Year with her country album "Lasso" that's releasing in September.

Lmao Lana has yet to win a single Grammy. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

The irony that r135 seems fine with Lana making a country album but not Houston born and raised Bey. Hmmm

I'm just wondering when Beybot/Janbot will start going on a shooting rampage, tracking down everyone on DL who posts any negative comment about them.

Her ugly husband runs the show. Of course she and her crap album will win some award that has turned into a total joke.

Some of yall don’t realize how many similarities r&b and country music share. Thematically and song structure. This isn’t a country song but could easily be if you change the instrumentation.

It's weird all of you racist misogynists desperately trying to convince yourself that this is a bad album and that she's not talented. It's sad, really.
This is a fantastic album, if a little over-indulgent. If it's not your cup of tea, that's fine, move on, but this glee you assholes get from tearing down a strong, confident, talented, successful Black Woman is perverse.

R141 both originated from black singers

Beyoncé has done country songs before. And aesthetically she used to rock cowboy hats and boots in the late 90s. While she was growing up her dad listened to country music. How the fuck can someone say she doesn’t give a shit about country music. That’s just false.

Who were the black singers who originated country music, r143?
R141, both country and R&B follow the traditional popular song structure, which has a European origin. It's not racist to say that.
That song (Second Nature) is an Isley Brothers' song that was rejigged a bit by the anonymous composers who write most of Beyonce's songs.

Beyonce was probably inspired to do a country album by Lil Nas X.

R145 no. Europeans didn’t invent any of it. Music comes from Africa. Enough with your shit. Everyone is over it.

R145 I know it’s an Isley Brothers sample. I’m not quite sure what you mean by anonymous composers. Most composers of pop music outside A list producers are not known by the general public. They are certainly getting credit in line notes and royalties. The music and simple and the lyrics are whole original. As everything comes full circle the Queen actually collaborated with the Isley Bros to remake their original. I think the instrumentation is done over but those are Ron Isley’s original vocals from the 70s.

Black music absolutely influenced country but black people did not invent country. That's just BS.

The traditional verse-chorus-versen song structure comes from Africa, r147? Can you give any examples of such songs from Africa pre-20th century? Interesting to know that the Scotch-Irish were from Africa.

"Most composers of pop music outside A list producers are not known by the general public." - Which is why so much contemporary pop music is complete shit, r150.

It's not negating black musicians' impact to say that black musicians did not invent every form of American popular music, r155.
Anyhow, here's something that will blow your mind, and it's a million times better than anything being produced today.

By the same token, r156, people will proclaim an album they have not listened to a work of genius if it has Beyonce's name attached to it.

I was rolling my eyes at OP’s proclamation, but then I sat down and listened to it all and it’s a damn good album. Beyonce put in the work to really making something beautiful. Yes, is pulls form loads of 60s acts but it’s like a great play or movie remake. It built upon what’s been done.
Easily her best album.

R164 here again, I also want to note that it’s nice when music is celebrated. This album has so much going for it from a production standpoint, very similar to Renaissance which had a mountain of talented producers and writers thrown into it for a consistently interesting album. Cowboy Carter maintains a top tier production that keeps it interesting when broken down.
I know folks will want to bash Beyonce for hiring a large team on her work, but you know what, as a listener of any artists, I just want god music. I appreciate the T-Swifts that can write their own songs, but pop stars have never been required to be writers or producers. Beyonce seems very involved in this and all of her albums since she fired her dad as her manage.
