Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” is the album of the year, EASILY

This album does not have a single skip on it. It’s good from start to finish and an album that even people who don’t like country music can listen to. It’s mostly light and filled with gentle beats and amazing vocals.

Her best album in YEARS! I love her cover of Jolene and love Dolly Parton introducing the song on the album. Her song with Miley Cyrus is amazing. I love her song with Post Malone. Willie Nelson appears a few times.

Beyoncé, kudos.

I like how she flipped the Jolene song from begging “please don’t take my man” to warning her “don’t come for my man”.

I have to say I disagree. I listened to the album today and thought it was fine.

No song really stood out to me as a banger. The country vibe seemed kind of disingenuous

by Anonymousreply 6March 29, 2024 7:27 PM

You first, r4.

Your "Queen" is pure trash.

Why mess with a classic like that. Even the guy who sang Fast Car didn't change the gender of the narrator.

by Anonymousreply 8March 29, 2024 7:32 PM

Because she is so fucking edgy, r8!

by Anonymousreply 9March 29, 2024 7:34 PM

Whitney recording Dolly is one thing, Beyoncé is just a disgrace. Of course for Dolly, money is money. Go Dolly!

Her version of Jolene is so iconic already.

“Jolene, Jolene Jolene, Jolene, I know I’m a Queen, Jolene, I’m still a Creole Banjee Bitch from Louisiana”

🤣 she’s letting Jolene know she will slap the shit out of her if needed.

by Anonymousreply 47March 30, 2024 1:18 AM

I'm already tired of hearing about this album.

"Texas Hold 'Em" was uninspired. I suppose I'll give the whole thing a listen this weekend, just to be fair.

by Anonymousreply 48March 30, 2024 1:33 AM

I really like the few tracks I’ve heard so far so I’m definitely intrigued about the rest of the album now.

by Anonymousreply 49March 30, 2024 2:22 AM

I'm in a late meeting tonight and can't listen properly. But, I did sneak a listen to the opening track and it's... REALLY good. But, it's definitely not country. It's more like... psychedelic 70s rock with gospel and soul touches and, yes, a country twang. It's like if... Pink Floyd were producing a Beyonce album. This is a really good sound for her, she should do more of this instead of the on-the-nose cowgirl dressup of stuff like Texas Hold 'Em.

I listened to Jolene. Awful. D- at best. She sounds like a wannabee. Trying so hard yet emotionless at the same time. Poor imitation of country. Vomit worthy.

by Anonymousreply 53March 30, 2024 4:39 AM

Queen of the ghetto. No, thank you..

by Anonymousreply 54March 30, 2024 4:41 AM

Beyoncé isn’t from the ghetto babes. She grew up in an upper middle class area. 😊

by Anonymousreply 55March 30, 2024 4:44 AM

She married Jay-Z - she's ghetto.

by Anonymousreply 56March 30, 2024 4:49 AM

He’s filthy rich.

by Anonymousreply 57March 30, 2024 4:52 AM

R51 - if you can't hear the very obvious influence of 70s psychedelic and progressive rock on that track simply because there happens to be a Black woman singing...that might be a 'you' problem.

by Anonymousreply 58March 30, 2024 6:53 AM

If she wanted to remake "Jolene," she should have remade it.

She didn't remake it, she rewrote it. 80% new lyrics, vastly inferior.

All about threatening the woman coming for her man. Serving what the audience demands.

Dolly's lyrics are more emotionally honest. Both men and women feel vulnerable when someone threatens to take away their partner. No room for vulnerability in this juggernaut. Just give people what will get approval on social media.

by Anonymousreply 59March 30, 2024 7:10 AM

Hey Bey! Congrats on the album, it’s great. Listen, been trying to reach you and Jay for a couple days now, but your people say you can’t be reached? Really, really need to talk to you. See this thing has happened and…….

by Anonymousreply 60March 30, 2024 7:55 AM

by Anonymousreply 63March 30, 2024 2:04 PM

R59 she can’t rewrite the lyrics without Dolly’s approval. Dolly not only approved and recorded an intro for the song. NEXT.

A big yawn from the overexposed monolith

by Anonymousreply 65March 30, 2024 6:15 PM

r66 I feel exactly the same. The production and arrangements sound good. But Beyonce vocally just doesn't do it for me.

I've said it a million times here, her voice lacks soul and grit, even in her 40s. Harmony fills out that void her voice leaves at times. I like this song the most (probably because of the harmony throughout).

I would love to see Beyonce and Jon Batiste figure out how to perform Ameriican Requiem live somewhere. It's incredible, but I imagine it would require a ton of work to adapt for live performance. But, I bet Batiste could figure it out.

[quote]This is the moment yall, where we dismantle the genre machine. I was happy to produce and write for AMERIICAN REQUIEM, along with Beyoncé and Dion. When I catch inspiration, the words and chords pour out of me. What an honor to then see how brilliantly Beyoncé made them her own and THEN further enhanced the lyrical statement, synthesizing it into the larger body of work. After the harrowing vocal prelude that happens to start Cowboy Carter, you get to hear these words that read like a proclaimation. "Do you hear me or do you fear me?" or better yet in our Louisiana vernacular "Looka dere, Looka dere"

[quote]Prior to this, Dion and I had been on a creative journey, having conversations about the state of music and where we could take it. We'd been having these conversations for years but something about recent times has felt ripe with the power of actualization. When I picked up my guitar and notebook to write this song I put my trust in God to liberate my creative mind, as I always do when channeling inspiration.

[quote]Quincy Jones told me, as he also wrote in his foreword to my WE ARE album, "it's up to you to de categorize American music!!" which is what Duke Ellington told him. I really believe that is our generation's role, led by a few artists willing to take this leap.

[quote]@beyonce, so thrilled to contribute to your brilliant album, a work of such unimaginable impact and artistic firepower by a once in a generation artist. So glad that we finally got to collaborate with each other at this time.

[quote]Producing and writing for AMERIICAN REQUIEM was an example of extraordinary alignment—when many leading artists see a similar vision at the same time, that's when you know a major shift is happening. A new era, long time coming. Let's liberate ourselves from genre and break the barriers that marginalize who we are and the art that we create. Grateful and impressed by my brother @dixson and the other collaborators who helped make this album opening statement possible.

by Anonymousreply 80March 31, 2024 4:10 AM

After a day, I have to say they'd be crazy not to release "II Most Wanted" with Miley Cirus as the next single. That's a country hit if ever I heard one.

My favorite three tracks are probably:

Bodyguard

Daughter

II Most Wanted

by Anonymousreply 81March 31, 2024 5:28 AM

Is 30 tracks the new normal? Dolly's "Rockstar" album had 30 tracks, and so does this (well, close enough).

I remember back in the days of LPs when you were lucky to get 8-10 new songs from your favorite artist or band when a new album came out. Now it's 30?!?

by Anonymousreply 82March 31, 2024 3:35 PM

Of course a lot of the tracks on this (unlike Rockstar) are "filler"... sub-one-minute little interstitials and things. I've never been a fan of those. Either commit to a whole song or leave it off.

by Anonymousreply 83March 31, 2024 3:36 PM

Is OP her publicist?

by Anonymousreply 84March 31, 2024 3:43 PM

It's a bit easier to do a zillion songs when you have a team of people that do everything for you. You just show up and sing with your boring voice. Your voice doesn't even have to show emotion. And everyone bows down and kisses your ass.

by Anonymousreply 89March 31, 2024 4:04 PM

R85 Please she is always involved in the creative process. You are so lame. And no one does this to non black or non female artists. If a male, even when people realize they aren’t great singers like Bob Dylan or Justin Timberlake, no one accuses them of merely being a puppet. And yes I know Bob Dylan is a profound songwriter but whenever blacks or females who aren’t traditionally thought of as songwriters idiots like you just claim this “but they didn’t nothing” creative argument. Your bias is so apparent.

by Anonymousreply 102March 31, 2024 4:54 PM

[quote] I'm old. Please, what does "banjee" mean?

"Banjee" is old, too. It is believed to have originated in the NYC 80s Ballroom scene but I think it could have been around longer. Basically it means a young woman with a tough, urban swagger. RuPaul gave a shoutout to "banjee girl(s)" in one of his early 90s hits ("Back To My Roots")

by Anonymousreply 103March 31, 2024 5:11 PM

r75 I like the music but some of her vocals don't sound right to me. Like the way she says "honey, honey" almost ruins the song. Also during the last 30 seconds, when she starts moaning like a cat in heat, is quite awful.

by Anonymousreply 117March 31, 2024 6:11 PM

She needs to learn that less is more. There were some good songs on the album but it was mostly filler. The album went wayyy too long.

I feel the same way about all her other albums. Way too many songs that are all over the place. There’s no cohesiveness.

Also, I thought the Jolene cover was tacky. I’m also tired of hearing about her toxic marriage to Jay. I think it’s all a publicity stunt and they are more like business partners than romantic partners, but if your marriage is really that bad then a get divorce already!

by Anonymousreply 118March 31, 2024 6:15 PM

by Anonymousreply 119March 31, 2024 6:21 PM

There is literally zero emotion in her voice.

She put out a video album a few years ago. It looked like it cost many millions and was full of interesting visuals of many genres. But so many different ideas and genres diluted the whole thing. It kind of turned into a forgettable mess.

by Anonymousreply 125March 31, 2024 8:01 PM

She’s so manufactured she needs a bar code.

This is a grab for the Album of the Year. She and Jay Z don’t give a shit about country music; he’s determined to get that Grammy or else and has pulled out all the stops. Once she wins that, he will beat his chest and tell the other oppressed millionaire rappers that “we did it, y’all”, and they will finally cement their place as King and Queen.

I have a few questions Is Dolly actually singing on the hangman part of Tyrant? I’m sure I can hear her. Is the new remix of Texas Hold ‘Em including a famous song, is the bit that goes Pony Up a sample?

My favourite song is bodyguard, sounds really 70s, love it.

[quote] Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” is the album of the year, EASILY

If true that only speaks to how lame 21st century music has become.

Garbage No-Talent with an IQ of 87.

by Anonymousreply 134April 7, 2024 2:12 PM

I'm here for the meltdown that will ensue if problematic white woman Lana Del Rey - a superior songwriting talent and long overdue for a Grammy - snatches Album of the Year with her country album "Lasso" that's releasing in September.

by Anonymousreply 135April 7, 2024 2:19 PM

Lmao Lana has yet to win a single Grammy. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

by Anonymousreply 136April 7, 2024 5:53 PM

The irony that r135 seems fine with Lana making a country album but not Houston born and raised Bey. Hmmm

by Anonymousreply 137April 7, 2024 5:54 PM

Jolene is an amazing song. My favorite cover versions are the whole subgenre of Eldritch Horror Jolene, e. g...

I'm just wondering when Beybot/Janbot will start going on a shooting rampage, tracking down everyone on DL who posts any negative comment about them.

Her ugly husband runs the show. Of course she and her crap album will win some award that has turned into a total joke.

by Anonymousreply 140April 7, 2024 6:40 PM

Some of yall don’t realize how many similarities r&b and country music share. Thematically and song structure. This isn’t a country song but could easily be if you change the instrumentation.

It's weird all of you racist misogynists desperately trying to convince yourself that this is a bad album and that she's not talented. It's sad, really.

This is a fantastic album, if a little over-indulgent. If it's not your cup of tea, that's fine, move on, but this glee you assholes get from tearing down a strong, confident, talented, successful Black Woman is perverse.

by Anonymousreply 142April 7, 2024 7:16 PM

R141 both originated from black singers

by Anonymousreply 143April 7, 2024 7:18 PM

Beyoncé has done country songs before. And aesthetically she used to rock cowboy hats and boots in the late 90s. While she was growing up her dad listened to country music. How the fuck can someone say she doesn’t give a shit about country music. That’s just false.

by Anonymousreply 144April 7, 2024 7:28 PM

Who were the black singers who originated country music, r143?

R141, both country and R&B follow the traditional popular song structure, which has a European origin. It's not racist to say that.

That song (Second Nature) is an Isley Brothers' song that was rejigged a bit by the anonymous composers who write most of Beyonce's songs.

by Anonymousreply 145April 7, 2024 7:40 PM

Beyonce was probably inspired to do a country album by Lil Nas X.

by Anonymousreply 146April 7, 2024 7:40 PM

R145 no. Europeans didn’t invent any of it. Music comes from Africa. Enough with your shit. Everyone is over it.

by Anonymousreply 147April 7, 2024 7:41 PM

Flop era, I’m afraid.

by Anonymousreply 148April 7, 2024 7:42 PM

More #1s.

by Anonymousreply 149April 7, 2024 7:43 PM

R145 I know it’s an Isley Brothers sample. I’m not quite sure what you mean by anonymous composers. Most composers of pop music outside A list producers are not known by the general public. They are certainly getting credit in line notes and royalties. The music and simple and the lyrics are whole original. As everything comes full circle the Queen actually collaborated with the Isley Bros to remake their original. I think the instrumentation is done over but those are Ron Isley’s original vocals from the 70s.

You didn't know shit, Teafake.

by Anonymousreply 151April 7, 2024 8:17 PM

[quote] Who were the black singers who originated country music,

Black music absolutely influenced country but black people did not invent country. That's just BS.

by Anonymousreply 152April 7, 2024 8:26 PM

The traditional verse-chorus-versen song structure comes from Africa, r147? Can you give any examples of such songs from Africa pre-20th century? Interesting to know that the Scotch-Irish were from Africa.

by Anonymousreply 153April 7, 2024 8:35 PM

How many albums have you actually listened to this year?

by Anonymousreply 154April 7, 2024 8:40 PM

"Most composers of pop music outside A list producers are not known by the general public." - Which is why so much contemporary pop music is complete shit, r150.

by Anonymousreply 157April 7, 2024 8:55 PM

It's not negating black musicians' impact to say that black musicians did not invent every form of American popular music, r155.

Anyhow, here's something that will blow your mind, and it's a million times better than anything being produced today.

By the same token, r156, people will proclaim an album they have not listened to a work of genius if it has Beyonce's name attached to it.

by Anonymousreply 159April 7, 2024 9:05 PM

Ameriican Requiem is so good. Wish she had a couple more tracks that bold and ambitious on the album.

by Anonymousreply 160April 7, 2024 10:50 PM

I’m surprised she’s never faced any real backlash for her chronic plagiarism.

by Anonymousreply 161April 8, 2024 12:40 AM

R161, because that would be racist, god!!!

by Anonymousreply 162April 8, 2024 1:18 AM

R16, well, me.

by Anonymousreply 163April 8, 2024 1:23 AM

I was rolling my eyes at OP’s proclamation, but then I sat down and listened to it all and it’s a damn good album. Beyonce put in the work to really making something beautiful. Yes, is pulls form loads of 60s acts but it’s like a great play or movie remake. It built upon what’s been done.

Easily her best album.

by Anonymousreply 164April 8, 2024 1:28 AM

R161 - I think you need access to a dictionary

by Anonymousreply 165April 8, 2024 2:47 AM

R164 here again, I also want to note that it’s nice when music is celebrated. This album has so much going for it from a production standpoint, very similar to Renaissance which had a mountain of talented producers and writers thrown into it for a consistently interesting album. Cowboy Carter maintains a top tier production that keeps it interesting when broken down.

I know folks will want to bash Beyonce for hiring a large team on her work, but you know what, as a listener of any artists, I just want god music. I appreciate the T-Swifts that can write their own songs, but pop stars have never been required to be writers or producers. Beyonce seems very involved in this and all of her albums since she fired her dad as her manage.

by Anonymousreply 166April 8, 2024 2:53 AM

Good* music.

by Anonymousreply 167April 8, 2024 2:54 AM

Tell me how you define plagiarism and I’ll show you a hundred examples of her willfulness.

by Anonymousreply 168April 8, 2024 3:34 AM

Song, maybe. Album? No way. The top machine is not behind her anymore.
