Susan Sarandon serving massive cuntitude at 90s Con
Having attended/worked these conventions for many, many years I will never understand why you would commit yourself to something you absolutely loathe. My clients have always been grateful for the experience (mainly the cash & free food/accommodations) and the thrill of interacting with their fans....even the weird ones can give you a good laugh and fun story to tell...
So I'm hearing Sarandon is not a happy camper.
During COVID, it was understandable that clear plastic barriers would be used to protect the talent from germs...but this is ludicrous...
Also...
[quote]someone said her daughter told Susan Sarandon her favorite movie was Stepmom and Susan Sarandon glared and said GOOD!
Sidenote: That is not me in the photo...I ended up attending GalaxyCon this weekend and had a blast joking with Tara Strong (a doll!) and got to meet Josh Keaton who is cute as fuck!

Josh Keaton has always been cute as fuck!
And those eyes!
I'm glad he's aging nicely.
Incidentally, 17-year-old Keaton was the voice of teen Hercules in Disney's HERCULES.
(Tate Donovan voiced the adult Hercules.)
Inexplicably, 33-year-old Roger Bart provided the singing voice even though Keaton can sing.
In fact, Keaton had already recorded "Go the Distance," but the powers that be decided to go with a more seasoned Broadway voice.

I get the feeling that Susan is angry because this is her career now. Cons are good money, but not where someone with Susan's previous career would want to end up.

Fellow Oscar winner Marisa Tomei is also attending and hasn't had nearly the sales Sarandon has (even with Marvel now under her belt) and I'm hearing she has been incredibly sweet and easy going.
After the group photo with Sarandon was done, Geena Davis was doing individual photo ops with fans and requested the barrier be removed.

I think that going to the cons is less about getting work and more the appeal of having dozens of people spend time lining up just to get a brief moment to tell you how great you are. But I guess maybe when your career is bigger and at its prime you don't have to go look for that instead those people come to you. And I probably have a higher class at least money wise.

The barrier is a little over the top. I've never been to one of these cons, it just sounds like one humiliating experience for everyone involved, except for those Supernatural people. They seem to always be in auditoriums on a stage away from the crowd.

I'd love to see a documentary about the lives of those actors who mostly get small parts in movies and shows, working enough to get by, but who also were part of these genre shows like Star Trek, Supernatural, Buffy, Smallville, etc. and go to conventions every weekend where they're treated like rock stars. It must be strange to be a regular person in the outside world and then flying to these conventions all over the country and being treated like a superstar, having people cry and fall out over meeting you. I think for some of them it becomes a significant, if not primary, source of income. But some of them have the scary type of fans who become obsessed and try to break into their homes and worse. That's a problem that a Beyonce or a Tom Hanks have the resources to deal with, but what if you're a workaday actor making six figures?
Then there's the other side of that coin, the actors who were once major stars and now do the autograph shows like Chiller and the comic cons. Some of them seem to get a kick out of it, and others seem to feel more like Miss Sarandon. It's all really interesting to me, and I think it would make a successful documentary or reality TV series.

Isn't that how people like Maryann and Gilligan, Eddie from The Munsters, and The Brady Bunch crew supported themselves? They didn't get residuals in those days, so they do the cons and, apparently, lived very nice lives just from cons.

Ms Sarandon is on one side of a pile of cardboard boxes looking as if she has been taken hostage. Delighted normal lady is on the other side looking thrilled to be in a pic with Ms Sarandon, who would rather be anywhere else. Anyone with self-esteem would feel humiliated.

I’ve never done a fan con but I know some people have a great time at them and plenty of the actors are friendly and gracious. Paying for an official meet and greet seems a lot more considerate for both parties as at least it’s a controlled environment. Better than going up to someone at a restaurant and asking for an autograph.

Bartlett was wearing a shirt with an animated character on it and someone offside of it was shouting "Go to hell."
My friend said, "Hello Barbara Thorndike," and she said, "Oh yes that was me. Thank you sooooooo much for remembering," and she rolled her eyes. Then added, "What a bitch she was!" then laughed hysterically.

Looking at the autograph/photo prices for each star is really depressing. Most of them really need the money, too.
How is John Carpenter the most expensive? I guess the horror fans are an avid bunch, even though he hasn't directed anything significant since the 80s. Hasn't he made a fortune from the Halloween franchise? Why does he need to sign autographs and pose for photos?
Imagine being Tori Spelling and growing up in the most expensive house in America, to selling autographs for $60 so you can pay your rent.
Imagine being Rosie O'Donnell and being the biggest thing on TV during the 90s, to selling autographs for $60. I thought she was worth over $100 million? Why does she need to do stuff like this?

I went to one of these cons in Burbank about 15 years ago. I had been trying to get in touch with someone through their manager to do an interview with me for a documentary and never got a return call, so I thought I would see them personally to ask if they were interested. A friend went with me and since we paid to get in, we figured we might as well look around. He was much more enthusiastic than I was, and because he'd worked in the horror genre, he knew several of the "celebs" there.
It seemed really depressing to me, and I felt really sorry for the people who didn't have anyone coming up to their tables. I wanted to go up to some of them to tell them I was a fan or that I admired them, but I knew what they really wanted was for me to pay for an autograph. I'm not an autograph collector, so I just smiled and nodded from a distance.
The only person I went up to and engaged with was Billie Hayes, who played Witchiepoo, because she was donating her autograph fees to an animal rescue organization. I just chatted with her for a few minutes, told her how much she was a part of my childhood, and we talked about our pets and I paid the donation without getting a photo or an autograph.
I would never go back to another one (and never have). Way too depressing. I'm happy if this is a way for these people to make money, and I see nothing wrong with it, but I don't want to see them looking like abandoned pets waiting for someone, anyone, to show up and rescue them.

Some, not a lot do it for charity. Linda Blair is famous in the circuit for her animal rescue foundation and Richard Dreyfuss did one I was at for a reading foundation.

I went to one of these things back in the 90s. The Hollywood Memorabilia Show. Just a ton of posters and “celebs.” I saw Corey Haim, who looked like he was tweaking. Several cast members of The Poseidon Adventure (no Shelly or Gene or Red or homophobe Ernest or Roddy), Pat Priest who played Marilyn on The Munsters and Sue Ann’s sister on MTM, and Robert Vaughn (I do so so wanted to steal the mimeographed sign when he went to lunch: “Robert Vaughn will return”). I used the urinal next to Lou Ferigno (I didn’t look — I didn’t want to make him angry. I wouldn’t like him when he’s angry).
I paid for Pat Priest’s autograph — because a pal came from a CRAZY family and we always said she was Marilyn Mu star. So Pat signed the photo to her and said “I had fun playing you!” My pal cherished that.

[quote]Even if the autograph/photo con circuit is easy money, you'd think some of these A-listers (or at least A-list once upon a time) would have been set for life and not need to go to this level...
Geena is probably down to her last few millions and needs to make some money. She's been a B- actress for the past 20+ years, and never made big money even when she at her peak. Susan has worked non-stop all of her career, but she may have lost several million on her silly ping-pong bar business, which she tried to franchise a few years ago. She could also be doing this for charitable reasons.
I still don't understand why John Carpenter needs to do shows like this. How could he not be worth at least $100 million from the Halloween franchise alone?

WTF? Why would ANYONE pay money to stand so far away from the celebrity with or without a barrier? (The barrier just makes it obvious.) These pictures are terrible.

r106, he's 76 and not making movies anymore. When you love cinema, you still want to be a part of it. It validates his career, gives him something to do. Cursory search brings him up at a net worth of $40 mil, and it's probably a lot less than that. If you could make $25,000-$100,000 over the course of 2-3 days, just talking to people who love you, getting your signature, taking photos with you, wouldn't you do it too?

The $$$ is too good to turn down. I've read that Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus make $300,000 per appearance. Imagine making that much money in just a few hours!

I wonder how Susan feels about The Rocky Horror Picture Show turning 50 next year? Would she show up to a reunion only to sneer at long-time fans of the film? She's had quite a long and illustrious career that includes an Oscar win, and it's nothing to sneeze at. Hugh Jackman has done plenty of Cons and I don't remember anyone saying he was a cunt. Lighten up Susan!

For that much money, I'd even let them cop a feel if they tipped big. It's really no different than being a stripper in a club. Maybe that's why they have the boxes up--so people can't see what's really going on.

Susan has shown up to RHPS events in the past and been interviewed for documentaries, etc. She doesn't do every single one, but she doesn't view the film as a negative at all. I don't think anyone in the cast did.

Carpenter hadn't made Halloween money since the 2nd one. The Akkads owned the property.
He did score cash scoring the latest trilogy with his son but he didn't make as much off that franchise as you'd imagine.

R117 that’s about what I was going to add to this thread. Carpenter doesn’t even own a piece of the Halloween franchise, so going to cons is understandable in his case.

Do you not think fans are lining up to have "Lorenzo's Oil" signed? I guarantee you she will make more in one weekend singing Rocky Horror stuff than she made making the movie. She also attended one of the first Rocky Conventions on Long Island in the late 70's.

John Carpenter was really dumb not to direct more of the Halloween movies. I'm sure he could have gotten a production credit if he had. He's always been difficult and thought he was the next Spielberg. Now he has to do these conventions to make money. Jamie Lee Curtis played it smart and made a fortune off of the Halloween reboots.

R129 true. The reboots from the last few years have been by and large junk, but Carpenter should’ve came back at least for the 2018 one. It probably would’ve been more than just another brutal horror movie with his directorial choices, but who knows. JLC got a producing credit, and topped it all off by winning the Oscar after putting Laurie Strode to bed for good. She followed the money and it paid off.

I don’t think he had a choice did he? David Gordon Green and Danny McBride wrote it themselves for Blumhouse and Carpenter was effectively cut out by the time they were on the scene.

I bet Carpenter is glad he's not closely associated with the new Halloween trilogy. The first one was decent but the other two are not on the level of a John Carpenter horror movie. I think Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends will fade into obscurity like the disgusting Rob Zombie movies.

I see no reason at all to feel sorry for any person who goes to these Cons to make a few bucks . We all suffer such humiliations . I used to be a trial lawyer . Things didn’t go as planned . Now, as an elder , I do remote law work chained to my desk for a pathetic hourly fee. But a few bucks are better than no bucks .

I don't get the humiliation crap. These are just people, why you consider them anything more is beyond me. I have met hundreds of stars and celebrities, most are completely down to earth. I have met big stars at these shows and lots love it. They have egos and they get to talk about their work. They hear how their work might have affected someone's life and of course they get paid too.

I've been to major cons, but also to informal gatherings. I've paid money to get Gates McFadden and Tricia Helfer to sign glossies, and I've paid $10 each for a selfie with two recurring actors on The Walking Dead.
The latter was more fun. They happened to be in Orlando that weekend, and one of them knew the owner of a comic book store, so they had a mini-con. You could tell these were genuine "working actors" who put the ten bucks toward rent.
