I keep seeing little clips of it but not sure I want to sign up for another streaming service. If you’ve seen it, is it worth it? Apparently it’s about Catherine de’ Medici, 16th century Queen of France
The Serpent Queen on the STARZ network - has anyone here seen this?

Watched it, loved it, amd the way the story was told, kept my interest through.
Also great cover of Grapevine by the Slits

I watched all of S1 on a lazy Sunday. Was a perfect type of show for mild viewing while I was surfing the web for sites like DL and checking Twitter. I think I also cooked two meals while watching. I’ll turn in for S2

It was up and down for me but I did like it. Starz also has that "White Queen" show *and "George and Mary" so it's my go-to for slightly upmarket bodice-rippers.

Bumping up this thread. Season 2 just came out on Prime through Starz on 7/17 and it's now #6 in the US on Prime! Amazing show, I'm hooked after 3 episodes of Season 1!

Season 2 does not disappoint. Morton is so brilliant in this role and Minnie Driver is a hoot as a horny Queen Elizabeth.

Season Finale this week. I think it's safe to say we will be getting a third season.

The next season will be the most exciting and violent, since it will have the French Wars of Religion and the Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Day.
There won't be a fourth season, though.

This is the vest thign Minnie driver has ever done. She's DEEPLY funny as the insincere Elizabeth I of England, who loves toying with other royals and courtiers.

"Best thing"--sorry

My biggest disappointment about the series has been actually its dearth of hot sex.
When they do show sex, its often with the least attractive characters and/or in very awkward and unsexy situations ( as with Antoinette de Guise and Louis de Bourbon, the young Catherine de Medici and the young Henri II). But although we are told the two hot Guise brothers have interesting sex lives (the Duc has a handsome male lover, the Cardinal fucks lots of his female worshippers) and they're both played by gorgeous men of Middle Eastern ancestry, we never get to see them in bed fucking someone or even shirtless.

The season finale was insane. And Morton's last line was hilarious.

Thanks OP for reminding me, I loved the 1st season of this, and look forward to S2, especially since The Great has been cancelled.

The Great was too “zany” and twee, and had nothing at all to do with CTG. Too bad, because I love Elle.
Yes, TSQ is jazzed up for modern audiences, complete with POC 16th century Frenchmen, but at least it conveys the story of sixteenth century France.
Physically Colm Meaney was all wrong for Francis I, a wiry man with a huge snout. But overall it looks pretty good and Samantha Morton is fabulous.

The Great was dreadful

The St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre was just too rushed through It was one of the most complicated and conflicted historical events of the French Renaissance--people still hugely debate the exact causes, and there were dozens of them--but it over simplified things to make it quick. They used all kinds of bizarre legends of the time that have been considered ridiculous untruths now for centuries--such as Catherine de Medici having the Queen of Navarre assassinated by means of poisoned gloves (!!!)--as if they had really happened.

r11 the lack of sex makes me feel like this series is really geared towards gen-z and lesbians. God love it, it's loads of fun. Compare this to that listless disappointment known as "Mary & George," once the sex stopped the show went downhill fast. This show has a very cheap writers room BUT makes up for it with the humor and decent dresses. I hope Showtime will throw them some more cash for S3 because them sets look so sad and deserted.

I don't mind that the writers fictionalized certain situations (ie Elizabeth never met Catherine or Mary QoS). Unlike the movie Firebrand which has Catherine Parr murdering Henry VIII after suffering a miscarriage and nearly being burned at the stake which is ridiculous.
