The Gays and Tennis, Part 164 -- The Sunshine Double
Into the deep end of Indian Wells, gurls ... and many questions arise:
Is the Big 3 now officially dead, with Novaxx succumbing to the Nardi Party?
Will Misery and Granny Vee enter the wheelchair dubs in FL?
Does Legz shave his legz? Or Nair them??
Can Boss Daddy repeat, or will the PP take him down?
When will Tommy Haas get a decent haircut?
Can Larry Ellison move any muscle in his face?
What about Our Sweet, Dumb Tommy? Balding or not, he's still HAWT! Can he go deep -- and not just in his PP?
Feel free to add something about the womyns, even if none of us cares.
Carry on!

Rune fired the ball directly at Medvedev at close range at the net. After the point ended Holger very vaguely, half-heatedly flapped his hand at Medvedev in apology, but it was pretty damn weak. The verbal equivalent would be say 'sorry if you're offended'.
On first view you can't see Holger make the gesture at all, but on the slo-mo replay you can see it.
I think Daniil was making a meal of it, but Holger was definitely goading him - whining to the umpire and smirking to mommy and Daddy Patrick.

Question: Why so many byes in the draw? Why don't they let more lower ranked guys or qualifiers into the main draw?
by Anonymous | reply 186 | March 18, 2024 10:31 PM
|
R186 I wonder if it's b/c so may of the top players were at Indian Wells and there's no break between the tournaments.
by Anonymous | reply 187 | March 18, 2024 11:22 PM
|
R186, it's always been that way at the Masters (or at least most of them) - though the size of the draw and number of byes has varied over time - it's not always the same, though it's getting more uniform. I think there's a couple reasons. First, it can be a good way to ensure that more top players play (even if the events are mandatory, players will just get a medical excuse if they want out), a way to attract them. The bye allows them not to have to to get from the previous tournament to the next one and have to start playing right away at the beginning of the week. They can either get settled at the tournament site for a few days, or even simply arrive later in the week. That's especially important when you have two long tournaments back to back like the Sunshine Double. And obviously more important the deeper a player goes in the tournament prior - and the better players are the ones more likely to go deeper. Second, at this point, the 10 or 11 day (main draw), 96-player combined Masters/WTA 1000 has become fairly standard and having the byes lightens the schedule and allows for more flexibility if there's delays since there's less matches to get through. If they had full 128-player draws, they'd need the remaining 2-3 days of the two weeks for the main draw, and qualifying would have to be pushed back to the week before, as it is with Slams.
I know, at least for smaller tournaments, if they're trying to entice a player to fly around the world and pay an appearance fee, the shorter week is part of the bait.
At times I've felt that byes aren't always great for every player who gets one. A player who has already played a match is sometimes in better form than player for whom it's their first match. Though that's usually more of an issue with the lower seeds, not the very top guys (with exceptions). And sometimes I'd think that at least some players, having traveled a long way to play, would want to play as many matches as possible.

Granny V still getting wild cards. I get it, she can still probably draw some folks, even if out of curiosity. But now she's usually only around for one match, so what's the benefit to the tournament - a few more people watching a first round match? Flip side, tournament wild cards are truly at the tournament director's discretion and can be given to whomever - young up and comers, players who were injured and ranking dropped, way-past-their-prime veterans like Venus. James Blake is the Miami tournament director - played when Venus was in her prime and they're friendly, so I'm not surprised.

The joke on tennis forums is that he can't win it this year because he's already won it. He's won 20 titles and NEVER repeated at a particular tournament, which is very rare for someone with that many titles.

Since we're in a rain delay, listen to what the players had to say at the 1993 Lipton Key Biscayne.
Fabulous gossip that we never get anymore.
Top-ranked Jim Courier was able to restrain himself until the fourth round, in which he was upset by Mark Woodforde of Australia. Trailing in the third set, Courier became furious over a line call. Courier, who's usually a reasonable fellow, then gave a forearm shiver to the umpire's chair, rattling Dana Loconto in his seat and spilling soda out of Loconto's cup. Afterward Courier refused to apologize, saying, "We all do things in the heat of the moment. I don't regret anything." Biyotch!

Not as the term is used in tennis, R301. In tennis betting, yes. This match is RET, not WALKOVER, on the official ATP website.
…a walkover occurs in tennis when a player advances to the next round without playing their match because their opponent is injured, ill, or has been thrown out of the tournament…different from a retirement, which is when a player starts their match but is unable to finish because of injury or illness, automatically giving their opponent victory.
^that’s actually the rule for Wimbledon, fyi. You may be confused by some live scores apps such as Google’s widget, which incorrectly displays retirements as walkovers.

R312 Clearly you haven't seen him play live. I've seen him three years in a row now at Indian Wells, and he's just thrilling in his shots, and firepower. Additionally, while it seems like he's all business on the court, he DOES show his personality from time to time. Last match I saw at Indian Wells was doubles with Sonego against Rublev/Khachanov. He was clearly having fun, and hitting some incredible shots.
Watching tennis on TV is highly deceptive. Every hit sounds the same, the speed of the ball doesn't look to vary much, and it doesn't show off the true foot speed of the players.
by Anonymous | reply 332 | March 24, 2024 2:05 AM

R312 I do understand what you're saying about his personality. But Sinner plays incredibly offensive tennis. His shot making is second to none. He's not as fast or quick as Carlos, but he has great court coverage and can whip winners off both sides with insane precision.

R332 I have watched plenty of his matches, thank you. I stand by what I said. He is a boring player. It's my opinion. If you disagree, that is fine, but I stand by my opinion. I never liked him and never will. He is just not a player I find exciting to watch and he has no personality. Just boring, boring and more boring. Alcaraz plays offensive and exciting tennis and has such a sweet personality. He will always be my favorite. Sinner might have the better game overall (his serve is much better than Alcaraz's), but as a player I will never root for him. I just don't like him.

I have watched many of his matches and nearly fell asleep every time. They were just boring all around. I know I'm in the minority, which is fine. I just don't like Sinner and never will. He reminds me of Djokovic, both his personality and his game, and that is not a compliment.
by Anonymous | reply 335 | March 24, 2024 6:53 AM
|
That's hilarious. Sinner is about as far from Djokovic's personality as it gets. He has yet to demonstrate anything near Novaxx's level of arrogance, self-importance, condescension, duplicity, dichotomy, or unhinged rage.
by Anonymous | reply 336 | March 24, 2024 10:30 AM

R335., I'm not trying to change your mind. Totally get it that Sinner isn't for you. We like what we like. Rafa is my favorite player of all time, but I know some people find his game too this or too that. But to me Rafa is magic on court.
That said, Sinner objectively has an offensive game. Maybe a boring one! But he's not a pusher. He's not a defender. He's pure offense.
This makes him very different than Novak - who is the best pusher the game has ever seen. I hate Novak too! And I hate Novak's game. But I feel like Sinner's game is just SO different in just about every way.
Sinner tends to dictate play. He's much more like Fed in that respect. To prove my point: Alcaraz beat Sinner at Indian Wells because Carlos finally realized he couldn't out "offense" Sinner. He had to be trickier. He had to change pace. Literally. He had to bring Sinner in. Employ the backhand slice. Build the point more. Why? Because Sinner has a bigger offensive game when he's on.

Landaluce is very tall, unlike Alcaraz. Shelton vs Landaluce match now is interesting as they are both talented youngsters. As expected Shelton easily gets through his first service game. My bet is this will be a beatdown as Landaluce is very inexperienced, but it will still be a good experience for him. He is not really ready for this level yet imo. My guess is Shelton will win 6-1, 6-1 or something.

Landaluce lost, but he wasn't totally outplayed. It was a good experience for him and Shelton gave him a lot of praise at the net. It was a sweet moment.

Long term it's PTPA. Players often break up with PPs. They flame out quickly. However, prolonged exposure to "Nole" and his gang causes career decay. The half life is two years.

R360: I suspect word has gotten through to Rune's colleagues and team about all the bad vibes and commentary you spread about him. I believe your furious keyboard skills had such a debilitating effect on him that he might have decided to leave Miami as fast as possible because you've gotten in his head so much. A shirtless Medvedev was briefly on screen. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Why or why not?

Meddy is so cute, he's so lean and lanky. His bod is not everyone's cup of tea. But his charisma and adorable face do it for me!

It is when it Charleston begins. But, I imagine we'll be on to the next thread by then. Part 165, The Clay Court Season begins, or something.

Right now we are focused on the fast hard courts of Miami and hard-court specialists like Medvedev.
Soon it will be the clay season and time for clay specialists like Nadal.

I cannot stand Medvedev. Horrible, ugly personality and he is far from hot. He is also Russian, so you know he is most likely not a fan of the gays.
by Anonymous | reply 501 | March 28, 2024 7:49 AM

But he’s besties with Rublev, r501, so it’s unlikely he’s not a fan.
by Anonymous | reply 502 | March 28, 2024 8:09 AM

R501 Med was very supportive when asked his thoughts on if a hypothetical player were to come out. He was clearly pro gay. Or came across that way. This was at the US Open a few years ago.
I can't stand his brand of tennis, but he's quite bright and witty as hell.
by Anonymous | reply 503 | March 28, 2024 8:56 AM

R502 And your point is? Khachanov is also close with Rublev and he supports Putin.
by Anonymous | reply 504 | March 28, 2024 11:18 AM

I don't trust Russians. Never have and never will. Most of them are homophobic Putin supporters. I support a Russian ban in sports. I root against Russians. I think it's disgusting that the ATP allow Russian tennis players in tournaments. But as usual they only care about money. Money over morals. They have no spine.
by Anonymous | reply 505 | March 28, 2024 11:22 AM

I feel sorry for Russians who hate Putin and the war. It's like Americans and the stupid Iraq war.
If they protest, there's a real chance they could go to jail or worse.
by Anonymous | reply 506 | March 28, 2024 12:38 PM

R506 Why didn't the ATP ban Khachanov who openly supports Putin? And btw, you are totally clueless. My country shares a border with Russia. You have no idra about Russia or Russians until you share a border with them. I'm very proud of my country for banning ALL Russian athletes from competing. We know they are used as pawns by Putin. The ban is necessary.

For the Medvedev lover here, has he ever commented on the war? As far as I know Rublev is the only Russian who has, and he said he wants peace. Silence = supporting Putin.

Not a Medvedev lover here (though I do appreciate his sly wit and a few other things about him), but he has voiced opposition to the war.

Hmmm, I wonder if Medvedev might have had someone in mind when he said this (according to the link at R511): "The more I play tennis, the more I feel like if you try to fake something to win the fans over, first of all, they probably going to feel it, maybe if not straightaway but sooner or later. You're going to get, like, drown in these lies because you're not going to remember where you lied the last time. If you tell the truth, it's easier."

Just saw it was Sinner vs Meddy in the semis. That's a big one. Guess I'm with Sinner - and I'll have to bow to popular opinion that Zverev is the devil and go with Grigor (but I still think Sasha is hot).

R527, Alcaraz was oversold. He's not a "perfect" or "complete" player, not yet at least. He has the ability to make in-match adjustments, but he's still not great at it. He seems to aim for inspiration and unpredictability. That's why Sinner (Mr. Consistency) is such a great antagonist for him.

I'm SO CURIOUS to know what Dimitrov is talking about when he says "only I know what I've been through" because it sounds like this struggle has been concurrent with his resurgent playing. (You sort of expect he'd need to get to the other side of the struggle BEFORE playing better.) Maybe he was addicted to something non-drug/alcohol?
Relevant portion around the 4-minute mark.
Side note: The way he and Roddick and Wozniacki talk about Serena in terms of deep friendship makes me understand there's a side of her that never really made the public narrative.

I think so, R564. She basically had two good runs at Masters/Slams and won one of those runs.
