I don’t think of Vanessa Redgrave or Miranda Richardson as overly intense. In fact, they’ve both done lovely subtle roles (Howard’s End, Enchanted April).

Sterling K. Brown. Just saw AMERICAN FICTION and he's on 100 decibels while everyone else is more relaxed inhabiting their roles. He's one of those actors who has to "win" every scene he's in.
I find Andrew Scott a bit much sometimes, but that's mostly when he does stage work (his performance in Noel Coward's PRESENT LAUGHTER was overly neurotic and completely unfunny).
Raul Esparza is another.

Yes, R5!
Just yesterday I watched him in [italic]Detective Story,[/italic] and he was absolutely fucking terrifying. Normally I don't say or think this, but I felt that performance was a little too real to be just acting.

Avery Brooks may well be too intense on a personal level and in interviews, but he was fantastic in DS9, so who the fuck cares?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 4, 2024 2:06 AM |
I couldn't watch DS9 because Avery Brooks was just much too much as Commander Sisko. He was as psycho-intensive nattering endlessly about baseball as he was talking about his wife dying. He had no "down" mode.

Jeremy Strong.
No other actors can even stand to work with him.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 4, 2024 3:15 AM |
r36, I'm watching "Napoleon" right now and I agree with you 100% about Joaquin. He gets no joy from anything, even crowning himself emperor of the French. It's just all crazy concentration and intensity. he even inspires Vanesa Kirby to be joyless as Josephine.

Samuel L. Jackson. At least he *used* to be (haven't seen the Marvel stuff) but he seems to have mellowed with age. Guy built an entire career out of screaming over a cheeseburger.
Also, David Caruso.
