The hatred in Joan's eyes
Joan wasn't a good enough actress to contain her immense hatred of Christina in this TV appearance. She didn't like being surprised on live TV by Jerry and Christina. I'm surprised she didn't walk off the set.
"Oh, you were told about her? Christina Crawford, my ddddddd......daughter."
There's no doubt that she tormented that poor girl.

JC was a drunk. For decades. I believe she is drunk in this cringe worthy recording. Being a blackout drunk was at odds with Crawford's formidable discipline.
But you are right. JC hated her adopted daughter.

Christina was a mess as a lot of abused kids grow up to be. Not as screwed up as her brother ended up, but still struggling. It doesn’t surprise me she at first tried to make it in acting. The defenses for Joan mostly come from the old timers who didn’t want their kids doing tell alls about their less than perfect upbringings for cash. They saw it as a total disrespect of privacy. Which is interesting because from what I’ve read, Joan was much worse than the typically neglectful and emotionally cold parents of the time - Henry Fonda and Bette Davis (for some examples) weren’t “excellent” parents, but they truly were common in terms of child rearing, especially for wealthy entertainer/artist types.
Myrna wasn’t a cunt, but she was Joan’s friend. Her loyalty to her friend and a more old-school view of privacy as well as a bad personal experience of Christina colored her comments.

On a sidebar, I can’t really think of any old Hollywood stars who could be considered good parents by today’s very narrow viewpoints. Audrey Hepburn? She pretty much gave up her film career to raise her kids and those brats still fight over her estate. And she was from a much later generation than the initial golden age stars.

R51 Dietrich’s daughter is someone who I see as a more suspect than Christina, considering she did not really mention the amount of money she took from Dietrich for her entire life, nor Dietrich basically supporting her and her family throughout her adulthood. Marlene was (as previously stated) a typical neglectful and cold wealthy parent of the time, but not someone out of the ordinary. Crawford very much was.

Miss Crawford was not harsh looking when movie audiences first fell in love with her. She was perhaps MGM's most glamorous star back in the 1930s. Her looks hardened as she matured, but by then her female and gay male fans were legion.

It's not clear whether Crawford was as abusive as Christina has claimed, but I think it's indisputable she was too strict with her eldest children (Christina and Christopher). She had come up from nothing and made herself a star out of sheer willpower and discipline, and she seemed to think that's how she should mother, and since she was a single parent that's how she did it. I think she eased up much more with Cathy and Cindy when she saw how badly it worked out with the older two kids. The two younger girls always have had good things to say about their mother, and have strongly disputed Christina's claims; but they were much younger and were not there when Christina and Christopher were small. And Christopher did vaguely corroborate his older sister's claims (though he never went into detail).
Several of Joan's friends disputed the claims made against her and no one in Hollywood seems to have witnessed any physical abuse of the elder children. but several old Hollywood figures said they did think Joan was oppressively strict with the elder kids: Helen Hayes, Natalie Schafer, June Allyson, Vincent Sherman.

R65 Joan wasn’t crazy enough to unleash her own brand of physical discipline on Tina and Christopher in front of others. Of course her friends would defend her. Even acquaintances who said they didn’t see much or nothing at all weren’t privy to the goings on behind her closed doors all the time. So her friends and defenders protestations mean nothing to me. The truth is most likely in the middle.

[quote]Speaking of, what WAS that contraption Christopher had to wear at night?
It was meant to prevent toddlers from falling out of bed when they transitioned from sleeping in a crib. Not at all necessary, but the kind of thing some parents worried about. Joan made Christopher wear it until he was almost a teenager. There is a level of sadism to that that makes me shudder. She had a side of her personality that was disgustingly dark and frankly, depraved.

R69, they all knew. Hollywood stars were in a mafia situation, beholden to the studios. They didn’t want to held culpable and they were pulling their own depraved shit. Joan told a newspaper about beating her kids with hairbrushes and making her son eat chocolate until he vomited to teach him a lesson. Many Hollywood stars came out about witnessing the abuse, including Joan smacking her son Christopher’s face because she didn’t like how he was holding a spoon eating. It went flying across the room. The actor friend told her that these children were going to grow up hating her if she didn’t stop. Joan told him to shut his fucking mouth. She went through staff non-stop. Many of them were horrified by what she was doing to the children.

I saw Orson Welles (who was himself an awful parent, but that's not important right now) on some show...or I read it...anyway he said the difference between Dietrich and Garbo was:
A ex-soldier who had lost his leg waited outside Sardi's to get autographs. When Orson left the restaurant with Marlene, she gladly signed the autograph and was warm and friendly to the soldier. When Welles was there another day with Garbo, he said Garbo told the soldier, "I never sign autographs".

Marlene Dietrich told Hitler and her homeland to go to hell, became a naturalized American citizen, and threw herself into the Allied war effort. She went to Germany during the war knowing that if she'd been captured they would have killed her.
Yes she was a cold and distant mother to Maria but she also did a lot of good things for people. As an above poster mentioned, Marlene supported Maria and her family for decades. Marlene had a townhouse on the UES that she gave to Maria and also let her use a Park Ave. apartment that she also owned.

I remember Larry King asking Debbie Reynolds about Crawford. She said Joan would get drunk and go home and take it out on the kids. Christina got the worst of it she said.

Be careful of dissing St Joan. I’ve seen those unhinged super-fans stalk and dox people in the FB groups. They had several Joan parody groups shut down by infiltrating and reporting them nonstop. They’re not old either; most were born after Joan died.

Joan was deeply mentally ill. Probably bipolar or with severe OCD, and an alcoholic on top of it. These kinds of people, unless on some GREAT medication, do not make loving parents.

Vincent Sherman, who directed a few of her films, was allegedly a witness to the abuse that JC inflicted upon her older children. IIRC it was on E! TRUE HOLLYWOOD STORIES that he said this. They came to blows over this and he ended their relationship personally and professionally.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | March 4, 2024 3:11 PM

Yeah, Sherman was also fucking Joanie.
June Allyson (who actually got her daughter Pam from the same baby broker) mentioned something in her book about visiting Joan and seeing something, but I forget what.
All IMDB says is: "Witnessed Joan Crawford's cruel treatment of her daughter Christina Crawford and claims the book and film adaptation Mommie Dearest (1981) are honest accounts of how Joan treated her children."

That Joan "returned" an adopted child isn't quite true. The child you mean was Philip Terry Jr. a/k/a the first Christopher, and what actually happened is the birth mother somehow tracked down the baby, tried to blackmail Crawford, and somehow managed to take the child back from Joan; then the birth mom sold the child for drug money. Later, the child's name was Gary Deatherage and he wrote a book called The Other Side of My Life.

Myrna Loy worked with Christina Crawford on the Chicago production of "Barefoot in the Park" when Christina replaced Joan Van Ark. Loy said Christina had potential, but was stubborn and unwilling to "do a single thing that anyone told her to do." Loy compared Christina's behavior as an actress unfavorably to her friend Joan's, who she said was "too professional" to indulge in such antics. Loy said, "I wanted to beat the hell out of Christina after only one rehearsal!" Christina eventually married the stage manager of the production, but was fired when Neil Simon saw her performance. Loy's dismissal of Christina's claims of childhood abuse (which Loy claimed were "rooted in envy") seems to have been very strongly colored by her disgust with Christina's incompetence as an actress and her abrasiveness as a colleague.

Joan drank all day every day from the 1940s onward. She was always soused.
Two years before she died, Joan was drunk and alone in her NY apartment when she passed out and hit her head on a table. When she woke up on the floor hours later she had two black eyes and cuts and bruises all over her face. She stopped drinking immediately, which was quite a feat after decades of chronic alcoholism.
It was too late though, as she died from pancreatic cancer.

A young David Niven was once dragooned by the studio suits into escorting an aging Crawford to some Hollywood event, and it was explained to him that whoever escorted her for the evening was expected to fuck her afterward.
He wasn't interested, but after he brought her home, she went upstairs to change and he went to use her telephone in the entryway. Moments later, he felt moisture, and looked up to find Oscar winner Joan Crawford perched over the railing, pissing on him from above.
Bruce Vilanch told the story on Gilbert Gottfried's podcast. Lucille "Le Sewer," indeed.
