The United States of America were never United
I was watching Lincoln on AMC earlier, and it dawned on me that the shit we see today in politics, has been happening for centuries in this country.
There's no way that a country built on such an evil trade, could ever be united.
Since its founding, the United States has been split down the middle, with those who were pro-slavery and anti-slavery.
Throughout the centuries, the issues may have changed, but the mindset is still the same. We're divided between those who think that whites are superior to blacks (and by extension, all people of color), and those who don't.
It has fueled the division, and been passed down through the generations. And today, the undercurrent of slavery and racism just manifests itself in issues like immigration, and Black Lives Matter, and MAGA. It's the same shit, different year.
True, some on the right have evolved, and some on the left have devolved. But both sides are still as deeply entrenched as they were during the Civil War.
I think the best thing we ever could have done for this country is to have let the South secede from the Union.
If that had happened, I truly don't think that our country would be facing the problems we have today.

Whether you think so or not R1, it's the truth.
And your ridiculous, dismissive attitude is the proof.
Racism infects EVERYTHING we see today in politics.
Of course, now we have economic classism thrown into the mix, as well.

At least not until all the wealth piled by the bondsman's two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword.

I love that California and Oregon were always Blue States.
I wonder what would have happened to the Territories, marked in Brown?
Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida belonging to a different country would have been absolutely wonderful!
Louisiana would be missed, though.

If you're in doubt, compare an old US map of free states vs slave states with our current electoral college map. Not much has changed. The slavery issue nearly scuttled our independence from Britain, and it's been rearing its ugly head regularly ever since.

I think what you mean is that you are divided between one side that thinks you should live your life in a very specific way and the other side that thinks you should be able to live how you choose.

No, that's a separate issue R8.
Social issues like abortion and gay rights have only been at the forefront in the last 50 years or so.
Before that, the divisions were strictly race and gender based.

There used to be a Little Caesars truck that would drive around selling pizza. Like the ice cream man.
